No, the world is not scheduled to end on November 13, 2026. The date came from a 1960 population-growth model by Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot. If the model’s accelerating trend continued unchanged, its population function would reach a mathematical singularity: a finite date at which the formula tends toward infinity.
That is a limit of an extrapolation, not a forecast of an asteroid, war or sudden planetary catastrophe. The model was useful as a warning about unchecked growth, but it failed as a literal prediction because the trend and its underlying conditions did not continue indefinitely.
What did the 1960 paper actually predict?
The paper was titled “Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026” and appeared in Science. Its authors—Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot—fitted a mathematical curve to historical population estimates. The curve represented accelerating, rather than merely constant, growth.
When that curve is extended forward, it reaches a finite time at which the calculated population becomes unbounded. The authors called that date “doomsday” because the number represented by the equation, N, tends toward infinity. The paper was not asserting that billions of people would physically appear at once or that Earth would be destroyed by a discrete event.

TIME’s contemporaneous account made the distinction explicit. It reported that “von Foerster does not really believe that the human race will breed itself to universe-filling infinity in 66 years.” The dramatic title described the endpoint of the formula, not the authors’ belief in a literal apocalypse.
The same article reproduced the paper’s darkly humorous wording: “For obvious reasons,” he says, “t0 shall be called ‘doomsday,’ since it is on that date that N (the number of ‘elements,’ or people) goes to infinity, and the clever population annihilates itself. Our great-great-grandchildren will not starve. They will be squeezed to death.” In context, “squeezed” describes the pressure implied by uncontrolled growth, not a specified physical mechanism or a scheduled mass-death event.
How the singularity date came from the model
Accelerating growth was the key assumption
A constant-growth model adds roughly the same number of people in each interval. The 1960 paper instead represented a pattern in which the increase itself was accelerating. A hyperbolic curve is a common way to express that behavior: as time approaches a particular value, the curve rises ever more steeply and its mathematical value diverges.
In generic form, such a curve has a denominator that approaches zero at a finite time. The denominator is a feature of the equation, not a clock counting down to an external event. If the observed acceleration changes—as fertility, mortality, migration, technology, policy or resource limits change—the singularity moves or disappears.

The date was conditional, not a timetable
The calculation asked a “what if” question: what date would the fitted curve reach its singularity if the historical pattern continued without alteration? A close fit to earlier observations can show that a model describes those observations; it cannot establish that the same growth mechanism will govern decades of future demographic change.
A 2026 secondary transcription gives the fitted date as A.D. 2026.87 ± 5.50 years. The calendar formulation used in the paper’s title is Friday, November 13, 2026. The ±5.50-year figure belongs to that fitted singularity estimate; it is not a confidence interval saying that an actual catastrophe could occur anywhere in that range.
What the 7% statistic does—and does not—mean
The same transcription reports a root-mean-square deviation of approximately 7% for the curve against the historical population estimates. That is a measure of how far the fitted curve sat from the data points used for the historical fit. It is not a 7% probability that doomsday will happen, a 7% forecast error, or a 93% level of certainty that the future will follow the curve.

Why did a mathematical limit become a “world-end” prediction?
The word “doomsday” invited a literal reading
“Doomsday” is emotionally stronger than “finite-time singularity.” Newspapers and later online headlines often removed the condition attached to the equation and retained only the date. Readers then encountered a story that sounded like a countdown, even though the model supplied no physical trigger, impact scenario or chain of events ending on that day.
The paper’s language was intentionally memorable. A University of Illinois Alumni Association profile describes von Foerster as a showman; Stuart Umpleby, who studied under him, recalled, “Von Foerster was a performer.” The profile also describes the formula as tongue-in-cheek. That retrospective helps explain the presentation style, but it does not replace the paper’s mathematical qualification or prove that every detail of the authors’ intentions is known.
What the model was warning about
The warning was about the consequences of treating accelerating population growth as an indefinitely sustainable trend. A curve that rises faster and faster eventually implies impossible values: more people than available resources, space and physical capacity could support. Calling that endpoint “doomsday” dramatized the contradiction. It did not identify famine on a particular day, nor did it claim that the population would literally become infinite.

Extrapolation cannot preserve a changing social system
Population growth is produced by births, deaths, age structure, migration and social conditions. Those drivers respond to education, urbanization, income, public health, contraception, policy, conflict and cultural change. A curve fitted to earlier centuries has no automatic way to incorporate those transitions unless the model explicitly represents them.

The 1960 extrapolation treated the earlier acceleration as if it would persist. Once the real growth rate slowed, the mathematical path no longer described the world. The failure therefore lies in extending a historical pattern beyond the conditions that generated it, not in arithmetic performed on the original data.
A singularity is not a physical infinity
In mathematics, “goes to infinity” means that values grow without bound as the independent variable approaches a limit. Real populations consist of finite people living under material constraints. Long before any equation produced an infinite number, its assumptions would have become untenable. The singularity marks where the formula stops being a credible representation, not where nature is required to create an infinite population.
The date itself was not a precision claim
The title’s exact Friday-the-13th date can make the result look more precise than it was. A date selected from a fitted curve is sensitive to the chosen data, functional form and extrapolation interval. The reported ±5.50 years illustrates that sensitivity; it should not be read as a narrow appointment with catastrophe.
What demographic evidence says now
Later observations did not follow the unlimited hyperbolic trajectory. A 2025 analysis by Victor M. Yakovenko examined population and carbon-dioxide trends spanning 10,000 BCE through 2023 CE. Its abstract reports that the population curve deviates from the earlier singularity pattern in the 21st century and gives a model-based population peak around 2030, with a 32-year time width.

That result belongs to Yakovenko’s specific re-analysis, published as The End of Hyperbolic Growth in Human Population and CO₂ Emissions; it is not a guarantee that the global population will peak on an exact day or a statement of scientific consensus. The paper is available at arXiv. Its peak estimate illustrates the central lesson of the 1960 episode: once the growth regime changes, a singularity derived from the old regime is no longer a reliable calendar forecast.

A short timeline of the prediction and its afterlife
- 1960: von Foerster, Mora and Amiot publish “Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026” in Science, using an accelerating population curve.
- November 14, 1960: TIME reports on the paper, including the authors’ explanation that they did not literally expect universe-filling infinity.
- August 6, 2020: The University of Illinois Alumni Association publishes retrospective biographical context about von Foerster’s presentation style and the formula’s tongue-in-cheek character.
- August 14, 2025: Yakovenko submits a new analysis that finds departure from the earlier hyperbolic path and models a peak around 2030.
- November 13, 2026: The date named in the original title arrives as the endpoint of the old extrapolation—not as a scientifically scheduled end of Earth.
What the prediction teaches about mathematical forecasts
Good historical fit is not the same as predictive power
A model can track past observations impressively and still fail when the system changes. The 1960 curve’s approximately 7% historical deviation describes its fit to the points used, while the failed extrapolation demonstrates that fit quality alone does not validate a future mechanism.
Every forecast has a domain of validity
The useful question is not whether a formula is “right” in the abstract, but where its assumptions hold. An accelerating curve may summarize one period of demographic history. It becomes misleading when treated as a law that overrides changing human behavior and material limits.

Calling a singularity a conditional mathematical endpoint preserves the important warning without manufacturing an apocalypse. When reading similar claims, identify the variable being modeled, the assumptions held constant, the period used for fitting and whether the quoted uncertainty concerns the data fit or the real-world forecast.
So, will the world end on November 13, 2026?
Nothing in the 1960 paper establishes that conclusion. November 13, 2026 is the date assigned to a singularity in an extrapolated population equation. The historical trend changed, the model’s assumptions no longer describe demographic reality, and later analyses model a different trajectory. The date is therefore best understood as a memorable caution about unchecked exponential or hyperbolic growth—not as a countdown to the end of the world.
