Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
There is no universal “recommended VPS size.” Choose the plan whose limiting resource matches your workload: shared CPU for light or bursty services, dedicated general-purpose CPU for most production applications, CPU-optimized capacity for sustained computation, memory-optimized capacity for large working sets, and storage-optimized capacity for demanding data stores. Start with measurable headroom, then resize when monitoring shows a sustained bottleneck.
A plan that looks generous on paper can waste money if its resources are idle. An undersized VPS can hit CPU saturation, memory pressure, swap, disk latency, or transfer limits and produce slow responses or errors. The right choice therefore depends on concurrency, peak behavior, software overhead, data size, and growth—not just the vCPU and RAM numbers in a product name.

Use this sequence before comparing providers or bundles:
- Classify the dominant demand. Decide whether your service will run out of CPU time, RAM, disk capacity or I/O, or network transfer first.
- Estimate concurrency and peaks. Count simultaneous requests, users, background jobs, containers, database connections, and scheduled spikes.
- Pick the matching resource family. Shared CPU suits lighter or bursty workloads; dedicated general-purpose plans balance CPU and memory; CPU-optimized plans provide more CPU per unit of RAM; memory-optimized plans provide more RAM per vCPU; storage-optimized plans emphasize disk capacity or performance.
- Budget the whole machine. Reserve capacity for the operating system, runtime, database, logs, backups, monitoring agents, and growth. Include transfer allowances and possible egress charges.
- Measure and resize. Monitor saturation, latency, errors, swap, I/O wait, and transfer. Resize when a bottleneck remains high during normal peaks.
For a personal site, staging server, small reverse proxy, or hobby project, a small shared-CPU or burstable plan is usually a sensible starting point. A production web app, e-commerce site, SaaS service, or medium database generally belongs on dedicated general-purpose CPU. Encoding, CI/CD, batch processing, and other continuously compute-heavy jobs call for CPU-optimized capacity. Large caches, analytics working sets, and memory-heavy applications need memory-optimized capacity, while large or high-performance data stores need storage-optimized disks.

What a VPS resource actually does
vCPU and CPU policy
A vCPU is a schedulable share of a physical processor. The number alone does not tell you how much continuous performance you will receive. A shared vCPU may compete with neighboring tenants and may be allowed to burst for short periods. A dedicated vCPU is reserved for your instance more consistently, which matters for predictable latency and sustained workloads. Processor generation, clock behavior, virtualization policy, and the provider’s contention rules can make two plans with identical vCPU counts perform differently.
Burstable plans work well when demand is intermittent: a site receives occasional traffic spikes, a reverse proxy handles short surges, or a development server is idle much of the day. They are a poor fit for an encoder, build farm, analytics job, or API that keeps every core busy. For those cases, compare documented continuous CPU capacity and benchmark your own workload rather than relying on a burst-credit label.
RAM
RAM holds the operating system, application processes, database working sets, file cache, and in-memory queues. When available memory runs low, Linux may reclaim cache, compress pages, or swap to disk. Swap prevents an immediate crash but is dramatically slower than RAM and can turn a healthy-looking CPU graph into a latency problem. Leave room for normal cache growth and for the largest expected request or job, not just the average process footprint.
Storage capacity and I/O
Storage sizing has two independent dimensions: how many gigabytes you need and how quickly the disk must serve reads and writes. Databases, queues, and log-heavy applications can be limited by latency or IOPS while plenty of capacity remains. Check whether the plan uses SSD or NVMe, the expected I/O performance, volume limits, snapshot behavior, and how quickly backups can be written. Keep free space for database maintenance, temporary files, package updates, and log rotation.
Network transfer and throughput
Included transfer is a monthly allowance, not a guarantee of unlimited traffic. Media delivery, software downloads, public APIs, VPNs, and busy image-heavy sites can consume it quickly. Also check peak network throughput and any provider limits on packets or connections. A VPS with ample CPU and RAM can still fail its business requirement if it exhausts transfer or cannot deliver data at the required rate.
Choose the resource family for the workload
Shared CPU or small burstable plans
Choose shared CPU when utilization is low most of the time and short bursts are acceptable. Typical uses include a personal site, staging environment, small content-management system, monitoring endpoint, development box, or reverse proxy. Verify memory pressure, CPU burst balance or equivalent credit behavior, and transfer consumption. If response times degrade whenever neighbors are busy or your own burst allowance is exhausted, move to a plan with guaranteed or dedicated CPU.
Dedicated general-purpose plans
General-purpose dedicated CPU is the default for many production systems because it balances predictable compute with moderate RAM and disk. It is suitable for e-commerce, SaaS, authenticated web applications, and medium databases whose CPU demand is steady but not extreme. Confirm sustained CPU utilization, database latency, disk I/O wait, and connection counts under peak traffic. If one resource remains consistently underused while another is saturated, a specialized family may deliver better value than simply adding a larger general-purpose bundle.

CPU-optimized plans
CPU-optimized plans increase compute per unit of memory. They fit video or audio encoding, continuous integration runners, compilation, scientific calculations, rendering, batch transformations, and other jobs that keep cores busy. DigitalOcean’s published CPU-optimized range uses a 2:1 memory-to-CPU ratio, from 2 vCPUs with 4 GB RAM through 32 vCPUs with 64 GB RAM. That ratio is a provider-specific design, not a universal requirement. Measure queue time and completed work per hour; adding cores helps only when the software parallelizes effectively.
Memory-optimized plans
Memory-optimized plans provide substantially more RAM for each vCPU. They suit SQL or NoSQL databases with large working sets, Redis-style caches, in-memory analytics, and applications that keep many records or sessions resident. DigitalOcean’s published memory-optimized family provides 8 GB RAM per vCPU and starts at 2 vCPUs with 16 GB RAM. Watch resident memory, swap activity, cache-hit rate, and database read latency. If the working set fits comfortably in RAM and CPU is the bottleneck, buying still more memory will not solve the problem.
Storage-optimized plans and attached volumes
Storage-optimized capacity is appropriate for large datasets, high-performance data stores, search indexes, and analytics files. Select it when disk capacity, latency, or write throughput is the constraint. Compare local NVMe or SSD characteristics, volume expansion, replication options, snapshot limits, and backup duration. Separate application and database volumes when that lets you isolate noisy logs or parallelize I/O, but account for the extra cost and operational complexity.

VPN gateways, media delivery, artifact repositories, and high-traffic APIs need sufficient transfer and network throughput. Start by estimating monthly bytes and peak Mbps, then verify the plan’s allowance and any overage or egress pricing. CPU and RAM may be modest, but encryption, connection tracking, and packet rates can still create a CPU bottleneck at high concurrency.
Starting points by workload
| Workload | Starting class | Verify before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Personal site, staging, small reverse proxy | Shared CPU or a small burstable bundle | RAM pressure, CPU burst balance, transfer use |
| Small production app or CMS | Shared premium or small dedicated general-purpose plan | Concurrent users, database memory, disk I/O |
| E-commerce, SaaS, medium web app | Dedicated general-purpose | Sustained CPU, database latency, transfer |
| Video encoding, CI/CD, batch jobs | CPU-optimized | Sustained throughput and queue time |
| SQL/NoSQL database, cache, analytics | Memory-optimized | Working-set size, swap, cache-hit rate, I/O |
| Large data store or analytics files | Storage-optimized plus an appropriate data volume | NVMe or SSD latency, capacity growth, backup time |
| VPN, media delivery, network-heavy service | Plan with adequate transfer and network throughput | Egress allowance, peak throughput, provider limits |
These are starting classes, not guarantees. Your framework, database engine, query mix, traffic geography, and caching strategy can move the requirement up or down.
How much CPU and RAM do common applications need?
Personal sites and test environments
A low-traffic static site, documentation server, or test environment normally spends most of its time idle. A small shared-CPU plan can be enough if the operating system, web server, runtime, and monitoring agents fit without swapping. Leave room for package upgrades and temporary build files. If a staging server also runs a database, CI runner, and browser-based tests, size for the combined peak rather than the quiet web page.
Small production applications
A modest application often has two separate limits: request processing and database memory. Two vCPUs may handle the web tier while a database query or background worker consumes the available RAM. Measure concurrent requests, worker count, connection pool size, and slow-query latency. A shared plan can work for light traffic, but a dedicated general-purpose plan gives more predictable CPU when users depend on consistent response times.

E-commerce and SaaS
Checkout, authentication, scheduled jobs, search, and reporting can peak at different times. Count active sessions and background workers together, and include the database, cache, queue, and reverse proxy if they share one VPS. Dedicated general-purpose CPU is a reasonable baseline; move to memory-optimized capacity when the database or cache working set no longer fits, or to CPU-optimized capacity when request and job queues remain compute-bound.
Databases and caches
Database sizing should begin with the hot working set, not total table size. Add RAM for the operating system and database overhead, then observe cache-hit rate, page faults, swap, checkpoint or flush latency, and disk queue depth. A cache that spills to disk can erase its latency advantage. Storage performance matters for writes, indexes, and recovery even when CPU utilization is low.
Encoding, builds, and batch processing
These workloads are often throughput-oriented. Record how long a representative job takes, how many jobs queue during a peak, and whether the software scales across cores. CPU-optimized plans can shorten the queue more efficiently than a memory-heavy plan, provided the input and output disks can keep up. Include temporary working space and enough transfer for source artifacts and outputs.
Is 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM enough?
It can be, but the label is not an answer by itself. DigitalOcean lists 2 vCPUs and 4 GB RAM as the lower end of its CPU-optimized family, where the 2:1 memory-to-CPU ratio is intentional. That configuration may suit a small production service, a light database, or a modest build runner when the processes and working set fit in memory. It is not automatically sufficient for every application with the same headline numbers.

- Likely adequate: a low-concurrency web app, a small CMS with an external database, a light API, or an intermittent build job with modest dependencies.
- Potentially tight: a web server, database, cache, queue, and monitoring stack sharing one host; a workload with many language workers; or a site that experiences large traffic bursts.
- Usually the wrong shape: sustained encoding, large in-memory analytics, or a data store whose hot set exceeds available RAM.
Test with production-like concurrency. If CPU is saturated while RAM remains comfortable, use more or faster dedicated CPU. If RAM is nearly full, swap grows, or cache-hit rate falls, add memory. If both are comfortable but requests wait on storage, improve disk performance instead of buying more vCPUs.
Shared versus dedicated CPU
| Characteristic | Shared CPU | Dedicated CPU |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Low or bursty utilization, development, small sites | Production services and sustained workloads |
| Performance behavior | May vary with host contention and burst policy | More predictable continuous capacity |
| Typical risk | Credit exhaustion or noisy-neighbor variability | Higher cost when resources are idle |
| What to monitor | Burst balance, CPU steal or contention, latency | Sustained utilization, queue time, latency |
DigitalOcean’s guidance captures the trade-off: an oversized Droplet can underuse resources and cost more, while an undersized one running at full CPU or memory can suffer degraded performance or errors. Apply the same principle to any provider: pay for predictable capacity where your workload needs it, but do not buy dedicated cores solely because a specification sheet looks impressive.

| Amazon Lightsail larger Linux/Unix example | 4 vCPUs, 16 GB RAM, 320 GB storage | Published 2026 example; transfer is not stated for this row |
Amazon Web Services describes each Lightsail bundle as combining vCPUs, RAM, storage, and a data-transfer allowance. Its current examples publish CPU-performance baselines from 5% to 40%, with burst capacity accrued and consumed over time. Treat those baselines as that service’s documented behavior, not as a universal definition of a vCPU.
Budget the complete capacity and cost
Do not allocate every advertised gigabyte to your application. Reserve RAM for the operating system, runtime, database, log shippers, security agents, and monitoring. Reserve disk for package caches, temporary files, database maintenance, snapshots or backup staging, and log growth. If several services share one VPS, size for the moment their peaks overlap.
Monthly cost also includes attached volumes, backups, snapshots, reserved addresses, managed databases, monitoring, and transfer overages. A cheaper instance with a small transfer allowance can cost more than a larger bundle for a media or API workload. Conversely, an oversized instance can waste money every month if CPU and RAM remain idle. Compare total monthly capacity, not just the base hourly rate.

- CPU utilization, load, saturation, and steal or contention time.
- Used and available RAM, reclaimable cache, swap-in and swap-out, and out-of-memory events.
- Disk latency, IOPS, throughput, queue depth, and I/O wait.
- Application response time, request rate, queue time, error rate, and timeouts.
- Database connection count, slow queries, cache-hit rate, and checkpoint or flush latency.
- Network transfer consumed, peak throughput, packet rates, and connection counts.
- Free disk space, inode usage, backup duration, and snapshot success.
Resize when a metric remains near its limit during the periods that matter to users. High CPU with long request queues indicates more or faster CPU. Full RAM, swap activity, or falling cache-hit rate indicates more memory. High I/O wait with low CPU indicates faster or less-contended storage. Transfer exhaustion or network saturation requires a plan with more allowance or throughput. After resizing, verify that the original symptom improved; otherwise you may have increased the wrong resource.
Common sizing mistakes and fixes
Choosing by vCPU count alone
Two vCPUs can represent very different continuous performance, and an application can be memory- or I/O-bound while CPU stays low. Check the CPU policy, RAM, storage, and transfer together.
Ignoring peak concurrency
Average traffic hides launch events, promotions, cron jobs, backups, and batch queues. Model the busiest overlap you expect, then leave headroom for growth.

Putting every service on one small VPS
A web server, database, cache, queue, CI runner, and monitoring stack compete for the same memory and disk. Separate tiers when isolation or independent scaling matters; otherwise include every process in one capacity model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Relying on swap as extra RAM
Swap can keep a process alive but introduces disk latency and can trigger cascading timeouts. Treat sustained swap activity as evidence to add RAM or reduce the working set.
Forgetting transfer and backups
Large downloads, replication, snapshots, and off-site backups consume network allowance and disk space. Include their schedules in peak calculations and verify that backup time fits your recovery objectives.
Assuming resizing is risk-free
Some changes require a reboot, migration, or temporary loss of network connectivity. Confirm the provider’s resize process, take a tested backup, schedule a maintenance window when necessary, and verify application health afterward.
Worked sizing decisions
A personal documentation site
Traffic is low and bursty, pages are mostly static, and the database is small. Start with shared CPU, confirm that RAM remains comfortable during builds and updates, and watch transfer if the site serves large downloads. Move to dedicated CPU only when measured contention or sustained CPU affects response time.
A subscription SaaS application
The web tier, database, queue, and scheduled reports share a predictable daily peak. Start with dedicated general-purpose CPU and enough RAM for the database working set plus operating-system and application overhead. If reports create a CPU queue, add compute or isolate workers; if the database swaps or misses cache, move toward memory-optimized capacity.
A nightly media-encoding pipeline
Jobs run for hours and queue behind one another. Choose CPU-optimized capacity sized by measured throughput per core, verify that input and output storage can sustain the read/write rate, and include temporary space. A burstable plan may complete occasional jobs cheaply but is unsuitable when the queue must drain continuously.
A Redis-like cache and analytics service
The working set must remain resident and analytics queries may scan large structures. Favor memory-optimized capacity, measure cache-hit rate and swap, and select storage with enough I/O for persistence and recovery. Scale out or separate analytics when one host cannot provide both predictable cache latency and acceptable query throughput.
When to upgrade, downgrade, or split the service
Upgrade vertically when one resource is clearly saturated and the application is otherwise easy to keep on one host. Downgrade only after monitoring shows sustained unused headroom through representative peaks, and keep a rollback path. Split the architecture when independent components have different bottlenecks—for example, a CPU-heavy worker pool alongside a memory-heavy database—or when a single VPS creates an unacceptable failure domain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRecheck sizing after major changes: a new framework version, database migration, traffic source, caching policy, background job, or retention period can alter the bottleneck. Capacity is a continuing operational decision, not a one-time product selection.
