Deadweight tonnage (DWT) is a ship’s weight-carrying capacity at a stated draught, not its enclosed volume or cargo allowance alone. Delivery dates mark different construction and handover events, while a “delivery window” gets its meaning from the shipbuilding contract and the regulatory context. Classification records whether a vessel meets a classification society’s technical rules after survey; it is separate from flag-state registration and statutory certificates.

The three terms at a glance

Term What it measures or records What it does not establish by itself
Deadweight tonnage (DWT) Total weight the ship can carry at a specified loading condition, including cargo, fuel, stores and other carried weights. It is not a volume measurement, gross tonnage, or the cargo payload available after all other weights are loaded.
Delivery date A milestone such as transfer from builder to owner, or—in a specifically defined convention—the date tied to completion of an initial statutory survey. It is not automatically the same as contract signing, keel laying, launching, or the date a ship begins commercial service.
Delivery window A contract-defined target period or range in which delivery is expected or permitted. There is no universal industry-wide duration, extension rule, acceptance test, or remedy for every shipbuilding contract.
Classification A society’s technical-rule and survey status, including the society, class status and notation. It does not, by itself, prove flag-state registration, every statutory certificate, or unrestricted operational fitness.

These distinctions matter because maritime records often place several dates, tonnage figures and certificates next to one another. Reading one field as if it answered a different question can produce a wrong estimate of capacity, schedule or regulatory status.

Deadweight tonnage: a weight capacity tied to draught

What DWT means

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) defines actual ship deadweight tonnage as the difference between the ship’s displacement in water of specific gravity 1.025 at its actual draught and the ship’s lightweight. In practical terms, it is the total weight available for everything carried by the vessel above its own light condition at that loading state.

“Lightweight” means the ship in its ready, empty condition as defined for the applicable measurement. Displacement is the weight of water displaced by the ship. Subtracting lightweight from displacement therefore leaves the weight that can be loaded while the ship is at the stated draught.

Actual DWT versus maximum DWT

Two figures can legitimately appear for the same vessel because they use different draught bases:

Figure Basis How to read it
Actual deadweight Displacement at the ship’s actual draught in water of specific gravity 1.025, minus lightweight. A condition-specific value. It changes when the recorded draught or loading condition changes.
Maximum deadweight Displacement at a specified maximum or reference draught, minus lightweight. A limit or reference capacity tied to that stated draught, not a promise that the ship always sails at it.

When quoting a DWT number, retain the draught basis. “The vessel is 50,000 DWT” is incomplete if the record does not say whether the number is actual DWT at a particular condition or maximum DWT at a specified draught.

What is included in deadweight

IMO’s plain-language glossary describes deadweight as covering cargo, bunkers and stores. It also includes other carried weights such as provisions, fresh water, lubricants, crew effects and, where applicable, passengers and their effects. The exact loading inventory depends on the ship and the calculation convention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consequently, DWT is not the same as cargo payload. A ship with a 10,000-tonne deadweight figure cannot automatically load 10,000 tonnes of cargo: fuel, water, stores and other operating weights use part of that capacity. Cargo intake must be calculated from the vessel’s loading condition, draft and stability limits, together with the voyage’s fuel and stores requirements.

DWT is not gross tonnage

Gross tonnage is a separate tonnage measure shown in IMO ship records. It is based on the enclosed volume of a vessel under the applicable tonnage convention, whereas DWT is a weight-capacity calculation. Neither number can be substituted for the other, and neither should be used as a cargo figure without the relevant ship-specific data.

How to read a DWT entry correctly

  1. Identify the label. Check whether the record says actual deadweight, maximum deadweight, summer deadweight or another draught-specific term.
  2. Find the draught basis. Note the actual or specified maximum draught and the water-density basis if supplied.
  3. Check the date and condition. A registry entry may describe a particular survey or loading state rather than every voyage.
  4. Keep cargo separate. Look for a loading manual, cargo deadweight allocation or operator figure before treating any part of DWT as available cargo.
  5. Compare like with like. Compare vessels only when their DWT figures use comparable draught and measurement conventions.

Construction and delivery dates are different milestones

Building contract date

The IMO Compendium defines the ship building contract date as the date on which the building contract is placed between the shipbuilder and ship owner. It is the commercial starting point for the ordered newbuilding, not evidence that steel has been cut or that construction has begun.

Keel-laying date

Keel laying is the date the keel is laid, or when the ship reaches a similar stage of construction under the applicable registry definition. Modern modular construction can make a traditional keel-laying ceremony less representative of physical progress, which is why records may use the “similar stage” wording.

Scheduled delivery date

A scheduled delivery date is a planning target. BIMCO’s SHIPTERM S sample ship-information schedule includes a field called “Scheduled delivery date.” That field identifies the date being planned; it does not, by itself, state the contractual consequences of missing it.

Delivery from builder to owner

For ordinary IMO registry purposes, the ship delivery date is the date of delivery from builder to owner. Handover may be conditional on completed trials, documentation, class and statutory certificates, payment and formal acceptance. The registry milestone should therefore be distinguished from launch, sea trials and the date the vessel enters service.

Milestone Who or what it describes Why it should not be conflated with another date
Contract placed Builder and owner enter the construction agreement. No physical construction milestone is implied.
Keel laid or equivalent stage Construction reaches the registry’s defined keel-laying stage. It is earlier than owner handover and may not coincide with launch.
Scheduled delivery A planned date recorded in a schedule or contract. It can move under agreed extensions or revised schedules.
Delivery from builder to owner The contractual or registry handover milestone. It is distinct from the date on which a statutory convention treats the ship as “delivered.”

What a “delivery window” means

A delivery window is best understood as a contract-specific period during which the builder is expected or allowed to deliver the vessel. The sources do not establish one standard width for such a window. One agreement might use a single scheduled date; another might define an earliest and latest date, a cancelling date, or a period that changes when specified events occur.

Clauses that determine the practical meaning

Read the shipbuilding contract rather than assuming that “window” has a standard legal effect. Relevant provisions may include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Earliest and latest dates: the dates between which delivery is permitted or expected.
  • Extension events: defined delays such as extraordinary weather, government action, strikes, supplier failures or other events listed in the agreement.
  • Notice and evidence: deadlines and documents the builder must provide to claim an extension.
  • Trials and acceptance: performance tests, classification, documentation and owner inspection requirements that must be completed before handover.
  • Remedies: liquidated damages, price adjustments, cancellation or other consequences for late delivery.

BIMCO identifies NEWBUILDCON as a standard shipbuilding-contract resource, with the latest edition identified on its page as 2007. A standard-form resource can provide drafting structure, but it does not make every clause universal, nor does it turn a scheduled date into a guaranteed handover date.

Commercial delivery versus regulatory “delivery”

The word delivery can have a narrower regulatory meaning for a particular rule. The Croatian Register of Shipping’s Part 1, Chapter 1 classification rules, January 2026 edition, state that for determining when certain mandatory SOLAS and MARPOL requirements apply, “delivery” means completion of the initial survey on which the certificate is based, as entered on the statutory certificate.

That is a scoped convention for the specified SOLAS and MARPOL application. It should not replace the ordinary builder-to-owner delivery date in a registry or contract, and it should not be generalized to every society, flag or commercial agreement. When a rule’s effective date matters, identify the exact convention, certificate and governing rule.

Classification: technical rules, surveys and status

What a classification society does

A classification society publishes technical rules and surveys ships to assess compliance with the applicable class requirements. The IMO registry fields distinguish the society’s name, the vessel’s class status and its class notation. Those are separate pieces of information, not interchangeable labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) explains: Ship Classification is important as it establishes minimum technical standards designed to improve maritime safety and protect lives of seafarers throughout its lifecycle. A class certificate is an attestation that the vessel complied with the society’s applicable rules following the society’s attendance and survey.

Society, status and notation

Record element Question it answers What to verify
Classification society Which organization applied the class rules and conducted the relevant surveys? The society named in the registry or certificate and the scope of its involvement.
Class status Is class maintained, suspended or withdrawn? The current status date and any conditions or outstanding recommendations.
Class notation What technical features, service limits or special arrangements are recorded? The society’s notation guide and the exact notation assigned to this vessel.

A notation is a technical designation whose meaning comes from that society’s rules. Without the notation text and the edition of the rules, it is unsafe to infer a vessel’s equipment, route, cargo or operating permission from the notation’s abbreviation alone.

Class is not the same as statutory certification

Classification should not be presented as equivalent to flag-state registration or to every statutory safety and environmental certificate. A flag administration, or a recognized organization acting on its behalf, issues or oversees statutory documents under conventions such as SOLAS and MARPOL. Class work may support that process, but a class entry alone does not establish that all statutory certificates are valid, that the vessel is registered under a particular flag, or that it is fit for every operation.

When evaluating a vessel, read the class certificate and the relevant statutory certificates separately. Check issuing authority, certificate number, issue and expiry dates, survey status, and any conditions of class or operation.

Which date controls a rule?

There is no single “ship date” for every legal or technical question. The controlling date depends on the rule being applied. The Croatian Register’s January 2026 rules generally anchor newbuilding class assignment to the contract-for-construction date, while using the distinct initial-survey completion convention described above for certain SOLAS and MARPOL requirements.

For a compliance decision, identify four things before calculating an effective date:

  • The convention, statute or class rule being applied.
  • The edition and effective date of that rule.
  • The vessel’s contract-for-construction, keel-laying or delivery record, as required by the rule.
  • The certificate or registry entry that documents the relevant event.

A practical method for interpreting a ship record

  1. Start with the field name. “Maximum DWT,” “scheduled delivery” and “class status” answer different questions.
  2. Capture qualifications immediately. Record draught, date, water-density basis, rule edition, certificate issuer and status alongside the number or date.
  3. Separate commercial and regulatory documents. Use the construction contract for delivery rights and remedies; use the applicable convention and statutory certificate for regulatory effective dates.
  4. Check the class details. Confirm the society, maintained/suspended/withdrawn status and full notation instead of relying on a short abbreviation.
  5. Do not infer missing facts. If a record does not state the delivery-window length, cargo allocation or statutory certificate status, mark that item as not stated and obtain the governing document.

Reader checklist

  • DWT: Is the figure actual or maximum, and what draught does it use?
  • Capacity: Have fuel, stores, water and other carried weights been deducted before calling the remainder cargo?
  • Dates: Are you looking at contract placement, keel laying, scheduled delivery or builder-to-owner delivery?
  • Window: What does the contract say about earliest/latest dates, extensions, trials, acceptance and remedies?
  • Regulation: Does the applicable convention define delivery through a certificate event rather than commercial handover?
  • Class: Which society is named, is class maintained, and what does the notation mean under that society’s rules?
  • Statutory documents: Which flag-state or recognized-organization certificates must be checked separately?
