SUV reliability and safety ratings answer different questions. Reliability ratings generally summarize defects, malfunctions and design problems that owners reported during a defined period. Safety ratings summarize results from standardized crash, rollover and crash-avoidance assessments. Neither is a universal score for vehicle quality, and a star rating, a 100-point score and a problems-per-vehicle figure cannot be placed on one shared scale.
Reliability and safety are separate measurements
When someone asks whether an SUV is “reliable and safe,” they are combining two evidence types. Reliability asks how often owners encountered problems and which vehicle systems were involved. Safety asks how the vehicle performed in specified tests designed to estimate occupant protection, rollover risk or the ability of technology to help avoid a collision.
A dependable SUV can still receive a mediocre crash score, and an SUV with excellent crash-test results can have frequent infotainment, electrical or mechanical complaints. Read the organization, study name, model year, ownership window and tested configuration before interpreting any number.

What reliability ratings measure
Owner experience rather than a laboratory durability test
In the methodology described by J.D. Power, quality and reliability measures defects, malfunctions and design flaws reported by verified vehicle owners. Feedback can cover the entire vehicle, from the engine and transmission to electronics and infotainment. This makes the result an owner-experience indicator: it reflects how frequently problems were reported and the systems involved, not a controlled prediction of how long an individual SUV will run.

Owner surveys can reveal issues that a short laboratory test misses, such as recurring warning lights, software bugs, uncomfortable seats or a dealer visit that did not resolve a problem. They also depend on who responded, how problems were described and whether a particular issue affected many vehicles in the sample. A high score therefore means favorable reported experience in that study, not a guarantee that your SUV will be trouble-free.
The ownership window changes the meaning
J.D. Power describes collecting feedback about the first three months and subsequently the first three years of ownership. A rating tied to an initial-quality study captures early defects and delivery problems; a dependability study covering three years captures a longer period of use. Neither should be read as a lifetime reliability forecast.
Before comparing two SUVs, identify the exact study and period behind each displayed number:

- Study name: initial quality and long-term dependability answer different questions.
- Ownership period: confirm whether the result covers the first months, the first three years or another interval.
- Model year: a rating may describe a previous year if the current model was not surveyed or changed substantially.
- Sample and category: J.D. Power groups vehicles by categories such as price range and size, so compare vehicles within the same published category.

Overall scores may include more than reliability
An overall J.D. Power rating can combine driving experience, resale value and dealership experience with the quality-and-reliability component. Calling that overall number a “pure reliability score” is inaccurate. If your decision is about expected problems, isolate the quality-and-reliability measure and read the accompanying study definition.

Why new and redesigned SUVs need extra caution
J.D. Power notes that newer and recently redesigned vehicles can score better on its driving-experience measure, while also cautioning that all-new or substantially redesigned models may be unproven. Some first-year ratings may be unavailable or may rely on information from a prior model year. A favorable result for an established generation is not automatically evidence about a replacement generation with a new engine, electronics architecture or driver-assistance system.
What NHTSA safety ratings measure
NCAP test areas
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) evaluates three broad areas:

- Crash avoidance: assessments examine whether available safety technology can help prevent a crash; these results also support safety-technology recommendations.
NCAP publishes procedures, reports and data through its resources related to the New Car Assessment Program and its datasets and APIs. Crashworthiness results describe occupant protection in the tested crashes. Crash-avoidance results address the performance of technology intended to prevent a collision or reduce its likelihood; they are not a substitute for attentive driving.
How the overall star score is constructed
NHTSA’s Overall Vehicle Score combines estimated injury probabilities from frontal and side ratings with a projected injury probability associated with rollover resistance. The agency weights those components to reflect the share of real-world injuries associated with each crash type, then compares the result with average fleet injury risk. The stars are therefore a relative summary of modeled risk from specified tests.
The star description is not a promise that occupants will avoid injury in every collision. Crash direction, impact speed, vehicle mass, occupant position, restraint use, road conditions and many other factors can differ from the test conditions. Review the underlying frontal, side and rollover results instead of treating one star count as a complete safety profile. Use NHTSA’s comparison limits
NHTSA cautions that Overall Vehicle Scores should be compared among vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of one another because the score includes a frontal crash-test rating. A midsize SUV and a much heavier large SUV may not be a fair head-to-head comparison even if both display five stars.
- Confirm the NHTSA vehicle class.
- Check curb weight and stay within the agency’s 250-pound comparison guidance.
- Match model year and body style.
- Verify whether the tested vehicle has the same drivetrain, seating configuration and standard or optional safety equipment as the one you are considering.
What IIHS ratings measure
Crashworthiness
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) separates crashworthiness—how well a vehicle protects occupants during a crash—from crash avoidance and mitigation—whether technology can prevent a crash or reduce its severity. Its rating program includes several test types and equipment evaluations rather than one universal number.
Because testing every model every year is not practical, IIHS says a previous model’s rating may carry over when there are no relevant changes. A carryover rating is useful evidence, but it does not mean every trim, option package or later engineering revision was independently tested.
Check the exact model-year page
Use the IIHS vehicle ratings search to select the model year, body style and equipment shown. The organization’s explanation of test categories is at About our tests. Read notes about structural changes, optional headlights, front-crash-prevention systems and seat-belt equipment. A rating for one configuration can differ from another when hardware or standard equipment changes.
How to compare SUV ratings without mixing scales
Build two separate columns
Start a comparison sheet with one section for reliability and another for safety. In the reliability section, record the organization, study, ownership window, model year, category and the specific reliability measure. In the safety section, record NHTSA frontal, side, rollover and overall results, plus IIHS crashworthiness and crash-avoidance grades when available.

Do not rank unlike numbers
A 100-point owner-survey result, a five-star NHTSA score and an IIHS grade are products of different methods. You can compare two SUVs inside one organization’s program and category, but adding or averaging numbers across programs creates a false precision. If one SUV has only an IIHS carryover result and another has a new NHTSA test, label that difference rather than implying equivalent evidence.
Resolve model-year and equipment mismatches
Use the vehicle identification details shown on each rating page. A mid-cycle refresh may alter headlights, airbags, structural members, software or automatic emergency-braking hardware without changing the marketing name. Confirm the tested equipment is standard on the trim you will buy; otherwise treat the rating as conditional.

- Identify the exact SUV: write down model year, body style, drivetrain, seating layout and trim.
- Read the reliability definition: note the study, ownership window and whether the displayed figure is quality-and-reliability or a broader overall score.
- Inspect reliability context: check whether the vehicle is new or redesigned and whether the result is based on prior-year information.
- Open NHTSA’s record: review frontal, side, rollover and crash-avoidance results, not only the star total.
- Apply the comparison rule: compare NHTSA overall scores only within the same class and within 250 pounds, as the agency advises.
- Check IIHS: select the exact model year and read whether the result is current testing or a carryover.
- Match equipment: verify that the tested safety systems, headlights and restraint hardware are installed on the trim under consideration.
- Write a qualified conclusion: describe reliability as owner experience over the stated period and safety as performance in defined assessments.
Common interpretation mistakes
Treating reliability as a lifetime prediction
A three-year dependability result cannot tell you exactly what will happen in year eight. Maintenance, climate, driving pattern, accident history and manufacturing changes all affect an individual vehicle. Use the rating to compare reported experience during its stated window.
Assuming five stars means “safe in every situation”
NHTSA stars summarize relative injury risk from selected tests. They do not cover every crash angle, speed, occupant size or roadway condition. Look at the component results and remember that restraints and correct use remain important.
Comparing unrelated vehicle classes
Vehicle size and mass influence crash outcomes and NHTSA’s scoring context. A large SUV’s score should not be presented as directly interchangeable with a much lighter small SUV’s score simply because both have stars.

Assuming a carryover rating is a fresh test
IIHS may carry a prior result forward when no relevant changes occurred. Confirm the note on the rating page and investigate any redesign, facelift or equipment change before applying it to a newer vehicle.
Calling an overall owner score “reliability”
If driving experience, resale value and dealership experience are included, the number is broader than defect frequency. Quote the named component and its definition so readers know what was actually measured.
What these ratings cannot tell you
These programs do not establish your future repair bill, local parts availability, insurance premium, comfort, fuel economy or suitability for a particular towing job. Reliability surveys may not capture every uncommon failure, and crash programs cannot reproduce every real-world collision. Use the scores as structured evidence, then verify recalls, maintenance requirements and the exact equipment for the vehicle you are evaluating.

Read reliability ratings as time-bounded reports of owner-reported problems and safety ratings as test-based estimates of crash protection, rollover risk and crash-avoidance performance. Keep the categories separate, compare like with like, and verify model year and equipment before drawing a conclusion about an SUV.
