For a new gaming tower near US$1,000, spend the largest share of the budget on the graphics card. A sensible target is a recent six-core processor, a discrete GPU around the RTX 5060 class or a competitively priced 16GB alternative, 16–32GB of memory, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. Treat 1080p as the safer gaming target; 1440p can work in some games and settings, but no universal frame-rate promise is supported by the available examples.

The figures below are US-dollar parts-shopping examples from 2026, not live quotes. They concern the tower itself; whether your own $1,000 must also cover tax, shipping, an operating system, monitor, or peripherals changes what you can afford.

Which specifications matter most?

For gaming, prioritize the graphics card, then balance the rest of the system so it does not undermine that choice. PCWorld’s general guidance is to give the GPU the largest share of a new build’s budget. The exact balance still depends on the games and resolution you want to play. PCWorld’s February 2026 build discussion and two example builds provide useful reference points, but their listed prices are date-specific.

  • Graphics card: Start with a discrete GPU; compare the current delivered price, VRAM, features, and benchmarks for the games you play.
  • Processor: A modern six-core CPU is a practical target for this budget range.
  • Memory: Aim for 32GB if it fits without forcing a substantially weaker GPU. Treat 16GB as a budget compromise that you may upgrade later.
  • Storage: Plan for at least a 1TB SSD, preferably NVMe, and account for its cost separately from the graphics card.

What graphics card should you target?

Use the GPU as the anchor for the parts list rather than choosing a processor first and spending whatever remains on graphics. The cited 2026 examples point to the RTX 5060 Ti range and the RX 9060 XT as plausible candidates, but they do not establish a universal performance winner.

Tom’s Hardware’s June 24, 2026, 1080p list selected an MSI Ventus GeForce RTX 5060 Ti with 8GB of VRAM and described an RX 9060 XT 16GB as an alternative that cost about $100 more in that dated list. Newegg’s June 12, 2026 guide included either an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or RX 9060 XT in a configuration estimated at approximately $1,095. Those are source-specific examples, not current price quotations. Tom’s Hardware’s dated parts list and Newegg’s 2026 parts guide show the kinds of options considered.

Do not decide on “8GB versus 16GB” alone. VRAM capacity is only one factor; the specific GPU model, price, performance in your games, and settings matter too. More VRAM does not by itself guarantee a particular lifespan or level of performance.

Is 1080p or 1440p the realistic target?

Plan around 1080p as the safer expectation for a roughly $1,000 tower. Tom’s Hardware explicitly presented its example as a 1080p build. Newegg described its approximately $900–$1,000 guide as aimed at 1080p to light 1440p gaming. These descriptions do not promise a particular frame rate across games.

For a 1440p decision, look for benchmarks of the exact GPU in the games you play, at the settings you intend to use. A demanding game at high settings can behave very differently from a lighter title. If 1440p is a priority, compare the GPU’s price and results before finalizing the CPU, memory, and storage allocation.

How much CPU, memory, and storage should you buy?

Processor and motherboard

A modern six-core processor is a reasonable general target. The examples use different platforms: Tom’s Hardware paired an Intel Core i5-12600K with a DDR4 motherboard, while Newegg used an AMD Ryzen 5 9600X with an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory. These are examples, not a claim that one brand or model is always the right choice.

Check the motherboard socket and supported memory generation before buying. A CPU must fit the board’s socket, and the board must support the chosen memory type; parts from different example lists are not automatically compatible.

System memory

Prefer 32GB if the budget allows it without sacrificing too much GPU capability. PCWorld calls 16GB a bare minimum and prefers 32GB; Tom’s Hardware’s example also uses 32GB. If 32GB pushes the tower well over budget, 16GB can be a temporary compromise, provided the motherboard supports a practical upgrade later.

Memory prices can materially change the total. PCWorld’s February 2, 2026 example assigned $312.99 to a 32GB DDR5-5600 kit. BlueScreenBuilds reported March 21, 2026 configuration totals of $1,362–$1,528 with 32GB DDR5-6000, versus $1,072–$1,088 with 16GB. These are historical figures from their listed configurations and prices, not current shopping advice. BlueScreenBuilds’ March 2026 configuration illustrates how much the memory choice can affect a parts list.

SSD storage

A 1TB NVMe SSD is a reasonable baseline, matching the capacity in PCWorld’s target and the Tom’s Hardware and Newegg examples. If you install a large game library, decide whether extra capacity is worth reducing the budget available for the GPU. Capacity and drive price are separate trade-offs; the cited examples do not establish one current SSD price.

How should you choose the power supply and case?

Tom’s Hardware and Newegg each used a 750W power supply in their example builds, but those selections do not make 750W a universal requirement. Check the graphics-card maker’s power recommendation and verify that the specific PSU has suitable quality, connectors, and capacity for the parts you choose.

Also confirm that the graphics card fits the case, that the motherboard form factor is supported, and that the case provides suitable airflow. These checks depend on the actual models, so do not assume that parts from separate example lists will fit or connect without verification.

Can a complete $1,000 build actually stay under budget?

Sometimes the chosen parts, deals, and budget scope make the target possible; a fixed $1,000 ceiling is not assured. PCWorld’s February 2, 2026 parts example totaled $1,178.80 before Pennsylvania sales tax and estimated just under $1,250 including that tax. Newegg’s June 12, 2026 configuration was estimated at approximately $1,095. Each is a dated, source-specific example, not a market-wide statistic or a live quote.

Self-building is not automatically cheaper than buying a prebuilt. PCWorld notes that a large manufacturer may sometimes have inventory acquired at lower prices than an individual buyer can find. Compare complete systems on the same day rather than comparing a prebuilt’s headline price with an incomplete parts subtotal.

What should you compare before buying?

For two candidate builds or a build and a prebuilt, compare the parts and final delivered cost together:

  • GPU model and VRAM, along with benchmarks for your games at your chosen resolution and settings.
  • Current price after shipping and any applicable tax, and whether the quoted budget includes peripherals or an operating system.
  • CPU platform, motherboard socket, memory generation, and realistic upgrade compatibility.
  • Memory capacity and SSD capacity, weighed against the graphics-card performance you would give up to afford them.
  • PSU quality and connectors, case clearance and airflow, warranty, and upgradeability.

The cited guides do not provide one consistent benchmark set for a numeric head-to-head comparison. Use current game-specific results and current delivered prices for the exact parts you are considering.
