A serverless cold start is the delay while a cloud platform creates or restores an execution environment, starts the runtime, and runs your application’s initialization before it can handle a request. Warm invocations reuse an already initialized environment when one is available, so they usually begin faster. The delay is not added to every invocation, and it is not evidence that your function always starts from scratch.

What a cold start actually is

“Serverless” means your team does not manage the underlying servers directly. The provider still has to allocate capacity, start a runtime, load your code, and make scaling decisions. A cold start is the startup latency visible to your request when the provider cannot route it to an already initialized execution environment.

The usual sequence is:

  1. A request arrives.
  2. The platform decides whether an existing environment can serve it. If not, it prepares another one.
  3. The environment and language runtime start.
  4. Your application’s static or global initialization runs. This can include imports, configuration loading, SDK setup, and network or database connections.
  5. The handler begins processing the request.

After an invocation finishes, the provider may retain that environment for reuse. A later request handled there is a warm invocation and typically avoids most of the startup work. Reuse is opportunistic: providers do not promise a fixed warm lifetime, and an environment can be recycled at any time.

A cold start is therefore a latency event, not a mysterious failure. “Shiver” describes the occasional spike before handler execution; it does not mean every call is slow.

Why a function can be cold even after recent traffic

Recent use does not guarantee that the next request finds a ready environment. A sudden burst can require several environments at once. One warm environment may serve one request while concurrent requests trigger scale-out and additional environments must initialize. Deployments, platform maintenance, resource pressure, and provider scheduling can also change which environments are available.

Idle behavior and scaling rules differ by provider, runtime, region, and plan. There is no reliable cross-provider rule such as “a function always goes cold after five minutes,” nor is there one universal concurrency threshold. Treat any idle timeout observed in a particular experiment as an implementation detail, not a contract.

What happens during AWS Lambda initialization

AWS describes Lambda as downloading code, starting the execution environment, and running initialization code outside the handler. That initialization phase can include imports, configuration, and connection setup. Once it completes, the handler runs. Lambda may keep the environment for another invocation, but reuse is not guaranteed.

AWS documentation gives a provider-specific rule of thumb: cold starts typically occur in under 1% of invocations, with durations ranging from under 100 milliseconds to more than one second. This is AWS’s description of Lambda, not an industry-wide rate or a promise for a particular function. Runtime, package, region, traffic shape, and initialization work all affect the result.

What makes cold starts longer

Package and dependency size

More code and larger dependency trees take longer to transfer, unpack, and load. A framework that imports many modules at startup can add delay even when the request uses only a small part of it. Native extensions and large language runtimes can add their own loading work.

Eager application initialization

Code that runs before the handler—configuration parsing, framework bootstrapping, schema construction, or cache creation—extends the cold path. Work needed only by an uncommon route is especially costly when it is performed for every new environment.

Connections and external resources

Opening a database connection, creating a client for an API, loading credentials, or negotiating a network connection can dominate startup. These operations may also fail independently of the function runtime, making a cold request look like an application error rather than a latency problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Scale-out

More simultaneous requests mean more environments. Even if one environment is warm, newly created environments must repeat the initialization sequence. Tail latency is therefore often more sensitive to bursts than to average request volume.

How to tell whether cold starts are hurting you

Measure the phases instead of labeling every slow request a cold start. A slow downstream query, DNS lookup, database handshake, or handler computation can affect end-to-end latency without any new environment being created.

  1. Record request latency distributions. Track median, p95, and p99 rather than only an average. Cold starts are infrequent, so an average can hide their effect.
  2. Correlate platform initialization data. Use the provider’s logs, metrics, or tracing fields that identify initialization time when available. AWS Lambda reports initialization separately in its execution reporting.
  3. Compare initialization and handler duration. A long initialization phase points toward package, import, setup, or connection work. A short initialization phase followed by a long handler points elsewhere.
  4. Check concurrency and deployment events. Spikes in concurrent executions, new versions, or scaling activity can explain why additional environments appeared.
  5. Repeat in the production region and runtime. A local test or a different region can have a different startup profile.

Do not infer that every p95 or p99 outlier is a cold start unless the platform evidence and timing line up. A useful dashboard separates cold and warm distributions when the provider exposes that distinction.

Reduce startup work in your code

Import only what the function uses

Remove unused packages and import only the modules or SDK components required by the handler. Smaller dependency graphs reduce loading and initialization work. This is often the least risky first optimization because it does not change capacity or billing settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep global initialization focused

Initialize what the first request genuinely needs. Avoid loading every feature, route, schema, or client when a function serves only a subset of them. Google’s Cloud Run functions guidance similarly warns that slow global initialization increases cold-start latency and recommends doing only necessary work at load time.

Initialize optional capabilities lazily

Create an optional client or load a rarely used library on the code path that needs it rather than during environment startup. This shortens the common cold path, but the first request that exercises that capability will pay its setup cost. Use this trade-off when the optional path is uncommon or when common-request latency matters more than that path’s first-request latency.

Reuse safe clients and connections

Objects created during initialization can often be reused by later invocations in the same environment. Reuse can avoid repeated handshakes and connection setup. Add defensive checks because environments can disappear, connections can expire, and a reused client must be safe for concurrent or sequential use under your runtime’s execution model.

Move nonessential work out of the request path

Do not fetch data, build large caches, or perform migrations during startup unless the first request truly requires it. If the work can be prepared asynchronously or on demand, moving it out of initialization reduces the time before the handler is ready.

Provider controls for latency-sensitive workloads

When code-level reductions are not enough, providers offer ways to keep capacity ready or shorten environment creation. These controls change cost, deployment, or operational behavior, so select them against a measured latency target.

Platform control What it does Important qualification
AWS Lambda provisioned concurrency Pre-initializes environments for a published version or alias. Capacity must match demand; requests beyond the pre-initialized amount can spill into additional environments. It is the AWS option positioned for predictable startup and strict low-latency needs, with an associated cost.
AWS Lambda SnapStart Restores an initialized snapshot to reduce startup work. It is best effort, not a guarantee that cold starts vanish. Runtime eligibility and pricing can change. AWS says strict double-digit-millisecond startup requirements call for provisioned concurrency instead.
Google Cloud Run functions minimum instances Keeps a configured number of instances available to reduce cold starts. Initialization still needs to be lean; slow global initialization can extend startup even when instances are kept ready.
Azure Functions always-ready or warmup features Flex Consumption provides always-ready instances; Premium plans provide warmup triggers or always-ready settings. The suitable choice depends on the Azure plan, workload shape, and required scale behavior.

Product names, runtime support, plan behavior, and pricing are subject to change. Verify the current provider documentation and regional availability before committing to an architecture.

How to choose between optimization and ready capacity

Use a decision process rather than assuming the most expensive setting is best.

1. Set the latency objective

Define a target for typical and tail latency, especially p95 and p99. A user-facing checkout or interactive API may have a different tolerance from an asynchronous image-processing job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Describe the traffic shape

Steady traffic may need fewer ready instances than a workload that is quiet for hours and then receives a burst. Estimate how many requests can arrive concurrently; one warm environment does not eliminate startup for every simultaneous request.

3. Profile the startup path

Record runtime and framework versions, package size, imports, connection setup, native libraries, and application initialization. Remove avoidable work before paying to keep it ready.

4. Price the capacity and spillover

Always-ready or provisioned capacity changes the cost profile. Also account for requests that exceed the configured amount and create on-demand environments. Check current pricing rather than relying on an old estimate.

5. Check operational constraints

Review version and alias configuration, deployment sequencing, snapshot compatibility, connection handling, scaling rules, and monitoring. A latency control that is misconfigured during a rollout can create more risk than the cold starts it was meant to prevent.

Why periodic “keep-warm” pings are not a complete solution

A synthetic request may influence reuse under some provider behaviors, but it cannot guarantee that a particular environment remains available. It does not pre-create enough environments for a burst, does not control scale-out, and adds invocation cost and monitoring noise. Use such a tactic only as a workload-specific experiment with measured results. For a defined latency requirement, explicit ready-capacity controls are easier to reason about.

How to run a fair cold-start experiment

Public benchmark numbers are easy to misread because startup depends on the exact function and test setup. A fair comparison holds these variables constant:

  • Function code and dependency versions
  • Language runtime and framework version
  • Cloud region and memory or CPU allocation
  • Request payload and downstream services
  • Concurrency pattern, including burst size
  • Deployment version and configuration

Collect enough requests to report separate cold and warm distributions, identify how cold invocations were detected, and record when the sample was gathered. Do not rank providers using mismatched blog benchmarks. A 2020 study titled Serverless Computing: Behind the Scenes of Major Platforms analyzed more than 500,000 function calls across AWS Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, Azure Functions, and IBM Cloud Functions. It is useful evidence that cross-platform startup behavior has been studied and that methodology matters; its measurements are historical, not a current provider leaderboard.

A practical troubleshooting checklist

  • Only the first request after idle is slow: inspect initialization duration, imports, and global setup.
  • Latency rises during bursts: examine concurrency, the number of ready instances, and spillover beyond provisioned capacity.
  • Every request is slow: investigate handler work, database queries, network calls, and downstream services before changing cold-start settings.
  • Initialization fails intermittently: check connection timeouts, credential loading, DNS, and assumptions that a reused environment or cached resource always exists.
  • A deployment suddenly changes startup time: compare package size, dependency graph, runtime version, initialization code, and configuration with the previous version.
  • Ready capacity still shows spikes: verify that the setting applies to the deployed version or alias, that its quantity matches concurrency, and that requests are not routed to an unconfigured revision.

Cold starts in one sentence

Your function can feel slower when the platform must prepare a fresh execution environment before running the handler. The delay depends on your startup work and the provider’s scaling and capacity choices: trim initialization first, then compare ready-capacity options with their cost and operational trade-offs.
