Spatial audio in earbuds is an umbrella term for making sound seem wider, more surrounding, or three-dimensional. It can be a fixed effect that stays centered while you move, or it can add head tracking so the apparent sound position changes as your head turns. The label alone does not tell you which mode you are getting.

Whether it works depends on the exact phone, operating-system implementation, earbud model, app, audio title, settings, and sometimes your country or subscription plan. There is no universal compatibility list, so verify the complete combination rather than relying on an “spatial” badge on a box.

What spatial audio actually means

Spatial audio describes an intended listening result: voices, instruments, or effects appear to occupy positions around you instead of coming only from a left and right channel. A compatible source may contain multichannel or immersive audio that is rendered for headphones. A phone or app can also process ordinary content to simulate positions in a larger sound field.

The term is not a single technical standard. Dolby notes that “spatial audio” and “spatial sound” are used broadly, including for stereo and surround presentations. One product may use the label for software virtualization, while another may refer to an immersive mix or a head-tracked mode. Check the named mode and supported format, not just the marketing term.

Fixed spatial audio

Fixed, or static, spatial audio creates the wider presentation without changing it when you move. The center image may feel more like it is in front of you than inside your head, but turning your head does not make the sound stay anchored to a virtual point.

Dynamic spatial audio with head tracking

Dynamic spatial audio adds movement data. Sensors in compatible earbuds detect changes in head orientation, and playback recalculates the apparent direction. If a voice is positioned in front of you, turning to the side can make it seem to remain in front rather than rotate with your head.

These are separate capabilities. Android’s implementation guidance states: “Static spatial audio doesn’t require head tracking, so specific functionality isn’t required in the headset.” Head tracking therefore requires both a suitable sensor-equipped headset and phone/software support.

The compatibility stack: six things must line up

A spatial effect can fail at any layer. Check each item independently:

  1. Phone hardware and operating system: the phone must implement the relevant spatial-audio framework. An operating-system version by itself is not a guarantee.
  2. Earbuds: the exact model must support the mode you want. Fixed processing may work with more headsets than dynamic tracking, which needs motion sensors and integration.
  3. Audio route: the phone must recognize the connected earbuds as the current playback route. Wired and wireless routes can expose different capabilities.
  4. App and title: the app must send an eligible format, and the individual movie, show, song, or game must be supported. An app’s general compatibility does not mean every title qualifies.
  5. Settings: spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, or head tracking may be disabled globally, per app, or per device.
  6. Geography and plan: catalogs and Dolby Atmos availability can vary by country, region, or subscription tier.

Android’s developer guidance treats capability, route availability, enabled state, and track compatibility as separate checks. It also warns developers not to process content a second time when it is already spatialized.

iPhone and Apple Music support

Dolby Atmos playback on iPhone

Apple’s iPhone guide says available Apple Music tracks can play in Dolby Atmos, which is intended to create an immersive three-dimensional presentation over stereo headphones and compatible speakers or receivers. Eligible tracks show a Dolby icon in the Music app.

Open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos on current iOS versions, then choose the available playback behavior. The two important choices are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Automatic: the phone uses Apple’s supported-device rules to select Atmos playback.
  • Always On: the Music app attempts Dolby Atmos playback on any headphones or speakers connected to the iPhone. Apple cautions that not every speaker reproduces it as intended.

Atmos playback and head tracking are not the same claim. Always On can attempt an Atmos mix through connected headphones, but it does not turn those headphones into a head-tracked system.

AirPods head tracking and control modes

Apple documents Spatial Audio with head tracking for supported music on iPhone when used with AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max. In Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, tap the Spatial Audio control, and choose one of three modes:

  • Off: disables the spatial presentation.
  • Fixed: enables Spatial Audio without head tracking.
  • Head Tracked: enables Spatial Audio and adjusts the apparent position as you move.

Apple says the selection can persist separately for each supported app. Its AirPods guide also notes that Spatial Audio is not available for all apps or content. On Mac, supported shows, movies, and music require Apple silicon and macOS 12.3 or later.

Regional and catalog limits

Apple states that Apple Music and Dolby Atmos are not available in every country or region. Even where the service is offered, the catalog is title-specific; look for the Dolby icon and confirm that the track is the version you intend to play.

Android support and what Android 13 changes

Platform APIs are not a universal guarantee

Android 13 introduced APIs that let apps discover whether the current combination of phone implementation, connected headset, and settings supports immersive multichannel playback. The framework can support static spatial audio with wired or wireless headsets. Dynamic head tracking additionally requires a compatible sensor-equipped headset and platform support.

Manufacturers decide how those APIs are implemented on particular phones. Therefore, “Android 13 or newer” is a prerequisite for some platform features, not proof that every Android 13 phone offers the same spatial effect, menu, or head-tracking behavior.

What an Android app has to verify

Android’s developer documentation tells apps to check four conditions before presenting spatial playback:

  • Does the device support spatialization?
  • Is spatialization currently available for the active audio route?
  • Is the feature enabled in the user’s settings?
  • Can this specific audio track be spatialized?

Head tracking is queried separately. A title can therefore be eligible for static spatial audio while dynamic tracking is unavailable.

Google lists Pixel Buds 2a as supporting stereo Spatial Audio without head tracking. That distinction matters: the earbuds can present the expanded stereo effect, but they do not provide the orientation-changing behavior described for the Pro models in the Pixel documentation.

Which apps and content work?

App support is title-dependent. Google says spatial audio is most useful for movies and television and suggests trying HBO Max and Netflix Premium. Those examples do not establish that every program, account tier, phone, or region on either service supports the effect.

Apple similarly says Spatial Audio is not available for all apps or content. A service may support an immersive format in one title but deliver ordinary stereo in another. A download can also differ from a stream if the app uses a different audio track or playback path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For music, check whether the track is specifically marked for Dolby Atmos or another supported immersive format. For video, check the title’s audio options and the service’s plan requirements. If an app offers no spatial-audio indicator or control, the phone may be receiving ordinary stereo even though the earbuds themselves are capable.

How to set up and test spatial audio

iPhone with Apple Music and compatible AirPods

  1. Update iOS, the Music app, and the earbuds’ firmware as far as your devices support.
  2. Connect the AirPods and confirm they are the active output in Control Center.
  3. For Atmos music, open Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and choose Automatic or Always On.
  4. Play a track that displays the Dolby icon in Apple Music.
  5. Open Control Center, touch and hold the volume control, tap Spatial Audio, and select Fixed or Head Tracked.
  6. Move your head slowly while listening to a stable vocal or dialogue element. In Head Tracked mode, the apparent position should change relative to your head; Fixed mode should not.

If the Dolby icon is missing, troubleshoot the title, catalog, region, or account before blaming the earbuds. If Fixed works but Head Tracked does not appear, check the exact AirPods model and iPhone pairing.

Android and Pixel phones

  1. Install current phone, Google Play system, earbuds, and streaming-app updates.
  2. Pair the exact earbuds and confirm they are selected under the phone’s connected-device or media-output controls.
  3. Open the phone’s sound settings and the earbuds’ companion settings. Enable Spatial Audio and, where offered, head tracking.
  4. Use a supported movie, show, or song. Google’s documented examples include Netflix Premium and HBO Max, but title and region support still vary.
  5. Start playback, open the app’s audio or playback information, and verify that an immersive or spatial format is active.
  6. Test first with dialogue or a centered instrument, then turn your head. A wider sound without a changing anchor indicates static spatial audio; a changing anchor indicates head tracking.

On non-Pixel Android phones, menu names and supported modes can differ because the manufacturer controls the platform implementation. If the app reports that the route cannot be spatialized, reconnect the earbuds and check the phone’s output route before changing content settings.

Common reasons it does not work

The earbuds say “spatial,” but no effect is audible

The label may describe a fixed processor, a manufacturer-specific mode, or a feature that needs a particular app format. Confirm the exact model, turn the mode on, and test a known eligible title rather than ordinary stereo music.

Head tracking is missing

Fixed spatial audio does not require sensors, but dynamic tracking does. Check the earbud model, phone pairing, firmware, and whether the phone manufacturer supports tracking for that combination. An Android phone can support static spatialization while reporting no head-tracking capability.

The app works, but one title does not

Spatial support is often attached to the individual audio track. Check the title’s audio badge, language or soundtrack selection, download-versus-stream behavior, and subscription tier. A service-level claim is not a title-level guarantee.

It worked before an update or device change

Recheck the active route and per-app setting. Apple says Spatial Audio selections can persist per app, while Android availability is evaluated for the current route and settings. Re-pairing the earbuds and reopening the app can force a fresh capability check.

The sound seems processed twice

Android cautions developers against applying spatial processing to content that is already spatialized. Disable one of the competing effects—such as an app’s virtualizer or a phone-wide enhancement—and compare the result with the source’s native mode.

A practical compatibility checklist

  • Write down the exact phone model and operating-system version.
  • Write down the exact earbud model, not just the product family.
  • Decide whether you need fixed spatial audio or head tracking.
  • Confirm that the phone, earbuds, and current route support that mode together.
  • Check the app, title, audio format, subscription plan, and country availability.
  • Enable the feature in the correct global, per-app, or device menu.
  • Test with a clearly marked supported title and compare Off, Fixed, and Head Tracked where those controls exist.

This process prevents the most common mistake: treating “spatial audio” as one universal feature. The useful question is not whether a phone or earbud is branded spatial, but whether your exact phone, earbuds, app, title, settings, and region form a supported playback chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Bluetooth automatically support spatial audio?

No. Bluetooth only describes the connection. Spatial playback still depends on the phone’s implementation, the earbud model, the active route, software settings, and compatible content.

Can fixed spatial audio work without motion sensors in the earbuds?

Yes. Static spatial audio does not require head tracking or dedicated sensors; sensors are needed for the dynamic mode that responds to head movement.

Why can the same earbuds work differently on two Android phones?

Android manufacturers implement the platform APIs and controls differently. Capability is evaluated for the specific phone, route, settings, headset, and track, so an Android version number alone cannot predict identical behavior.
