The closest literal answer is dilute magnetic semiconductors (DMSs): semiconductor crystals in which magnetic ions are incorporated into the host. The best-known research examples are manganese-doped III–V materials such as (Ga,Mn)As and manganese-doped II–VI materials such as p-(Cd,Mn)Te. Their magnetic order can change light’s polarization and other optical properties.

Related magneto-optical work also uses transparent magnetic oxides, especially rare-earth iron garnets such as yttrium iron garnet (YIG). Garnets are important for controlling light, but should not automatically be called semiconductors. Finally, the inverse process—using light to change magnetism—is called opto-magnetic coupling, not magneto-optical readout.

What “controlling light with magnetism” means

Magneto-optics describes the way a material’s magnetic state changes how light travels through it or reflects from it. A magnetic field or magnetic order can rotate the polarization of transmitted light, alter reflected intensity, shift phase, change absorption, or produce nonreciprocal propagation in which light behaves differently in opposite directions.

Faraday rotation is the familiar transmission effect: linearly polarized light passes through a magnetized material and its polarization plane rotates. The magnetic Kerr effect is the reflection counterpart, measured from light reflected by a magnetic surface or film. The size and even the sign of these responses depend on composition, wavelength, geometry, magnetic state and temperature.

The phrase can also be used for the inverse direction. In opto-magnetic coupling, an optical pulse or continuous beam drives spin dynamics, changes magnetic order, excites collective modes or switches a metastable state. A material may therefore be useful either because magnetism changes light, because light changes magnetism, or because it supports both processes.

Dilute magnetic semiconductors: the most direct answer

How a DMS is made

A dilute magnetic semiconductor keeps the electronic structure of a semiconductor host while replacing a fraction of its atoms with magnetic ions, commonly transition-metal ions such as manganese. The dopant supplies localized magnetic moments. Exchange interactions between those moments and the host’s carriers couple electrical, magnetic and optical behavior.

“Dilute” does not mean that every sample has the same magnetic phase. Dopant concentration, carrier density, distribution of ions, defects, strain and growth conditions can determine whether the material is paramagnetic, ferromagnetic or in another magnetic state. It is more accurate to name the composition than to describe all DMSs as one uniform class of device material.

III–V example: (Ga,Mn)As

(Ga,Mn)As is the most extensively studied example in the III–V DMS literature. Manganese substitutes for gallium in a gallium arsenide host. The manganese ions provide localized spins, while the resulting carrier population mediates magnetic interactions. Reviews in Reviews of Modern Physics and the 2010 perspective by Tomasz Dietl use (Ga,Mn)As as a central example of the connection between semiconductor carriers and magnetic order.

When the material is magnetized, its electronic transitions and optical constants become sensitive to the magnetization. That sensitivity can be read through polarization rotation, dichroic absorption or related magneto-optical signals. This makes (Ga,Mn)As valuable for studying spin-dependent semiconductor physics and magnetic readout, even when a particular sample operates only at low temperature.

II–VI example: p-(Cd,Mn)Te

p-(Cd,Mn)Te is a manganese-doped II–VI semiconductor with holes in the valence band. It is another established platform for investigating how carrier-mediated magnetism and optical response coexist. The cited DMS literature reports demonstrated functionality at low temperature, so that evidence should not be presented as proof of room-temperature operation.

II–VI hosts and III–V hosts differ in band structure, defect chemistry and carrier control. Consequently, an optical effect observed in p-(Cd,Mn)Te cannot simply be assigned the same strength, wavelength or operating temperature in (Ga,Mn)As. Comparisons must specify the sample and measurement conditions.

Why DMSs are scientifically useful

  • One platform for carriers and spins: the semiconductor’s carriers can interact with localized magnetic moments.
  • Optical access: changes in magnetization can be monitored without making an electrical contact, using polarization or intensity measurements.
  • Compatibility with thin-film research: epitaxial growth, strain and heterostructures allow researchers to tune magnetic anisotropy and optical transitions.
  • Clear limitations: magnetic order, carrier concentration and optical losses are strongly composition- and temperature-dependent.

Magnetically doped oxide semiconductors

Transition-metal-substituted oxides form a second broad research direction. Reviews of oxide-based DMSs describe systems in which magnetism depends on the dopant species, oxygen vacancies and other defects, carrier concentration, morphology and exchange interactions. Two samples with the same nominal chemical formula can therefore show different magnetic behavior if their defect populations or processing histories differ.

Oxides are attractive because many are chemically robust and can be deposited on diverse substrates. Their optical transparency, absorption edge and carrier density vary widely, however. A report of ferromagnetism in one doped oxide does not establish intrinsic, robust ferromagnetism in every composition in that family; secondary magnetic phases and defect-mediated effects must be considered.

The 2010 perspective on DMSs and oxides discussed ferromagnetism above room temperature in magnetically doped p-type nitrides and oxides as a theoretical possibility in which valence-band holes mediate exchange. That historical prediction should be kept separate from the demonstrated low-temperature functionality reported for systems such as (Ga,Mn)As and p-(Cd,Mn)Te. Current claims require composition-specific evidence rather than a blanket “room-temperature magnetic semiconductor” label.

Magnetic garnets: powerful magneto-optic materials, but not automatically semiconductors

Rare-earth iron garnets are transparent magnetic oxides with strong magneto-optical responses. Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) is the best-known example. Garnets are used in research and devices involving Faraday rotation, optical isolators, magneto-optical recording and nonreciprocal photonics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YIG and related garnets are ferrimagnetic oxides, not dilute semiconductor alloys such as (Ga,Mn)As. Their usefulness comes from low optical absorption in relevant windows, magnetic resonance behavior and a large interaction between magnetization and light. A garnet film may be bonded to or integrated with a semiconductor waveguide, but the resulting photonic structure does not make the garnet itself a DMS.

The 2024 review “Magneto–Optical Properties and Applications of Magnetic Garnet” covers composition and substitution strategies used to tune garnet performance. When describing a device, identify whether the active magneto-optic layer is a garnet, an oxide semiconductor or a DMS; these categories have different electronic and magnetic mechanisms.

How the main material families compare

Family Representative composition What is coupled Typical optical role Important qualification
III–V DMS (Ga,Mn)As Localized Mn moments and semiconductor carriers Magnetization-sensitive polarization, absorption and related optical signals Reported functionality is material- and temperature-specific; do not assume room-temperature operation
II–VI DMS p-(Cd,Mn)Te Mn moments and valence-band holes Optical readout of carrier-mediated magnetic behavior Cited demonstrations are low-temperature; figures from one composition cannot be transferred to another
Oxide DMS Composition varies by host, dopant and defect chemistry Transition-metal moments, carriers, defects and exchange interactions Potential magneto-optic response with tunable transparency and conductivity Claims of ferromagnetism are composition- and evidence-sensitive
Magnetic garnet YIG and related rare-earth iron garnets Ferrimagnetic order in a transparent oxide Faraday rotation, optical isolation, recording and nonreciprocal photonics Do not classify a garnet as a semiconductor without a source for that specific material

No harmonized numerical performance table is established across these families in the cited material. A fair comparison would need the same wavelength, temperature, film thickness, optical geometry, magnetic field, loss metric and device objective. Ranking one family as the “best” without those conditions would be misleading.

Which properties determine whether a material is useful?

Host, dopant and magnetic phase

Start with the exact host and magnetic constituent: III–V, II–VI, oxide or garnet; manganese, another transition-metal dopant or a ferrimagnetic iron sublattice. Then establish whether the sample is ferromagnetic, ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic or paramagnetic in the intended operating range.

Operating temperature

Temperature can change carrier density, magnetic order and optical linewidth. A low-temperature magneto-optical demonstration is scientifically meaningful but is not evidence for a practical room-temperature component. For every candidate, ask for the measured magnetic transition or operating range of the actual composition and film.

Optical response and wavelength

Determine whether the application needs Faraday rotation in transmission, Kerr rotation in reflection, intensity modulation, phase control, absorption contrast or nonreciprocity. Optical constants are wavelength-dependent, so a strong response near an electronic transition may accompany greater absorption. A transparent garnet and an absorbing semiconductor may serve different system-level purposes even if both rotate polarization.

Integration and losses

Device integration involves more than the intrinsic material response. Film growth or bonding, surface roughness, waveguide overlap, thermal budget, magnetic biasing and chemical stability can dominate the final design. Resonators, cavities or patterned photonic structures may be used to enhance a weak interaction, but the enhancement belongs to the combined structure rather than to the bulk material alone.

How magneto-optical readout works in practice

  1. Prepare the magnetic state. Apply a field, current or other stimulus, or use the material’s remanent magnetization if it has one.
  2. Choose transmission or reflection geometry. Transmission measurements probe Faraday rotation; reflection measurements probe the Kerr effect.
  3. Set the probe wavelength and polarization. Keep wavelength, incidence angle and polarization optics fixed while comparing magnetic states.
  4. Measure a differential signal. Record polarization angle, ellipticity, intensity, phase or propagation direction as the magnetic field or magnetization changes.
  5. Check non-magnetic causes. Separate ordinary birefringence, heating, strain and absorption changes from the magnetic contribution by reversing the field, changing temperature or using an appropriate control sample.

This workflow applies to DMS films, oxide layers and garnets, but the interpretation differs. In a DMS, the signal can involve carrier-mediated exchange and semiconductor transitions; in YIG, it reflects the optical response of a ferrimagnetic oxide.

Can light control magnetism?

Yes, but that is the inverse direction and should be named separately. The 2026 review “Light–Magnetism Coupling: From Magneto-Optical Readout to Opto-magnetic Control” discusses optical excitation of spin dynamics, collective modes and magnetic switching. Ultrafast pulses can move a system away from equilibrium; resonant cavities can couple photons to magnons; and engineered two-dimensional or topological systems can make magnetic states optically addressable.

In a readout experiment, magnetism is the input and the optical signal is the output. In an opto-magnetic experiment, the light pulse or optical field is the input and the magnetic state or dynamics is the output. A paper may study both, but the two claims should not be collapsed into the single statement that a material “controls light with magnetism.”

Where the field is moving

Current work combines magnetic films with integrated photonics rather than relying on a bulk crystal alone. Research directions include garnet thin films on waveguides, integrated nonreciprocal photonic circuits, magnetoplasmonic and magneto-photonic structures, all-optical switching, cavity optomagnonics and light-controlled magnetism in two-dimensional and topological systems.

These architectures can increase light–matter interaction through confinement or resonance, reduce the size of magnetic elements and provide optical access to high-frequency dynamics. They also introduce practical constraints: fabrication tolerances, optical loss, thermal management, magnetic-field generation, interface quality and long-term material stability. A photonic cavity or waveguide is an engineered device structure, not a new semiconductor material category.

How to describe a candidate accurately

  • Name the complete composition, including the host and magnetic dopant or constituent.
  • State whether the evidence concerns magneto-optical readout, opto-magnetic control or both.
  • Report the magnetic phase and measured temperature range for the specific sample.
  • Identify the optical observable—Faraday rotation, Kerr response, absorption, phase or nonreciprocity—and its wavelength or spectral range when available.
  • Distinguish intrinsic material behavior from enhancement supplied by a resonator, cavity, plasmonic pattern or waveguide.
  • Do not generalize a result from one alloy, defect concentration or film-growth method to an entire material family.

Following these rules prevents the two most common errors: calling every magnetic optical material a semiconductor, and calling every light-driven magnetic experiment magneto-optical readout.
