The most useful Surface Laptop Ultra test is not a single benchmark: it is a reproducible check of whether its RTX Spark hardware can run your real AI, creative, and Windows apps at acceptable speed, temperature, noise, and battery cost. Microsoft says the laptop combines an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU, Arm CPU cores, CUDA support, and up to 128 GB of unified memory; those are manufacturer claims, not a substitute for results from the exact configuration being tested. Here is the evidence readers should ask for.

Start by proving which Surface Laptop Ultra you tested

Before publishing performance numbers, identify the unit. Microsoft announced Surface Laptop Ultra on May 31, 2026, as a Windows laptop engineered with NVIDIA and optimized for RTX Spark. On October 7, Microsoft said pre-orders were open and availability would begin October 16, 2026. The earlier announcement described pre-release hardware and noted that availability and features could vary by region and regulatory approval, so distinguish a preproduction sample from a retail unit.

  • Photograph or capture the exact model/SKU, memory configuration, firmware, Windows build, GPU driver, and selected power mode.
  • Record whether the unit is preproduction or retail, the date and region of the test, and the software versions used.
  • When comparing performance, use the same software, settings, output, and power conditions on every system. Name the competing configurations rather than comparing product families in the abstract.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra announcement calls it “the most powerful Surface Laptop ever built.” That is Microsoft’s characterization; a comparative test should define its own workloads and alternatives.

Can it run local AI models usefully?

This is the headline test because Microsoft says Surface Laptop Ultra can run local models up to 120 billion parameters and claims one petaflop of AI compute. The company’s note says the one-petaflop figure comes from NVIDIA and refers to theoretical FP4 TOPS using sparsity; it is not an observed end-to-end result. A model’s parameter count alone also does not show whether a particular model, quantization, context length, and workload will fit or respond usefully.

Make the AI run reproducible

  1. State the model and version, quantization, context length, batch size, inference framework, and relevant runtime or driver versions.
  2. Run a defined prompt or workload and report time to first token and steady-state tokens per second separately.
  3. During the run, record memory use, power draw, temperatures, and fan or noise behavior; say how each was measured.
  4. For a claimed 120-billion-parameter run, identify the exact model and configuration and disclose any compromises. Do not imply that every model of that size fits or is practical.

Microsoft describes RTX Spark as combining Blackwell RTX graphics, Arm CPU cores, and up to 128 GB unified memory. It also describes Windows scheduler and power/thermal work, Windows ML/TensorRT support, and unified-memory changes for the platform. Those design claims make sustained performance and memory behavior especially useful things to measure, but they do not predict the result for a specific model.

Test creator work and CUDA support separately

A creator laptop should be tested with real, repeatable tasks—not a single synthetic score. Choose a defined export, render, compile, or image/video-generation job, and record the application version, project or input, settings, output, elapsed time, power mode, and whether GPU acceleration was active. Separate CUDA-accelerated work from CPU-heavy work so readers can tell which part of the system helped.

Microsoft lists Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Cinema 4D, Redshift, Topaz Photo, CapCut, Cubase, Bitwig Studio, Affinity, Photoshop, and Premiere as native or optimized app examples. Its platform material says CUDA-accelerated PyTorch and other technologies are planned for RTX Spark. App status can depend on edition, version, plug-ins, and driver, so verify the precise combination used instead of treating a name on a support list as proof that every workflow works.

Check Windows on Arm compatibility beyond installation

Microsoft says Prism supports emulation of 32- and 64-bit x86 applications on Windows on Arm and has AVX/AVX2 enhancements. Emulation support does not establish that every app, plug-in, driver, or peripheral behaves correctly. For the software your readers rely on, record whether it is native or emulated, whether GPU acceleration works, and whether installation, updates, and connected devices function as expected.

Microsoft says MATLAB officially supports Windows on Arm via Prism. That specific statement should not be generalized to unrelated technical applications or to every MATLAB add-on.

Measure the screen, battery, and mobility

Microsoft lists a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness and 262 pixels per inch. A useful screen report states the measurement mode and equipment: disclose whether brightness was measured in SDR or HDR and under what conditions, and include calibration details for any color-accuracy result. The peak HDR claim should not be presented as a typical sustained SDR brightness measurement.

Microsoft calls battery life “all-day,” but says the statement is based on internal testing of pre-release units and varies significantly with usage, settings, and other factors. It publishes no numeric duration in the cited announcement. If you test battery life, name the workload, display brightness, power mode, network conditions, and start/end criteria; otherwise report the claim as Microsoft’s, not as a measured result.

Also report weight, charging behavior, and surface temperatures if measured. Microsoft’s cited announcements do not state a final weight, so do not fill that gap with an estimate.

Verify the ports instead of guessing from their names

Microsoft lists HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD-card, and headphone ports. The announcement does not specify interface generations or transfer rates. Test and identify actual port behavior: data transfer speed, display output, card-reader speed, and charging behavior. Report the attached device, test method, and any negotiated mode; a connector type alone does not establish bandwidth or capability. Practical repair access is another useful check, but do not claim repairability without documenting what can be accessed and how.

Put Microsoft’s comparative figures in context

Microsoft’s October 7 update reports RTX Spark Windows PCs reaching up to 2.1x faster time to first token, 4.3x faster AI image generation, and 6.2x faster AI video generation versus an Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro and 64 GB memory. Microsoft says the Microsoft- and NVIDIA-commissioned tests took place in September 2026 on selected preproduction systems with specific models, settings, and workloads, and that results vary by device, configuration, and use. These are workload-specific commissioned comparisons, not universal multipliers for every app or RTX Spark laptop. The post does not establish that those figures came from a retail Surface Laptop Ultra test.

Microsoft’s October post also names RTX Spark variants of the ASUS ProArt P14 and P16, Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, HP OmniBook Ultra 16, Lenovo Yoga 9n 2-in-1, and MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI+ as pre-order options with shipping beginning October 16. They are potential comparison candidates, not proof of equivalent configurations or performance. A fair comparison needs exact purchasable configurations and matched testing of memory, sustained workload results, compatibility, display, battery, ports, repair access, warranty, price, and availability. The cited announcements do not provide a complete price or configuration matrix or independent retail-unit results.

What a useful test report should include

  • Exact SKU, memory, firmware, Windows build, driver, and whether the unit is preproduction or retail.
  • Workload inputs and settings, application/model versions, power mode, and the conditions used for each comparison.
  • Observed performance alongside memory, power, temperature, and noise measurements where relevant.
  • Failures and compromises as well as successful runs, especially for Arm compatibility and large local models.
  • For display and battery results, the measurement mode or workload and setup—not just a headline number.

Microsoft’s October 7 availability and performance update and RTX Spark platform overview provide the manufacturer’s claims and platform context. They do not replace measurements from the specific laptop and software configuration being reported.
