Verified ratings tell you how a game is expected to work on a particular Steam device, especially how much setup it needs—not whether the game is good. Steam Deck ratings describe play on the Deck; Valve has also expanded its program to Steam Machine and Steam Frame. On Steam Frame, “Standalone Verified” means the game runs on the headset itself, not that it has been tested while streaming from a PC.
What Steam Deck’s four ratings mean
Valve’s Steam Deck page uses four categories. The label describes the game’s current compatibility status on Deck, not a permanent guarantee for every future game or platform update.
- Verified: Valve says, “The game works great on Steam Deck, right out of the box.” It is intended to work well without manual configuration.
- Playable: The game works, but you may need to make adjustments. Valve’s examples include selecting a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to navigate a launcher.
- Unsupported: Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Steam Deck. This is a current status, not a prediction about future versions.
- Unknown: Valve has not checked the game’s compatibility. It does not mean the game is known to fail.

What Valve checks for a Deck Verified label
Valve evaluates four areas for the Verified mark:
- Input: The game supports the Deck controller, uses appropriate controller icons, and brings up the on-screen keyboard automatically when needed.
- Display: It supports the Deck’s default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, uses appropriate default settings, and displays legible text.
- Seamlessness: It has no compatibility warnings, and any launcher can be navigated with a controller.
- System support: If the game uses Proton, the game and its middleware must work with it. Valve’s criteria specifically include anti-cheat support.
These checks explain why a game can run but still be Playable rather than Verified: a required touchscreen interaction, awkward launcher, or other manual adjustment can affect the out-of-box experience.

Do Deck ratings apply to LCD and OLED models?
Yes. Valve says Steam Deck compatibility ratings apply to both LCD and OLED models. Valve also says its review process is ongoing as games, updates, and the Deck change, so a label can become outdated. Check the current compatibility details on the game’s Steam store or library page rather than treating an old rating as a permanent guarantee.
How Steam Machine and Steam Frame fit into the program
Valve announced on June 4, 2026, that it was expanding the Verified program to Steam Machine and Steam Frame. The goal is to help customers understand a game’s out-of-box experience on the device named by its rating. A Deck label should not be read as a Machine or Frame certification. Steam Machine
Steam Machine is a SteamOS PC designed in part for living-room play. Valve describes its software stack as SteamOS, the Steam interface, and Proton. In its June 4, 2026 announcement, Valve said the hardware is roughly six times as powerful as a Steam Deck. That is Valve’s relative hardware description, not an independent benchmark or a promise that every game will perform a particular way.
Valve’s Steam Machine page provides device and program context. A Machine rating is about the game’s experience on that SteamOS PC, not a blanket extension of its Deck rating.

Steam Frame
Steam Frame can stream games from a PC and can also run some games on the headset itself. These are distinct play modes. Steam Frame Standalone Verified addresses games running on the headset without streaming from another device.
Valve says the standalone criteria include good performance at default graphics settings, legible text and interface elements on the built-in display, and a working default Steam Frame controller setup. How to interpret a rating before you play
Read the device and play mode first, then consider how much setup the rating implies. For Steam Deck, Verified is the clearest signal of an out-of-box fit; Playable warns that adjustments may be needed. Unknown means there is no Valve check to rely on, while Unsupported means Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Deck.

For Steam Frame, distinguish standalone play from PC streaming. A Standalone Verified label concerns the former; it does not by itself describe the streaming experience. For Steam Machine, use a Machine-specific rating rather than assuming a Deck result transfers to a different device.

What SteamOS means in this context
SteamOS is the operating system used across Valve’s SteamOS hardware, including Steam Deck and Steam Machine. Proton helps run Windows games on Linux-based SteamOS systems. Compatibility depends on more than the operating system alone: input, display and interface behavior, launchers, and middleware such as anti-cheat can all affect whether a game provides a smooth experience on a device.
