Stem export is the process of rendering a sampler-based project into separate, time-aligned audio files for mixing, remixing, collaboration, or transfer. You export the tracks or groups that already exist in your DAW, including whatever routing and processing you deliberately include. It is not the same as using source-separation software to guess instruments from a finished stereo recording.
That distinction determines the quality of the result: a project export preserves known arrangements and routing, while separation produces estimates that can contain bleed, misplaced sounds, and artifacts.
What a stem is in a sampler-based project
A stem is a rendered audio file representing a meaningful group of musical sources. Typical groups are vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and drums. In a sampler-heavy session, a stem might be a drum group containing several sampled instruments, a melodic-sample bus, or a complete sampler track with its effects printed into the file.
The samples, MIDI notes, automation, and pattern data remain inside the DAW project until you render them. Stem export turns the playback of selected tracks or groups into ordinary audio files. The files can then be opened in another session without requiring the recipient to own the sampler, sample library, plug-ins, or original project.

Stem versus part
Terminology is not perfectly consistent. A stem usually combines related sources into a useful musical group. Rendering every individual drum sound, synth layer, or sampler track creates separate files often called parts. Some producers use “stem” for both. In Ableton’s terminology, grouped rendered sources are stems, while individual track renders may be called parts; this everyday use is different from the proprietary Native Instruments Stems format.
Your delivery can contain a few broad stems, many individual parts, or both. The correct choice depends on what the next person needs to control.
Project export and source separation are different jobs
The phrase “stem export” is sometimes confused with separating a finished song into vocals, drums, bass, and other material. These workflows start with different source material and provide very different levels of control.

Rendering an existing production
When you render the project, the DAW uses the actual arrangement: sampler playback, MIDI timing, clip edits, automation, panning, fader levels, buses, returns, and the effects included by the export routing. The result is a controlled representation of the session. If you still have the source project, this is the preferred way to deliver stems.
Separating a premixed recording
Source separation starts after the individual tracks have already been combined. Ableton Live’s separation feature creates four categories: Vocals, Drums, Bass, and Others. “Others” contains material not detected as the first three categories. The model runs locally in Live and is intended for deconstructing material, extracting instruments for samples, remixing, and working with DJ mixes.
Because the original tracks are no longer available, the output is an estimate rather than a recovery. Hi-hats can appear in Others, and a chorused synthesizer can be classified with Vocals. Tonal character, arrangement density, and the selected quality mode affect the result. Low-bitrate MP3 or low-sample-rate input can produce poorer-sounding stems.

What determines what each exported file contains
Render scope
First decide whether the recipient wants broad group stems, individual track parts, or both. In Live, an “All Individual Tracks” export can create a file for each audio-producing track, including groups, returns, and Main. Group tracks and their member tracks can be output together, but they do not contain the same processing: a group render includes effects placed on the group, while separately rendered member tracks do not include those group effects.

Faders, automation, and bus processing
Live 12 individual-track exports are post-fader. That means the exported level follows the track fader and its automation. The Main file is the post-fader Main output. Return and Main effects can be included when exporting individual or selected tracks through the “Include Return and Main Effects” option. Decide this with the recipient before rendering: printing a reverb return may preserve the intended sound, but it removes the ability to rebalance that reverb independently.
Timing and alignment
Every handoff file should begin at the same timeline position and cover the same full arrangement. Include silence before an instrument enters and continue to the end, even when a particular part starts late or stops early. Live’s individual exports have the same length, which lets them line up when imported into another multitrack session.

Do not trim each file to its first transient unless the recipient specifically requests that format. Trimming destroys the shared timeline and forces manual placement.
A reliable Ableton Live export procedure
The labels below describe the documented Live workflow. Other DAWs may use different names or handle buses, tails, automation, and effects differently, so verify those behaviors in the relevant manual.

- Agree on the delivery scope. Ask whether the receiver needs group stems, individual sampler and audio tracks, or both. Decide whether returns and Main effects should be printed. Write down the arrangement start and end points and the target sample rate and bit depth.
- Open the Export Audio/Video dialog and select the source scope. For a full multitrack handoff, choose “All Individual Tracks.” For a smaller delivery, select the tracks or groups requested. Include a group when its bus processing is part of the sound the receiver must hear.
- Set Render Start and Render Length for the entire arrangement. The range must run from the beginning to the very end, regardless of where an individual instrument begins or ends. This produces files with a common start position and length.
- Turn off loop rendering. A handoff should represent the complete arrangement rather than only the loop brace. Check that the export range, not the loop region, controls the render.
- Keep mono conversion and normalization off for interchange. Mono conversion changes channel format, and normalization changes gain. Leave both disabled unless the receiving engineer has explicitly requested them.
- Match the receiving session’s sample rate. Use the same rate as the person importing the files. Sample-rate conversion generally causes minimal quality degradation, but agreeing on one rate avoids an unnecessary conversion and keeps the handoff predictable.
- Choose a lossless PCM format. WAV or AIFF is appropriate for interchange. Live 12 also offers FLAC, but confirm that the receiving application accepts it before choosing it for a collaboration.
- Set bit depth and dithering deliberately. Live offers 16-, 24-, and 32-bit options. Ableton’s delivery guidance recommends 32-bit to avoid double dithering. Apply dithering only once to a given audio file; if the recipient will perform further processing or a final master, agree on who will make that one conversion.
- Handle return and Main effects explicitly. If the destination must reproduce the producer’s processed sound, enable “Include Return and Main Effects” where appropriate. If the destination needs independent mixing control, leave those effects out and provide the dry or track-level material instead.
- Render and inspect the files. Check that every expected track was created, that names identify the source, that lengths match, and that no track is unexpectedly silent, clipped, or missing its bus processing. Listen to the first and last bars as well as the loudest section.
- Import without changing timing. Place each file at its original start position. In Live, disable Auto-Warp Long Samples so the files retain their exact starts, and set the receiving Live Set tempo to match the source. Change tempo only after confirming alignment; tempo changes require warping.
Choosing stems, parts, or both
Use broad group stems when
- The recipient is mixing or mastering and only needs control over major musical sections.
- You want to preserve a complex sampler bus, including its internal balance and group effects.
- A compact delivery is more useful than dozens of files.
Use individual parts when
- The receiver must replace a sample, edit a one-shot, rebalance layers, or process each sound separately.
- The sampler or plug-in cannot be supplied and the audio needs to remain editable at the track level.
- You are archiving the production and want a detailed reconstruction path.
Deliver both when
A practical compromise is to provide a folder of individual parts plus a second folder of group stems. The parts preserve flexibility; the groups document the intended bus balance and give the mixer a quick reference. Label the folders and make clear whether group effects are printed.

Technical settings that commonly cause handoff problems

What Live’s source-separation output can and cannot do
When no project tracks exist, Live’s separation tool is a useful fallback, but it should be treated as creative extraction rather than a technical stem export. It analyzes the recording and writes four categories: Vocals, Drums, Bass, and Others. The output is fixed at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit WAV in the current Stem Separation FAQ, regardless of preference settings.
Expect some leakage between categories. A drum microphone, hi-hat, bass harmonic, or wide synthesizer can share frequency and timing characteristics with another category. The tool may therefore place a sound in an unexpected file, and artifacts can become more obvious when the extracted stem is soloed or heavily processed.
Use separation when the goal is to isolate a broad musical idea from an existing recording. If you can access the original sampler session, render its tracks instead; that route preserves the arrangement and gives you known control over routing, timing, and effects.

Final decision checklist
- Do you still have the DAW project and separate sampler tracks? Render those tracks; do not use source separation.
- Does the recipient need mix control or only a reference of the producer’s balance? Choose individual parts, group stems, or both accordingly.
- Have you agreed on start and end points, sample rate, bit depth, dithering, and effect printing?
- Are all files lossless, the same length, and clearly named?
- Did you verify the import at the original start position before changing tempo or warping?
- Are you separating a finished mix? Treat the result as an estimate with possible bleed and artifacts, not as the original sampler tracks.
