At the ET Startup Awards 2026 in Bengaluru, Times Internet Chairman Satyan Gajwani argued that India’s startup ecosystem is maturing as founders and investors take on longer-horizon work in semiconductors, AI, robotics, clean-energy technologies and new materials. He said India’s progress in AI has been slower than it should be, and pointed to deeper research, serious computing capacity, entrepreneurial ambition and patient capital as ways to close the gap.
What Gajwani said about India’s startup evolution
Gajwani’s address framed the move into deep technology as a change in the kind of problems Indian startups are willing to tackle. Rather than focusing only on earlier startup sectors, founders are pursuing fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, robotics, clean-energy technologies and new materials. He also pointed to investors prepared to wait longer for these ventures to develop.
As an illustration of the ambition involved, the Economic Times video report says Gajwani invoked Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 launch and argued that reaching orbit shows India can build AI that matters globally. That example reflects his framing of ecosystem maturity; it should not be read as proof that the challenges of building competitive AI have already been solved.

Gajwani assessed India’s AI progress as slower than it should be. The report does not quantify the gap, compare India’s compute capacity with other countries, or specify how much investment would be required. His remarks are therefore a qualitative diagnosis and prescription, not a measurement of India’s position.

- Dual-Brain Hybrid Power: Combines the Qualcomm Dragonwing QRB2210 MPU (Quad-core Arm Cortex-A53 @ 2.0 GHz CPU, Adreno GPU, AI acceleration) and the real-time, low-power STM32U585 MCU for advanced applications like object recognition, voice commands, and motion detection.
- AI & Linux Capabilities: Unlocks AI-powered vision and sound solutions; runs Linux Debian OS for coding in Python and supports the Arduino ecosystem with libraries and Sketches; quick start with Arduino App Lab.
- Advanced Features: Equipped with 4 GB LPDDR4 RAM, 32 GB eMMC built-in storage, ideal for single-board computer (SBC) mode, running multiple simultaneous high-level processes, more complex AI or ML models, extensive logs. Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
- Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
- Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.
He identified four ingredients for making progress: deep research, serious compute, entrepreneurial vision and patient capital. In practical terms, the argument links scientific and engineering work with access to the computing resources needed to develop AI, founders able to pursue ambitious applications, and investors willing to support longer development cycles.
What patient capital and government backing mean in this context
Patient capital matters to Gajwani’s case because deep-tech work can require sustained development before a product is ready for a market. His remarks point to a longer investment horizon as a complement to research and compute; they do not establish a funding target, a new government program, or a policy outcome.

Government’s role also appeared in a separate deep-tech panel at the same event. In that discussion, founders described capital intensity, domestic capability-building and supply-chain challenges, and argued that government should act as an early customer. That was the panel’s position, distinct from Gajwani’s address. The coverage does not establish that a particular procurement program exists or that public purchasing has resolved these constraints.

How the 2025 remarks provide context
Gajwani raised related themes at the 2025 ET Startup Awards, calling for AI innovation centres where talent, compute and capital could converge, as well as deep research, patient capital and visionary policymaking. The recurrence shows continuity in his argument across the two award events; it is not evidence that those proposals have since been implemented.

What the remarks establish—and what they do not
- Gajwani’s argument: India’s startup ecosystem is taking on more ambitious, technically demanding fields, while AI progress needs stronger research, compute, entrepreneurial vision and patient capital.
- The separate panel’s argument: Deep-tech founders face financing and supply-chain challenges and want government to serve as an early customer.
- Not established by the coverage: a quantified AI gap, a required capital amount, a specific procurement initiative, or evidence that government support has already overcome the barriers discussed.
