The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) is a Windows stop-error state: when a serious system problem makes Windows shut down or restart unexpectedly, it stops rather than continuing in an unstable condition. The message may include a stop code that helps narrow down what happened, but the screen is a symptom—not a diagnosis.
What does BSOD mean?
BSOD stands for “Blue Screen of Death,” the familiar name for a Windows stop error. Microsoft also calls these events bug checks, STOP code errors, or kernel errors. In Microsoft’s words, “Blue Screen errors (also called bug checks, STOP code errors, kernel errors, or BSOD errors) can occur if a serious problem causes Windows to shut down or restart unexpectedly to protect itself from data loss.” Microsoft Support: Resolving Blue Screen errors in Windows.
Is every crash or black screen a BSOD?
No. A stop error displays a message or code and may cause Windows to restart. A frozen display or a blank screen without a stop-error message is not necessarily a BSOD and may need different troubleshooting. Microsoft’s guidance on unexpected restarts and stop code errors treats blank-screen issues separately.

The color depends on the Windows release. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 and later may show a black stop-error screen; its examples for Windows 11 version 23H2 and older show a blue screen. Look for the stop-code message, not just the background color, to tell whether you saw a stop error. Microsoft’s version-specific guidance.

What causes a blue screen?
Possible causes include hardware, a device driver, or software. The stop code—and sometimes a module name shown after “What failed”—can provide a clue, but it does not always identify a single faulty component. For example, Microsoft says the WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR indicates a hardware error on a Windows device; that example should not be generalized to every stop code. A single unexpected restart may not recur. If stop errors happen repeatedly—especially with the same code—use that code and the timing of the first occurrence as clues. A newly connected device or recently installed driver, update, or app may help identify where to start.
- Disconnect recently added hardware. If the errors began after connecting a device, remove it and see whether the problem returns.
- Use Safe Mode if Windows is difficult to start normally. This can help you continue basic troubleshooting when a normal restart is not practical.
- Check Device Manager. Look for devices marked with an issue and investigate the affected device or driver.
- Check available disk space and install Windows updates. Microsoft includes both checks in its basic troubleshooting guidance.
- Consider recovery options if the problem continues. Start with the least disruptive relevant option; what is available depends on the Windows version and situation. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps and Windows recovery options.
Back up important files before using recovery options: some may cause data loss. For more advanced investigation, Microsoft identifies Event Viewer, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and memory-dump analysis as diagnostic routes. Microsoft’s recovery guidance; Microsoft’s blue-screen guidance.
