Short answer: Samsung says AI infrastructure is driving unusually strong demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), server DRAM and enterprise SSDs while available capacity remains constrained. That combination is putting upward pressure on memory prices and raising the risk of tight supply, especially for data-center products. It does not prove that every consumer RAM module or SSD will be unavailable, and Samsung’s releases do not provide a percentage forecast for retail prices or a date when store inventories will return to normal.
The clearest evidence is Samsung’s own results from the fourth quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026, plus its February 2026 announcement that HBM4 had entered mass production and commercial shipment. Those are company results and forecasts, not an independent retail-price survey.
What Samsung’s AI boom means for memory prices
Samsung reported an overall upward trend in memory prices as demand for AI systems and servers grew faster than available supply in several high-value segments. Its Memory Business posted record quarterly revenue and operating profit in the fourth quarter of 2025 despite limited supply availability. The company attributed that performance to strong conventional DRAM demand and expanding HBM sales amid rising prices.
In its first-quarter 2026 results, Samsung said it was meeting high-value AI demand while supply remained limited, and that industry-wide price increases contributed to its results. In the second quarter, it again cited limited capacity and upward industry price trends. The company’s second-quarter outlook said demand for server DRAM, enterprise SSDs (eSSDs) and HBM should accelerate in the second half of 2026, leaving the market undersupplied even as manufacturers increase production.

For buyers, the defensible conclusion is directional rather than numerical: AI is creating upward pressure and a risk of tighter availability in parts of the memory market. Samsung has not published a dated consumer retail-price series, a market-wide percentage increase, or a date by which retail supply will normalize. A precise prediction for a particular RAM kit or SSD would go beyond the evidence.
Why AI is changing the memory mix
AI accelerators process enormous amounts of data in parallel. They therefore rely on specialized HBM placed close to the processor, while the surrounding server still needs large amounts of conventional DRAM and fast storage. These products are related, but they are not interchangeable.
| Memory category | Primary role | What Samsung says about demand |
|---|---|---|
| HBM | Very high-bandwidth memory attached to AI accelerators and other high-performance processors | Expanding sales, limited capacity and a forecast of faster demand growth in the second half of 2026 |
| Server DDR5 DRAM | Main system memory in data-center servers | A stated product priority as AI infrastructure spending and server deployments continue |
| Enterprise SSD (eSSD) | NAND-based storage for data-center workloads | Included among the products for which Samsung expects second-half 2026 demand to accelerate |
Samsung’s product strategy reflects that mix. Its fourth-quarter release emphasized HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs. The first-quarter update described an AI-product-centered strategy covering DRAM and NAND. The second-quarter release again stressed higher-value products, including HBM4 and DDR5. This supports the view that manufacturers are prioritizing products with strong AI and server demand.
Those statements do not quantify how many conventional DRAM wafer starts are displaced by HBM production, nor do they establish that every consumer memory SKU is short. HBM, desktop RAM and consumer SSDs use different products, interfaces and qualification processes. A shortage in one category should not automatically be treated as a shortage in all of them.
What Samsung reported from Q4 2025 through Q2 2026
The sequence of Samsung’s public releases is important because it shows a continuing pattern rather than a single quarter’s comment.

Fourth quarter 2025: record Memory Business results with constrained supply
Samsung’s January 29, 2026 announcement said the Memory Business reached record quarterly revenue and operating profit despite limited supply availability. Strong conventional DRAM demand and expanding HBM sales coincided with an overall increase in memory prices. Samsung also said it was emphasizing HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs.
First quarter 2026: AI demand served, but prices still rising
In its April 30, 2026 first-quarter results, Samsung said high-value AI demand was being served despite limited supply. It also pointed to industry-wide price increases as a contributor to its performance. The release described an AI-focused approach to both DRAM and NAND products.

Samsung’s July 30, 2026 second-quarter release said server revenue reached a record-high share of its sales mix and that the Memory Business achieved another record quarter despite limited capacity. Samsung expected continued AI-infrastructure capital spending and broader adoption of agentic AI to support second-half demand for server DRAM, eSSDs and HBM.
The company also expected the market to remain undersupplied despite partial moderation in mobile and PC demand and efforts to increase production. That is Samsung’s outlook for the second half of 2026, not a guarantee that every memory product will be difficult to buy.
For context, Samsung reported KRW 127.5 trillion in consolidated revenue and KRW 89.2 trillion in operating profit for its Device Solutions division in the second quarter of 2026. Those are division-level figures; they are not Memory Business revenue and profit figures.

HBM4: the specific product behind much of the AI demand
On February 12, 2026, Samsung announced mass production and commercial shipment of HBM4. The company said the product uses 1c DRAM and a 4 nm logic base die. Samsung specified a transfer speed of 11.7 gigabits per second, with capability up to 13 Gbps, and maximum bandwidth of 3.3 terabytes per second per stack.

Samsung forecast that HBM sales would more than triple in 2026 compared with 2025 and said it was expanding HBM4 production capacity. “More than triple” is a company forecast, not a confirmed full-year result. Samsung also described sampling plans for HBM4E and custom HBM. Road-map statements can change as customer qualification and production schedules evolve.
“By leveraging our process competitiveness and design optimization, we are able to secure substantial performance headroom, enabling us to satisfy our customers’ escalating demands for higher performance, when they need them.”
That statement, from Sang Joon Hwang, Samsung’s Executive Vice President and Head of Memory Development, explains Samsung’s design rationale. It is a company executive’s view, not an independent assessment of market supply.

Will consumer RAM and SSD prices rise?
They may face upward pressure, but Samsung’s evidence cannot turn that possibility into a universal price forecast. The company reports overall memory-price increases and constrained capacity, while its product priorities favor HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs. Retail prices for desktop RAM, laptop memory and consumer SSDs also depend on channel inventory, controller and NAND costs, exchange rates, promotions and the exact capacity and interface.
No official Samsung release cited here gives a percentage increase for a consumer DDR5 kit, a consumer NVMe SSD or any other retail SKU. It also does not provide a retailer-by-retailer inventory forecast. Treat claims such as “RAM will rise by exactly X percent” or “all SSDs will be sold out by a specific date” as unsupported by these releases unless separate, dated market data backs them up.
The effect is likely to be uneven:
- Data-center HBM: highest direct exposure to AI accelerator demand and the capacity constraints Samsung describes.
- Server DDR5: exposed to continued server expansion and therefore part of Samsung’s stated priority mix.
- Enterprise SSDs: exposed to AI data pipelines and server storage demand, with Samsung expecting stronger second-half demand.
- Consumer DRAM and SSDs: potentially affected by broader industry pricing and allocation, but not proven by these sources to be universally scarce.
What availability could look like for different buyers
AI and cloud infrastructure operators
These buyers are closest to the pressure Samsung describes. HBM must be qualified with a specific accelerator package, and server DRAM and eSSDs must meet platform, firmware and endurance requirements. A manufacturer expanding HBM4 capacity can improve supply over time while still reporting an undersupplied market if customer demand grows faster than output.
Enterprise IT teams
Budgeting should separate accelerator memory, server DIMMs and storage rather than treating them as one “memory” line. Confirm lead times and allocation with vendors, specify compatible DDR5 modules and enterprise SSD endurance ratings, and avoid assuming that a quoted HBM shipment date applies to ordinary server RAM.
PC builders and upgraders
An HBM constraint is not proof that every desktop RAM kit or consumer SSD is unavailable. Check the exact capacity, speed, module type, motherboard or laptop support and current stock on the date of purchase. If a preferred kit is temporarily unavailable, a compatible capacity or speed tier may be easier to find, but compatibility must be verified for the particular system.

Consumers shopping for storage
Consumer NAND products are storage, not HBM or system RAM. Samsung’s interim business report documents a consumer Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD option at 4TB, but that product should be discussed only as a storage example. It is not a substitute for accelerator HBM and does not resolve an AI-memory supply constraint.
How to interpret Samsung’s second-half 2026 forecast
Samsung’s wording combines several conditions: AI infrastructure capital spending continues, agentic AI adoption broadens, server DRAM, eSSDs and HBM demand grows, mobile and PC demand moderates somewhat, and manufacturers increase production. Even with the moderation and added output, Samsung expects the market to remain undersupplied.
That forecast has two practical implications. First, additional production does not necessarily mean immediate retail relief; new capacity can be absorbed by existing server and accelerator orders. Second, the forecast is about market direction and Samsung’s business planning, not a guaranteed price path for a particular region, retailer or product family.
Samsung’s reported results also describe its own sales mix and capacity position. They should not be treated as a complete measure of every memory manufacturer, every geography or every retail channel. Availability can improve in one category while remaining tight in another.
A practical buying and planning checklist
- Identify the memory type. Decide whether the requirement is HBM for an accelerator, DDR5 system memory or NAND storage. They are not interchangeable.
- Write down the compatibility requirements. For RAM, record module type, generation, capacity, speed and platform support. For SSDs, record form factor, interface, capacity and endurance requirement.
- Check dated availability. Compare current retailer or distributor stock and quoted lead time for the exact SKU. Samsung’s company outlook is not a live inventory feed.
- Separate price movement from product substitution. A cheaper SSD cannot replace required server DRAM, and a desktop RAM kit cannot replace HBM4 in an accelerator design.
- Plan for allocation risk. Enterprise and infrastructure buyers should ask vendors about committed quantities, qualification status and acceptable alternatives rather than relying on a general market headline.
- Recheck before ordering. Prices and stock can change between specification, approval and purchase, particularly during a period of constrained capacity.
What is still unknown
The cited Samsung materials do not establish a market-wide consumer price percentage, a retail price for a specific RAM kit or SSD, or the date when store availability will normalize. They also do not quantify the share of conventional DRAM capacity redirected to HBM, and they do not show SKU-level inventory by country or retailer.
Those limits matter because “memory prices” covers several distinct markets. A company can report higher HBM and server prices while a particular consumer SSD is discounted, or report constrained capacity while a retailer still has ample stock purchased earlier. Any consumer forecast should therefore identify the product, region, date and channel instead of extrapolating from Samsung’s aggregate commentary.
The bottom line for buyers
Samsung’s AI-driven growth is a credible reason to expect continued pressure on high-value memory pricing and availability, especially HBM, server DDR5 and enterprise SSDs. Samsung has begun shipping HBM4, is expanding capacity and expects HBM sales to more than triple in 2026 versus 2025, yet it still forecasts an undersupplied market in the second half of 2026.
