Laser engravers use software that prepares artwork, assigns cutting or engraving parameters, previews the toolpath, and either controls the machine or exports a job file that its controller understands. The right choice depends first on the laser’s model and controller, then on whether you need drawing tools, image processing, or only machine control.

A typical job starts as vector artwork or a bitmap image. The laser application imports it, checks dimensions and fonts, maps artwork to processing layers, applies machine- and material-specific settings, previews the path, and sends controller-specific instructions. A design file is not automatically a machine-ready file, and the same SVG or DXF can behave differently in different software.

What laser-engraver software actually does

“Laser software” can mean one application or a combination of programs. In an integrated workflow, one application handles layout, artwork import, processing settings, preview, and device control. In a separated workflow, a vector or image editor creates the artwork and a laser application prepares it for a particular machine.

LightBurn’s documentation describes the integrated model: you can draw or import artwork, organize it into layers, assign operations such as engraving or cutting, preview the result, frame the job, and save output in a format determined by the controller. xTool Studio documents a manufacturer-specific workflow with design tools, vector and image import, device settings, processing parameters, path preview, and job controls.

The complete path from artwork to an engraving

1. Create or obtain the artwork

Start with the kind of artwork you want to produce. Logos, lettering, diagrams and line drawings are normally created as vector paths in the laser application itself or in a separate vector editor such as Inkscape, Illustrator or a CAD program. Vectors describe lines, curves and shapes mathematically, so they can be scaled without the pixelation associated with a bitmap.

Photographs and other pixel-based designs begin in image-editing software or as camera files. The laser application then converts the image into an engraving process. xTool’s documentation specifically describes an imported PNG as bitmap engraving. The application may apply a selected dithering or grayscale treatment, but the available controls depend on that application and machine.

2. Export a format the receiving application supports

Export using a format documented for the target program. LightBurn’s artwork documentation lists SVG, DXF, PDF, AI and PLT/HPGL among vector or mixed formats, and PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF among image formats. xTool Studio documentation lists SVG and DXF vector imports and several common image formats. These lists are not a universal compatibility guarantee; a file accepted by one version or controller may be rejected by another.

Artwork type Common exchange formats documented by the software What to verify
Vector or mixed artwork SVG, DXF, PDF, AI, PLT/HPGL in LightBurn documentation; SVG and DXF in xTool Studio documentation Units, scale, path closure, fills, strokes and whether the receiving version supports the format
Bitmap or photographic artwork PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF and TIFF are listed in LightBurn documentation; xTool Studio lists several image formats including PNG Pixel dimensions, image-processing mode, orientation and whether transparent areas are interpreted as expected
Native project or machine job Software-specific project files and controller-specific machine-ready output Do not assume a project file can be opened by another application or sent directly to a different controller

3. Check text, scale and document units before processing

Text is a frequent source of surprises. LightBurn states in its documentation: “LightBurn is not able to import embedded fonts.” If the font is not installed on the computer doing the import, text can disappear or be substituted. The reliable cross-system method is to convert lettering to paths or outlines in the authoring application before exporting. xTool also advises converting SVG text to paths.

Inspect the dimensions immediately after import rather than trusting the appearance on screen. SVG exports and imports can use different DPI assumptions; xTool’s vector-import guidance notes that the DPI setting affects displayed size. If the result is too large or too small, compare the export and import DPI settings and then verify a known dimension in the laser application.

DXF files carry units differently depending on the authoring and receiving programs. Check the drawing’s unit metadata and the receiving application’s unit or auto-detection setting. A metric drawing interpreted as inches, or vice versa, can produce a dramatically wrong job even though every path is present.

4. Assign an operation and processing parameters

Imported artwork still needs instructions. In LightBurn, layers can receive different settings, allowing one layer to engrave and another to cut. xTool Studio exposes processing parameters such as power and speed in its settings panel. The software uses those assignments to determine how each selected object is processed.

Power and speed are not universal presets. They depend on the laser’s type and rating, the material, its thickness and finish, the lens or focus condition, and the desired result. The documented workflows do not establish a safe setting for any particular machine-and-material combination. Use the machine manufacturer’s guidance and validate settings on a controlled piece of the same material before committing an important workpiece.

5. Preview, frame and run the job

Preview the processing path before starting. Look for missing objects, unexpected fills, duplicate lines, incorrect layer order, text substitutions and dimensions that changed during import. xTool Studio describes a path preview and pre-processing check; LightBurn documents preview, framing and job controls.

Framing moves the machine around the job boundary without performing the process, so you can check placement on the material. Confirm that the artwork is inside the usable area, the material is positioned correctly and no object extends beyond the intended boundary. Start the job only after the preview and physical placement agree.

6. Distinguish a design file from a machine job file

A design or project file preserves editable artwork and settings for the application. A machine-ready file contains instructions in the language expected by a particular controller. LightBurn documents saving machine-ready output in a format that varies by controller. Consequently, sending an exported job made for one controller to another machine is not a safe interchange method, even when the visible artwork is identical.

How vector and raster files become laser instructions

Vector paths

For vector artwork, the application interprets lines, curves and enclosed shapes as paths. Layer or object settings determine whether those paths are treated as outlines, filled engraving regions or cuts. The software orders the resulting operations and converts them into controller-specific movement and laser instructions.

Vectors are useful for signs, logos, lettering and technical drawings because their geometry remains precise when resized. They can still fail to process correctly if paths are malformed, if fills and strokes are interpreted differently than expected, or if units were misread during import.

Raster images

A raster file is a grid of pixels rather than a collection of paths. The laser application reads the image as an engraving operation and generates a scan pattern or other image-processing path. Resolution, contrast, transparency and the selected image mode affect the result. A PNG therefore follows a different processing route from an SVG outline, even if both depict the same logo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raster engraving is appropriate for photographs, shaded artwork and images that do not need vector cutting geometry. If you need a clean cut contour around a photograph, create or import a separate vector outline as well as the bitmap.

Choosing a software setup

Workflow Best fit Advantages Checks before committing
Integrated laser application Users who want drawing, import, layers, preview and machine control in one place Fewer hand-offs; settings and artwork can remain together; controller-specific output is handled in the same workflow Exact laser and controller support, license or edition requirements, supported import formats and current version compatibility
Manufacturer software Owners of a machine ecosystem with documented first-party software Device settings and job controls are designed around that manufacturer’s hardware Whether your model and installed version support the required vector and image formats, plus any feature differences between models
Separate design editor plus laser software Users who need advanced illustration, typography, photo editing or CAD tools Specialized artwork tools can be used while the laser application handles machine preparation Export format, font handling, SVG DPI, DXF units, layer preservation and whether the laser application can control the device or only create a job file

LightBurn is a candidate when its current compatibility information lists your exact machine or controller. xTool Studio is intended for workflows supported by the xTool device ecosystem. A separate editor is sensible when the design work is more demanding than the laser application’s built-in tools, but it adds an import-and-verification step.

Import checks that prevent most failed jobs

  • Keep an editable master: Save the original vector or image project separately from the laser application’s project and exported job.
  • Convert production text to paths: Do this when the receiving computer may not have the same fonts, or when the software does not import embedded fonts.
  • Confirm one known dimension: Measure a rectangle or reference line after import and correct SVG DPI or DXF units before arranging the full job.
  • Inspect layers and duplicates: Duplicate paths can cause repeated engraving or cutting. Make sure each object is assigned to the intended operation.
  • Check image behavior: Verify orientation, transparency, contrast and the selected bitmap-processing mode before engraving a photograph.
  • Preview and frame: Use both the on-screen path preview and the machine’s framing or boundary function before starting.

Troubleshooting common import failures

Text disappears or changes typeface

The receiving computer may not have the source font, or embedded fonts may not be supported. Install the required font where permitted, or return to the authoring application and convert the text to paths. Converting to paths also makes the lettering independent of later font substitutions, although it removes ordinary text editing.

The SVG is the wrong size

Compare the export DPI with the import DPI setting and verify a measured dimension in the laser application. Do not scale by eye if the job contains fitted parts or hardware clearances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The DXF is much too large or too small

Check whether the drawing was authored in millimeters, centimeters or inches and how the receiving software detected those units. Select the correct unit explicitly when auto-detection is unavailable or produces the wrong result.

A complex SVG imports slowly or fails

xTool’s troubleshooting guidance recommends simplifying the SVG, exporting only the selected elements, or converting it to a plain SVG. Remove unnecessary effects, hidden objects and excessive node detail, then import the simplified file and verify the result against the original.

The format is rejected

Support is software- and version-specific. Check whether you are importing artwork into the correct command rather than trying to open a native project file as if it were an interchange format. If the format is unsupported, export a documented alternative such as SVG or DXF for vectors, or a documented bitmap format for images.

A practical decision process before your first job

  1. Record the laser’s exact model, controller and installed software version.
  2. Decide whether your source is vector artwork, a bitmap image or both.
  3. Choose an integrated application, manufacturer software or a separate editor plus controller workflow that explicitly supports that hardware.
  4. Export in a documented format and preserve the original editable file.
  5. Import a small test design first; check fonts, dimensions, units, layers and image interpretation.
  6. Assign machine- and material-specific processing parameters using the manufacturer’s guidance and a controlled material test.
  7. Preview the toolpath, frame the job on the material and verify the machine-ready output before running the final piece.

The key distinction is simple: artwork describes what you want to make, while laser software translates that artwork into operations and controller instructions. Once compatibility, fonts, units, processing settings and the preview have all been checked, the file can move from a design on screen to a predictable engraving on the machine.
