If your website has disappeared from Google, first determine whether Google stopped indexing pages or whether your pages remain indexed but have lost clicks for particular searches. Open Google Search Console, compare the affected dates in Performance, then inspect representative URLs with URL Inspection. Check crawling, indexing, server responses, robots.txt, page-level noindex, security issues, manual actions, and any recent migration. Fix the cause you can verify, then monitor the affected URLs. A sitemap submission or indexing request can help Google discover a page, but neither guarantees inclusion, rankings, or a recovery date.
Start by separating deindexing from a traffic decline
“My website is not showing up in Google” can describe several different situations. A site may have pages removed from Google’s index, or its pages may still be indexed but receive fewer impressions and clicks for important queries. The distinction determines what to investigate.
Check the Performance report first
In Search Console, open Performance and set a comparison between the period before the loss and the period after it. Review total clicks, impressions, average position, queries, and pages. A sudden fall across nearly every query and page suggests a broad technical, security, policy, or migration problem. A fall limited to a topic, country, device, or small group of queries may reflect changing demand, seasonality, competition, or a ranking change rather than deindexing.
Use the Pages and Queries tabs to identify the exact URLs and searches affected. Do not conclude that the whole domain is deindexed from an aggregate traffic graph alone. Google identifies technical problems, security incidents, spam-policy issues, changing demand, and site moves as different possible causes of reduced visibility.

Test a representative search
Choose several pages that previously performed well: the home page, a category page, and an article or product page. Search Google for the exact page title or use a site:example.com query as a rough check. These searches are clues, not a complete index audit; URL Inspection is the authoritative diagnostic for each URL you control.
Inspect an affected URL in Search Console
- Open Search Console and select your property.
- Paste one affected URL into the URL Inspection field.
- Read the indexed result, including whether Google has a canonical URL, when it last crawled the page, and any indexing reason shown.
- Choose Test live URL to check the page as it is currently available to Google.
- Confirm that the live test can fetch the page, the server returns HTTP 200, and the rendered page contains the content you expect Google to index.
Google’s technical requirements are crawler access, an HTTP 200 response, and indexable content. Google Search Central states in its Google Search Technical Requirements documentation, updated 2025-12-18 UTC: “Just because a page meets these requirements doesn’t mean that page will be indexed.” Eligibility is therefore a necessary baseline, not a promise of inclusion or ranking.
Inspect more than one URL. If the home page is indexed but dozens of article URLs show the same exclusion reason, investigate a shared template, header, deployment rule, or URL pattern. If only one page fails, focus on that page’s directives, response, canonicalization, and content.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
The table below keeps the diagnosis evidence-led. It does not rank causes by frequency; official Google guidance does not establish a universal frequency order.

| Possible cause | Typical scope | Evidence to check | How it works | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reduced query demand or seasonality | Selected queries, topics, regions, or dates | Performance comparison shows impressions or clicks falling while URLs remain indexed | Fewer people search, or interest shifts | Compare query, country, device, and date dimensions before changing technical settings |
| Robots.txt block | URL paths or sections | URL Inspection and the live page’s crawl information; robots.txt contains a matching disallow rule | Googlebot is prevented from crawling the URL | Remove an unintended rule and allow crawling when the page should be discoverable |
noindex directive |
Individual pages, templates, or response types | Rendered HTML meta robots tag or an X-Robots-Tag HTTP header | Google crawls the page and is told not to include it | Remove the unintended directive; do not block the same URL in robots.txt while trying to make Google see the directive |
| Server availability or error | Outages may affect the whole site; faulty routes affect selected URLs | Crawl Stats, Page Indexing, server logs, and live HTTP response | Google cannot reliably fetch or render the page | Restore availability, correct routing, and verify an HTTP 200 response |
| Security issue | Site-wide or affected hosted resources | Security Issues report and browser or search warnings | Google detects a compromise or harmful behavior and may show warnings or interstitials | Follow the specific remediation steps in the report, then request a security review when offered |
| Manual action | Specified content types, pages, or the entire site | Manual Actions report | A Google reviewer determines that spam-policy rules were violated | Correct the cited violation and submit a reconsideration request through Search Console |
| Site move or URL change | Old URLs, new destinations, or migrated sections | Redirect map, migration date, Page Indexing, and URL Inspection | Google must recrawl redirects and reprocess the new URL signals | Correct redirects, remove migration blocks, update sitemaps, and monitor both old and new URLs |
Remove accidental crawl and indexing blocks
Robots.txt is not a noindex command
Robots.txt controls crawling. A rule such as Disallow: /articles/ can stop Googlebot from fetching pages in that path, but it does not reliably remove already indexed URLs. More importantly, Google must crawl a page to see a page-level noindex directive. Blocking a URL in robots.txt can therefore prevent Google from seeing the very directive you intended it to process. Robots.txt is not a supported substitute for noindex.
Open https://your-domain.example/robots.txt and review rules for the affected path, user-agent, and sitemap declaration. Check for a temporary staging rule left in production, a CMS-generated rule covering the whole site, or a new path name that accidentally matches an old disallow pattern. Remove only the rule that you can verify is unintended; some private or non-search sections should remain blocked.
Check meta robots and HTTP headers
View the rendered HTML of an affected page and search for a meta robots element such as <meta name='robots' content='noindex'>. Also inspect the HTTP response for an X-Robots-Tag: noindex header, which can be added by a server, CDN, application framework, or deployment setting. Remove an unintended directive and deploy the change consistently across the affected template or URL pattern.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not rely on a browser view alone: a page can look normal to you while its response header, authentication requirement, or rendered output prevents Google from indexing it. Re-run the live test in URL Inspection after the change.

Check availability, crawling, and indexing reports
Page Indexing report
Open Page Indexing to see patterns across URLs Google knows about. Separate excluded pages from errors and inspect the example URLs attached to each reason. A single exclusion may be intentional, while the same new exclusion reason appearing across thousands of pages usually points to a shared rule, deployment, canonical setting, or response problem.
Crawl Stats report
Open Crawl Stats and review Googlebot requests, response codes, host status, and any availability problems around the date visibility changed. Correlate those entries with your web-server and CDN logs. Look for spikes in 5xx errors, timeouts, DNS failures, rate limits, or authentication challenges. A successful live test today does not prove the server was available during an earlier outage.
Verify the actual HTTP response
An indexable page should be publicly reachable and return HTTP 200. Check redirects one hop at a time and make sure the final destination is the intended canonical page, not a login screen, error page, or unrelated URL. If your application serves different content to Googlebot, mobile users, or unauthenticated visitors, resolve that inconsistency before requesting another crawl.
Review Security Issues and Manual Actions separately
Security Issues
In Search Console, open Security Issues. A detected compromise, malware infection, phishing page, or harmful download can trigger warnings or interstitials and reduce the practical visibility of otherwise valid pages. Follow the report’s affected examples and remediation guidance: remove the malicious code or content, secure the application and credentials, update vulnerable software, and verify that the warning is gone. A generic SEO change will not repair a security finding.

Manual Actions
Open Manual Actions and look for an explicit notice about spam-policy violations. Do not call a traffic loss a “penalty” without this evidence. If a manual action exists, read its scope and examples, correct the underlying content or links, document the changes, and use the report’s reconsideration process. Ranking may not return immediately after a successful review.
Audit a migration or URL change
If the disappearance followed a redesign, domain change, HTTPS move, CMS replacement, or URL restructuring, treat the migration as the leading line of investigation.
- Build a list of important old URLs and confirm each one redirects with a permanent redirect to the closest equivalent new URL.
- Check that redirects do not form chains or loops and do not send every old page to an irrelevant home page.
- Inspect representative destination URLs with URL Inspection and correct any 404, 5xx, login, canonical, or
noindexproblem. - Remove migration-only robots.txt disallows, password protection, and
noindexdirectives that were used on a staging site. - Update internal links and XML sitemaps so they use the new canonical URLs, not the old addresses.
- Keep the old redirects available long enough for users and search engines to transition, and monitor both old and new URL patterns in Page Indexing.
Google says a medium-sized site may take a few weeks for it to notice a move, while larger sites can take longer. That is a recrawl guideline, not a recovery guarantee. Fluctuations can continue while Google recrawls redirects and reprocesses canonical and content signals.

Use sitemaps and indexing requests correctly
Maintain an XML sitemap containing the canonical, publicly accessible URLs you want discovered. Submit it in Search Console and keep its last-modified information accurate. A sitemap is a discovery hint: submission does not guarantee that Google will download it, crawl every listed URL, index those URLs, or restore rankings.

For a corrected page, use URL Inspection’s Request indexing option when it is available. This communicates that the URL has changed; it does not place the page in a priority queue with a promised deadline. Google says most sites should expect several days or more for new pages to be noticed, and there is no guarantee that a change will produce a noticeable search impact.
Discovery also depends on crawlable internal links. Link important pages from navigational or contextual HTML links that Google can fetch. Do not create thousands of near-duplicate URLs solely to generate sitemap entries or indexing requests.
Monitor after you make a verified fix
Record the change, affected URL pattern, deployment time, and the Search Console evidence that led to it. After Google has had time to recrawl, inspect the same URLs again and compare Page Indexing, Crawl Stats, and Performance data. Look for the specific signal you expected: a cleared exclusion, a successful crawl, removal of a security warning, or impressions returning for the affected query group.
Keep checking server logs for Googlebot responses and watch for the original error returning after a cache purge, plugin update, CDN change, or automated deployment. If only some pages recover, compare their templates, directives, canonical tags, links, and server responses with pages that remain excluded.
What not to do
- Do not submit the same URL repeatedly or resubmit a sitemap expecting to force indexing.
- Do not add
noindexwhile simultaneously blocking the URL in robots.txt; Google needs to crawl the page to see the directive. - Do not assume a traffic graph proves deindexing, or that every decline is a manual penalty.
- Do not delete and recreate URLs before checking redirects, canonical signals, and demand changes.
- Do not promise a client a fixed recovery date. Google’s documentation describes possible causes and diagnostic steps, not a universal restoration formula.
A practical decision path
Begin with Performance to define the loss, then inspect several affected URLs. If URL Inspection shows the pages are indexed, investigate query demand, seasonality, content relevance, and ranking signals rather than treating the issue as deindexing. If they are not indexed, read the exact exclusion reason and verify robots.txt, noindex, HTTP status, rendered content, and canonical behavior. Use Page Indexing and Crawl Stats to identify patterns, Security Issues and Manual Actions to find policy or safety findings, and migration checks when URLs recently changed. Correct the verified cause, refresh discovery signals, and monitor the same evidence after Google recrawls.
