Your first gaming PC should match the games you want to play, the screen you plan to use, and the total amount you can spend—not a universal “beginner” spec. List a few games, check their requirements, choose a resolution and smoothness target, then compare prebuilts, laptops, and custom desktops against that plan.

What does a beginner gaming PC need?

“Beginner-friendly” describes a buyer’s needs, not a fixed hardware tier. Intel’s budget-PC guide uses most games at 1080p and roughly 60 frames per second as an example baseline; that is Intel’s illustration, not an industry-wide definition or a promise that every game will perform that way on the same hardware. Games, settings, and expectations differ.

Start by writing down a few games you expect to play. For each, find the publisher’s current minimum and recommended system requirements. Compare those with the computer’s processor (CPU), graphics processor (GPU), memory (RAM), and storage. A PC that meets a game’s recommended requirements is a more useful starting point than one selected by a generic “gaming” label, though the actual experience still depends on resolution, graphics settings, and other factors.

Intel’s advice is straightforward: “To get a sense of what hardware configuration you need, come up with a list of a few games you want to play, taking note of their system requirements.” Intel’s guide to choosing a prebuilt gaming PC also recommends matching the CPU and GPU to the monitor you intend to use.

Set a realistic screen target

1080p generally leaves more hardware options than higher resolutions or high refresh rates. If you want a sharper 1440p or 4K image, or very high frame rates, the GPU has more work to do. A high-refresh-rate monitor is most useful when the PC can produce enough frames to take advantage of it; a monitor’s advertised refresh rate alone does not make games run faster.

Competitive shooters may make smooth motion and high frame rates a priority, while casual games or slower-paced adventures may put less emphasis on them. Decide what matters for your own games before paying extra for a display or graphics hardware.

How to choose a first gaming PC

  1. Name your games. Pick several titles you actually expect to play, rather than shopping around vague future possibilities.
  2. Check system requirements. Use each game’s current minimum and recommended requirements, and compare them with the listed CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage. Requirements can change, so verify them for the version you plan to play.
  3. Choose resolution and smoothness goals. Decide whether 1080p is enough, whether you want a higher resolution, and whether high refresh rates matter for your games.
  4. Set a whole-setup budget. Include the PC, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and any headset you need. Reuse compatible equipment you already own rather than budgeting for replacements by default.
  5. Compare complete configurations. Check the exact CPU and GPU, memory capacity, SSD size, warranty, included accessories, ports, physical dimensions, and stated upgrade options—not just the product name.

Prebuilt, laptop, or custom desktop?

These routes solve different problems. A prebuilt desktop reduces assembly work and may give you one company to contact for system support. A custom build gives you more control over component selection but requires you to choose compatible parts and assemble or arrange assembly. A gaming laptop combines the computer and display in a portable package, usually trading desktop-style upgrade flexibility for mobility. No route is automatically best for every new player.

Route Best fit Trade-offs to check
Prebuilt desktop You want an assembled system and prefer a single support contact. Inspect the precise parts, warranty, ports, case space, included accessories, and upgrade options. Manufacturer advice favoring prebuilts is guidance, not independent proof that they suit everyone.
Custom desktop You want to select parts individually and are comfortable with the extra planning and build steps. Check component compatibility and account for costs a parts list may omit. Tom’s Hardware says its gaming-build totals exclude operating-system and peripheral costs.
Gaming laptop You need a portable computer or have limited space for a fixed desk setup. Compare its GPU and CPU with the games and display target, and check the laptop’s screen, ports, memory and storage configuration, warranty, and upgrade options.

HP’s 2026 buying guide presents desktop-versus-laptop choice as a lifestyle decision and describes prebuilts as a practical option for many first-time buyers. That is manufacturer guidance, not a guarantee that a prebuilt is cheaper or better than a custom build. For current component-build examples, Tom’s Hardware’s gaming PC build guide was last updated September 30, 2026; its listed totals do not include an operating system or peripherals.

How much RAM and storage should you look for?

In its 2026 gaming-PC guide, HP recommends 16 GB of RAM as a minimum for gaming and 32 GB for streaming or heavier multitasking. These are HP’s buying-guide recommendations, not universal requirements for every title: compare them with the games and applications you intend to run.

HP recommends starting with a 512 GB NVMe SSD and suggests more capacity for games that take substantial space. Your library size matters: if you plan to install many large games at once, a 1 TB or larger drive may be more convenient. Storage is often easier to expand later than a graphics card, but the actual options depend on the PC’s configuration, available slots, and warranty terms.

What should you verify before buying?

  • The exact configuration: Confirm the named CPU and GPU, RAM amount, SSD capacity, and display details on the specific listing. Do not assume similarly named versions have identical components.
  • Fit and connectivity: Check the PC’s physical dimensions, available ports, and whether it fits your desk and connects to your monitor and other devices.
  • Support and warranty: Read the warranty terms and identify who handles support. The listing and manufacturer documentation should establish what is covered.
  • Upgrade flexibility: Check what can be expanded or replaced in that configuration. Desktop upgrade options vary; a model’s “upgradeable” label does not establish that every component can be changed easily.
  • Total cost: Add any missing display, keyboard, mouse, headset, and operating-system costs to the computer price. Keep build totals and prebuilt prices comparable by checking what each includes.

Intel recommends aligning the PC’s CPU and GPU with the display and intended games. HP also advises buyers to consider warranty, storage, and upgrade options. For a specific system, the manufacturer’s listing is the place to verify those details; general buying guidance cannot confirm what a particular model includes.

What if a game runs poorly?

First compare the computer with the game’s requirements and reduce demanding video settings to see whether performance improves. Steam Support notes that manually adjusting video options can increase frame rates. If the system does not meet a game’s requirements, Steam says an appropriate hardware upgrade may be needed. Steam Support’s performance troubleshooting guidance explains these general steps; they cannot guarantee a particular improvement on every system.
