AI and database platforms are converging: established databases are adding vector and full-text retrieval, vendors are building managed ways for AI agents to access live data, and operational systems are being connected more closely to analytical platforms. That can simplify some architectures, but it does not mean every workload belongs in one database—or that dedicated vector databases are obsolete.
What “AI database” means—and what it doesn’t
“AI database” is not one settled architecture. The label can describe a conventional database with AI-oriented search features, a platform that exposes governed data to agents, or a broader system that brings operational and analytical data together for AI applications. These capabilities address different needs; the label alone does not tell you which architecture fits.

Vector search is one part of the picture, not a complete definition. The IDC MarketScape assessment points buyers to a broader set of considerations, including in-database machine learning, vector search, graph analytics, generative-AI integration, open formats, governance, deployment flexibility, and hybrid transactional and analytical processing (HTAP).

Three ways databases and AI platforms are converging
Search capabilities are moving into general-purpose databases
Database providers are adding vector retrieval alongside full-text search, and in some cases supporting hybrid search that combines them. Keeping retrieval near operational data may reduce the need for separate infrastructure when the database’s capabilities suit the workload. It does not establish that an integrated feature will meet every application’s requirements for retrieval quality, scale, or performance.

Agents are getting managed paths to live data
Managed interfaces such as remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers are intended to let AI agents reach current, governed data without teams creating a bespoke connection for every use case. The practical value depends on the exact service: check its availability, security model, permissions, and supported actions before designing around it.
Operational and analytical data are being brought closer
Some approaches connect transactional systems to analytical stores through federation, reverse ETL, or change-data capture. Others center more workloads on a single database platform. These are different architectural choices: compare how quickly changes become available to AI applications, what consistency they provide, where data moves, and where access policies and governance are enforced.

What recent vendor announcements show
The examples below illustrate different directions, not a complete market ranking. They are vendor announcements rather than a standardized, independent head-to-head evaluation. Availability labels apply to the cited announcements; confirm the current status for the specific product, edition, and region before relying on a feature.
| Vendor | Announced direction | Availability and qualification in the cited source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud | Its April 2026 announcement describes vector and full-text search across database services, managed remote MCP servers, and links between operational and analytical data. | The announcement marks some features as preview and MCP servers as generally available. Performance and adoption figures in the post are vendor-reported. Google’s announcement |
| MongoDB | Its May 2026 release presents a platform combining operational data, search, embeddings, memory, and reranking. A separate 2025 announcement covers search and vector search for self-managed editions. | The May release labels Voyage AI embedding automation public preview and MongoDB 8.3 generally available. The 2025 self-managed search announcement describes public preview. May 2026 release; 2025 announcement |
| Oracle | Its March 24, 2026 announcement describes an Autonomous AI Vector Database, database-resident agents, an MCP server, and vector data in Iceberg. | Oracle said the Autonomous AI Vector Database was in limited availability in that announcement. Oracle’s announcement |
| EDB | Its 2026 announcement describes a Postgres-based platform for relational, JSON, time-series, geospatial, vector, agentic, and analytical workloads. | EDB’s release includes vendor and benchmark claims; comparative performance figures should not be treated as independent findings without reviewing the benchmark methodology. How to compare the architectural choices
Start with the workload, not the “AI database” label. A vector feature inside an existing database, a dedicated vector system, and a broader data platform can all be reasonable candidates, but they solve different combinations of problems. IDC’s assessment emphasizes capabilities, interoperability, governance, deployment flexibility, and HTAP fit; IT Pro’s overview of vector databases also quotes Forrester analyst Noel Yuhanna on the importance of enterprise security, governance, compliance, and reliable scaling.

- Workload fit: Is vector search central to the application, or one function among transactional and analytical work? List the query patterns you need: semantic, keyword, hybrid, graph or contextual retrieval, filtering, and update frequency.
- Retrieval and runtime behavior: Evaluate recall and accuracy, tail latency, throughput, scale, and visibility of fresh writes using representative data and expected concurrency. A feature list or vendor benchmark alone cannot establish how the system will behave for your workload.
- Security and governance: Verify access boundaries, permissions, audit and governance controls, compliance requirements, and data-residency options. For agent access in particular, confirm which actions are supported and whose permissions an agent uses.
- Deployment and interoperability: Check whether the required managed-cloud, self-managed, hybrid, or on-premises deployment is available. Map integration with current databases, lakehouses, catalogs, orchestration and agent frameworks, and open formats such as Iceberg.
- Freshness and data movement: Set an acceptable delay between a source-system change and its availability to retrieval or analytics. Account for duplicated data, synchronization work, consistency expectations, and the location of governance enforcement.
- Operations and cost: Compare reliability, monitoring and maintenance effort, scaling behavior, and total cost across the whole architecture—not just the database feature or service price.
What the available survey figure does—and doesn’t—say
A MongoDB release dated September 17, 2025, attributes to IDC Research Director Devin Pratt the finding that more than 74% of organizations plan to use integrated vector databases to store and query embeddings in agentic AI workflows. The release says the figure comes from the IDC IT Quick Poll – Agentic AI and Data Q2 Survey 2025 (N=102). It describes stated plans among survey respondents, not measured deployments or all organizations. Read the release and its attribution.
The cited material does not establish a neutral, market-wide market-size or revenue figure for this convergence. Nor does it provide independent product testing: vendor performance and customer figures should be read as vendor claims unless their methods and results are independently validated.
