In quantum physics, a phase is stable only relative to specified changes. A useful shorthand is: the phase keeps the feature that defines it when the allowed perturbations are applied. Those perturbations might be weak and local, required to preserve a symmetry, static or time-dependent, or applied to a closed system versus an open one coupled to an environment. Change those conditions and the stability claim can change.
For many gapped equilibrium phases, stability means that the state cannot be smoothly deformed into a different phase without closing the bulk energy gap or, for a symmetry-protected phase, breaking the protecting symmetry. Topological order uses a different test based on robust ground-state structure. Gapless critical phases and open-system steady states require their own criteria rather than a simple bulk-gap argument.
Stability is a conditional statement, not a guarantee of immortality
When physicists call a quantum phase stable, they are not saying that no force can ever change it. They are specifying a class of changes under which the phase’s defining properties survive. A perturbation can be small in strength but still decisive if it violates a required symmetry, acts globally rather than locally, changes the system’s dynamics, or is taken through a phase transition.

Without these qualifications, “stable” is too vague to distinguish a meaningful phase from a temporary feature of one Hamiltonian or one finite-size experiment.
Why a bulk gap is central for many equilibrium phases
In a gapped equilibrium phase, the lowest excited state is separated from the ground state by a nonzero bulk energy gap. That separation gives the phase room to tolerate sufficiently gentle changes. If the Hamiltonian is varied continuously and the bulk gap remains open throughout the path, the state can generally be followed adiabatically: it evolves without encountering the singular rearrangement associated with a phase transition.
This leads to a practical definition used in many classifications. Two gapped states belong to the same phase when one can be connected to the other by a smooth path of allowed Hamiltonians that keeps the bulk gap open. If every such path fails because the gap must close, the states represent distinct phases under those rules.

A closing gap is a warning that the existing phase description may no longer apply. At the closing point, excitations can become arbitrarily cheap in the idealized thermodynamic limit, and the system can reorganize its long-distance properties. The gap may reopen on the other side, but the resulting phase can have a different topological classification or symmetry realization.
Gap protection is not an absolute shield. A sufficiently strong perturbation can drive a transition, and a perturbation that changes the symmetry constraints can invalidate a classification even when the perturbation is weak. The statement is specifically that modest changes within the stated class do not alter the phase.

Adiabatic continuity and its limits
The adiabatic picture is most useful for isolated, gapped equilibrium systems. It does not by itself define stability for a critical system whose gap vanishes with size, nor for a driven or dissipative system whose relevant object is a long-time state rather than an equilibrium ground state. Those cases need separate diagnostics.
Symmetry-protected topological phases: robust only while the symmetry is kept
A symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase has a gapped bulk and can support nontrivial boundary or surface states. The boundary behavior is not protected by topology alone; it is protected by a specified global symmetry, such as a symmetry represented in the model’s classification. The exact symmetry must be named before a stability claim is meaningful.

Senthil’s 2015 review, Symmetry-Protected Topological Phases of Quantum Matter, describes the subject as “the interplay between interactions, symmetry, and topology in states of quantum matter.” That interplay is the key qualification: interactions and perturbations may be allowed, but the symmetry used to define the phase must remain intact.
How to test an SPT claim
- Identify the protecting symmetry or symmetry group used in the model.
- Check that the bulk remains gapped along the proposed deformation.
- Restrict the perturbations to those that preserve the symmetry.
- Ask whether the boundary states or other diagnostic features remain distinct from those of a trivial phase.
If a boundary perturbation breaks the protecting symmetry, it can remove or gap the boundary mode without requiring the bulk to undergo the same protected transition. That does not contradict the original stability claim; it violates one of its conditions. Saying that an SPT edge is “immune to disorder” or “protected against any perturbation” is therefore inaccurate unless the disorder is also known to preserve the relevant symmetry and satisfy the locality assumptions of the classification.
Intrinsic topological order: a different kind of robustness
Intrinsic topological order is not defined by a protecting symmetry. Its stability question concerns global quantum structure that cannot be removed by adding weak local changes. A standard diagnostic is whether characteristic ground-state properties, including topological ground-state degeneracy, persist under such perturbations.

Topological ground-state degeneracy means that, in an appropriate geometry, several ground states remain indistinguishable by local measurements in the ideal limit but are distinguished by global information. Weak local terms may split this degeneracy slightly in a finite system, yet the defining structure can remain intact as system size grows and as long as the perturbation does not drive a phase transition.
Why this is not the same as an SPT edge mode
An SPT phase can have a short-range-entangled bulk whose notable boundary states depend on symmetry. Intrinsic topological order involves long-range-entangled bulk structure and does not require a protecting symmetry for its basic distinction. A robust edge mode is therefore not, by itself, evidence of intrinsic topological order, and persistence of topological ground-state degeneracy is not the same test as persistence of a symmetry-protected boundary state.
When evaluating a claim about topological order, ask whether the evidence concerns global ground-state structure and local-perturbation stability, rather than merely a boundary signal.
Gapless critical phases need size-dependent stability tests
A gapless phase has no nonzero bulk gap in the thermodynamic limit, so the usual rule “the gap stays open” cannot be applied literally. Critical systems often have excitations whose energy decreases as the sample grows. Stability must instead be phrased through scaling laws, allowed perturbations, and the fate of the critical behavior.
A 2026 Physics Reports review on topological physics in quantum critical systems discusses one type of boundary-mode test: compare how quickly the edge-mode splitting decreases with system size against how the bulk finite-size gap decreases. If the edge splitting becomes parametrically smaller in the relevant limit, the boundary feature can remain meaningfully separated from bulk finite-size effects. This is a criterion for a class of critical systems, not a universal replacement for the gapped-phase definition.

Finite samples can obscure the distinction
In a laboratory or numerical calculation, every sample has a finite-size level spacing. A system may therefore look weakly gapped even when its infinite-size phase is critical. Conversely, an apparent edge mode can be a finite-size effect if its splitting does not fall away fast enough compared with the bulk scale. Stability claims for gapless matter should report the size dependence of both quantities rather than quote a single finite-system gap.
Open quantum systems: stability of steady states and dynamics
An open quantum system exchanges energy, particles, or information with an environment. Its long-time behavior is described by dynamics—often a dissipative evolution—and the object of interest may be a steady state rather than an equilibrium ground state. Heating, cooling, measurement, and engineered loss can all change the relevant notion of phase.
A 2024 Physical Review X paper, published November 4, 2024, proposes a criterion called uniformity for stable phases of open quantum systems. Informally, under sufficiently small local perturbations of the dynamics, the unperturbed and perturbed steady states should be related by a finite-time dissipative evolution. The proposal asks whether the change in steady state is controlled by a physically local, finite-time process rather than by a qualitatively new long-range rearrangement.
Uniformity is a proposal for this open-system setting, not a universal definition of stability for all quantum phases. It should not be substituted for the equilibrium bulk-gap criterion, and it does not imply that every driven system has a stable phase. One must specify the dynamics, the steady state being compared, the locality assumptions, and what counts as a sufficiently small perturbation.

- Name the phase regime. State whether the system is gapped and in equilibrium, gapless and critical, or open and dynamically maintained.
- Identify the diagnostic. Is the claim about a bulk gap, an invariant, a boundary mode, ground-state degeneracy, correlation behavior, or a steady-state property?
- Define the perturbations. Record their strength, locality, time dependence, and whether they preserve the symmetries used in the classification.
- Choose the correct limit. Distinguish finite-size behavior from thermodynamic scaling. For critical systems, track the relevant size-dependent energies rather than assuming a fixed bulk gap.
- Check for a transition. In a gapped equilibrium path, determine whether the bulk gap closes. In other settings, use the regime-specific diagnostic instead.
- Separate bulk and boundary evidence. A boundary response can disappear when its protecting symmetry is broken even though the bulk remains otherwise well behaved.
- State the scope of the conclusion. Report exactly which class of perturbations leaves the feature intact and which changes fall outside the claim.
| Regime | What stability asks | Typical failure or transition signal |
|---|---|---|
| Gapped equilibrium | Can the state be smoothly deformed within the allowed class while the bulk gap stays open? | Bulk-gap closing or a perturbation outside the assumed symmetry or locality class |
| Symmetry-protected topological | Do the protected distinctions survive gapped, symmetry-preserving deformations? | Breaking the protecting symmetry or closing the bulk gap |
| Intrinsic topological order | Does characteristic global ground-state structure survive weak local perturbations? | Loss of topological structure, usually through a phase transition or sufficiently strong perturbation |
| Gapless critical | Do critical and boundary signatures obey the required finite-size scaling? | Scaling changes, relevant perturbations, or edge splitting that is not separated from bulk finite-size energies |
| Open-system steady state | Does a small local change in dynamics produce a controlled, finite-time dissipative change of steady state? | Failure of the proposed uniformity relation or a change in the dynamical phase |
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Stable” means impossible to change
Correction: Replace the absolute statement with the perturbation class and the diagnostic. A phase can be stable to weak local, symmetry-preserving terms yet change under a strong or symmetry-breaking term.
Every topological boundary mode is protected against everything
Correction: Name the protecting symmetry. If the perturbation breaks it, the boundary protection no longer applies.
SPT and intrinsic topological order are interchangeable
Correction: Check whether the evidence concerns symmetry-dependent boundary states or symmetry-independent, globally organized ground-state structure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The gapped argument works for every phase
Correction: Gapless critical systems require finite-size scaling, while open systems require a dynamical steady-state criterion. A bulk-gap test alone cannot settle either case.
A finite numerical gap proves a gapped phase
Correction: Examine how the lowest energies scale with system size. Critical systems can display finite-size level spacings that vanish in the thermodynamic limit.
What a precise stability statement looks like
A defensible statement names all of its conditions: “This gapped phase remains in the same class under sufficiently weak, local, symmetry-preserving deformations for which the bulk gap does not close.” For intrinsic topological order, the statement would instead refer to the persistence of characteristic ground-state structure under weak local perturbations. For a critical phase, it would identify the scaling relation being tested. For an open system, it would specify the dynamical comparison and whether a criterion such as uniformity is being invoked.
The central lesson is methodological. Before asking whether a quantum phase is stable, first ask stable against what, in which regime, and according to which observable or structural property? Once those choices are explicit, “stability” becomes a testable physical claim rather than an unconditional label.
