In a boiling-water reactor (BWR), steam separators remove liquid water droplets carried along with the steam-water mixture leaving the reactor core. They sit inside the reactor vessel, before the steam dryer and main steamline: reactor heat makes the steam, separators remove entrained liquid, and the steam then continues toward the turbine. A pressurized-water reactor (PWR) uses a different steam-generation arrangement, so this explanation of in-vessel separators applies to the BWR steam path, not every nuclear plant.
What a steam separator does
Water in a BWR vessel is heated by the reactor core until some of it boils. The flow leaving the top of the core is not simply a stream of dry steam: it is a steam-water mixture, with liquid droplets traveling along with the vapor. A steam separator removes those carried-over droplets from the mixture.
The separator is therefore a moisture-removal component, not the equipment that creates steam. Heat from the reactor causes boiling; the separator acts on the mixture after it has risen from the core. Its job is to separate the liquid phase from the steam phase and direct each onward along a different route.

The NRC’s overview of boiling-water reactors describes the mixture leaving the top of the core and entering two stages of moisture separation. Only after droplets are removed does the steam proceed to the steamline.

Where separators fit in a BWR
The relevant process sequence is:
Reactor core → steam-water mixture → moisture separators → steam dryer → main steamline → turbine-generator
This sequence describes the BWR route discussed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The separators are inside the reactor vessel. The dryer is a separate assembly mounted above them, and the main steamline carries steam onward from the vessel toward the turbine.
Water removed by a separator does not follow the steam path to the turbine. In the IAEA-described arrangement, separated water exits from the lower part of the separator and rejoins the surrounding flow in the vessel. The vapor leaves at the top, enters the wet-steam region below the dryer, and then passes through that additional moisture-removal stage.

Keeping these components distinct helps make plant diagrams easier to read. A line or description that says steam passes through the separators and then the dryer is identifying two successive assemblies, not two names for the same piece of equipment. The separators remove droplets from the rising mixture; the dryer provides a further drying stage above them.
How a separator removes droplets
The documented fixed axial-flow design
The IAEA’s description of a fixed axial-flow design explains the mechanism in more detail. The rising mixture enters through a standpipe and encounters vanes that set the flow swirling. As the mixture moves through the separator stages, centrifugal forces move liquid out of the steam stream. The separated water drains from the lower portion of the assembly, while steam exits the top.
In plain terms, the separator changes the flow so that water droplets are driven away from the vapor stream and can be collected and returned to the vessel flow. The component does not need to boil the water or turn it into steam; it sorts the two phases already present in the incoming mixture. The exact flow path and internal geometry described here belong to the IAEA’s fixed design description, rather than being a guarantee that every BWR has identical internals.

Why the description has two stages
The NRC overview states that the steam-water mixture enters two stages of moisture separation before steam is allowed into the steamline. That is a useful description of the process sequence in the cited overview: the flow encounters staged separation, then continues onward. It should not be read as a universal specification for every reactor design or as a claim that all separators use identical vanes, dimensions, or internal layouts.

Together, these sources establish the functional division: separation first removes liquid carried up from the core, and the dryer provides another moisture-removal stage before steam proceeds out of the vessel. They do not establish a general efficiency percentage or a single moisture-carryover figure for all plants.

The key distinction is both functional and physical: the separator and dryer are separate assemblies in sequence. Calling the separator a dryer, or treating the dryer as simply another name for a separator, obscures the BWR vessel layout described by the IAEA.

Why the BWR and PWR distinction matters
A BWR boils reactor coolant in the reactor vessel. The resulting steam-water mixture rises from the core, passes through moisture separation and drying equipment, and travels from the vessel toward the turbine. That is why the separator described here is part of the BWR’s in-vessel steam path.
A PWR works differently: its primary coolant is kept from boiling, and a steam generator produces the steam that drives the turbine. The NRC describes BWR and PWR steam generation as distinct arrangements. A reader should not assume that every nuclear plant has the same in-vessel separator-and-dryer sequence simply because both reactor types ultimately use steam to drive a turbine-generator.
This distinction also helps avoid an imprecise use of the word “separator.” The subject here is a BWR reactor-vessel component that removes droplets from the core-exit mixture. It is not a generic description of all equipment that may separate fluids elsewhere in a power plant, nor does it describe how a PWR’s steam generator makes turbine steam.

What the available figures do—and do not—say
The sources cited for this explanation identify the separator’s role and describe a two-stage separation sequence in the NRC’s BWR overview. They do not provide a general separator efficiency, a universal moisture-carryover limit, or a numeric performance figure that can responsibly be assigned to BWR separators as a class. No such number should be inferred from the fact that there are two stages or from the fixed-design description.
Likewise, a design-specific account of vanes and centrifugal separation should not be converted into a comparison ranking different reactor internals. The cited material supports describing the documented arrangement and its flow paths; it does not establish that one vendor, design, or plant performs better than another. Performance claims need a stated measurement, operating context, and source rather than an assumed value.
Installation is a distinct issue from operating function
The NRC’s Information Notice 84-79, dated November 5, 1984, documented a failure to properly install a steam separator at Vermont Yankee. It is a historical example showing that correct installation matters for this specialized reactor-vessel internal. It is not evidence of a present-day fleet-wide condition, nor should it be treated as current operating guidance.

The notice is relevant as a specific historical event, not as a basis for generalized claims about current plants.
How to read a simplified BWR flow diagram
- Start at the core. Reactor heat boils water, and a steam-water mixture rises from the top of the core.
- Identify the separators. The mixture enters moisture-separation stages; liquid droplets are removed from the steam stream.
- Follow the two paths. In the IAEA-described fixed arrangement, separated water leaves near the bottom and rejoins vessel flow, while steam leaves at the top.
- Look above the separators for the dryer. It is a separate assembly that provides another moisture-removal stage.
- Trace the outlet. Steam proceeds to the main steamline and then to the turbine-generator.
If a diagram only labels “steam separators,” it may omit design details such as the standpipe, vanes, or water return path. Those details are established for the fixed axial-flow design described by the IAEA, not necessarily for every BWR. For a general overview, the reliable reading is functional: the separators remove entrained liquid before the dryer and the steamline.
