Managed security service providers (MSSPs) need a connected telemetry set, not a single alert feed, to hunt ransomware. Collect endpoint, identity, remote-access, network, DNS, and cloud-control-plane data; attach every event to the right client, asset, user, process, and time zone; and protect the records from deletion or tampering. That combination lets hunters reconstruct an intrusion from initial access through privilege escalation, lateral movement, defense evasion, backup or log tampering, data theft, and encryption.

Why ransomware hunting requires multiple telemetry sources

Ransomware operations cross control boundaries. An attacker may enter through a stolen VPN credential, run PowerShell on one workstation, create an account, move through remote administration, disable defenses, alter backups, and exfiltrate data from a cloud storage service before encrypting file servers. No single product normally records that entire sequence.

Correlation is therefore the MSSP’s central requirement. A failed login from an unusual country, a successful VPN connection minutes later, a new privileged account, a remote service creation, and a large outbound transfer may be weak signals individually but compelling evidence together. CISA’s September 2023 #StopRansomware Guide, authored with MS-ISAC, NSA, and FBI, advises retaining and securing logs from network devices, local hosts, and cloud services and using centralized log management or a SIEM to correlate them.

Telemetry is useful only when collection is consistent, retained long enough, protected against attacker changes, and mapped to client context. An MSSP should be able to answer who generated an event, on which asset, through which identity, from what source address, at what time, and whether the record is complete.

The minimum telemetry baseline

1. Endpoint and host activity

Endpoint data supplies the process, file, service, and host-network detail needed to explain what happened on a machine. Collect, at minimum:

  • Process creation, parent-child lineage, command lines, hashes, signer information, and user or logon session.
  • Executable, script, and interpreter activity, including PowerShell and other administrative shells.
  • File creation, modification, deletion, renaming, and mass-change patterns.
  • Windows Security events and PowerShell logs where applicable. CISA’s LockBit advisory notes that PowerShell history can reveal operating-system and registry interaction and threat-actor use.
  • Service installation and modification, scheduled-task creation or changes, and other persistence mechanisms.
  • Security-product detections, quarantine actions, configuration changes, and attempts to disable or bypass protection.
  • Host network connections with destination, port, protocol, process, and timestamp.
  • Changes to backups, shadow copies, disk journaling, boot configuration, and recovery settings.
  • Indicators of precursor malware or tools associated with reconnaissance, credential theft, remote execution, and lateral movement.

Endpoint detection and response (EDR) can provide process and connection context. Sysmon is cited by CISA as an option for monitoring indicators and malicious file creation. These are categories of capability, not endorsements of a particular vendor. Ensure that the collection policy covers servers, workstations, domain controllers, and high-value infrastructure rather than only user laptops.

2. Identity, directory, and remote-access telemetry

Identity events show which account enabled each action. Ingest:

  • Authentication successes and failures, including interactive, network, service, and federated sign-ins.
  • Account and group creation, deletion, disabling, re-enabling, and attribute changes.
  • Privilege assignment, role changes, and membership in administrative groups.
  • Use of privileged accounts, service accounts, break-glass accounts, and delegated identities.
  • Active Directory and other directory-audit events relevant to replication, policy, and object changes.
  • VPN, zero-trust, bastion, virtual-desktop, and other remote-access logins, including source address, device, method, and session duration.
  • Remote monitoring and management (RMM) activity, especially new agents, unusual commands, and access outside an approved maintenance window.

High-value hunts include newly created directory accounts, sudden privilege escalation, unusual Domain Admin behavior, impossible-travel or atypical VPN access, and RMM use by an identity or host that has not used it before. Build a client-specific baseline: authorized administrators, maintenance windows, service-account behavior, and the MSSP’s own tooling should be identifiable so routine administration is not mistaken for intrusion.

3. Network, firewall, and flow telemetry

Retain firewall, IDS, VPN, router, switch, proxy, and other network-device events together with flow or session records. A useful flow record includes source and destination addresses, source and destination ports, protocol, start and end times, byte and packet counts, action, and interface or segment.

Use this data to hunt for:

  • Unexpected lateral connections between workstation, server, and administrative segments.
  • Remote-execution paths or protocols that are rare for a host or identity.
  • Command-and-control traffic, tunneling, and encrypted sessions whose destinations or timing are abnormal.
  • Sudden increases in outbound volume, especially from file servers, identity systems, or cloud workloads.
  • Connections to newly observed infrastructure or destinations outside the client’s normal geography and business relationships.

CISA examples include tunneling over HTTPS and common exfiltration tools. Flow metadata remains valuable when payload capture is unavailable. Where the environment and an investigation justify it, packet or session content can add protocol and payload detail, but full capture increases storage, privacy, handling, and collection costs; it is not a universal requirement.

4. DNS telemetry

Preserve DNS queries and responses from resolvers, endpoints, and cloud environments where available. Record the querying host, requesting process or sensor (when supported), queried name, response, record type, resolver, timestamp, and returned addresses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS helps identify command-and-control domains, rapidly changing infrastructure, tunneling, unusual lookups from servers that rarely browse, and the first appearance of a suspicious domain before an endpoint alert fires. Associate a query with the initiating host and process whenever the product supports that relationship; a domain alone is much less informative than a domain queried by a newly spawned script on a privileged server.

5. Cloud and SaaS control-plane telemetry

Virtual-machine endpoint logs are insufficient for cloud investigations. Enable and preserve provider audit and control-plane events for:

  • Sign-ins, token use, identity and role changes, and creation or modification of access keys.
  • IAM policy, security-group, firewall, logging, and other security-control changes.
  • Network configuration, route, peering, load-balancer, and public-exposure changes.
  • Resource discovery, enumeration, and listing activity.
  • Creation, deletion, copying, and restoration of snapshots and backups.
  • Object-storage policy, sharing, download, deletion, and versioning changes.
  • Data movement within and between accounts, projects, subscriptions, regions, and external tenants.
  • Actions performed by automation roles, applications, and service principals, not only human users.

Alert on unusual identities, source IP addresses, regions, user agents, and discovery rates. Correlate listing or enumeration with subsequent instance or snapshot changes, policy updates, public sharing, and high-volume or cross-account transfers. MITRE ATT&CK detection strategies describe cloud-audit patterns for infrastructure discovery, service discovery, and data transfer to a cloud account. ATT&CK’s older data-source pages were deprecated in version 18, released in October 2025, but remain available as references; newer detection strategies are more behavior- and analytics-oriented.

How to correlate telemetry into a ransomware hunt

Collection becomes actionable when events share normalized fields. At ingestion, standardize timestamps to UTC while retaining the original offset, normalize usernames and hostnames, resolve asset ownership, and preserve raw fields for later review. Link identities to directory groups and privilege, hosts to client and business role, processes to executable hashes and parent processes, and network records to the process or session that opened the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start with an anchor. Use an alert, a ransom note, a suspicious account, a mass file-change event, an unusual VPN login, or a cloud-policy change.
  2. Build the time window. Search backward for initial access, reconnaissance, credential use, and persistence; then forward for lateral movement, defense evasion, backup tampering, exfiltration, and encryption.
  3. Pivot across domains. Move from process to host connection, from connection to DNS, from source host to identity, and from identity to directory or cloud actions.
  4. Compare with the client’s baseline. Distinguish a normal backup job or approved administrator from a new account, unusual region, rare parent-child process, or out-of-hours transfer.
  5. Preserve evidence. Export the relevant raw events, process trees, flow records, and cloud audit entries before retention windows or attacker actions remove them.
  6. Record gaps explicitly. Note disabled sources, clock drift, missing fields, unmonitored assets, and periods when an agent or logging configuration was changed.

Hunt leads that deserve priority

Hunt lead Telemetry to join Why it matters
New or altered privileged account Directory audit, authentication, group membership, VPN and endpoint activity May indicate persistence or preparation for broad access.
Unexpected service or scheduled task Endpoint process and service events, identity, host network connections Can provide persistence or remote execution.
Backup, shadow-copy, or logging changes Endpoint, backup platform, cloud snapshots, configuration audit Defense evasion often precedes encryption.
Unusual VPN or remote-admin session Remote-access logs, identity, source IP, device posture, RMM and process data May reveal stolen credentials or misuse of trusted tools.
Enumeration followed by data movement Cloud discovery, IAM changes, storage access, flow and DNS records Links reconnaissance to collection or exfiltration.
Mass file modification Endpoint file events, process lineage, user identity, network destinations Can distinguish encryption from a legitimate batch job.

Retention, integrity, and evidence handling

CISA recommends retaining and adequately securing network, local-host, and cloud-service logs, and says critical-system logs should be maintained and backed up for a minimum of one year if possible. That is guidance, not a universal legal mandate. Apply the client’s regulatory obligations, contracts, privacy commitments, and platform limits separately; document any shorter period and the resulting investigative risk.

Centralize copies outside the systems being monitored. Restrict deletion and configuration changes, separate logging administration from ordinary domain administration, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and alert when collection stops or a retention policy changes. Regularly test that events are arriving, timestamps are sane, fields are populated, and historical searches return expected records. CISA specifically advises checking whether logs have been deleted or logging disabled.

During an incident, preserve volatile evidence promptly. Memory, active network connections, firewall buffers, and short-lived cloud or identity tokens may disappear on reboot, rotation, or automatic expiration. Follow the client’s legal and forensic procedures while keeping an immutable copy of exported evidence and its chain of custody.

Operating the telemetry service across many clients

An MSSP should maintain a source inventory for every tenant. For each source, record the client, asset or account scope, collector, event types, timezone, owner, retention policy, privacy classification, last-seen time, and known blind spots. A health dashboard should show delayed, silent, or partially functioning sources rather than treating them as healthy.

Define an investigation and response agreement with each client: who can isolate a host, disable an account, block a domain, or suspend a cloud key; what confidence threshold is required; how evidence is shared; and how quickly the client must be contacted. CISA warns that MSP access and tooling can become a risk path themselves. Enforce least privilege, separate duties, protect provider credentials, and monitor the MSSP’s own RMM activity just as carefully as client administration.

Choosing tools without a vendor checklist

Compare capabilities rather than brand names. The following axes expose the trade-offs:

Decision axis Questions to ask
Coverage Does the service collect endpoint, identity, remote-access, network, DNS, and cloud control-plane events across each client’s environments?
Context Can an event be tied to host, process, user, session, asset role, source address, and cloud account?
Retention and integrity Are raw events exportable, searchable for the required period, protected from alteration, and covered by tamper or silence alerts?
Correlation and hunting Can analysts pivot across tenants safely, write queries, join timelines, and preserve an investigation without losing raw evidence?
Operational fit Can collectors run consistently on mixed operating systems, remote sites, cloud accounts, and regulated workloads?
Data volume and privacy What storage, bandwidth, payload-capture, redaction, residency, and access-control costs follow from the chosen detail level?

CISA supports EDR, IDS, and SIEM as capability categories but does not endorse a specific vendor. A smaller, reliable set of well-contextualized events is more useful than an enormous feed that cannot be retained, searched, or protected.

Common collection failures and fixes

Only endpoint alerts are collected

Failure: The MSSP sees a malicious process but cannot determine how the attacker entered or where data moved. Fix: Add identity, VPN, DNS, flow, firewall, and cloud audit sources and normalize shared fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud logging stops at virtual machines

Failure: An attacker changes IAM, snapshots, storage policy, or cross-account sharing without touching the guest OS. Fix: Enable provider control-plane, storage, identity, and configuration events and protect their destination from the affected account.

Logs exist but are not trustworthy

Failure: Attackers disable agents, delete local records, or alter retention settings. Fix: Centralize copies, restrict administration, alert on silence and configuration changes, and verify source health continuously.

RMM activity is treated as automatically benign

Failure: A trusted management channel becomes the path for lateral movement. Fix: Baseline approved tools, identities, hosts, and maintenance windows; investigate new commands, destinations, or privilege use.

Retention is assumed to be universal

Failure: A one-year target is applied without considering law, contract, privacy, or platform limits. Fix: Document a client-specific policy, backup critical logs where possible, and state the investigative consequence of every gap.

What a complete ransomware timeline should show

At the end of a hunt, an analyst should be able to place the initial access signal, first execution, credential and privilege changes, discovery, lateral movement, defense evasion, backup or logging tampering, collection and exfiltration, and encryption or impact on one evidence-backed timeline. If a stage cannot be established, identify the missing source or field rather than inferring it from a single alert. That discipline turns telemetry from a collection of notifications into a defensible incident record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an MSSP retain ransomware-hunting logs?

CISA, MS-ISAC, NSA, and FBI recommend maintaining and backing up critical-system logs for a minimum of one year, if possible. Treat that as guidance, then apply each client’s legal, contractual, privacy, and platform constraints.

Is full packet capture required for ransomware hunting?

No. Flow and session metadata plus DNS, endpoint, and identity context can support effective hunts. Packet or session content is an optional supplement when the environment and investigation justify its storage, privacy, and handling cost.

What is the most important cloud telemetry?

Collect control-plane and storage activity as well as virtual-machine logs: sign-ins, IAM and security-policy changes, discovery, snapshots, sharing, and data movement. Correlate enumeration with later configuration or transfer events.
