Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD (Supervised), can attempt a variety of driving and parking maneuvers, including following a route, changing lanes, turning, negotiating some intersections, and parking. It is still a driver-assistance feature, not autonomous driving: the driver must watch the road and be ready to take control immediately. Which functions are available—and how the system behaves—depends on the particular vehicle, software, configuration, and region.
What FSD (Supervised) is—and what the name does not mean
FSD (Supervised) is Tesla’s name for a suite of advanced driver-assistance features. The system can attempt parts of a driving task, but the word “Supervised” is essential: the human remains the driver, responsible for monitoring the road and responding when the system needs help. Tesla says its enabled features do not make a vehicle fully autonomous or replace its driver, and the Model 3 manual says the driver must be ready to act immediately. Tesla’s feature page and Model 3 manual make that distinction directly.
In practical terms, treat the system as assistance with vehicle control, not as permission to stop driving. Do not plan to read, sleep, use a phone, or assume the car will identify and resolve every hazard. Keep observing what is happening around the vehicle and remain prepared to steer, brake, or otherwise take over. NHTSA states that every vehicle currently for sale in the United States requires the driver’s full attention for safe operation. Tesla describes a range of functions, but those descriptions are not promises that a maneuver will be available on every car or succeed in every situation. The applicable owner’s manual and the controls shown in the vehicle are more useful for determining what a specific car offers than another driver’s account or a demonstration from a different software release.

Route following and road maneuvers
According to Tesla, the system can attempt to follow a route, make lane changes, select route forks, navigate around vehicles and objects, and make left and right turns. The Model 3 manual also describes attempting to stop at and negotiate intersections, stop signs, and roundabouts, as well as enter or exit highways. Tesla says the feature can be used on various road types, including residential and city streets. These are manufacturer descriptions of intended capabilities, not a guarantee of coverage for every road, maneuver, or circumstance. Route-following is not the same as independently judging every situation correctly. A planned turn or route fork may still require the driver to intervene if the road layout, traffic, or conditions make the maneuver unsuitable. The manual specifically calls out narrow roads with oncoming cars, construction zones, and complex intersections as situations where intervention may be needed. Those are examples, not a complete list of conditions in which the driver could have to take control.
Parking and app-based maneuvers
Tesla describes Autopark as assistance for parallel or perpendicular parking and also lists Summon features controlled through the Tesla app. The support page does not establish that every vehicle has the same parking or Summon functions, or that they are available in every location. What it cannot do
FSD (Supervised) cannot make the vehicle autonomous or transfer the driver’s responsibility to the software. It cannot guarantee that a route will be followed without error, that every obstacle or hazard will be handled correctly, or that a particular maneuver can be completed without human intervention. The cited Tesla material describes capabilities and warns of limitations; it does not promise flawless performance in all driving conditions.
It also cannot be treated as a substitute for attention simply because it is currently following a route or has completed previous maneuvers successfully. The driver has to assess the situation continuously and be able to take over at once. This distinction matters especially when conditions change: an apparently routine route can include a difficult intersection, a narrow road with opposing traffic, or a work zone. The available information does not support treating a successful drive, a particular feature demonstration, or a claim about collision rates as proof that the system will handle a future trip safely without supervision. A driver should not begin a maneuver they are unable or unwilling to supervise and take over.

When you may need to intervene
Tesla’s Model 3 manual highlights three examples: narrow roads with oncoming cars, construction zones, and complex intersections. They are useful prompts to increase caution, but they should not be read as an exhaustive checklist. A practical supervision routine
- Before using the feature, check the manual for the exact vehicle and review the controls and prompts displayed in that car. Do not infer that a feature is present because another Tesla has it.
- While it is engaged, keep your attention on the road and the surrounding traffic. Supervision is an active driving responsibility, not occasional checking.
- As a maneuver approaches, assess whether the road and traffic make it safe to continue. Be particularly alert in the manual’s examples—narrow roads with oncoming traffic, construction zones, and complex intersections.
- If the system’s behavior is unsuitable or the situation changes, take control promptly. Do not wait for the system to resolve a hazard that you can see developing.
This routine is a practical way to apply Tesla’s stated driver-responsibility warnings; it does not add a guarantee about the system’s performance or define a substitute for the vehicle’s instructions.
Why the same Tesla may not have the same capabilities as another
There is no safe basis for assuming that a function seen in one Tesla is available in every Tesla. Tesla says availability can depend on vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, and model year. The Model 3 manual adds that the feature described may not be installed or may not operate exactly as described depending on market region, manufacture date, configuration, options, hardware, and software. These differences affect both whether a function is offered and what the owner should expect from it. A video, feature list, or description for a different model or software version may not apply to your vehicle. Availability can also vary by region, so a feature described by Tesla should not be assumed to be enabled in every market.
How to check your own vehicle
- Use the owner’s manual that applies to your specific vehicle rather than relying only on a manual for another model. Tesla’s online manual identifies Model 3 content; owners of other models should consult their corresponding vehicle documentation.
- Check the vehicle’s displayed controls and prompts for the functions currently offered. The manual and on-screen information are more directly relevant to your car than general descriptions.
- Confirm market and configuration limits before planning around a function. A listed capability does not establish that it is installed, enabled, or operating identically on every vehicle.
- Recheck when the vehicle’s software or configuration changes. Tesla’s stated caveats include software version and hardware, so older descriptions may not reflect the car’s current feature set.
How to interpret Tesla’s safety statistics
Tesla’s support page says that, according to its Vehicle Safety Report, vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged experience “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” than vehicles driven without it. Those are Tesla-published figures; the support-page summary does not provide enough information about the comparison design, mileage or exposure definitions, or adjustment methods to establish whether the groups are comparable. Read those numbers as claims attributed to Tesla, not as independently established findings or proof that enabling the feature causes a reduction in collisions. Without the underlying definitions and methods, the figures do not tell an individual driver how safe a particular trip will be, nor do they remove the need to supervise the vehicle.

Regulatory context: assistance is not automated driving
NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety page distinguishes vehicles currently for sale from automated driving systems being tested or piloted, and says vehicles for sale in the United States require full driver attention for safe operation. This supports a careful distinction between driver-assistance marketing and a vehicle that can drive itself without an attentive human.
