Security testing can show that a specified AI model or AI-enabled system resisted, or failed against, defined attack techniques under documented conditions. It cannot prove that the model is secure against every attack, safe in every deployment, or protected after a later change. The useful result is bounded evidence: a record of what was tested, how it was tested, what happened, and what remains unknown.
That distinction matters because an AI model rarely operates alone. Retrieval, tools, identity, permissions, APIs, data stores and infrastructure can create vulnerabilities that a base-model test never exercises. Read a test report as a statement about a configuration and threat model—not as a permanent security certificate.
What a security test actually proves
A credible test supports a claim with four parts: an object, conditions, threats and observations. For example, a report might establish that a named model version, behind a particular system prompt and content filter, blocked a documented set of direct prompt-injection attempts in 1,000 trials. That is useful evidence. It does not establish how the same model behaves after fine-tuning, when connected to a new tool, or when an attacker uses a different language or an indirect instruction in a document.
The object under test
Identify whether the target is:
- A base model accessed through an API.
- A fine-tuned or instruction-wrapped model.
- An application that adds retrieval, memory, guardrails or output processing.
- An agent that can call tools, change records or perform transactions.
- A live deployment with real identities, data, network paths and operational controls.
Each object exposes a different attack surface. A model-only result cannot be transferred automatically to an integrated agent.

The tested conditions
Document the model and build version, system and developer instructions, decoding settings, safety filters, retrieval corpus, tool manifest, user roles, permission scope, network position and data classification. A change to any of these can change the security result. Keep the exact prompts, responses, logs and environment identifiers so another tester can reproduce the observation.
The threat assumptions
Security evidence is conditional on what the tester allowed the attacker to know and do. State whether the attacker had an account, could submit documents, could make repeated requests, could observe errors, or could influence retrieved content. Record whether tests included direct and indirect prompts, multi-turn conversations, multilingual or encoded input, poisoned documents and attempts to cross user or tenant boundaries.
The observation and its success rule
A test must define what counts as a failure. Disclosing a secret, issuing an unauthorized tool call, producing executable output, bypassing a policy or exhausting resources are different outcomes. Use deterministic checks where possible and explain human review when judgment is required. A language model should not be the sole judge of its own safety result; independent checks or reviewers reduce false positives and false negatives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat testing cannot prove
It cannot prove universal security
Finite test cases sample an effectively unlimited input space. A clean result means no failure was observed in the tested cases and conditions. It does not mean that an undiscovered prompt, attack chain or future capability cannot succeed. NIST’s AI 100-2 E2025 taxonomy organizes adversarial machine-learning threats by attack type, lifecycle stage, attacker goal, capability and knowledge. Those dimensions show why “all attacks” is not a single measurable category.
It cannot prove the whole application is secure
Retrieval-augmented generation can expose poisoned or confidential documents. A tool with excessive permissions can turn a harmless-looking instruction into an unauthorized action. An API, plug-in, identity provider, storage bucket or network service can introduce conventional vulnerabilities. The OWASP Artificial Intelligence Security Verification Standard says AI-specific controls should be assessed alongside general application, infrastructure and supply-chain security. OWASP’s AI and LLM application testing guidance gives the practical implication: a safe base model connected to an over-privileged tool can still be exploitable.

It cannot prove future versions or unchanged behavior
Model providers can update weights, safety tuning, routing, context limits or moderation systems without preserving every prior behavior. Developers also change prompts, retrieval indexes, tools, permissions and data. A report is therefore dated evidence. Treat the tested configuration as a versioned artifact and rerun relevant tests after material changes.
It cannot prove business impact is absent
A benchmark may show that a model refuses a prohibited request, yet say nothing about whether a successful bypass would expose regulated data, transfer money or interrupt a critical process. Impact depends on real permissions, assets, users and recovery controls. Translate model findings into application and organizational risk before deciding that a residual issue is acceptable.
Three evaluation approaches answer different questions
NIST’s Assessing Risks and Impacts of AI (ARIA) describes three evaluation levels: model testing, red-teaming and field testing. They are complementary rather than interchangeable.
| Approach | Primary object | Strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model testing | Base or configured model in controlled conditions | Repeatable measurements against a fixed corpus or attack suite | May omit tools, real users, permissions and operational context |
| Red-teaming | Model plus safeguards and, when appropriate, the integrated application | Human creativity can discover novel attack paths and chained failures | Coverage is harder to quantify; results depend on team skill, time and access |
| Field testing | Deployed system in realistic use | Reveals contextual failures, workflow effects and operational impact | More difficult to control, reproduce and run safely with real data |
ARIA says its evaluation work considers technical and contextual robustness as well as performance and accuracy. A scripted benchmark therefore cannot stand in for adversarial exploration or observation in a live operating context.
Model testing
Use a versioned corpus and automated checks to measure known behaviors: refusal consistency, data-exfiltration resistance, instruction following boundaries and output safety. Repeat stochastic trials because temperature, sampling and hidden service changes can alter responses. Report confidence limits or at least the number of attempts and failures rather than a single pass percentage without denominators.

Red-teaming
Give testers explicit goals, allowed techniques and stop conditions. Test both the model and its safeguards, including filters, classifiers, tool brokers and monitoring. OWASP’s AI red-teaming initiative emphasizes methodology, result interpretation and scoring; a red-team label alone does not guarantee thoroughness. Preserve successful attack transcripts, reproduce them independently and convert confirmed bypasses into regression cases.

Observe the system with realistic identities, documents, workloads and escalation paths, using synthetic or carefully controlled data where possible. Measure whether a theoretical bypass actually reaches sensitive assets, whether alerts fire, and whether operators can contain and recover from it. Field tests should have rollback and data-handling plans because they exercise production-like consequences.
Use a threat model before choosing tests
Start with the assets and actions that must be protected: secrets, personal data, model weights, tenant separation, financial transactions, code execution, availability and safety-critical decisions. Then map attacker goals and access assumptions to the system lifecycle. NIST AI 100-2 E2025 provides vocabulary for this exercise, covering attack types, lifecycle stages, goals, capabilities and knowledge.
Common AI-specific test areas
Include the categories that apply to your architecture:
- Direct prompt injection: attempts to override system instructions through user input.
- Indirect prompt injection: malicious instructions embedded in retrieved pages, files, messages or tool output.
- Sensitive-information disclosure: extraction of secrets, training data, system prompts or another user’s records.
- Unsafe output handling: generated content interpreted as code, markup, queries or commands by downstream components.
- Excessive agency: unauthorized actions caused by broad tool permissions, weak confirmation or confused-deputy behavior.
- Prompt leakage: disclosure of hidden instructions or security-sensitive configuration.
- Vector-store and retrieval weaknesses: poisoned embeddings, access-control errors, stale documents and cross-tenant retrieval.
- Unbounded resource consumption: requests that cause excessive tokens, tool calls, compute, storage or cost.
Also test conventional controls around authentication, authorization, rate limiting, secrets management, dependency integrity, logging and network isolation. AI behavior does not replace those controls.

How to read a security test report
Ask the report author to answer each question explicitly:
- Which model and version were tested? Include hosting mode, fine-tuning, wrappers and safety components.
- What configuration was active? Record prompts, retrieval sources, tools, identities, permissions, network routes and data.
- What attacker access was assumed? State account privileges, rate limits, knowledge, document-upload ability and persistence.
- Which categories and cases were covered? Separate direct, indirect, multi-turn, multilingual, encoded and document-borne tests where relevant, and list exclusions.
- How many trials were run? Give attempts per category and explain randomization or repeated sampling.
- What counted as success? Describe deterministic assertions, human review and any model-assisted grading. Identify who performed independent validation.
- How were findings rated? Report severity, exploit prerequisites, affected assets, reproducibility and business impact—not only an aggregate score.
- What happened after discovery? Show fixes, retests and regression cases for confirmed bypasses.
- What changed since testing? Reconcile model, prompt, data, retrieval, tools, permissions and infrastructure changes with the report’s continuing validity.
These details let you replace a vague statement such as “the model passed” with a defensible one: a named version in a named configuration resisted specified attack classes for a stated number of trials, with documented exclusions and remaining findings.

1. Establish a baseline
Freeze the model identifier, application build, prompts, policies, tool schemas, retrieval snapshot and test data. Assign an owner and timestamp. Store request and response logs with secrets redacted, plus the exact evaluator version.
2. Build layered coverage
Combine a fixed automated corpus for repeatability, attack-specific tests for known weaknesses, human red-teaming for novel chains and field exercises for operational context. Choose depth according to exposure: a read-only assistant needs different testing from an agent authorized to modify production records.

4. Validate and regress
Have a second person or team reproduce material findings. After remediation, rerun the original attack and nearby variants. Keep a regression corpus in version control and run it on every model, prompt, retrieval, tool or permission change.
5. Report uncertainty
Include unknowns, untested paths and nondeterministic behavior. If a category was excluded because the system does not expose that capability, say so; if it was excluded because of time, state the coverage gap. Honest exclusions are more useful than an inflated score.
What major frameworks contribute—and what they do not
| Framework or guide | Contribution | What it is not |
|---|---|---|
| NIST AI 100-2 E2025 (March 24, 2025) | Taxonomy and terminology for adversarial machine learning across attacks, lifecycle stages, goals, capabilities and knowledge. | A product certification or evidence that every threat was tested. |
| NIST ARIA | A three-level evaluation concept—model testing, red-teaming and field testing—for technical and contextual robustness, performance and accuracy. | A universal pass threshold or guarantee for a particular model. |
| OWASP AISVS 1.0 (final release stated on the project page as June 2026) | Vendor-neutral, testable AI-lifecycle requirements with three verification levels selected by risk. | A substitute for general application, infrastructure and supply-chain verification. Cite requirement IDs with the version because identifiers can change. |
| OWASP AI Testing Guide | Developing project guidance for repeatable testing across application, model, infrastructure and data layers. | Automatically a final standard; check the project’s current release status before making that claim. |
| NIST AI RMF | A voluntary framework for organizing trustworthy-AI risk management. Version 1.0 was released January 26, 2023; its Generative AI Profile followed July 26, 2024, and the framework is being revised. | A technical test result, security score or compliance certificate. |
NIST describes the AI RMF as voluntary and intended to improve the incorporation of trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use and evaluation of AI products, services and systems. Use it to structure governance around test evidence, not to claim that testing has proved security.
Why scores and “passes” are easy to misread
An aggregate score can hide category gaps. A system might block 99 percent of benignly phrased jailbreaks while failing every indirect injection delivered through a trusted document. Always request category-level results, denominators, severity weighting and the definition of a successful attack. Compare scores only when the test corpus, configuration, evaluator and scoring rules are comparable.
Model graders introduce another source of uncertainty. They can miss subtle disclosure, over-penalize harmless content or be influenced by the same prompt attack being measured. Pair automated grading with deterministic assertions, human sampling and independent review. Publish disagreements and borderline cases rather than forcing every response into a confident binary label.
When does an old test stop being useful?
Reassessment is warranted after a model or provider update, fine-tuning, system-prompt change, new retrieval source, index rebuild, tool addition, permission expansion, identity change, infrastructure migration or material change in user population. Re-run smoke tests immediately, then the full regression and risk-based suites. Schedule field exercises when workflows or threat conditions change even if the model itself is unchanged.
Keep a dated chain of evidence: configuration manifest, test corpus version, evaluator code, logs, findings, fixes, retest results and risk acceptance. This makes it possible to tell whether a new result reflects a real security improvement, a changed test, or simply a different deployment.

A defensible conclusion to put in a report
State exactly what the evidence supports and no more. For example: “Model version X, deployed in application build Y with retrieval set Z and read-only tool permissions, resisted the listed direct and indirect injection cases in N repeated trials. Tests did not cover production data, multilingual prompts or write-capable tools. Remaining findings are tracked in the regression suite.” That wording gives decision-makers a useful security signal while preserving the limits that keep the claim honest.
