Samsung users who switch to Google Messages most often describe missing customization and inbox organization—especially themes, thread appearance, and categories. Others mention the ability to copy only part of a message or say Google Messages navigation feels less familiar. These are recurring complaints in individual user discussions, not a ranked survey, so they should be treated as preferences rather than universal losses.
The switch also brings broader RCS capabilities, including typing indicators and high-resolution media when the necessary compatibility conditions are met. For U.S. Galaxy users, the change is increasingly important: Samsung says Samsung Messages is discontinued starting July 6, 2026, on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer.
What do Samsung users say they miss?
In user transition discussions, the reported losses cluster around appearance, organization, message handling, and familiar navigation. The complaints are anecdotal; there is no published statistic establishing which feature switchers miss most or how common each experience is.
Themes and thread appearance
Users describe missing Samsung themes and app-wide appearance options. Samsung’s feature guide documents wallpaper or background-color customization for individual Samsung Messages conversations. On some devices, it also documents controls for bubble opacity and text contrast. That confirms the features existed in Samsung Messages, but it does not establish that Google Messages lacks every comparable option in every version.

- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
For people who personalized conversations, the difference can be more noticeable than a change in icon or layout: a familiar thread may no longer look the way they set it up.
Categories and inbox organization
Some switchers list categories as a feature they miss. This is best understood as a workflow preference: users who relied on categorized conversations may need to adjust how they find messages. The discussion does not establish that everyone used categories, or that Google Messages lacks an equivalent in every version or configuration.

It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Copying only part of a message
Users also ask about selecting and copying only a specific portion of a text instead of copying the whole message. They describe selective copying as a small but useful convenience. The official documentation reviewed does not provide a complete, version-specific comparison of text selection between the two apps, so this point remains a user-reported difference rather than a confirmed feature-by-feature verdict.

One reported frustration is needing an additional swipe to return to the conversation list. This kind of complaint is subjective and can depend on app version, device, and gesture settings. A navigation change that feels minor to one person can disrupt a routine built around frequent texting.

What Google Messages adds with RCS
Google Messages supports RCS features such as high-resolution photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts, messaging over mobile data or Wi-Fi, and group-chat management. These features depend on RCS being available and enabled for the conversation.
- RCS participation: All participants need RCS enabled for the RCS chat features to work as described by Google.
- End-to-end encryption: Google’s encryption claim applies to Google Messages conversations using RCS when all participants are using Google Messages with RCS enabled. It should not be read as a claim that every RCS conversation is encrypted.
- Cross-platform rollout: Google announced that end-to-end encrypted cross-platform RCS messaging was beginning a beta rollout for supported iPhones running iOS 26.5 and Android users on the latest Google Messages version. Availability depends on supported devices, carriers, and encryption being enabled; it is not universal.
For some people, these capabilities outweigh the customization or workflow changes. For others, the trade-off depends on whether their contacts can use RCS and whether they rely on Samsung-specific organization or device continuity.

What changes for Galaxy phones, tablets, and watches?
Google Messages is preloaded or set as the default on select Samsung devices, and Google’s documentation describes messaging across selected Galaxy phones, tablets, and watches. Support is not identical across the Galaxy lineup: Google notes limitations for legacy tablets and watches, and Samsung says Galaxy Watch4 or newer is required for its stated Google Messages watch support.
Recommended Free Tools
- Older Tizen watches: Samsung says watches launched before Galaxy Watch4 will no longer show full message conversation history after Samsung Messages is discontinued, although users can still read and send texts.
- Call & Text on Other Devices: Samsung says its Message Continuity feature through Call & Text on Other Devices will be disrupted.
- Tablets and carrier support: Samsung’s instructions describe using Google Messages across a phone and tablet, but model and carrier limitations apply. Check compatibility for the specific devices and carrier rather than assuming every Galaxy tablet can use the same workflow.
Will Samsung Messages conversations transfer?
Samsung says messages and conversations transfer automatically to Google Messages. The time depends on how much data is being moved; Samsung’s U.S. support guidance says a full transfer can take up to approximately 24 hours. Allow the transfer to finish, then verify that important conversation history is present before relying on it. Automatic migration is Samsung’s stated process, not a guarantee that every individual transfer will be flawless.

What U.S. Galaxy users need to know about discontinuation
Samsung’s current U.S.-market guidance says Samsung Messages is discontinued starting July 6, 2026, on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer. After discontinuation, the app cannot send messages except to emergency numbers or emergency contacts. Samsung also says the older app is not available for download on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer. This is U.S.-specific guidance; it should not be assumed to describe policy in every country.
For Galaxy devices released before 2022, Samsung says switching messaging apps may temporarily interrupt ongoing RCS conversations. RCS can resume if both sides use Google Messages, while SMS and MMS remain available during the pause.
Quick Recap
Check these workflows before switching
- Confirm your region and phone software. Samsung’s discontinuation date and restrictions cited here apply to its U.S. guidance and Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer.
- Check the devices you use for messages. If you rely on a tablet, watch, or Call & Text on Other Devices, verify its model and the applicable carrier support; older Tizen watches have a specific conversation-history limitation.
- Consider how you use your inbox. If you depend on thread personalization or categories, decide whether a different appearance and organization workflow will work for you. Selective copying and navigation are also reported adjustment points.
- Allow time for migration. Samsung says transfer duration depends on data volume and may reach approximately 24 hours. Afterward, check for important conversation history and, if you use RCS on an older Galaxy phone, allow for the temporary interruption Samsung describes.
- Check RCS with the people you message. RCS features and the encryption conditions described by Google depend on participant setup; cross-platform encrypted RCS remains a supported-device and carrier-dependent rollout.
