Before renewing a sponsorship, ask whether the partnership delivered the objectives agreed at the start, what it contributed beyond exposure, whether the total investment beat realistic alternatives, which rights actually worked, and whether the property will share data and improve the deal. The decision should end in one of four outcomes: renew, renegotiate or redesign, redirect the budget, or walk away.
Use the same objectives, cost assumptions and evidence standards for every option. As Megan McGinnis wrote in IEG’s October 21, 2025 renewal guidance, “Sponsorship renewal decisions should never rely on instinct alone.”
1. Did the sponsorship meet its original objectives?
Start with the business case approved before the deal began, not with a highlight reel or a favorable media report. Renewal is an assessment against intended outcomes. Reconfirm the objective, the KPI, the baseline, the observed result and the business implication in one working document.

The Sponsorship Effectiveness Forum (SEF) recommends integrating sponsorship objectives with wider business goals, then defining KPIs and baselines before measurement begins. Its Sponsorship Measurement: A Best Practice Guide also recommends incrementality testing, triangulated evidence and profit-based return on investment (ROI).

Questions for the internal team
- What business problem was the sponsorship meant to solve?
- Which objectives were formally approved, and which were added informally during the term?
- What baseline existed before activation?
- Were the objectives achieved, partly achieved or missed?
- Do those objectives still matter to the company’s current strategy?
Separate a changed strategy from a failed partnership. An objective can become less important even when delivery was strong; conversely, a property can remain strategically important while missing a target that was unrealistic or poorly activated.
2. What changed in brand and business outcomes?
Exposure is an input, not a complete business case. Ask what changed in the measures that mattered for the original objective: awareness, consideration, attitudes, brand preference, purchase-funnel progression, leads, sales or another defined outcome.
The Marketing Accountability Standards Board (MASB) describes a measurement progression from impressions and media equivalency, through return-on-objective measures such as awareness, attitudes and preference, to financial attribution compared with other investments. The progression does not mean every sponsorship can be assigned a precise revenue number; it means the measurement level should match the decision and the available evidence. See the MASB Sponsorship Accountability Metrics project.

Build an outcome chain
- Reach and exposure: document delivered audience, frequency, prominence and any verified media value.
- Response: measure whether the audience noticed the sponsorship and whether attitudes or brand associations moved.
- Behavior: examine consideration, site actions, leads, trial, purchase or retention where those outcomes were part of the plan.
- Financial contribution: estimate incremental profit or other financial value only when the design and data support it.
Do not present a media-equivalency figure as sales, or an association between sponsorship awareness and purchase as proof that the sponsorship caused the purchase.
3. How strong is the evidence that the sponsorship contributed?
A renewal review should state who produced each result, how data were collected, what comparison exists and what other activity could explain the movement. Ask for the methodology, sample, timing, audience definition and limitations, not only the headline percentage.

Useful comparison designs
- Pre/post measurement: compare brand or funnel measures before and after the sponsorship, using the same definitions where possible.
- Aware versus unaware audiences: compare people who recognized the sponsorship with those who did not, while acknowledging that more engaged people may also be more likely to notice it.
- Geographic or audience holdouts: where practical, compare exposed and less-exposed groups that are similar on important characteristics.
- Time-series or market tests: examine whether changes coincide with activation periods and differ from markets or periods without the intervention.
- Evidence triangulation: connect delivery data, primary research, behavioral data and financial outcomes instead of relying on one source.
IEG discusses pre/post measures and aware-versus-unaware comparisons in its in-deal measurement guidance. SEF’s framework likewise emphasizes incrementality tests proportionate to the budget and a chain of evidence from exposure to value. These approaches strengthen an inference; they are not causal proof unless the study design supports a causal conclusion.
4. Was the total investment worthwhile?
Calculate the full cost of the partnership. Include the rights fee, activation and production, media support, hospitality, travel, agency or research costs, and the internal time required to use the rights. Compare that total with delivered value and with realistic alternative uses of the budget.

Assess three kinds of value together
- Value for money: Did the delivered rights and audience justify the total spend against an independent or otherwise credible valuation?
- Value for the brand: Did the partnership strengthen the intended associations, preference or positioning with the right audience?
- Value for the business: Did it contribute to measurable commercial outcomes or a defensible profit-based ROI?
IEG’s renewal framework combines independent valuation with primary market research and warns that a favorable fee cannot rescue an ineffective asset mix. A low rights fee may still be poor value if the audience is wrong or the company lacks the resources to activate the package. Conversely, a high fee can be rational when the rights are scarce, strategically important and demonstrably productive.
Include opportunity cost
Model what the same budget could accomplish through another property, channel or marketing program. Use comparable assumptions for activation, measurement and internal resources. A renewal that looks acceptable in isolation may be inferior once the best alternative is included.
5. Which rights and activations should change?
Review the package at asset level rather than judging only the total rights fee. For every major right or activation, record what was promised, what was delivered, whether the company used it, who saw it, what outcome it supported, and what it cost to activate.

Asset-level questions
- Was the inventory delivered in the contracted quantity, placement and timing?
- Did the audience match the priority segment and geography?
- Was the asset distinctive enough to be noticed and linked to the brand?
- Did creative and activation turn the right into a meaningful consumer experience?
- What evidence connects that asset to an objective?
- Was the right underused because of the property, the contract or our own operating constraints?
Ask the property for a proposed package tied to next term’s objectives, not an automatic rollover. Exchange or remove underperforming inventory, reallocate value to higher-performing rights, increase activation where evidence supports it, and revise creative when the problem is execution rather than the property itself. IEG addresses this optimization process in its renewal guidance.

Measurement should be a renewal term, not a favor requested after signing. Ask whether the property will provide delivery and audience data, support agreed research, participate in periodic reviews and adjust inventory when evidence identifies a shortfall.
Put these items in the contract
- Definitions for impressions, reach, attendance, engagement, qualified leads and other reported measures.
- Data sources, methodology, reporting format and delivery dates.
- Access to audiences or environments needed for brand-lift or incrementality research.
- Responsibilities and cost allocation for research, verification and independent measurement.
- Service levels or make-goods for missed delivery.
- Quarterly or milestone reviews with a documented optimization process.
- Rights to use anonymized data for internal analysis and auditing.
An ANA summary of a 2018 ANA/MASB survey reported that 40 percent of respondents wrote sponsorship measurement expectations into property contracts. The same July 10, 2018 summary said 37 percent reported having a standardized process for measuring sponsorship return, while 78 percent said the need for validated results had increased in importance. These are historical, self-reported survey findings, not current market-wide rates, but they show why explicit measurement language can differentiate a disciplined renewal from a verbal promise. ANA President and CEO Bob Liodice said in that report, “It’s time for the industry to substantially upgrade sponsorship accountability, and this report is a material step in the right direction.” Read the ANA/MASB survey summary.
7. Is the property willing to collaborate?
A strong renewal partner treats measurement as joint stewardship. Ask directly:
- Will the property share complete delivery records, including make-goods and substitutions?
- Can it provide audience information at the level needed to assess fit without violating privacy rules?
- Will it join regular performance reviews with decision-makers from both organizations?
- What changes will it make if a right misses its objective?
- Can it test new activation ideas and document the results?
Look for specific commitments, owners and dates. “We will provide support” is not an operating plan. The MASB roadmap, published in 2024, covers strategy and brand fit, business cases, contractual considerations, activation and stewardship, measurement, esports and name-image-likeness programs. Its project page provides that broader accountability context.

8. Compare the real alternatives
Renewal is not the default. Compare at least four scenarios using the same objectives, cost assumptions and evidence rules.
| Scenario | When it fits | Conditions to require |
|---|---|---|
| Renew as-is | Objectives were met, assets fit the audience and evidence supports continued value. | Maintain reporting and review terms; do not waive measurement because the prior term went well. |
| Renegotiate or redesign | The property is strategically useful but specific rights, activation or delivery underperformed. | Change the asset mix, activation, creative, price or measurement obligations. |
| Redirect the budget | Another property or channel can serve the same objectives with stronger expected value. | Use comparable total-cost and evidence assumptions when modeling the alternative. |
| Walk away | Objectives no longer matter, contribution is weak, or the property will not provide necessary transparency or flexibility. | Document the unresolved risk and any transition plan for audiences, hospitality or campaigns. |
Score each option on contribution to the same business objectives, total cost, measurement strength and independence, audience and brand fit, asset delivery and flexibility, opportunity cost, and the partner’s willingness to report and adapt. If evidence is incomplete, state the uncertainty and make renewal conditional on measurable commitments rather than turning a weak estimate into a firm ROI number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. A practical renewal-review process
- Freeze the baseline: collect the original business case, objectives, KPIs, costs, audience definitions and pre-deal measures.
- Reconcile delivery: match contracted rights to verified delivery, substitutions, make-goods and actual usage.
- Assemble the evidence chain: combine exposure, research, behavioral and financial data; document methods and limitations.
- Calculate total economics: include rights, activation and internal resources, then compare value for money, brand and business.
- Diagnose assets: identify which rights drove results, which failed and whether the cause was fit, execution, activation or measurement.
- Model alternatives: cost a redesigned renewal, another property or channel, and exit using consistent assumptions.
- Set negotiation conditions: write the required price, asset changes, data access, review dates and remedies before meeting the rights holder.
- Choose and document the decision: record the evidence, uncertainty, owner and next review milestone for the selected scenario.
10. Common renewal mistakes and how to correct them
Counting impressions as impact
Correction: connect exposure to an objective such as awareness, preference, leads or profit, and identify the comparison used to estimate incrementality.
Judging the package by the rights fee alone
Correction: add activation and internal costs, then test opportunity cost and asset utilization.
Accepting a single vendor-produced number
Correction: request methodology, independent validation where practical and triangulation with primary research or behavioral data.

Leaving measurement out of the contract
Correction: define data, access, timing, responsibilities, make-goods and review procedures before signature.
Treating uncertainty as a reason to do nothing
Correction: make the renewal conditional, stage the investment or set a review gate tied to specific evidence instead of claiming certainty that the study cannot provide.
