There is no single Galaxy setting that removes every advertisement. Samsung Internet can use separately installed content-blocking apps, and both Samsung Internet and Chrome can suppress certain pop-ups and redirects. Ads embedded in other apps, promotional notifications, and traffic that bypasses device DNS are different problems. Private DNS or a VPN filter may extend coverage, but neither guarantees ad-free results across every app and website.
What “ad blocking” means on a Galaxy phone
Advertising can reach a Galaxy device through several distinct surfaces. A content blocker operating inside Samsung Internet examines pages loaded in that browser. A pop-up setting targets browser windows and redirects. An ad inside a game, social app, streaming app, or shopping app is delivered through that app’s own code and network requests. A promotional notification is another separate channel.
Those surfaces explain why enabling one control does not produce a system-wide result. Samsung’s own support wording describes browser blockers as apps “that will prevent ads from appearing when you’re browsing.” That is a browser-specific promise, not a guarantee for every application installed on the phone.

Use a content blocker in Samsung Internet
Install and enable a blocker
Samsung Internet does not provide its own filter lists. Samsung’s developer documentation explains that separate applications supply the content-blocking filters. Samsung’s current U.S. support steps are:
#1 Best Overall
- PRIVACY DISPLAY: Automatically hide your screen from those beside you. The built-in privacy display can be preset¹ to turn on when receiving notifications, typing passwords, or using specific apps
- TYPE IT IN. TRANSFORM IT FAST: Enhance any shot in seconds on your smartphone by using Photo Assist² with Galaxy AI.³ Add objects, restore details, or apply new styles by simply typing or tapping
- NIGHTS, CAPTURED CLEARLY: From gigs to city lights, record and capture moments after dark with clarity using Nightography so your photos and videos stay crisp and clear on your Samsung Galaxy
- MAKE IT. EDIT IT. SHARE IT: Turn everyday moments into something personal with creative tools built right into your mobile phone, whether it’s a special contact photo, custom wallpaper, an invitation or more⁴
- HELP THAT KEEPS UP: Stay in the moment while Now Nudge with Galaxy AI helps you respond faster and stay organized with smart suggestions⁵ that appear exactly when you need them on your phone
- Open Samsung Internet.
- Open the browser menu and choose Ad blockers.
- Select a blocker from the listed applications and install it from the Galaxy Store when prompted.
- Return to the Ad blockers menu and use the blocker’s switch to enable or disable it.
Menu names and the list of available blockers can differ by Samsung Internet version, Galaxy model, and region. A blocker listed in one country or app release may not appear on another device.
What this can block
The blocker can hide or prevent requests for content that matches its filter lists while a page is loaded in Samsung Internet. That commonly includes some display advertising, tracking resources, and other page elements identified by the selected lists. The exact result depends on the blocker, its lists, the website, and whether the page’s advertising is delivered in a way the browser can inspect.
What it cannot prove
- It does not apply automatically to Chrome or to pages opened inside another app’s in-app browser.
- It does not control advertising rendered inside games, social apps, video apps, or other third-party software.
- It does not guarantee that every ad on every site will disappear; filter lists can miss new delivery methods or block legitimate page content.
- It does not turn off promotional notifications generated by an installed app.
Block pop-ups in Samsung Internet
Pop-up suppression is narrower than general ad blocking. Samsung’s support instructions place the control at Settings > Privacy dashboard > Block pop-ups in Samsung Internet. Turn it on to reduce browser pop-up windows and related interruptions.
This setting is useful when a site repeatedly opens new windows or sends you through unwanted redirects. It should not be described as a filter for every banner, sponsored result, video commercial, or in-app advertisement. If an ad is part of the page layout rather than a pop-up, the setting may leave it visible.
Chrome controls on a Galaxy
Chrome has its own browser controls. Samsung’s Galaxy guidance lists Settings > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects for managing pop-up behavior. Chrome also exposes Ad privacy controls. These settings concern how Chrome handles pop-ups, redirects, and selected ad-personalization or measurement features; they are not equivalent to installing a general-purpose content blocker in Samsung Internet.

Changing Chrome’s settings will not change Samsung Internet’s filter lists, and enabling a Samsung Internet blocker will not change what Chrome displays. Treat each browser as a separate filtering environment.
Why ads still appear inside apps
In-app advertising is a different surface
An app can draw an advertisement directly in its interface, request an ad from a server, or load a web view. A browser-only blocker is not evidence that those requests or visual elements will be filtered. Even a network filter may have difficulty when advertising and ordinary app content come from the same domain or when the app uses a DNS path that bypasses the phone’s default.
Promotional notifications
If the interruption arrives as a notification, review the notification permission and promotional settings for the app that sent it. This can stop alerts without changing the app’s own screens. Samsung identifies third-party apps as a possible source of persistent pop-up interruptions, so note which app was installed or updated shortly before the behavior began.
A practical investigation sequence
- Record where the message appears: Samsung Internet, Chrome, an in-app screen, a full-screen interruption, or a notification.
- If it is in Samsung Internet, check the browser’s Ad blockers switch and the Block pop-ups setting.
- If it is in Chrome, check Pop-ups and redirects and Chrome’s Ad privacy controls.
- If it appears outside a browser, review recently installed apps and their notification permissions rather than assuming a browser blocker is responsible.
- Test the same website in the browser where the blocker is enabled. A result in another app does not demonstrate that the browser blocker failed.
Private DNS: broader reach, real limits
Android supports a user-specified Private DNS service beginning with Android 9. A filtering DNS resolver compares domain lookups with its block lists and can refuse requests for listed domains. That may reduce requests made by several apps without installing a browser extension.

DNS filtering is not the same as removing an element from a page. It generally sees the requested domain, not the complete page structure. If an advertisement and the desired content are served from the same domain, blocking the domain could break the content or fail to remove only the advert. Conversely, an ad delivered from an unlisted domain will continue to load.
Android’s security guidance also notes that applications can customize their DNS behavior and bypass device defaults. Therefore, a Private DNS configuration can be effective for apps that honor the system path while having little or no effect on an app that uses its own resolver or another connection method.

Sometimes it can block requests to known advertising domains, but there is no dependable yes-or-no promise for a particular game or video service. The app may bypass the configured DNS, use shared domains for ads and content, or deliver advertising through an encrypted or embedded service that the resolver cannot separate.
VPN-based filtering
Android’s VPN framework can route network traffic through a VPN service that applies filtering rules. This can cover more than one browser, but only traffic actually routed through that service is in scope. Android permits only one active VPN service per user or profile at a time. Enabling a filtering VPN can therefore conflict with a work VPN, security VPN, or another VPN application.

Android also documents bypass behavior: a VPN may allow selected apps or traffic to avoid the tunnel. A lockdown configuration can instead block non-VPN traffic. Those are configuration choices, not evidence that every application is filtered. Check which apps are included, whether bypass is enabled, and whether another VPN profile is active.
One vendor explanation illustrates the trade-off: AdBlock’s help documentation says that “network-level ad blocking cannot distinguish first-party ads from actual content.” That is the vendor’s description of the limitation, not an independent measurement. It captures why a network filter can block fewer ads than a dedicated browser blocker while still affecting more than one app.

Ad blocking versus tracking protection
Samsung’s Smart anti-tracking feature is described as protection against cookies and third-party tracking behavior. Ad blocking, by contrast, is provided in Samsung Internet by separately downloaded blocker apps. A page can contain no obvious advertisement yet still use trackers, and a tracker can be blocked while an advertisement remains visible. Enable tracking protection for its privacy benefit, but do not treat fewer trackers as proof that all ads are gone.
Choosing the least disruptive approach
| Your main problem | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New windows or redirects while browsing Samsung Internet | Samsung Internet’s Block pop-ups setting | It directly targets the browser behavior described. |
| Banners and page elements in Samsung Internet | A listed third-party content blocker | It can use browser filter lists to inspect page content. |
| Pop-ups while using Chrome | Chrome’s Pop-ups and redirects setting | Chrome controls its own browser context. |
| Promotional alerts from one app | That app’s notification and in-app settings | The source is the app, not the browser. |
| Known ad domains across several apps | Private DNS, if the apps honor system DNS | It can filter domain requests without a browser extension. |
| Traffic filtering across apps | A VPN-based filter, after checking VPN conflicts | It can cover routed traffic, subject to bypass and implementation limits. |
Common failure modes and fixes
The blocker is enabled, but a site still shows ads
Confirm that the page is open in Samsung Internet, not Chrome or an in-app browser. Then verify the blocker’s switch and recognize that filter lists do not match every advertising technique. A visible element may also be ordinary site content or a sponsored item delivered from the same domain as the article.
Pop-ups continue after enabling the browser setting
Identify which browser is producing them and enable that browser’s own control. If interruptions appear while no browser is open, Samsung says a third-party app may be responsible; investigate recently installed apps and their notification permissions.

Private DNS breaks a site or has no visible effect
A resolver can block an entire domain, including content the page needs, or it can miss an ad served from an unlisted or shared domain. An app may also bypass the device DNS setting. Disable or change the resolver when a required service breaks, and do not interpret an unchanged app as proof that DNS filtering never works.
A filtering VPN will not connect
Check whether another VPN service is already active for the same Android user or profile. Review the filter’s included-app, bypass, and lockdown settings. Those choices determine whether traffic is routed through the filter.
What is not established about Galaxy-wide effectiveness
No dependable, owner-attributed statistic establishes a universal percentage of ads blocked on current Samsung Galaxy devices. Results vary with the Galaxy model, One UI and browser versions, region, blocker lists, websites, apps, and network configuration. A claim such as “blocks 90% of ads” would therefore overstate what the available Samsung and Android documentation supports.
Samsung Internet menus, supported blocker apps, availability, and pricing can change. The controls above describe the documented behavior and paths, while the exact list shown on your phone is determined by its current software and region.
A sensible Galaxy setup
- For Samsung Internet browsing, install and enable one blocker from the browser’s Ad blockers menu.
- Enable Block pop-ups under Settings > Privacy dashboard in Samsung Internet.
- If you use Chrome, configure Settings > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects there as well.
- Keep Smart anti-tracking enabled when your goal is reducing third-party tracking, while understanding that it is not an ad-removal tool.
- Handle app advertisements and promotional notifications at the app level.
- Consider Private DNS or a filtering VPN only when their wider scope is worth the compatibility trade-offs, and check for DNS bypass and VPN conflicts.
The result is layered control rather than a magic switch: browser blockers for browser pages, pop-up settings for browser interruptions, app settings for app-generated promotions, and optional DNS or VPN filtering for traffic that those systems can actually see.
