StudyBuddy is a small AI study assistant that lets a student ask questions about uploaded lecture notes and PDFs, request simpler explanations, and create revision materials. Its author, Mayank Tiwari, describes a retrieval-based design that finds relevant passages in those documents and gives them to a language model to help shape its response.
What can StudyBuddy help you do?
StudyBuddy is presented as a personal study assistant for someone reviewing their own course materials. Rather than asking a model to answer from general knowledge alone, the intended workflow starts with lecture notes and PDFs the user supplies.
- Ask questions about uploaded material.
- Ask for a simpler explanation of a difficult passage or concept.
- Generate multiple-choice quizzes for practice.
- Create quick revision notes from the documents.
- See relevant retrieved information alongside an answer, so the response is connected to source material.
Tiwari describes the goal as: “Turn the notes my friend already has into something they can actually talk to.” The description comes from his project article on DEV Community.
How does its document-question workflow work?
The author describes StudyBuddy as using retrieval-augmented generation, commonly shortened to RAG. In this approach, the system searches a user’s documents for passages related to a question and supplies those passages to a language model as context for its answer.

- Extract: Read text from the uploaded PDF.
- Split: Divide the extracted text into smaller chunks that can be searched and retrieved.
- Embed and store: Convert chunks into embeddings and store them in ChromaDB.
- Retrieve: Search for document sections relevant to the user’s question.
- Generate: Provide the retrieved sections to an open-weight model to produce a response.
This design is intended to anchor answers in the uploaded notes. Retrieval does not, by itself, guarantee that every answer is correct, complete, or limited to the source documents; the article supplies no accuracy measurements or independent evaluation.
What technology does the project use?
Tiwari lists Python and Streamlit alongside Ollama/Grok, an open-weight large language model, LangChain, Hugging Face embeddings, ChromaDB, and PDF processing. The project layout he describes includes app.py, rag.py, pdf_processor.py, prompts.py, requirements.txt, README.md, and .gitignore. These are the author’s descriptions; the repository’s current contents and dependencies have not been independently verified.

The article says models can be swapped. It identifies speed, accuracy, hardware, model size, and reasoning ability as factors to consider, but does not name a preferred model version, publish benchmark results, or specify minimum hardware. Those details are therefore not enough to determine which model or computer will work best for a particular student.

What does “private” mean for StudyBuddy?
The author says a local setup using Ollama and an open-weight model can keep documents on the user’s machine. That is a description of the intended local configuration, not an independent security audit or a guarantee about every installation.

The linked live demo is a separate case. The project article does not explain where that hosted instance processes files, what data it transmits or retains, or what privacy controls it applies. Do not assume that the hosted demo has the same data-handling behavior as a local setup. The author links the demo at Streamlit and the project repository at GitHub; their current availability and contents have not been independently checked.

StudyBuddy’s described purpose is narrow and practical: turning personal lecture notes and PDFs into material a student can question, review, and use for practice. It may be relevant to someone interested in a document-grounded study workflow or in how a small RAG application is assembled. The available project description supports those use cases, but not claims about measured learning outcomes, answer quality, or suitability for a particular course.
