Social media platforms can collect more than what you post. Depending on the service, your settings, region, and device permissions, they may record what you watch, search for, click, and do in the app; receive information from other people or partners; and use technical or location signals. Those details can help rank feeds and recommendations, personalize ads, and operate or protect the service. The exact data and controls differ by platform.
What counts as your social media activity?
Activity can include public posts, but it also includes actions that are less visible to other users: what content you view or engage with, which features you use, what accounts you interact with, and how often or how long you use a service. Meta’s U.S. Regional Privacy Notice describes these categories for its products, while TikTok’s U.S. policy describes interactions with content, ads, and other users, as well as duration and frequency of use.
Platforms may also process technical details such as device or cookie identifiers, log information, and links you interact with. Depending on the service and circumstances, information may come from other users, advertisers, or business partners—not only from actions you take directly. This does not mean every platform collects the same information about every person.

For example, Meta says it may receive information about you that other people provide, including through shared content, communications, or imported contacts. X describes data from advertisers and other partners, including identifiers and information about activity on partner websites or apps. Read the Meta United States Regional Privacy Notice and X Privacy Policy for their stated practices.

Meta: Facebook and Instagram activity
Meta’s notice describes activity across its products, including content you view or engage with, features you use, actions you take, and people or accounts you interact with. It also describes information other people provide about you. The listed practices and controls can vary by product and region; consult the U.S. Regional Privacy Notice for the U.S. notice’s details.
TikTok: watching, interactions, and optional features
TikTok’s U.S. policy covers interactions with content and ads, how long and how often the service is used, and engagement with other users. It separately describes information associated with particular features or choices: contacts when you choose to sync them, purchase or transaction information when you use shopping or payment features, and possible precise location depending on settings. Its stated collection therefore is not the same for every user. TikTok also says it may draw conclusions about attributes such as age, gender, or interests. See its U.S. Privacy Policy.

X: partner signals and inferred interests
X describes information from service use as well as partner data and technical signals. Its examples of inferences include likely interests, age, and language, which it says can support personalized content and advertising. These are platform-generated estimates, not proof that a characteristic is true. X explains its processing in Additional information about data processing and its Privacy Policy.
Google and YouTube: activity tied to account settings
Google says activity in its services can inform features such as YouTube video recommendations. Searches and other activity may be saved to a Google Account depending on settings. Google also describes location as useful for location-based services, with collection and retention affected in part by device and account settings. Its Privacy Policy and Safety Center page on ads that respect your privacy explain these uses.

How platforms use activity and what they infer
Activity signals can help platforms decide which posts, videos, or recommendations to show; personalize advertising; and run or protect their services. A platform may combine many signals rather than rely on a single view, click, or search. Google, for example, says activity can inform YouTube recommendations. X describes using inferred topics and characteristics to personalize content and ads.
Inferences are estimates produced from available information, not verified facts about you. TikTok describes possible inferences about age, gender, and interests; X gives examples including likely topics of interest, age, and language. Such estimates can be wrong, and their presence does not establish that a platform has confirmed a personal characteristic.

Do social media apps track you outside the app?
Some platforms describe receiving partner information or signals associated with activity on other websites and apps. X’s policy, for example, discusses partner data such as cookie or device identifiers, hashed user information, demographic or interest data, and actions on partner sites or apps. Meta also describes activity information from other businesses and provides a control for its use in personalization. The details depend on the platform, region, settings, and applicable feature; this is not evidence that every app follows the same practices or can see everything you do online.

Device permissions matter too. A service may collect certain information only when a feature is used or a permission is enabled. TikTok’s U.S. policy describes contact syncing as a user choice and possible precise location collection depending on settings. Google says location collection and retention depend in part on account and device settings. Check both app settings and your device’s permission controls.

How to limit personalized ads and activity use
Review each platform’s privacy and ad settings
There is no single switch that governs every platform or every kind of data use. Review privacy and advertising preferences within each service, and read the setting’s explanation before changing it. The result may affect personalization or account history without stopping all service logging, safety processing, or information supplied by other people.
Use Google’s ad and account-activity controls
Google says My Ad Center lets you customize ads or turn off ad personalization. Google also provides controls to delete activity data tied to an account. These controls describe the scope of Google account and ad personalization; they should not be understood as stopping all collection or processing by Google services. Start with Google’s Ads that Respect Your Privacy information and the account controls it describes.
Check Meta’s control for activity from other businesses
Meta announced in June 2026 that the Accounts Center control called “Activity from other businesses,” formerly “Activity information from ad partners,” manages use of this shared activity data for personalized content and ads. The announcement also said Meta would stop offering a separate “Your activity off Meta technologies” setting. Names and availability can vary by region or change, so confirm the current Accounts Center interface rather than relying on an old path.
