SpaceX’s uncrewed Cargo Dragon delivers three broad kinds of cargo to the International Space Station (ISS): provisions for the crew, equipment and supplies for station operations, and scientific investigations or instruments. The exact manifest changes on every mission. NASA’s May 2026 CRS-34 mission is a current example: Dragon carried about 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies, and equipment, including food for the Expedition 74 crew.
That figure is a mission report, not a permanent Dragon capacity or a standard shopping list. NASA’s descriptions of CRS-32, CRS-33, and CRS-34 show why: one flight may emphasize biological samples and 3D printing, while another carries air-quality hardware, atomic clocks, or instruments that observe Earth and the space environment.
What Cargo Dragon supplies to the ISS
A useful way to understand a Cargo Dragon resupply flight is to separate its contents by purpose rather than by a fixed inventory. NASA’s mission releases generally group the outbound cargo into:
- Crew provisions: food and other supplies needed by the resident astronauts.
- Station and laboratory equipment: hardware, replacement items, and systems that support daily operations or experiments.
- Science investigations and instruments: research materials, test articles, and sensors that use the space station’s microgravity environment or its viewing position above Earth.
These categories overlap in practice. A laboratory device can be both station equipment and a research payload, for example. NASA’s public releases highlight selected cargo rather than publishing a complete recurring grocery list, spare-parts manifest, and experiment inventory for every flight.

Crew provisions: food and everyday supplies
Food for the resident crew
The clearest consumable identified in the current material is food. NASA’s docking account for CRS-34 says Dragon brought food, supplies, and equipment for the Expedition 74 crew. Food resupply matters because the station supports a continuously changing crew and must keep meals available between cargo flights.
The releases do not provide a complete list of menu items, package sizes, or the amount assigned to each astronaut. It would therefore be inaccurate to treat a single mission announcement as a standard ISS grocery manifest. The defensible answer is that food is part of the crew-provision category, while the exact menu and quantity depend on the flight’s plan.
Other crew consumables
NASA uses the broader word “supplies” for cargo associated with the crew, but the cited mission summaries do not enumerate every recurring consumable. They do not establish a universal list of clothing, hygiene products, medical items, or personal equipment for Cargo Dragon. Those items may be included on individual flights, but a reader should not infer their presence unless the relevant mission manifest names them.

Equipment that keeps the station running
Laboratory and operational hardware
Dragon also carries equipment for the station itself. This can include laboratory hardware, instruments, and systems needed to operate or improve research facilities. The cargo is not limited to items astronauts use personally; it can be hardware that remains installed in a rack, supports a test, or monitors conditions inside the orbital complex.
Examples from CRS-32
NASA’s CRS-32 reporting provides two concrete examples of this operational role: an air-quality monitoring system and atomic clocks. Air-quality hardware helps investigators and station managers understand the atmosphere inside a closed spacecraft, while precision clocks support experiments and measurements that depend on accurate timing. These examples come from CRS-32 and should not be read as equipment carried on every Dragon mission.

Research payloads: why the manifest changes so much
Scientific investigations are a substantial part of Dragon’s cargo. A mission may carry biological material, manufacturing feedstock, physical-science hardware, or instruments that observe Earth and nearby space. The research is selected for that particular flight, so the science section of one manifest can look very different from the next.
Biology and biotechnology
CRS-33, reported by NASA in August 2025, included bone-forming stem cells and bioprinted liver tissue. Those payloads let researchers examine how cells and tissues behave in microgravity or use the station as a controlled environment for biotechnology work. CRS-34 added equipment focused on red blood cells and the spleen, as well as a wooden bone scaffold. Together, these examples show that “medical research” on Dragon can mean living cells, tissue models, or physical structures designed to support studies of bone and blood.

Manufacturing and materials research
CRS-33 also carried 3D-printing materials and metal-printing supplies. Such materials are research inputs rather than finished consumer products: investigators use them to test how printing and fabrication behave in microgravity. The fact that CRS-33 carried these supplies does not mean every resupply flight includes a printer feedstock or a metal-processing experiment.
Physical science and space-environment instruments
CRS-34 included a charged-particle instrument and a project examining planetary formation. These payloads represent physical-science investigations that are not primarily about crew health or station maintenance. They use the station as a platform for studying particles, materials, or processes relevant to space and planetary science.
Observing Earth and the Moon
Another CRS-34 instrument measures sunlight reflected by Earth and the Moon. This kind of payload uses the station’s vantage point to collect observations of reflected light. It belongs in the science-instrument category even though it observes objects outside the station rather than testing a material inside a laboratory.

CRS-34: the latest snapshot in the cited NASA reports
NASA’s CRS-34 launch release, dated May 15, 2026, states that Dragon delivered about 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies, and equipment to the ISS. A related docking account dated May 17, 2026 describes nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies, and equipment for Expedition 74. The different wording reflects the way each release describes the mission; neither should be converted into a universal Dragon cargo figure.
The named CRS-34 research payloads make the mission’s mix clear. NASA identified a comparison of Earth-based simulators with microgravity, a wooden bone scaffold, equipment for studying red blood cells and the spleen, a charged-particle instrument, a planetary-formation investigation, and an instrument measuring sunlight reflected by Earth and the Moon. These are examples from that flight, not a recurring kit that appears on every Cargo Dragon.
How recent Dragon missions differed
The following comparison keeps NASA’s qualifiers—“about,” “nearly,” “more than,” and “approximately”—because each number is tied to a particular mission report. The figures are not interchangeable capacity specifications.
| Mission | Date reported | NASA’s cargo description | Examples named by NASA |
|---|---|---|---|
| CRS-32 | April 2025 | Approximately 6,700 pounds of cargo | Free-flying robots, an air-quality monitoring system, and atomic clocks |
| CRS-33 | August 2025 | More than 5,000 pounds of supplies | Bone-forming stem cells, 3D-printing materials, bioprinted liver tissue, and metal-printing supplies |
| CRS-34 | May 2026 | About 6,500 pounds of science investigations, supplies, and equipment; a docking report says nearly 6,500 pounds of food, supplies, and equipment | Microgravity-comparison research, a wooden bone scaffold, red-blood-cell and spleen equipment, a charged-particle instrument, planetary-formation research, and reflected-sunlight measurements |
CRS-32: robotics, air quality, and timing
CRS-32 demonstrates that a resupply mission can support both station operations and advanced research. Its named examples were free-flying robots, an air-quality monitoring system, and atomic clocks. The release reports approximately 6,700 pounds of cargo for that mission, a figure that describes CRS-32 rather than a guaranteed load for later flights.
CRS-33: cells, tissue, and printing materials
CRS-33 shows a different emphasis. NASA reported more than 5,000 pounds of supplies and highlighted bone-forming stem cells, bioprinted liver tissue, 3D-printing materials, and metal-printing supplies. The mission illustrates how biological samples and manufacturing materials can occupy a large share of a Dragon manifest without being ordinary crew provisions.

CRS-34: a broad science-and-supplies mix
CRS-34 combined crew food and general equipment with investigations spanning human biology, materials and planetary science, charged particles, and reflected sunlight. Its reported mass is about 6,500 pounds in NASA’s launch account and nearly 6,500 pounds in the docking account. The mission is the most recent example in the cited material, not evidence about flights after May 2026.
Why there is no single standard Cargo Dragon manifest
Resupply missions are planned around the station’s needs and the investigations ready for launch. Crew food may be required on one schedule, a replacement or monitoring system on another, and a time-sensitive biological sample on a third. Research teams also have different hardware, packaging, storage, and timing requirements.
That variation explains why the named payloads change from mission to mission. CRS-32 emphasized robotics, air quality, and precise timing; CRS-33 included cells, tissue, and printing inputs; CRS-34 combined crew provisions with biology, physical science, and Earth-or-Moon observation. The categories remain recognizable, but the individual items do not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to interpret the reported cargo weights
Mission totals are not a universal capacity claim
NASA’s figures are tied to individual flights and to the way each release defines the cargo being discussed. CRS-32 is reported at approximately 6,700 pounds, CRS-33 at more than 5,000 pounds, and CRS-34 at about 6,500 pounds or nearly 6,500 pounds depending on the release. Those values should not be averaged or presented as a fixed Cargo Dragon payload.
Keep the qualifier with the number
“About 6,500 pounds” is not the same claim as exactly 6,500 pounds, and “more than 5,000 pounds” does not identify an upper limit. When citing a mission, retain NASA’s wording and identify the flight and date. This prevents a mission-specific report from being mistaken for a spacecraft specification.

What Dragon brings back to Earth
Cargo Dragon is also used for return logistics. NASA’s CRS-33 account says the spacecraft returned to Earth with research and cargo. Returned material can include research samples, experiment hardware, or other cargo selected for recovery.
Outbound supplies and returned material answer different questions. Food, station equipment, and fresh research payloads describe what Dragon delivers to the ISS; recovered samples and hardware describe what the spacecraft brings home. A report about a return flight should therefore identify the returned items separately rather than adding them to the outbound supply list.
Can you get a complete item-by-item list?
Not from the high-level NASA news releases alone. They provide mission highlights and broad categories, but the cited material does not publish a complete recurring inventory of every meal, spare part, consumable, package, or research payload.
For an accurate answer about a particular flight, use that mission’s NASA launch, docking, or payload description and preserve the date. Treat named examples as confirmed contents of that mission only. Do not assume that an item mentioned for CRS-32, CRS-33, or CRS-34 was carried on the others.
The direct answer in one sentence
SpaceX Cargo Dragon delivers food and other crew provisions, equipment and supplies for ISS operations, and a changing selection of scientific investigations and instruments; NASA’s May 2026 CRS-34 report puts that mission’s combined science, supplies, and equipment at about 6,500 pounds, while earlier flights carried different research and reported different totals.
