A 2013 study found that wild European perch exposed to oxazepam behaved more actively, spent less time in social groups, and fed faster. That result shows a behavioral change under the study’s conditions—not that all drugs make fish antisocial, or that every waterway will produce the same effect.
What did the 2013 perch study find?
Researchers Tomas Brodin, Jerker Fick, M. Jonsson, and J. Klaminder reported their findings in Science on February 15, 2013. They studied oxazepam, a benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety, and wild European perch (Perca fluviatilis). The paper reported that exposure altered the fish’s behavior and feeding rate.
At an experimental concentration of 1.8 µg/L, the perch showed increased activity, reduced sociality, and a higher feeding rate. “Less social” describes the measured behavior in this experiment; it is not a human-like diagnosis or evidence that the fish experienced loneliness. The paper’s abstract and bibliographic record summarizes the study.

The original study also reported oxazepam measurements in wastewater and a receiving river. These are field measurements, not the experimental dose, and they should not be treated as a current global survey of contamination.

The researchers also reported that oxazepam concentration in perch muscle from the River Fyris was more than six times the concentration in the water. That finding indicates bioaccumulation in the study, but it does not by itself establish the same ratio in other fish or waterways. Does oxazepam make fish less social in natural settings?
A 2021 whole-lake study complicates any broad prediction. In a natural lake setting, researchers exposed perch to oxazepam concentrations of 11–24 µg/L. Fish familiarized with lake conditions did not show the predicted anti-anxiety response, and the authors judged drug effects negligible compared with other environmental conditions. The 2021 study examined a different exposure and design from the 2013 experiment, so it qualifies how far the earlier result can be generalized; it does not directly disprove it.

What should readers conclude about drugs in wastewater?
The studies show why controlled experiments and natural settings answer different questions. A controlled exposure can identify behavioral changes under defined conditions. A whole-lake study tests whether those changes remain evident amid the conditions fish encounter in an ecosystem. Taken together, the findings support concern about pharmaceutical residues and ecological effects, but not a universal claim about oxazepam, all fish, or all waterways.
