6G does not have a globally assigned spectrum plan yet. As of 13 October 2026, the most concrete candidate ranges being studied for possible terrestrial IMT (6G/IMT-2030) use are 4.4–4.8 GHz, 7.125–8.4 GHz (or portions of that range), and 14.8–15.35 GHz. They are study bands, not frequencies already awarded to 6G. Existing bands identified for IMT are also expected to remain part of the IMT-2030 spectrum mix.
The short answer: three candidate ranges, but no final 6G assignment
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is studying additional spectrum for possible terrestrial IMT use under World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27) agenda item 1.7. The ranges named in that agenda are:
- 4.4–4.8 GHz
- 7.125–8.4 GHz, or parts of it
- 14.8–15.35 GHz
WRC-27 has not allocated these frequencies to 6G. Governments and technical organizations must first study sharing and compatibility with services that already operate in, or next to, those bands. The eventual result could differ by ITU region and by country.

6G is the common name for the next generation of International Mobile Telecommunications, which the ITU calls IMT-2030. Existing IMT-identified low-, mid- and higher-frequency bands remain relevant to IMT-2030; 6G is not required to start with an entirely new set of frequencies.

What “spectrum allocation” actually means
“Allocated,” “identified for IMT,” “standardized,” and “licensed” describe different stages. Treating them as synonyms is the source of many misleading 6G band lists.
1. International allocation in the Radio Regulations
The ITU Radio Regulations are the binding international treaty framework for sharing radio frequencies among services such as mobile, satellite, fixed links, broadcasting, aviation and scientific systems. The ITU describes the regulations as “the foundation of international frequency management.” World Radiocommunication Conferences revise those rules through negotiations among national administrations.
An allocation in the Radio Regulations specifies which radio services may use a frequency range and under what international conditions. It does not automatically give a mobile operator permission to build a network.
2. Identification for IMT
After technical studies and a WRC decision, a band may be identified for IMT. That status signals that the band can support international mobile broadband use under defined conditions. It still does not require every country to use the band, and it does not guarantee that the entire range will be available everywhere.
3. Radio-interface standards
Standards bodies define how a 6G radio interface could operate: channel bandwidths, duplexing, antenna behavior, emission limits, test methods and performance requirements. Standards work does not allocate spectrum or create legal access rights. A compliant device still needs a country-specific band plan and authorization to transmit.

4. National licensing and authorization
National administrations apply the international rules to local circumstances. A regulator may designate a band for mobile service, set power and coordination conditions, reserve spectrum for public or scientific users, and issue licenses or other authorizations to operators. Some countries may auction frequencies; others may use administrative assignments, shared-access licenses or local licenses. Incumbent users and cross-border coordination can narrow the usable portion.
The practical chain is therefore: technical and compatibility studies, WRC negotiations, international rules, national implementation, and finally an operator or network authorization.

| Range | Status as of October 2026 | What can reasonably be inferred |
|---|---|---|
| 4.4–4.8 GHz | Under WRC-27 agenda item 1.7 study for possible terrestrial IMT use | A mid-band candidate whose availability depends on sharing studies, regional scope and national incumbent use. |
| 7.125–8.4 GHz, or parts thereof | Under study for possible terrestrial IMT use | The phrase “or parts thereof” is important: the whole 1.275 GHz span is not presumed to become a single 6G block. |
| 14.8–15.35 GHz | Under study for possible terrestrial IMT use | A higher-frequency candidate requiring detailed work on propagation, deployment, interference and protection of existing services. |
| Existing IMT-identified bands | Already identified for IMT and still relevant to IMT-2030 | Future 6G networks can combine new bands with current mobile spectrum rather than replacing earlier allocations. |
Agenda item 1.7 asks for sharing and compatibility studies and for technical conditions that account for services in candidate and adjacent bands. Until those studies and negotiations finish, a table of “official 6G bands” would overstate what has been decided.
Why these ranges are being considered
4.4–4.8 GHz: a mid-band compromise
Frequencies in the mid-band region are generally considered useful where operators need more capacity than low bands can provide without moving to very high frequencies. Compared with higher bands, propagation can be more manageable for broad outdoor coverage, while channels can be wider than in many traditional low-band assignments. Those are engineering tendencies, not a promise about a future 6G network. Actual range, power, antenna configuration and channel sizes would be set by technical conditions and national rules.
The 4.4–4.8 GHz proposal must be evaluated against existing users and adjacent-band services. A country could support only part of the range, impose geographic restrictions, or defer mobile use if incumbent protection cannot be achieved.

7.125–8.4 GHz: a broad range with a qualification
This candidate span is much wider on paper than a typical individual mobile block, but the agenda explicitly allows “parts thereof.” Different sub-ranges may have different incumbents, sharing constraints or regional support. The eventual outcome could be one or more separated blocks rather than a contiguous nationwide allocation.
At these frequencies, planners must examine propagation, building penetration, antenna beam behavior, satellite and fixed-service operations, and the practicality of coordinating dense networks. Equipment makers also need enough commonality across markets to justify a large device ecosystem.
14.8–15.35 GHz: higher-frequency capacity potential
The 14.8–15.35 GHz range is a higher-frequency candidate. Higher frequencies can make larger contiguous channels technically conceivable, but they generally require closer attention to propagation, blockage, antenna placement and network density. Those characteristics may suit targeted high-capacity zones better than blanket rural coverage, although no final deployment model has been selected.
Sharing studies are especially important because existing services in the band and nearby frequencies must be protected. A favorable international decision would still leave national regulators to determine where and how the band can be used.
How the international decision is made
- Agenda setting: WRC-27 agenda item 1.7 defines the candidate ranges and calls for studies rather than awarding them to IMT.
- Technical studies: ITU-R working parties, administrations and stakeholders model interference, propagation, antenna characteristics, protection criteria and feasible channel arrangements.
- Compatibility assessment: Analysts test whether terrestrial IMT could share with, or operate next to, incumbent services without unacceptable interference. Results may support full-band use, geographic separation, power limits, indoor-only operation, time sharing or exclusion of portions.
- Regional coordination: ITU regions may support different portions or conditions. Proposals shown in a regional presentation are snapshots of study scope, not final worldwide allocations.
- WRC negotiation: National administrations negotiate text changes to the Radio Regulations. The outcome can identify a band for IMT, retain existing allocations, add footnotes with regional conditions, or make no change.
- Domestic implementation: Each regulator converts the international result into a national table of allocations, band plan, licensing framework and technical rules.
- Network authorization: Operators receive licenses or other permissions for specific frequencies, locations, power levels and obligations. A license may cover only a portion of an internationally identified range.
This sequence explains why a standards announcement, a conference agenda and a carrier license can all mention the same frequency while referring to different legal and technical facts.

Where 6G standards work fits
The ITU approved the IMT-2030 framework in 2023. In February 2026, ITU-R Working Party 5D completed draft minimum technical performance requirements. In June 2026, it completed draft guidelines for evaluating candidate radio-interface technologies. The ITU said those drafts were submitted to Study Group 5 for approval in December 2026.
Candidate radio-interface submissions are invited during the February 2027–February 2029 period. These milestones establish how proposed technologies will be evaluated; they do not decide which frequencies WRC-27 will place in the Radio Regulations.
The IMT-2030 framework includes scenarios such as immersive communication, ubiquitous connectivity, artificial intelligence and communications, and integrated sensing and communications. They are intended capabilities and evaluation scenarios, not proof that a particular consumer service, device or performance level is already deployed. The ITU also cautions that minimum draft requirements are not guarantees of real-world results.
How to compare candidate bands without overpromising
| Decision factor | Question for planners | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage versus capacity | How much area must one site cover, and how much throughput is needed? | Lower frequencies generally travel farther and penetrate obstacles better; higher frequencies can support wider channels but may need denser sites. These are general tendencies, not guaranteed 6G performance. |
| Contiguous bandwidth | Can a regulator make a usable, contiguous block, or only separated portions? | Channel width and fragmentation affect radio design, peak capacity and device complexity. |
| Incumbent coexistence | Which services already occupy the band or adjacent frequencies? | Protection limits may require power caps, exclusion zones, coordination databases, indoor use or a smaller mobile segment. |
| Regional harmonization | Will the same range be available in multiple ITU regions? | Common bands can support larger equipment volumes and roaming, while regional differences may produce fragmented devices and higher costs. |
| National availability | Has the local regulator completed its allocation and licensing process? | An internationally identified band remains unusable by a carrier until domestic rules and authorization are in place. |
No official final ranking says that one of these candidates is “the best” 6G band. The useful question is which combination of bands and conditions meets a country’s coverage, capacity, incumbent-protection and harmonization goals.
Regional and national differences to expect
A 2024 ITU seminar presentation showed differing regional scope for candidate ranges, including 4.4–4.8 GHz presented for Regions 1 and 3 and regional notes for portions of 7.125–8.4 GHz. Such material illustrates that proposals can vary by region; it is not evidence of a completed global allocation.

Even after WRC-27, countries may move at different speeds. One administration might clear incumbents and license a nationwide mobile block, while another might preserve existing users or permit only local shared access. Border coordination can further limit frequencies near neighboring countries. Device support therefore depends on both the international outcome and the markets a manufacturer targets.
What this means for readers and businesses
- Consumers: A phone marketed as “6G-ready” cannot guarantee access to a future band unless the relevant national plan, device certification and operator deployment exist.
- Enterprises: A future private network may use existing IMT spectrum, newly licensed local spectrum or shared arrangements, depending on national regulation.
- Network planners: Design decisions should track regulator consultations, incumbent-protection rules and channelization proposals rather than relying on a single global band list.
- Equipment developers: The useful target is a combination of internationally harmonized ranges and flexible radios that can accommodate regional sub-bands.
- Policy watchers: A WRC agenda item signals work to be done. It is not an allocation, an auction result, a rollout commitment or a date when commercial 6G service will begin.
Common mistakes when reading 6G spectrum news
Mistake: calling candidate bands “allocated 6G spectrum”
Correct interpretation: 4.4–4.8 GHz, 7.125–8.4 GHz or parts, and 14.8–15.35 GHz are being studied for possible terrestrial IMT use under WRC-27 item 1.7.
Mistake: assuming every country gets the same frequencies
Correct interpretation: ITU rules provide an international framework, while national administrations decide domestic use, licensing and local protection conditions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Mistake: assuming standards create transmission rights
Correct interpretation: a radio-interface standard describes technology; only the applicable national authorization permits a network to transmit.
Mistake: assuming 6G replaces all earlier mobile bands
Correct interpretation: existing IMT-identified bands remain relevant to IMT-2030 and can operate alongside any new spectrum that is eventually made available.
What to watch next
The next meaningful checkpoints are approval of the draft IMT-2030 performance and evaluation documents, the February 2027–February 2029 window for candidate radio-interface submissions, the technical studies leading into WRC-27, the conference’s final changes to the Radio Regulations, and each country’s subsequent consultation and licensing decisions. The status can change as those steps occur, so any band claim should be dated and tied to the relevant ITU or national regulator document.
