Valve’s reported Steam Frame hardware-reference release includes STEP models for the VR core module, head strap, and controllers. Those files can help makers inspect mounting geometry, design add-ons, and avoid clashes with tracking hardware. They do not, on the evidence currently available, provide a verified table of the headset’s overall width, height, depth, face-to-lens distance, or strap range—and they cannot prove that the headset will be comfortable on a particular face.
What the Steam Frame CAD release reportedly contains
Hackaday reported on October 10, 2026, that Valve’s public hardware-reference repository contains STEP models for three major physical groups:
- VR core module: the main headset body and its surrounding mounting geometry.
- Head strap: reference geometry for the support structure that holds the core module.
- Controllers: models that show the controller envelope and documented tracking-related features.
The report also describes documentation beyond the mechanical solids. Controller infrared-tracking LED locations are identified, giving designers a clearance constraint when adding grips, shells, mounts, or other parts. Documentation for the front expansion port reportedly exposes MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces. Reference designs in KiCad and Altium are also reported.
The repository itself was not independently inspectable because its page returned an access-denied response during the available review. Therefore, the file inventory above is attributed to Hackaday’s report linking to Valve’s repository. Exact filenames, revision history, dimension annotations, tolerances, and reuse terms should not be treated as verified until the official files can be opened directly.

What the models can tell you about dimensions
Relative geometry and interfaces
A STEP model is most useful for relationships between parts. In a CAD viewer, you can inspect where the core module meets the strap, how far a proposed bracket sits from the shell, and whether a fastener, hinge, or cable route would occupy the same space as an existing feature. You can also create reference planes and measure distances in the units embedded in the file, provided the source model is imported at its native scale.
This makes the files valuable for enclosure work, replacement pads, top-strap adapters, counterweight mounts, cable guides, face-interface experiments, and controller accessories. A maker can align a new part to actual surfaces instead of estimating from photographs.
Tracking and expansion-port clearances
The reported LED-location documentation matters because controller add-ons can interfere with infrared tracking even when the outer shell appears to fit. A grip that covers, shadows, or moves an LED relative to the controller’s designed optical layout may reduce tracking reliability. Keep the documented LED regions unobstructed and avoid materials or geometry that intrude into their line of sight.

The reported front expansion-port documentation is similarly useful for physical design. A front accessory must leave room for the connector and any cable bend radius, while also avoiding the MIPI camera and PCI Express interfaces described in the reference material. Electrical pin compatibility, signal integrity, power limits, and software support are separate questions; a matching opening in a CAD model does not establish that an add-on will function electronically.
What is not currently established
No accessible source in the available material verifies Steam Frame’s exact overall width, height, depth, eye-to-lens distance, nose opening, strap adjustment range, component tolerances, or face-interface dimensions. Do not copy a number from a third-party drawing or infer one from a screenshot and present it as an official specification. If you need a production-critical measurement, inspect the official model directly or measure a physical unit and record the method.

Why CAD dimensions do not equal headset fit
Hard geometry versus soft tissue
CAD describes rigid surfaces. Fit depends on skin, hair, facial shape, glasses, eye spacing, and how padding compresses over time. A face gasket can spread load over a broad area, create a pressure point near the nose, or seal differently when the wearer looks up or down. None of those effects is represented by a bare STEP solid.

Balance and movement
Mass distribution can matter as much as the outer dimensions. PC Gamer’s September 14, 2026 review lists the headset weight as 440 g and describes a front-and-back balance with the battery at the rear. The 440 g figure is the review’s published product specification; it should not be confused with an independently documented scale protocol. The reviewer’s comfort impressions are a hands-on account, not a population-wide result.

Conversely, a rear support or counterweight may improve perceived balance for one wearer while causing pressure for another.
Optics and eye position
Lens alignment depends on the user’s eyes being positioned within the headset’s intended range. A printed spacer or new face interface may alter eye relief, field of view, glare, and the ability to see the full display. CAD can show where a spacer sits, but it cannot establish visual quality or prescription-lens performance. Valve lists custom virtual-reality lenses, yet their availability and suitability should be checked for the buyer’s region and prescription.

How to use the files when designing an add-on
- Obtain the official release and preserve the originals. Download the files from Valve’s hardware-reference repository when it is accessible. Keep an untouched copy, note the download date and revision, and read the repository’s license before publishing, selling, or redistributing a derivative part. The license was not independently verified in the available material.
- Import at native scale. Open the STEP file in a CAD application that supports STEP. Confirm the document units and import a known reference dimension if one is supplied. Do not rescale by eye to match a product photograph.
- Identify the interface surfaces. Mark screw holes, bosses, rails, strap anchors, shell edges, port openings, vents, cameras, controls, and any surfaces that must remain removable. Build construction planes from those references rather than from visually convenient but nonfunctional faces.
- Create an interference envelope. Add clearance around moving parts, cables, buttons, vents, and tracking features. For controllers, treat the documented infrared LED positions as keep-out zones. For a front accessory, include the expansion-port opening, connector body, and cable-bend space.
- Account for manufacturing. Add draft, wall thickness, fastener access, print orientation, support removal, and material shrinkage appropriate to the process. A mathematically perfect shell can be unprintable or impossible to assemble.
- Prototype before committing. Make a low-cost mock-up or thin test piece and check attachment, comfort, controls, sensor visibility, and cable routing on the real headset. A model match is not manufacturer-certified compatibility.
- Test tracking and optics. With the part installed, verify controller tracking throughout the intended range of motion and check that cameras, vents, displays, and controls remain unobstructed. Test with the user’s normal glasses or lenses if they wear them.
- Document the revision. Record the headset firmware or hardware revision, the CAD revision, material, dimensions you measured, and any limitations. This prevents a later file update from being mistaken for the version you tested.
Fit and accessory checks that matter most
Mounting and structural load
Check whether the attachment loads a surface designed to carry force. Thin cosmetic panels, camera surrounds, and port covers may not tolerate a rigid cantilever. Prefer multiple mounting points and broad contact areas when the accessory adds leverage. Ensure that the part can be removed without stressing cables or scraping lenses.
Face, nose, and glasses clearance
Check the full range of eye and head movement, not just a centered fit. Look for contact at the bridge of the nose, brow, cheeks, and temples. If the design changes gasket compression, test several users or at least several face shapes; one person’s successful seal is not evidence of universal fit.
Recommended Free Tools
Strap adjustment and pressure
Verify that every adjustment remains reachable after installation and that the strap does not bottom out before achieving a stable fit. Observe pressure after an extended session rather than judging only during a one-minute static check. The CAD model can confirm attachment geometry, but it cannot predict pressure hot spots.

Sensors, vents, and controls
Keep cameras, tracking emitters, microphones, vents, buttons, and adjustment wheels clear. A thin cover can still degrade performance if it changes a camera’s field of view or traps heat. Controller shells should preserve trigger travel, grip detection, charging access, and the documented LED clearances.
Official fit-oriented options
Valve lists a headset top strap and an extended light blocker in its Ergonomic Accessories Kit. These are purpose-built options for readers whose priorities are additional top support or reduced light leakage. A listed accessory is not a guarantee of comfort: head shape, hair, glasses, and personal pressure tolerance still vary.
Valve also lists custom virtual-reality lenses. They may address prescription or lens-position needs that a mechanical spacer cannot solve, but readers should confirm prescription range, regional ordering, returns, and current availability on the official product page before purchasing.

Common mistakes and their fixes
- Publishing guessed dimensions: Replace estimates from photographs with measurements taken from the official model or a physical unit, and state the method.
- Treating a STEP import as certification: Label a design as maker-developed until it has been physically tested; geometric alignment alone proves only that the digital parts intersect as expected.
- Covering tracking LEDs: Move the grip or shell away from the documented LED locations and retest tracking across motion, distance, and lighting conditions.
- Ignoring cables at the expansion port: Model connector depth and bend radius, then verify that the cable can be inserted and removed without levering against the shell.
- Optimizing for one face: Test multiple users or provide adjustment and interchangeable padding. Comfort for one reviewer is not a statistical fit guarantee.
- Overlooking revision changes: Record the exact file revision and headset hardware version; a later repository update may alter interfaces.
- Skipping the license: Read Valve’s current reuse terms before distributing files, modified models, or manufactured parts. Those terms were not verified in the accessible sources.
What is still worth verifying before relying on the files
Before a production design or purchase decision, confirm the official repository’s exact file inventory, dimension annotations, revision identifiers, and license. Refresh Valve’s current headset specifications and accessory names because product pages, stock, and regional availability can change. For third-party parts, obtain explicit Steam Frame compatibility information and test the installed item rather than relying on a marketing photograph.
The practical takeaway
Steam Frame CAD files are most valuable as a design reference: they can reveal how the core module, strap, controllers, tracking LEDs, and front interfaces relate in space. They are not a substitute for an official dimension sheet, a fit study, or hands-on testing. Use them to eliminate geometric conflicts, then validate comfort, balance, tracking, optics, thermal behavior, and durability on the actual headset.
