Seeing or downloading an image, song, or font does not by itself give you permission to reuse it. For a class presentation, video, portfolio, or public post, identify the exact asset and creator, read the item’s rights statement or license, match the terms to your audience and editing plans, and keep a record of what you found. U.S. copyright law has educational exceptions and fair use, but neither is an automatic pass for every student project.
Start with the use, not the file
Copyright questions depend on what you plan to do with a particular work. The same photograph might be shown briefly in a closed classroom presentation, embedded in a portfolio, or posted to an unrestricted public site. Those are different audiences and distributions, so permission that works for one situation may not cover another.
Before choosing an asset, write down:
- the exact image, recording, composition, font file, or other item;
- the creator and rights holder, if identified;
- the source page and the date you accessed it;
- how you will use it, including cropping, color changes, remixing, or music synchronization; and
- who will see the finished project: only an instructor, an enrolled class, a school platform, a portfolio audience, or the general public.
Then look for one of three clear routes: a license that covers the planned use, permission from the rights holder, or a public-domain work. Fair use and specific educational exceptions are additional legal possibilities, but they require analysis of the actual circumstances.
Is educational use automatically allowed?
No. Teaching, scholarship, and research appear as examples in the fair-use statute, but they do not create a blanket student exemption. The U.S. Copyright Office explains: “Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances.” A court weighs the facts of the individual use rather than applying a student, classroom, or “school project” label.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Section 107 lists four considerations:
- Purpose and character: nonprofit educational work can favor fair use, while commercial or promotional use generally makes the analysis harder. Transformative commentary or criticism may matter, but calling a project educational is not enough.
- Nature of the work: using a factual or published work can differ from copying a highly creative, unpublished work.
- Amount and substantiality: both the quantity and the importance of the portion matter. A short but central hook of a song can be more significant than a longer, less important passage.
- Effect on the potential market: consider whether your use substitutes for a licensed copy or harms a market for the work.
No single factor decides every case. There is also no legal rule that an excerpt under a particular number of seconds, words, musical notes, or percentage is always safe. Claims such as “under 10% is legal” are not reliable guidance.
Classroom exceptions are narrower than public posting
Section 110(1) provides a limited exemption for performances or displays by instructors or pupils during face-to-face teaching at a nonprofit educational institution, in a classroom or similar instructional place, subject to statutory conditions. Section 110(2) addresses qualifying mediated instructional transmissions under its own requirements. These provisions should not be generalized into permission to upload any class project to an unrestricted website.
A project submitted privately, shown to an enrolled class, placed on a school system, and published publicly can therefore require different rights analysis. Ask your instructor or school about its platform, access controls, and assignment policy. If the audience changes later, review the asset terms again instead of assuming the original classroom context follows the file.

A practical clearance workflow
1. Build an asset register
Create a spreadsheet or text file alongside the project. For every image, recording, composition, and font, record the title or description, creator, source page, rights statement, license name and version, your intended edits, and the people who will receive the work. Save a PDF, screenshot, or other dated record of the license when the site allows it.
2. Classify the distribution
Mark the project as one of these, or describe a more precise situation:

- private submission to an instructor;
- display in a classroom or restricted school system;
- school-community or portfolio access; or
- unrestricted public, promotional, or monetized distribution.
Moving from a restricted class audience to public access can change which license conditions, exceptions, and market effects are relevant.
3. Prefer an explicit route
Choose material with clear reuse terms, a verified public-domain status, or written permission. Licensing, statutory exceptions, and public-domain status are separate routes; do not treat a vague “free download” label as any of them.

Read the actual license attached to the specific work, not merely a site-wide slogan. Check whether it permits your audience, edits, commercial context, and distribution method. For Creative Commons material, record the exact license and version.
5. Prepare attribution and evidence
Keep the creator, title, source link, license/version, and a description of changes where required. Attribution is a condition of many licenses; it is not a substitute for permission when the license does not cover your use. Keep your evidence with the project files in case the page changes.
6. Escalate uncertainty
If the terms do not clearly cover your plan, ask the rights holder, instructor, or school. For a public, promotional, or monetized release, seek permission or qualified legal advice rather than relying on an assumed classroom exception.

Can I use this picture for my school project?
Treat a photograph, illustration, screenshot, or other original visual work as potentially protected unless reliable information says otherwise. Copyright generally exists when an original work is fixed in a tangible medium. Owning a print, book, or downloaded file is not the same as owning copyright in the image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesImage ownership can be difficult to establish. A library, museum, archive, or collection may host an item without owning its copyright or granting reuse permission. Read the item-level rights and restrictions statement. The Library of Congress, for example, generally does not own copyright in all materials in its collections and places responsibility for independent rights assessment on users.
For an image, check:
- the named photographer, illustrator, agency, or other rights holder;
- whether the page grants a license and what audiences it covers;
- whether cropping, overlays, color changes, or other adaptations are allowed;
- whether attribution has a specified format; and
- whether your portfolio or public post falls outside a classroom-only permission.
If no license or permission is visible, do not infer one from the fact that the image is searchable, viewable, or downloadable.
Can I use copyrighted music in a school video?
Music involves separate rights in the musical composition and in a particular performance or sound recording. A short excerpt is not automatically safe. Fair use has no fixed number of seconds or percentage, and the amount and importance of what you take are considered alongside purpose, the nature of the work, and market effect.
When music is synchronized with moving images, inspect the exact license. Under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 legal code, synchronizing a musical work, performance, or sound recording with moving images creates adapted material. That makes the license’s adaptation and ShareAlike conditions relevant when you share the resulting video.

Before exporting a video, verify:
- that the license covers synchronization with images;
- whether the video may be shared publicly or only in a noncommercial setting;
- whether editing, looping, fading, or remixing is allowed;
- what attribution must appear in the video or description; and
- what ShareAlike or other downstream condition applies to your adapted work.
If your project uses a commercial recording without clear permission, ask the instructor whether a licensed alternative or a controlled classroom presentation is acceptable. Do not describe a song as cleared merely because the video is for a grade.
What do Creative Commons labels actually permit?
“Creative Commons” is a family of licenses, not one universal permission. Every Creative Commons license requires attribution, while additional elements change what you may do:
| License element | What to check |
|---|---|
| BY | Give the required credit, identify the work, provide the license information, and note changes where required. |
| NC | NonCommercial restricts commercial use. A public project connected to promotion, fundraising, or monetization needs careful review. |
| ND | NoDerivatives restricts sharing adaptations. Cropping, remixing, translating, or synchronizing may create an adaptation that cannot be distributed under the license. |
| SA | ShareAlike imposes a license condition on adaptations that you share. Check the exact license version for the required terms. |
Use the precise license name and version attached to the item. A credit line alone does not repair a use prohibited by NC, ND, SA, or another term.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Can I use a font I downloaded for my project?
Typeface design and font software are related but not identical legal issues. U.S. Copyright Office regulations list “Typeface as typeface” among material not subject to copyright, and Circular 33 explains that copyright generally does not protect typeface or mere variations of typographic ornamentation or lettering. The circular also discusses limited situations involving some typeface, typefont, lettering, calligraphy, and separately protectable surface decoration.

That distinction does not mean every font file is free to copy or redistribute. A font file is software distributed under terms set by its provider. The relevant license may control installation on school or personal devices, embedding in a PDF or website, web distribution, modification, and redistribution. There is no universal permission for every font file or use.

Read the provider’s license for the exact file. If it only grants desktop use, do not assume that embedding it in a public website or sending the file to classmates is covered. Keep the license record and ask the provider or your school when the wording is unclear.
How public-domain material fits in
Public domain can be a straightforward route, but verify the particular work and jurisdiction. The U.S. Copyright Office’s current overview states that works published in the United States before January 1, 1931 are currently in the public domain because their copyright protection expired. That is a dated U.S. cutoff, not a statement about every country, later edition, translation, recording, photograph, or newly arranged version.
Check what exactly is public domain. An old musical composition may be public domain while a modern recording of it remains protected. A historic painting may be public domain while a new photograph, restoration, or graphic reproduction has separate considerations. Save the source’s public-domain statement and identify the version you actually used.

Compare candidate assets before you commit
When two possible assets seem similar, evaluate them on the same axes rather than choosing only by appearance or download convenience.
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Intended use | Is this a private submission, in-class display, portfolio item, or public online release? |
| Audience and access | Who can view the result: an instructor, enrolled students, the school community, or anyone online? |
| Adaptation | Will you crop, remix, recolor, edit, translate, or synchronize the asset with video? |
| Attribution | What creator, title, source, license/version, and modification notice must appear? |
| Restrictions | Do NonCommercial, NoDerivatives, ShareAlike, embedding, or redistribution terms affect the plan? |
| Evidence | Have you saved the rights statement, permission email, or license record with the project? |
Common mistakes and safer fixes
- “It is online, so it is free.” Online availability describes access, not reuse rights. Find the item-level license or seek permission.
- “It is for school, so fair use applies.” Educational purpose is one consideration, not a conclusion. Analyze all four factors and the audience.
- “I used less than 10%.” No universal percentage or seconds rule exists. Consider the amount and qualitative importance in context.
- “I credited the creator, so I am covered.” Attribution satisfies a license condition when required; it does not create permission where none exists.
- “The archive owns it because it hosts it.” Hosting and copyright ownership can be different. Read the collection’s restrictions and the item record.
- “The font has no copyright, so I can share the file.” Typeface protection and font-software licensing are distinct. Follow the file’s provider license.
- “The classroom exception covers my public upload.” Face-to-face and mediated instructional exceptions have statutory conditions and do not automatically authorize unrestricted posting.
What to do when the answer is still unclear
Pause before publishing and describe the exact use in a short message to the rights holder or instructor: identify the asset, explain the assignment, state the audience, list edits, and ask whether the proposed distribution is permitted. Keep the reply with your project records. If permission is refused or unavailable, replace the asset with one whose license clearly fits, limit access as instructed, or obtain advice from your school or a qualified attorney. U.S. rules discussed here do not determine the law in other countries or guarantee the outcome of a particular dispute.
