Sachin Kr. Rajput’s boosting and tuning posts connect ensemble methods with hyperparameter search and pruning. Their most useful lesson is not that one method always wins: in the reported comparisons, score differences were smaller than variation across random seeds. The figures below are Rajput’s examples, not independently reproduced benchmarks or universal rankings.

How the series fits together

The accessible companion recap describes two related tracks: combining models and searching for model settings. It presents them as practical experiments, rather than as a definitive comparison of algorithms.

  • Ensembling: stacking, blending, and voting, with attention to out-of-fold predictions, holdout size, and probability calibration.
  • Search: grid search and random search, followed by Bayesian optimization using the tree-structured Parzen estimator (TPE).
  • Pruning: stopping trials that appear unpromising before they use their full compute budget.

The author index places the title alongside posts about gradient boosting, XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, and hyperparameter tuning. The available recap does not establish the exact sequence of all ten posts or verify which six figures the title refers to, so this overview should not be read as a reconstructed post-by-post list.

Why score gaps need to be read beside seed variation

A small difference between two search methods can be hard to interpret if repeated runs of one method vary by more than that difference. Rajput’s reported comparisons illustrate this issue. Publication years are not established for the underlying examples; the results below are attributed to the author, not presented as field-wide statistics.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Comparison in Rajput’s example Reported score difference Reported random-search seed spread Budget or setup
Grid versus random search 0.0008 gap 0.0098 Three parameters
Grid versus random search 0.0039 gap 0.0098 Six parameters
TPE versus random search 0.0032 advantage for TPE 0.0128 20 trials

These numbers do not show that the methods are equivalent, nor do they determine which method will work best on another dataset. They show why one run is weak evidence for a general claim: the observed seed spread is larger than each reported gap. To make a comparison more informative, repeat runs under a consistent evaluation design and report the spread as well as the best score and search budget.

Ensembling depends on how predictions are produced

Stacking: keep the meta-model’s inputs out of the training fold

Stacking trains a second-level model on predictions from base models. Those predictions must be produced without letting a row’s target influence the model that predicts that same row; otherwise the meta-model can learn from leaked, unrealistically good inputs. Rajput reports that an in-fold stacking leak selected the wrong model.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

In the recap, clean stacking scored 0.9331 versus 0.9301 for the best single model. The leaked fit assigned weights of 1.123 to Random Forest and 0.035 to Gradient Booster. These values illustrate how leakage can distort the apparent contribution of base models; they do not establish a generally superior stacking gain.

Blending: a small holdout can make weights look better than they are

Blending estimates model weights on a held-out subset. The weight fit can be unstable when that subset is small, especially if the resulting score is judged on the same data used to choose the weights. In Rajput’s example, using 150 holdout rows per weight produced a reported score of 0.2055. With 40 rows, the claimed score was 0.1492 but the delivered score was 0.2576, compared with 0.2515 for an unweighted average.

  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

The gap between the claimed and delivered results is a warning about holdout size and evaluation independence, not evidence that a particular number of rows is sufficient in other problems. The recap also includes voting among the ensemble approaches, but it does not provide a comparable voting result in the accessible account.

What pruning saves—and what it risks

Pruning can end a trial early when its intermediate results look poor, reducing wasted computation. But early evidence is imperfect: a configuration that looks weak at the start might improve with more training. In Rajput’s Optuna example, pruning stopped 12 of 20 trials and reduced wall-clock time from 13.0 to 9.4 seconds. Log loss changed from 0.1908 to 0.1913.

The 12 stopped trials did not translate into an equivalent proportion of time saved because trials need warm-up work before a pruning decision is possible. Here the time saving was 3.6 seconds, or about 28% of the original 13.0 seconds, alongside a 0.0005 increase in log loss. Those are results of that example, not expected savings or score costs for other workloads.

The pruning decision in the example used a single validation split. A single split can give a noisy signal about whether a trial is genuinely weak; Rajput recommends cross-validation for a more robust signal in a real project. Cross-validation can make evaluation more informative, although it also adds computation.

How to use the results in your own tuning

  1. Choose an evaluation design first. Keep data separation consistent across candidate methods, and use out-of-fold predictions for stacking so a row’s target does not leak into its meta-model inputs.
  2. Repeat the comparison. Vary the random seed and report the distribution or spread of scores, rather than relying only on the best run.
  3. Match claims to the budget. State the number of trials and other relevant search settings; a result at 20 trials is not a budget-free ranking.
  4. For blending, disclose the holdout size. Keep weight fitting distinct from the data used to evaluate the finished blend.
  5. For pruning, weigh time against validation risk. Record both wall-clock time and score, and avoid treating a single split as definitive evidence for stopping a configuration.

These practices help separate a method’s apparent advantage from run-to-run noise and evaluation artifacts. The recap’s own closing challenge captures the point: “Before your next ‘X beats Y’ post, run X twice and see whether it beats itself.”
