Pause before you trade. A sharp fall is a signal to investigate, not proof that the stock is either a bargain or permanently damaged. Confirm what changed, compare the facts with your original investment thesis, then check your time horizon, cash needs, tolerance for further loss, portfolio concentration, leverage, order mechanics and tax effects. The right action may be to hold, reduce, sell or—only with a newly verified thesis—buy more.
Start with a pause and a fact check
A one-day move cannot tell you why a share price fell. Investor.gov explains that prices can respond to management decisions, product strength, consumer demand, costs, economic conditions and investor preferences, as well as events outside the company’s control. Your first task is to identify which explanation is supported by current information.
- Check the company’s latest regulatory filing, earnings release, guidance update and material-news announcements.
- Look for changes in management, products, demand, costs, debt, cash flow, legal exposure or access to financing.
- Compare the stock’s move with its industry and the broad market. A sector-wide decline points to a different risk than a company-specific warning.
- Use the company’s disclosures and your broker’s notices rather than relying on a chart, social-media post or headline alone.
Do not anchor on your purchase price. The amount you paid is relevant to taxes and your personal record, but it does not determine what the business is worth today or what it will be worth tomorrow.

Decide whether the original investment thesis still works
Write down, in plain language, why you bought the shares: expected growth, income, a valuation gap, diversification or another defined role. Then test that reason against verified developments.

Evidence that may support holding
A fall may be mostly market noise when the company’s operations, balance sheet and outlook remain consistent with your plan and the position still fits your risk limits. That is not a promise of recovery; it is a conclusion that the facts have not invalidated your stated case.
Evidence that may support reducing or selling
Consider reducing exposure when the thesis has weakened, the company’s risks are materially higher, or the position has become too large for your portfolio. Selling can also be appropriate when your objective or cash needs have changed, even if the business remains sound.
Why averaging down is not an automatic solution
Buying more lowers your average purchase price but increases your exposure to the same risk. Add shares only after making a fresh investment case using current information, deciding how large the position should be and confirming that you can tolerate another substantial decline. “It is down” is not an investment thesis.

The appropriate risk level depends on your financial situation, when you need the money and your willingness and ability to withstand losses. Investor.gov gives five years or less as an example of a short-term goal for which risky investments may be unsuitable, because you may have to sell during a downturn instead of waiting for a recovery.

Risk tolerance is both willingness and ability to bear loss. Someone who can psychologically tolerate volatility may still be unable to keep a position if tuition, a tax bill or a mortgage payment is due soon.
Check the holding’s role and your portfolio concentration
Measure the stock as a percentage of your total portfolio and of the relevant account. Also check indirect exposure through funds or other companies in the same industry. A large single-company or single-sector weight can turn one disappointing event into a portfolio-level problem.
Investor.gov describes diversification as spreading investments to reduce risk. Rebalancing brings the portfolio back toward a chosen asset mix; it can involve selling or buying and may create trading costs and taxes. Use a target allocation decided in advance rather than letting the recent price move dictate the entire plan.
- Underweight after the fall: decide whether the lower value now leaves the position below its intended range or whether the underlying risk has increased.
- Still oversized: a lower price does not automatically make concentration acceptable; the position may remain too large relative to your ability to lose.
- Allocation changed across the portfolio: rebalance only after considering fees, taxable gains or losses and the purpose of each account.
Understand margin before deciding anything
If you bought the shares with borrowed money, review the account immediately. The SEC explains that a broker may be entitled to sell securities to meet a maintenance requirement, sometimes without giving you time to choose which holdings are sold. Leveraged losses can exceed the amount you initially invested.

- Read the broker’s current equity, maintenance-margin and margin-call figures.
- Ask the broker what deadline and acceptable payment or collateral apply.
- Do not assume you can wait for a rebound or that the broker will sell the position you prefer.
- If you cannot meet the requirement, obtain qualified financial advice promptly; delaying can reduce your choices.
Never add borrowed funds simply to defend a losing position. Leverage magnifies both the size and the speed of potential losses.
Choose an order type with its limitations in mind

Availability, trigger definitions and handling differ by broker. Read the broker’s order disclosure and confirm whether the order can operate during extended hours, trading halts or corporate actions. An order cannot remove the underlying business risk.
Consider taxes before realizing a loss
For U.S. taxpayers, selling at a loss and quickly buying back can have consequences under the wash-sale rule. IRS Publication 550 generally addresses substantially identical stock or securities acquired within 30 days before or after the loss sale. Its discussion also covers certain acquisitions in an IRA or Roth IRA.
The rule is U.S.-specific; it does not describe tax treatment in other countries. Before trading, determine whether the sale is in a taxable account, whether you or a related account could acquire a substantially identical security, and how your broker will report the transaction. Tax lots, holding periods and capital-loss limits can affect the result, so obtain current professional tax advice when the amount is material.

Use a decision path instead of a prediction
Hold or monitor
This path can fit when verified information leaves the thesis intact, the position size is acceptable, you do not need the money soon and you can withstand further loss. Set specific monitoring conditions—such as a filing, cash-flow measure or guidance change—rather than watching every price tick.
Reduce the position
Partial selling can lower concentration or volatility while preserving some exposure. Define the target size and execute with awareness of taxes, fees and order mechanics. Reducing is not a forecast that the price must keep falling; it is risk control when the position no longer fits.
Exit
An exit may be appropriate when the thesis is broken, new information makes the risk unacceptable, the investment no longer serves your goal or you need the cash. Document the reason so a later decision is based on evidence rather than regret about the sale price.

Buy more
Additional buying requires the strongest evidence: a current thesis, a valuation and risk assessment you can defend, a defined maximum position and enough financial capacity for another loss. A lower quote by itself supplies none of those.

Special situations that need prompt attention
Possible fraud or misleading disclosure
Preserve statements, trade confirmations and company communications. Stop relying on informal claims and contact your broker and an appropriately qualified professional about available reporting or recovery steps.
Trading halt or suspension
You may be unable to exit even if you decide to sell. Read the exchange and company notices, confirm whether your order remains active and ask the broker how it handles a reopening or cancellation.
Bankruptcy or insolvency
Common shareholders are last in line in a liquidation and may receive nothing. A low price is not evidence that equity will recover; review the company’s formal filings and court or restructuring notices.

Tell your broker or financial professional that the deadline is real. A forced sale can produce a poor price, but missing a critical obligation can be more damaging than realizing a loss.
A practical checklist before you place an order
- Record the date, size and percentage decline without treating the percentage as a diagnosis.
- Identify whether the catalyst is company-specific, industry-wide or broader-market.
- Read the latest reliable disclosure and write down what changed.
- State whether your original thesis is intact, weakened or broken—and why.
- Check the position’s percentage of the portfolio and your target range.
- Confirm when the money is needed and the maximum additional loss you can bear.
- Review margin status, maintenance requirements and possible forced-sale rules.
- Select an order type only after understanding execution and non-execution risks.
- For a U.S. taxable account, check wash-sale and other tax effects before selling.
- Record the decision, the evidence supporting it and the condition that would make you reassess.
When to get professional help
General education cannot determine the right action for your account. Ask a qualified financial professional for help assessing risk tolerance if you cannot translate your goals and cash needs into a suitable allocation. Contact the broker promptly for a margin call, trading restriction or order question, and consult a tax professional for a significant loss or possible wash sale. A professional cannot guarantee a recovery, but can help you evaluate constraints that a price chart cannot show.
Lori Schock, then Director of the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy, captured the discipline required in volatile markets: “But it is important not to make any rash decisions during volatile markets.” She is described as a former director on the Investor.gov material; the quotation should not be read as a prediction about any particular stock.
What a falling stock can—and cannot—tell you
The fall tells you that the market’s current price is lower. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the company is temporarily out of favor, facing a lasting deterioration, or being repriced for risks you have not yet considered. A sound response connects verified facts to your thesis, personal deadline, portfolio design and trading consequences. That process gives you a reasoned choice without assuming that every decline deserves a rescue purchase or an immediate sale.
