Save Sheet Metal for Outpost construction rather than treating it as disposable loot. The current item reference lists it as a basic crafting material used for Outpost furniture and specifies 5× Sheet Metal for the Outpost Stage 2 project. A PC Gamer guide published October 9, 2026, also lists Sheet Metal as a requirement for the Sheltered Retreat project, which follows the Ruined Homestead photography objective.
You can obtain it by scavenging, with technological and industrial areas offering better odds according to that guide, or by buying it from Celeste. Because project requirements, trader inventories and loot tables can change, confirm the live requirement in your current crafting and project screens before spending or recycling a large reserve.
Sheet Metal uses at a glance
| Use | What is currently established |
|---|---|
| Outpost Stage 2 | Requires 5× Sheet Metal, according to the community item reference. |
| Outpost furniture | The item reference classifies Sheet Metal as a basic crafting material used to construct Outpost furniture. |
Those are the clearest documented uses. Sheltered Retreat is another current project that needs Sheet Metal, but the guide naming it does not publish a quantity. Treat the project requirement as current guidance, not as a permanent game rule.

What to save Sheet Metal for
Outpost Stage 2
The most concrete reservation target is Outpost Stage 2: set aside five pieces before you sell, recycle or commit your spare materials elsewhere. The five-piece figure comes from a community-maintained item listing, so check the project panel in your build before making a final decision after an update.

Stage 2 is also the practical reason to avoid spending every piece as soon as you find it. Sheet Metal is described as a common, basic material, but a common item can still become a bottleneck when several projects draw from the same stash. Keep the five-piece requirement separate from your general crafting budget so a low-stock run does not delay the upgrade.
Outpost furniture
The same item reference identifies Sheet Metal as a component for Outpost furniture. It does not provide a complete furniture-by-furniture cost list in the available item details. Open each furniture recipe in your own Outpost and read the displayed cost rather than assuming every object uses the same amount.
Sheltered Retreat
The October 9, 2026 PC Gamer guide lists Sheet Metal among the materials for the Sheltered Retreat project. It places that project after you photograph the Ruined Homestead, so players approaching that objective should keep newly collected Sheet Metal instead of converting it immediately into optional construction.

Does Sheet Metal unlock a quest?
The current community item reference lists no quests requiring Sheet Metal. That is a time-sensitive listing, not a promise that future missions will never use it. A patch can add a quest requirement without changing the item’s name or appearance, so recheck the quest and project panels after major updates.
How to get Sheet Metal
Buy it from Celeste
Celeste is an in-game purchase source identified by the October 9, 2026 guide. Her stock can be the quickest way to close a small shortfall when you are one or two pieces below a project requirement. Check the current price and stock in her shop each time; the available material and cost are live-game details rather than values established by the guide.
Scavenge technological areas
The guide says Sheet Metal is more likely to appear in technological areas. These are higher-probability search zones, not guaranteed spawn locations. Search containers and loot points systematically, but do not abandon a run solely because it does not contain a named technology site.
Scavenge industrial areas
Industrial areas are also described as better sources. Use the same probability rule: the area increases your chances, but it does not guarantee a piece in a particular container or match. If the route is dangerous or expensive, compare the risk of another scavenging run with the convenience of buying the missing amount from Celeste.

Search elsewhere when the route is convenient
The guide explicitly allows that Sheet Metal can appear outside technological and industrial areas. Pick it up during ordinary runs when the opportunity is safe. A lower-probability location can still be worthwhile if it is on your route and costs no extra detour.
Inventory facts and what they mean
The community item page labels Sheet Metal a common basic material and reports a stack size of 50. A 50-item stack lets you consolidate a substantial reserve in one slot, but it does not change the amount a project consumes. Keep the project target visible and avoid assuming that a full stack is required for any particular upgrade.
The same listing names scavenging and Celeste as sources. It does not list a recycling or salvaging route for obtaining Sheet Metal. Do not plan on recovering it from another item unless the current in-game details explicitly show that option.

- Open the field-crafting or construction interface. Go to the screen where available recipes and project requirements are displayed.
- Filter for recipes buildable with your current materials. The crafting interface can filter items that are currently buildable, which helps reveal whether your Sheet Metal reserve is enough for a recipe.
- Open the recipe or project details. Read the exact Sheet Metal quantity shown for Outpost Stage 2, Sheltered Retreat or the furniture item you are considering.
- Compare the requirement with your inventory before committing. Count the pieces required by planned projects, not just the amount needed for the next click.
- Use the item-details screen before recycling. Embark’s help explains that an item can be opened in its details to choose Recycle. If the screen offers that action for Sheet Metal, verify that you no longer need the material for a displayed project before selecting it.
The official help explains how to inspect recipes and recycling, but it does not itself document Sheet Metal’s project costs. Use it as the verification route; use the live project cards for the item-specific numbers.
A practical saving plan
Before Outpost Stage 2
- Reserve at least the displayed 5× requirement.
- Check whether a furniture recipe you want to build draws from the same reserve.
- Do not recycle the reserved pieces simply because no current quest lists them.
After the Ruined Homestead photograph
- Open Sheltered Retreat and read its current Sheet Metal requirement.
- Add that amount to the Outpost Stage 2 reserve if Stage 2 is unfinished.
- Only spend the remainder on optional furniture after both project cards are covered.
When you are short by a few pieces
- Check Celeste first if her shop is available and the purchase is worth the cost.
- Otherwise route a scavenging run through a technological or industrial area.
- Pick up Sheet Metal in other areas when it is on your path, but do not treat those areas as guaranteed sources.
Common mistakes and fixes
Mistake: treating “common” as “unlimited”
Common describes the item’s classification, not a promise that every run will produce enough for your next project. Fix: keep the project quantity reserved and replenish during normal scavenging.
Mistake: assuming every industrial container has Sheet Metal
Industrial and technological areas are higher-probability locations according to the guide, not fixed spawn points. Fix: search the whole area and accept that a particular run may yield none.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistake: spending the reserve on furniture first
Furniture is a documented use, but Outpost Stage 2 has the clearest numeric requirement. Fix: satisfy the five-piece Stage 2 target and the live Sheltered Retreat requirement before optional furnishings.

Mistake: relying on an old item page after an update
Community listings can lag behind patches, and the no-quest status can change. Fix: inspect the current project, quest and recipe panels whenever the game updates.
Mistake: looking for a salvage conversion that is not listed
The item reference reports no recycling or salvaging route for Sheet Metal. Fix: use scavenging or Celeste unless your current item details explicitly add another source.

| You have fewer than 5 pieces and Outpost Stage 2 is incomplete | Keep every piece until the project is funded. |
| You have the Stage 2 reserve but Sheltered Retreat is active | Open Sheltered Retreat and reserve its displayed amount next. |
| You are short after both project cards are visible | Check Celeste, then target technological or industrial scavenging areas. |
| All displayed projects and planned furniture are funded | Use surplus only after confirming the current interface shows no higher-priority requirement. |
What is certain and what can change
The five-piece Outpost Stage 2 figure, the basic-material classification and the 50-item stack size come from a community-maintained item reference. The Sheltered Retreat association and the Celeste, technological-area and industrial-area guidance come from a PC Gamer guide dated October 9, 2026. Embark’s field-crafting help confirms the interface method for checking recipes and item details, not the specific Sheet Metal costs.
