IT services companies usually look for a combination of workplace skills and role-specific technical ability. The skills that recur across recent employer research are clear communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, professionalism and time management. Technical expectations vary by the job: application development, infrastructure and cloud, support, data, cybersecurity, consulting and AI-related roles do not use the same stack.
For a fresh graduate, the strongest application is not a long list of tools. It shows, with specific evidence, how you worked with others, investigated a problem, learned something unfamiliar and delivered a result, then connects those examples to the requirements of a particular job posting.
The skills employers consistently want from new graduates
Different surveys use different populations and countries, so no single ranking applies to every IT services employer. However, the same employability capabilities appear repeatedly in U.S. graduate-readiness research, U.S. Tech and IT employer data, and Indian campus-hiring findings.
| Skill area | What it looks like at entry level | Recent employer signal |
|---|---|---|
| Communication | Explaining a technical issue in plain language, documenting work, asking clarifying questions and presenting results. | Repeatedly identified by NACE and Experis as a priority for graduates and technology employers. |
| Teamwork and collaboration | Coordinating tasks, sharing updates, giving and receiving feedback, and being explicit about your own contribution. | NACE lists teamwork among the most important career-readiness skills; Experis grouped communication, collaboration and teamwork at 35%. |
| Problem-solving and critical thinking | Breaking down an unfamiliar issue, comparing options, testing a solution and explaining the reasoning. | Experis reported critical thinking and problem-solving at 39%; NACE says employers want examples of skills used to solve problems. |
| Adaptability and learning agility | Learning a new tool, responding to changed requirements and applying feedback without losing quality. | Experis reported adaptability and willingness to learn at 37%; Deloitte India also highlights learning agility and adaptability. |
| Professionalism and work ethic | Reliable attendance, ownership of commitments, ethical conduct, preparation and respectful interactions. | Professionalism and work ethic were the leading listed human-skill category in the Experis U.S. chart at 44%; NACE also identifies a graduate-readiness gap here. |
| Time management and prioritization | Estimating work, communicating risks early and deciding what must be done first when several tasks compete. | Experis reported time management and prioritization at 24%, placing it among the top five human-skill categories. |
Communication is more than speaking confidently
Services work involves colleagues, clients, users and managers who may not share your technical background. A graduate demonstrates communication by clarifying requirements before coding, writing a useful issue update, documenting assumptions, presenting a result and asking a precise question when blocked. In an interview, explain the problem, your reasoning and the outcome rather than reciting a tool list.

Teamwork means visible, accountable contribution
Employers want evidence that you can contribute to a shared deliverable, not merely claim that you are a “team player.” A course project, internship, volunteer activity or student organization can work. State what you owned, how you coordinated with others, how you handled disagreement and what changed because of your work. Do not take credit for the whole group’s result.
Problem-solving combines investigation and judgment
Entry-level employees are often given incomplete information. Show how you reproduced a defect, gathered facts, separated symptoms from causes, evaluated alternatives and checked whether the fix worked. A concise situation–action–result account from a real assignment is stronger than an unsupported adjective such as “analytical.”
Adaptability is demonstrated learning, not enthusiasm alone
Technology and client requirements change. A credible example might be learning an unfamiliar framework to complete a project, changing an approach after testing exposed a weakness or responding to a revised deadline. Explain what you learned, how you learned it and how you applied it. Do not claim adaptability solely because you completed a course.

Professionalism includes reliability and judgment
Professional conduct covers meeting commitments, preparing for meetings, protecting confidential information, acknowledging mistakes and treating feedback as input to improve. Time management is part of the same signal: break work into checkpoints, prioritize dependencies and tell a lead early when an estimate is no longer realistic.

How technical expectations change by role
There is no defensible, universal technical checklist for every IT services graduate role. The appropriate depth depends on the service line, geography, client environment and level of the position. Recent U.S. Tech and IT employer data and Deloitte India’s campus findings point to several active areas, but they do not make AI mandatory for every job.
| Target role family | Technical preparation to look for in postings | Evidence a graduate can show |
|---|---|---|
| Application development | Programming fundamentals, the languages and frameworks named in the posting, version control, testing and basic software design. | A working application, readable repository, tests, design explanation and a description of your individual contribution. |
| Infrastructure, cloud or operations | Operating-system and networking fundamentals, scripting, monitoring, deployment concepts and the specific cloud or platform tools requested. | A documented lab or project showing configuration, automation, troubleshooting and attention to security. |
| IT support or service desk | Hardware and operating-system basics, identity and access concepts, ticket diagnosis, documentation and customer communication. | A troubleshooting runbook, simulated ticket workflow or support experience that shows clear escalation and resolution notes. |
| Data or analytics | Data cleaning, SQL or other requested query skills, statistics, visualization and the business context of the analysis. | An end-to-end analysis with stated assumptions, validation checks and an explanation understandable to a non-specialist. |
| Cybersecurity | Security fundamentals, networks, logging, risk thinking and the tools or standards named by the employer. | A defensive lab, incident analysis or risk assessment that explains scope, controls and limitations without overstating real-world experience. |
| AI or machine-learning work | AI literacy, model or application development, data handling, evaluation and responsible-use considerations appropriate to the role. | A small, reproducible project showing the data or inputs, method, evaluation, failure cases and what you personally built. |
| Consulting or implementation | Requirements analysis, process mapping, configuration or integration knowledge and strong client-facing communication. | A case, capstone or internship example that links a user need to a proposed solution and explains trade-offs. |
What the current technical signals say
In the 2026 Experis/ManpowerGroup survey, 34% of surveyed U.S. Tech and IT employers selected AI literacy as a top technical skill, 33% selected AI modeling and application development, 29% selected traditional IT and data excluding AI, and 27% selected engineering. The wider Tech and IT Services survey covered 4,655 employers in 42 countries, with fieldwork from January 1 to February 3, 2026; those percentages are from the displayed U.S. skill chart, not global results.
Deloitte India’s Campus Workforce Trends 2026 release, published August 27, 2026, found that AI-aligned campus roles were most prevalent in IT/ITeS organizations among the sectors it compared. It also reported that 35% of organizations said AI adoption was creating new entry-level roles or skill requirements, up from 21% in FY25. These are signals about Indian campus hiring, not proof that every IT services vacancy requires AI development.

What “fresh graduate” evidence employers can accept
Employers do not expect every graduate to have years of production experience. They do expect credible proof that you can perform the behaviors required at work. NACE’s April 2026 analysis says, “The overwhelming majority of employers said they want potential candidates not to just list their skills but to provide examples.”
Projects and coursework
Describe the user or problem, your approach, the tools used, the result and your role. Include constraints and trade-offs when they matter. A group project becomes more persuasive when you identify the module you designed, the defect you investigated or the presentation you delivered, rather than claiming the entire project.
Internships, part-time work and volunteering
Experience does not have to be a formal software internship. Customer service, a campus help desk, event coordination or volunteer technology work can demonstrate prioritization, communication, reliability and handling competing requests. Tie the example to a specific action and result, and do not imply client or production access you did not have.

- A new tool or concept you learned under a deadline.
- A mistake, feedback point or changed requirement and what you did next.
- A time you prioritized several tasks and communicated a risk.
Use a compact situation–action–result structure. Spend most of the answer on what you did and why, then quantify the result only when the number is accurate and meaningful.
A practical preparation plan before applying
- Choose a role family and geography. Decide whether you are targeting development, operations, support, data, security, consulting or another service line, and note the country or market. Requirements and hiring signals differ.
- Collect current job postings. Review several postings for the same role, separating recurring fundamentals from one-off preferences. Record the exact tools, methods, communication duties and assessment steps named.
- Prioritize a small technical core. Learn the fundamentals behind the recurring requirements, then build one or two demonstrable projects. A shallow list of every popular technology is less useful than depth you can explain.
- Build evidence while learning. Keep a short record of decisions, tests, defects, feedback and outcomes. This becomes material for resume bullets and interview stories.
- Make collaboration visible. Use issue tracking, documentation, code review, meeting notes or a clear handoff in a project when appropriate. The goal is to show how work moved through a team, not to manufacture corporate experience.
- Practice plain-language explanations. Explain your project to a technical peer, then to a nontechnical client. Be ready to state assumptions, limitations and what you would improve next.
- Check the application against the posting. Put the most relevant evidence first. Treat courses and credentials as supporting evidence only when they match an actual requirement.
How to compare two IT services opportunities
When choosing between roles or employers, compare the work itself rather than relying on a general reputation. Use the same questions for each posting:
- What technical stack and level of depth are required on day one?
- How much client communication, documentation and teamwork is expected?
- Does the service line explicitly ask for AI, data, cybersecurity or automation capability?
- What proof is requested in screening: a project, coding or technical test, case exercise, internship or credential?
- Which country, office and service line does the posting cover?
Available employer surveys do not provide a reliable company-by-company ranking on these dimensions. The live job description and assessment process for the specific vacancy are the appropriate evidence.

Deloitte India also reported a 20–25% hiring premium for AI and data skills and 10–15% for analytical thinking and problem-solving in the study’s context. These are reported market premiums, not guaranteed individual salary increases. They should not replace checking the compensation and scope of a particular offer.
NACE’s employer survey ran February 12 to March 17, 2026, and included 185 respondents: 142 NACE employer members and 43 nonmember companies. Its companion analysis says employers rate new graduates less strongly in communication, professionalism and critical thinking than in teamwork. The finding is a readiness signal, not a judgment about every graduate.
Common mistakes that weaken a graduate application
- Listing adjectives without proof: “excellent communicator” is weaker than a documented presentation, requirement clarification or customer outcome.
- Overgeneralizing AI demand: AI is a prominent current signal, but many support, infrastructure, implementation and traditional development roles emphasize other fundamentals.
- Chasing every technology: Broad, shallow exposure can leave you unable to explain basic decisions in the tools that matter for the target role.
- Taking group credit: Employers need to know your contribution, decisions and learning.
- Inflating experience: A classroom or lab project can be valuable when labeled accurately; it should not be presented as client or production work.
- Ignoring geography and service line: U.S. survey percentages, Indian campus findings and international employer results are not interchangeable.
- Using credentials as a substitute for capability: A certificate helps only when it supports a requirement and you can apply what it covers.
What the evidence cannot establish
The available employer research does not identify one universally preferred programming language, cloud platform, degree, certification or experience threshold for all IT services fresh graduates. It also does not show that any listed skill guarantees an interview or offer. Treat the surveys as directional signals, then use the current posting, assessment instructions and role-specific conversations to decide what to learn and what evidence to present.
