Short answer: Samsung The Frame includes Art Mode, free rotating Art Store Streams, and the ability to display your own photos. You do not need a paid membership to use those options. An Art Store membership adds on-demand access to Samsung’s larger catalog and subscription-only selection features. A Samsung Account, internet connection, compatible model, and regional availability determine which network features you can use.

Art Mode and the Art Store are different things

Art Mode is The Frame television’s display state when it is not showing normal TV content. Instead of a black screen, the panel displays artwork or your personal photos. Samsung says Art Mode adjusts brightness and color tone in response to ambient light, so the image can look more like a framed print in changing room conditions. A built-in motion sensor can turn the display on or off when it detects movement.

Art Mode is part of the television’s operating experience; it is not itself a paid service. Samsung support also says Art Mode cannot be permanently disabled. You can leave the television displaying art, switch back to TV viewing, or let the sensor manage the screen, but there is no setting that removes Art Mode entirely from the product.

The Art Store is Samsung’s artwork service inside Art Mode. It supplies rotating free artwork and, with a membership, a larger on-demand catalog. You can also use Art Mode without the Art Store by importing your own images.

Samsung’s Art Mode support instructions and The Frame product information describe these functions, but availability can differ by country, model, screen size, and software version.

What you get without paying

Free Art Store Streams

Samsung’s current US Art Mode page says Art Store Streams supplies 30 curated artworks each month without requiring a paid subscription. Another Samsung page describes more than 370 free pieces annually, while The Frame product FAQ says more than 360 different pieces a year. Because Samsung’s own pages disagree and say the timing and count may vary by region and change without notice, treat the service as a rotating selection rather than a guaranteed annual number.

Free Streams are designed for viewers who are happy to let Samsung choose the monthly selection. They do not provide the same control as browsing the complete catalog. The free service remains available to non-subscribers, according to Samsung’s US Art Mode page.

Your own photos

You can display personal photos in Art Mode without purchasing an Art Store membership. Samsung documents two transfer methods: the SmartThings mobile app and a USB storage device connected to the television’s One Connect Box. SmartThings can apply display effects and create a slideshow. Samsung advises editing or cropping photos before transfer because the TV does not edit the image files for you.

Personal photos are separate from the subscription catalog. Samsung lists “Display All” for personal photos as free, even though the equivalent all-artwork slideshow is a membership feature.

What an Art Store membership adds

On-demand access to thousands of works

A membership is for people who want to choose specific artwork instead of relying on the monthly Streams rotation. Samsung’s support description says subscribers receive unlimited access to current and future artwork in the paid catalog. Samsung’s US pages do not agree on its size: The Frame FAQ says over 4,000 pieces, while the current Art Mode and Art TV pages say over 5,000 works. The defensible description is “thousands of works,” not a single guaranteed catalog total.

Catalog availability can also change. A work may be added, removed, or restricted in a particular country, and a model may not expose every feature shown on a general Art Store page. Check the catalog and membership screen on your own television for the choices available to your account.

Current US pricing

Samsung’s US service FAQ lists the membership at $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. The Frame FAQ independently confirms the $4.99 monthly price. However, an Art Mode page includes a membership image showing an annual price of $49.90. Since those official pages are inconsistent and prices can change, use $4.99 as the currently corroborated monthly figure and verify the annual amount at checkout before paying. The price may also vary outside the United States.

Subscription-only selection features

Samsung lists the “Display All” artwork slideshow as subscription-only. That option is different from displaying your own photos: “Display All” for personal photos remains free. The paid plan therefore changes both the size of the catalog and how broadly you can select or cycle through Samsung’s artwork.

Free Streams versus membership

Feature Free access Art Store membership
Monthly Art Store Streams Yes; Samsung currently describes 30 curated works each month. Yes.
Personal photos Yes, through SmartThings or USB. Yes, with the same photo tools.
Choose from the broader on-demand catalog No; selection is limited to the free offering. Yes; Samsung describes unlimited access to current and future paid artwork.
“Display All” for Samsung artwork No; listed as subscription-only. Yes.
“Display All” for personal photos Yes. Yes.
US price No membership charge. $4.99 monthly is corroborated; annual terms should be checked on the TV because Samsung pages show different figures.

Choose free access if rotating selections and your own photographs meet your needs. Choose membership if selecting particular works, browsing the larger catalog, or using the all-artwork slideshow matters more than avoiding a recurring charge.

How to add your own photos

Method 1: SmartThings

  1. Install and sign in to the SmartThings app with a Samsung Account.
  2. Add your compatible The Frame TV to the app. The phone and TV need an internet connection for SmartThings features.
  3. Open the TV in SmartThings and choose Art Mode.
  4. Select Add Your Photos, choose images on the phone, and apply any available effect or slideshow setting.
  5. Choose Save on The Frame to transfer the selected images to the television.

Prepare the files before transfer. Samsung says the TV itself does not provide photo-editing tools, so correct orientation, cropping, and color adjustments in another app first.

Method 2: USB storage

  1. Copy the prepared images to a USB storage device.
  2. Connect the drive to a USB port on the One Connect Box supplied with your compatible Frame model.
  3. Open Art Mode on the TV and select My Collection.
  4. Choose the connected USB device, select the images you want, and save them to the TV.

One Connect hardware and port arrangements vary by model. If your set does not show the USB source, confirm that the drive is connected to the One Connect Box and consult the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming every Frame generation has identical ports.

How to subscribe from the television

  1. Open Art Store while the TV is in Art Mode.
  2. Choose Membership.
  3. Select Subscribe.
  4. Add or confirm a payment method and review the price, billing interval, cancellation terms, and available catalog shown for your account.
  5. Complete checkout. The membership should then unlock the paid artwork and subscription-only selection options on that TV account.

Samsung’s support guide for obtaining artwork documents this path. The checkout screen is the best authority for the current annual price because Samsung’s public US pages display conflicting annual figures.

Accounts, internet, and regional limitations

  • Samsung Account: Samsung requires an account for Art Store access. SmartThings photo transfer also requires signing in to a Samsung Account.
  • Network connection: Wi-Fi or another internet connection is required for network-based Art Store features, membership validation, rotating Streams, and SmartThings functions. Personal files already saved to the TV can be displayed without browsing the online catalog.
  • Model and country: Samsung states that model and country availability can differ. A feature shown on a US page may not appear on an older model or in another region.
  • Changing terms: Prices, artwork counts, catalog contents, and availability are not fixed specifications. Review the membership screen and local Art Store terms before subscribing.

Samsung’s US lifestyle and Art TV pages provide the broad feature descriptions: Art TV and The Frame Art Mode. Neither page should be read as a worldwide promise.

Common problems and what they mean

The Art Store will not load

Confirm that the TV is connected to the internet and signed in to a Samsung Account. If the account and connection are correct, the issue may be model- or region-specific rather than a missing subscription. Check the Art Store membership and availability screens on the TV, then use Samsung’s support instructions for that model.

You expected more free artwork

The free service is a rotating Stream, not a permanent entitlement to every work Samsung has ever offered. Samsung currently publishes different annual totals—370-plus on one page and 360-plus on another—and says counts can change. A monthly change in selection is normal.

A photo is missing or looks wrong

For SmartThings, verify that the TV is paired in the app and that you tapped Save on The Frame after selecting the image. For USB, reopen My Collection and select the USB source attached to the One Connect Box. Edit orientation and cropping before transfer because the TV does not perform those edits.

The screen turns off unexpectedly

Art Mode’s motion sensor can switch the display on or off when movement is detected, and ambient-light sensing changes brightness and color tone. Those behaviors are part of Art Mode. They are not evidence that the artwork subscription has expired.

What to check before buying or subscribing

  • Verify the exact Frame model and screen size; feature support and One Connect hardware can differ.
  • Decide whether monthly rotating Streams and personal photos are sufficient.
  • If you need specific artwork, confirm that it appears in the catalog available to your account.
  • Review the membership checkout for the current monthly or annual price before confirming payment.
  • Make sure the TV can reach the internet and that you can sign in to a Samsung Account.
  • If appearance matters, remember that customizable bezels are separate accessories and must match the exact model and size.

The Frame’s art experience is therefore usable without a subscription, but the paid service is the route to Samsung’s broader, selectable catalog. Free Streams and personal photos cover the basic “art instead of a blank screen” use case; membership is an optional expansion rather than a requirement for Art Mode itself.
