There is no universally recognized “drone traffic controller” licence. The title can describe two very different kinds of work: conventional air traffic control, which has formal national licensing and training, or the newer unmanned traffic management (UTM) and European U-space ecosystem, where people coordinate flight data, authorizations and operating services. A Remote Pilot Certificate, such as the FAA’s Part 107 certificate, qualifies someone to fly certain drones; it does not qualify that person to control drone traffic.
Your preparation should therefore follow the actual vacancy and jurisdiction. Build communication, coordination, airspace and procedure literacy, situational awareness, emergency-response judgment and confidence with operational information systems, then verify whether the employer wants an air-traffic-control licence, remote-pilot knowledge, software or operations experience, or participation in a certified UTM/U-space service organization.
What a drone traffic controller actually does
The phrase is used loosely because drone traffic management is still developing. Conventional air traffic controllers issue clearances and instructions within a regulated control service. UTM and U-space work is more often a networked coordination function: operators, service suppliers and regulators exchange information so that low-altitude flights can be authorized, separated, monitored and adjusted safely.

The FAA describes UTM as a community-based, cooperative traffic-management system. Operators and entities providing operational-support services coordinate, execute and manage operations under rules established by the FAA. In practice, that can mean checking flight intent, reconciling planned routes, distributing activity notifications, handling airspace or UAS-volume reservations, and escalating conflicts or emergencies.

FAA UTM demonstrations have involved sharing flight intent among operators, notifying stakeholders about air and ground activity, and sharing UAS Volume Reservations with other service suppliers and the Flight Information Management System. A person working in this environment may monitor dashboards, validate data, apply procedures and coordinate with other organizations rather than speak directly to every pilot.
U-space adds regulated service functions in Europe
In Europe, U-space is designated airspace in which operators use services such as flight authorization and geo-awareness. EASA material focuses on the certification of organizations that provide those services and on the competence needed to deliver safe, orderly and efficient air traffic services. That organizational model does not create one personal, Europe-wide drone-controller licence.
The technology and rules are still being tested
The FAA says its UTM Field Test was conducted in 2023 to validate proposed standards and evaluate capabilities for visual-line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations. The work also examined correlation of remote-identification data and cybersecurity. Those tests show why employers may value systems, data and security skills alongside aviation knowledge.

Core skills employers are likely to value
No regulator has published a complete competency framework for a job formally titled drone traffic controller. The skills below are practical inferences from FAA controller and remote-pilot requirements and from documented UTM functions. Treat them as preparation targets, not as a substitute for a vacancy’s stated requirements.
| Skill | Why it matters in UTM or U-space | How to demonstrate it |
|---|---|---|
| Clear communication | Controllers and operations staff must exchange concise, unambiguous information with pilots, service providers, airports, emergency agencies and regulators. | Show radio, dispatch, incident-briefing or control-room experience. Practise structured read-backs and concise written handovers. |
| Coordination and crew resource management | Multiple operators and service suppliers may share airspace data, reservations and status updates. A safe outcome depends on coordinated decisions, not one person’s isolated judgment. | Describe multidisciplinary operations, shift handovers, escalation procedures and examples of resolving conflicting priorities. |
| Airspace and procedure literacy | Understanding controlled and uncontrolled airspace, restrictions, operating rules and standard procedures helps you recognize an unsafe or incomplete plan. | Study the applicable national rules and be able to explain how a route, altitude, weather condition or restriction changes an operation. |
| Situational awareness | Low-altitude operations can change quickly because of weather, ground activity, temporary restrictions, lost links or emergency traffic. | Use scenario practice: identify the current state, likely hazards, available options, decision authority and next update time. |
| Operational data and software fluency | UTM functions rely on flight-intent exchange, notifications, reservation data, identity information, maps and service interfaces. | Build competence with geospatial dashboards, spreadsheets, ticketing or incident systems, APIs and data-quality checks where the job description calls for them. |
| Weather and emergency judgment | Wind, visibility, precipitation, battery limits, lost communications and unexpected people or vehicles can invalidate a plan. | Learn to interpret aviation weather products and practise documented responses to diversions, emergency landings and communication failures. |
| Security and privacy awareness | Identity, telemetry and location data can affect public safety and critical infrastructure. FAA UTM testing included cybersecurity considerations. | Understand access control, audit trails, incident reporting and the difference between operational data that may be shared and data that must be protected. |
Which certification path applies?
Path 1: Conventional air traffic control
If a vacancy is for an FAA air traffic control specialist rather than a UTM operations role, it follows the conventional ATC pipeline. FAA entry-level requirements include U.S. citizenship, being under age 31 at appointment, a medical examination, a security investigation, pre-employment testing and clear spoken English. Applicants generally qualify through one year of progressively responsible work experience, a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and work experience.
Selected candidates attend FAA Academy training and then normally spend another two to three years in classroom and on-the-job training before becoming certified professional controllers. Controllers must also complete continuing proficiency training. These are requirements for FAA ATC hiring; they should not be assumed to apply to every company building or operating a UTM platform.

Path 2: European conventional ATC
EASA’s air traffic controller licensing framework requires theoretical courses, practical exercises that include simulation, and on-the-job training. The training is designed to acquire and maintain the skills needed to provide safe, orderly and expeditious air traffic control services. Each European state and employer applies its own licensing, medical, language and authorization details, so check the national authority and the exact licence category.
Path 3: FAA Part 107 remote pilot certification
The FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is for people who operate small unmanned aircraft under the Small UAS Rule. A first-time applicant must be at least 16, meet the FAA’s language and physical or mental fitness conditions, and pass the Unmanned Aircraft General–Small knowledge test. Certain pilots who hold a qualifying Part 61 certificate can use an alternate route specified by the FAA.
The Part 107 knowledge areas include regulations, airspace, weather, aircraft loading and performance, emergencies, crew resource management and radio communications. To keep operating under Part 107, certificate holders must complete the required recurrent online training within the preceding 24 calendar months.

This certificate can be useful background for a UTM role because it gives you a structured understanding of drone operations. It does not authorize you to issue traffic clearances, supervise other operators or perform ATC.
Path 4: UTM and U-space service or operations roles
FAA and EASA materials describe UTM and U-space services, responsibilities, data exchanges and provider certification, but they do not establish one standardized personal credential called a drone traffic controller certificate. A UTM employer may instead ask for aviation operations experience, dispatch or control-room work, software and data skills, communications experience, cybersecurity knowledge, or a conventional ATC or remote-pilot background.

Compare the two main career directions
| Factor | Conventional air traffic control | UTM/U-space service or operations work |
|---|---|---|
| Primary activity | Provide formal air traffic control services and instructions within designated airspace. | Coordinate flight intent, authorizations, notifications, reservations, information services and operational responses. |
| Regulatory model | Personal selection, licensing, medical and proficiency systems administered under national rules. | Rules and service requirements apply to the system and provider; personal requirements vary by employer and country. |
| Typical training evidence | Academy or approved theoretical training, simulation, on-the-job training and recurrent proficiency. | Employer-specific operational, aviation, software, communications or security training; a universal personal licence is not established. |
| Useful adjacent certificate | The relevant national ATC licence or student-controller pathway. | Part 107 or an equivalent remote-pilot credential may add aviation context, but it is not a controller qualification. |
| Work style | Highly procedural, often shift-based and tied to a defined control responsibility. | Frequently collaborative and data-driven, with coordination across operators, service suppliers and regulators. |
A practical preparation plan
- Identify the job category. Read the employer’s duties line by line. Look for terms such as air traffic control, UTM, U-space, flight authorization, geo-awareness, dispatch, operations center, service supplier, surveillance, remote identification or incident management.
- Confirm the jurisdiction. Determine whether the position is governed by FAA rules, an EASA member-state authority, another national aviation regulator, or only the employer’s internal procedures. Age, citizenship, medical, language, security and licensing rules can change by country.
- Choose the matching credential. Apply to the conventional ATC pathway if the job is an ATC position. Consider Part 107 when the role includes operating small UAS or requires knowledge of remote-pilot procedures. Do not present Part 107 as a traffic-control licence.
- Build operational communication habits. Practise read-backs, standardized phraseology where applicable, shift handovers, priority calls and written incident timelines. Ask a training provider or employer which communication standard it uses before assuming a particular radio qualification is required.
- Learn the airspace and weather fundamentals. Be able to interpret restrictions, controlled-airspace boundaries, altitude limits, visibility and wind information, and emergency procedures for the country in which you will work.
- Practise data-driven scenarios. Work through a flight-intent conflict, a temporary restriction, a lost-link alert, a weather deterioration and a suspected identity or telemetry mismatch. For each, record what you know, what is uncertain, who has decision authority, what action is allowed and when the situation must be reviewed.
- Gain systems experience. Use mapping, scheduling, incident, database or dashboard tools in a way that demonstrates careful data entry, validation, access control and auditability. If the vacancy names a particular platform, learn that product only after confirming the employer’s current version and training method.
- Document transferable evidence. On your résumé, connect each skill to an outcome: coordinated simultaneous operations, detected a data-quality error, escalated a safety issue, maintained accurate logs or trained colleagues on a procedure.
- Verify the final requirement before paying for training. Ask the recruiter or regulator whether a certificate is mandatory, preferred or irrelevant; whether it must be current; and whether the employer supplies the required training after hire.
How to check a vacancy without being misled by the title
- Look for the authority you will exercise. “Issue clearances,” “separate aircraft” and “control sector traffic” suggest conventional ATC. “Validate intent,” “coordinate service suppliers” and “monitor platform alerts” suggest UTM operations.
- Separate personal credentials from company approvals. A provider’s U-space certification or operational approval does not automatically certify every employee.
- Check whether the role includes flying. If you will pilot or test drones, a remote-pilot certificate may be required in addition to operations qualifications.
- Ask about shift, medical and security conditions. ATC roles commonly have formal screening; a commercial UTM desk may have different background, shift and occupational-health rules.
- Request the current rule reference. Aviation requirements change. Confirm the regulator, rule part, licence class, renewal or recurrent-training interval and accepted examination route in writing.
Common mistakes to avoid
Assuming one title means one occupation
“Drone traffic controller” can describe a controller, dispatcher, UTM service operator, software operations analyst or remote pilot. Apply for the duties, not the label.
Buying a remote-pilot course for an ATC job
Part 107 study covers valuable drone knowledge, but it cannot replace FAA or national ATC selection, licensing and controller training.
Treating provider certification as an employee licence
U-space certification evaluates an organization’s capability to provide services. Confirm what personal training and authorization the vacancy requires.

Ignoring local rules
FAA requirements are specific to the United States, while EASA material sits within a European regulatory framework implemented through national authorities. Never generalize an age limit, citizenship rule, medical standard or examination process across countries.
What to put on a strong application
Lead with the exact operational experience that matches the vacancy: control-room or dispatch work, aviation communications, safety reporting, geospatial monitoring, incident response, software operations, cybersecurity or certified UAS flight experience. Name the systems you used, the procedures you followed and the decisions you were authorized to make. Then list the relevant certificate with its issuing authority and currency, clearly distinguishing an ATC licence, a remote-pilot certificate and employer-specific UTM training.
As of October 2026, the safest answer to the question is conditional: conventional ATC has formal personal licensing and training; UTM and U-space jobs have no single universally established personal credential; and Part 107 is a remote-pilot qualification. Match your skills and certification to the actual responsibility, regulator and employer.
