Sacrificial donors are chemicals that consume photogenerated holes in a photocatalyst. By taking over the difficult oxidation step, they can make proton reduction to hydrogen proceed faster or at lower apparent activation barriers. The trade-off is fundamental: the donor is oxidized, so the experiment is usually donor-assisted hydrogen evolution, not proof that water alone was split into hydrogen and oxygen.

Donors can be omitted only when the catalyst and reactor perform both half-reactions with water: hydrogen evolution at the reduction side and oxygen evolution at the oxidation side. That is overall water splitting (OWS). The distinction determines how hydrogen should be labelled, which controls are necessary, and whether a measured rate says anything about practical solar-fuel production. The methods framework from Peng et al. (2024) and the sustainability critique by Rahman et al. (2026) provide the basis for making that distinction.

What a sacrificial donor does inside a photocatalytic reaction

Light creates the charges that drive chemistry

When a semiconductor photocatalyst absorbs photons with sufficient energy, electrons are promoted to its conduction band and holes remain in the valence band. The electrons can reduce protons to hydrogen. The holes must be consumed by an oxidation reaction or they will recombine with electrons, wasting the absorbed light.

In genuine water splitting, the hole reaction is water oxidation. It is kinetically demanding because several proton-coupled electron-transfer steps must occur before oxygen and, usually, hydrogen peroxide or other intermediates are avoided. The catalyst must also place its band edges at suitable potentials and keep the two charge populations separated long enough to react. Reviews of heterogeneous water-splitting materials describe these requirements as a coupled materials and reaction-engineering problem, not simply a question of whether the catalyst absorbs visible light; see Kudo and Miseki (2009) and the later review by Li et al. (2024).

The donor supplies an easier hole reaction

A sacrificial donor is an oxidizable substance added to react rapidly with holes. Alcohols, amines, thiols and related compounds are common choices. Examples listed in the 2024 protocol literature include methanol, triethylamine, triethanolamine, cysteine, thiols and ascorbic acid. The donor is not a catalyst: it is consumed or transformed as the reaction proceeds.

The donor’s oxidation removes holes from the photocatalyst surface. That suppresses electron-hole recombination and leaves more conduction-band electrons available for proton reduction. The measured hydrogen-evolution rate can therefore rise even though the water-oxidation half-reaction is no longer being tested. The methods primer by Nishioka et al. (2023) describes sacrificial reagents as fast electron donors or acceptors that may be irreversibly decomposed and can change both reaction energetics and rate.

Why the word “sacrificial” matters

Because the donor is oxidized, the experiment has an additional reactant and an additional product stream. Depending on the molecule and catalyst, oxidation can generate aldehydes, ketones, acids, coupled products or smaller fragments. Those products are part of the reaction accounting; they are not an incidental detail. A donor may also provide hydrogen-bearing equivalents in some systems, so the hydrogen atoms in H2 cannot automatically be assigned to water merely because water is present in the reactor.

Donor-assisted hydrogen evolution is not automatically overall water splitting

The two labels answer different scientific questions. “Sacrificial-agent-assisted hydrogen evolution” means that hydrogen was detected while an added compound consumed holes. “Overall water splitting” means that water supplied the redox chemistry and that both hydrogen and oxygen were produced in the expected stoichiometric relationship without a sacrificial additive.

Comparison point Donor-assisted hydrogen evolution Overall water splitting
Hole-consuming reaction Oxidation of an added donor Water oxidation to oxygen
Source of oxidation equivalents The donor, with its own oxidation products Water
Gas evidence required Hydrogen may be observed without oxygen Hydrogen and oxygen should both be measured and chemically consistent
What the hydrogen rate demonstrates Performance of a reduction pathway under donor-assisted conditions Coupled operation of both half-reactions
Scale-up implication Requires continuous donor supply and handling of oxidation products Aims to use water as the feedstock, subject to catalyst, separation and stability constraints

Calling a donor-containing result “water splitting” can therefore overstate what was shown. Rahman et al. (2026) argue that sacrificial oxidation is fundamentally different from OWS and that performance metrics from donor systems should not be directly extrapolated to practical solar-fuel generation. That is a stated position in an opinion article, not a universally accepted quantitative threshold, but the chemical distinction is clear: a consumable donor changes the feedstock and the oxidation pathway.

When can photocatalytic hydrogen be produced without a sacrificial agent?

The catalyst must carry both half-reactions

Donors can be left out when the reaction architecture supports proton reduction and water oxidation at the same time. In a simplified overall reaction, electrons reduce protons to H2 while holes oxidize water to O2. A practical donor-free system needs:

  • Conduction- and valence-band potentials that are thermodynamically capable of the two reactions under the chosen pH.
  • Efficient separation and transport of electrons and holes so that each reaches the appropriate active site.
  • Surface catalysts or active sites that lower the kinetic barriers for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution.
  • A reactor configuration that prevents rapid back-reaction between the gases or between hydrogen and oxygen on the catalyst.
  • Photochemical and chemical stability over the full irradiation period.

Removing the donor does not simply mean omitting one line from a recipe. It exposes the slow oxidation chemistry, increases the importance of charge recombination, and makes catalyst poisoning, corrosion and gas crossover more consequential.

What the published donor-free examples establish

A 2016 paper titled “Overall water splitting by Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalysts without using sacrificial agents” reports a donor-free Pt/g-C3N4 system; the article is available at Chemical Science. The existence of that report demonstrates that donor-free OWS is experimentally possible in at least one reported architecture. It does not, by itself, establish broad reproducibility across catalysts, high efficiency, long-term durability or commercial readiness. Those points require matched tests under independently reported conditions.

How researchers determine where the hydrogen comes from

Gas detection alone answers “was hydrogen formed?” It does not necessarily answer “which reactant supplied its hydrogen atoms?” The 2024 protocol from Peng et al. recommends combining isotope experiments with analysis of donor-oxidation products.

  1. Run a water-only control. Use the same catalyst, reactor, light source and irradiation time without donor. Record hydrogen and oxygen separately, along with catalyst loading, pH and gas-analysis conditions.
  2. Run the donor-containing reaction. Keep all non-donor variables fixed and quantify the donor concentration before and after irradiation. A higher hydrogen rate in this comparison shows donor assistance, not automatically OWS.
  3. Label the water and the donor in separate experiments. Use deuterium-labelled water and a deuterium-labelled donor as appropriate to the system. The purpose is to create distinguishable hydrogen inventories rather than to rely on a pH change.
  4. Measure H2, HD and D2. The isotopologue distribution provides evidence about which labelled reservoir contributed to the gas. Report the analytical method and detection limits so that “not detected” is not confused with zero formation.
  5. Identify donor-oxidation products. Product analysis helps establish whether the donor was consumed and what chemistry accompanied hydrogen evolution. Isotope data without oxidation-product data can be ambiguous.
  6. Check for isotope scrambling. Proton/deuterium exchange can occur in solution or on catalyst surfaces. Mixed H2/HD/D2 therefore requires mechanistic interpretation; it is not a simple one-to-one label map.
  7. Measure oxygen or another complete oxidation product. In a donor-free claim, oxygen evolution is central evidence. In a donor-containing claim, the donor products identify the alternative hole sink.

A pH shift by itself cannot establish proton provenance. Exchange reactions can move hydrogen and deuterium between water, donor and surface intermediates without changing the overall pH enough to reveal the source.

A system-specific example: Pt@TiO2 with THF

In the particular Pt@TiO2/tetrahydrofuran (THF) case examined by Peng and co-workers, product and isotope analyses found THF-derived dimers. The authors interpreted their results as showing that water initially supplies protons, while THF acts as the formal proton source and water functions as a proton shuttle. That conclusion belongs to this catalyst, solvent and set of conditions; it is not a universal mechanism for alcohols, amines or thiols.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The same report found almost no detectable hydrogen from Pt@TiO2 in pure water during four hours under its stated irradiation conditions, whereas adding methanol increased the observed hydrogen-evolution rate. Those observations illustrate why a donor can reveal a catalyst’s reduction capability while simultaneously masking the difficulty of water oxidation. They should not be treated as a product ranking or as a prediction for other photocatalysts.

How donor identity changes the experiment

Donor class or example What it changes What must be reported
Alcohols such as methanol Provides an oxidizable substrate that can consume holes and alter hydrogen rate Concentration, solvent composition, conversion and identified oxidation products
Amines such as triethylamine or triethanolamine Acts as a fast hole scavenger in many photocatalytic formulations and changes solution composition pH, amine concentration, product analysis and whether the amine is depleted
Thiols or cysteine Offers sulfur-containing oxidation chemistry that may strongly affect surface sites Donor conversion, sulfur-containing products and catalyst stability
Ascorbic acid Changes redox conditions and solution acidity while supplying an oxidizable molecule pH, concentration, speciation and oxidation products

The table describes roles, not a universal ranking. A donor that performs well with one semiconductor can poison another, block active sites, absorb light, change ionic strength or alter the catalyst surface. The correct comparison is therefore within a controlled study, not across unrelated papers.

How to compare hydrogen-evolution rates fairly

Hydrogen rates from different setups are not directly comparable unless the main experimental variables match. At minimum, record and align:

  • Catalyst loading and geometry: total mass, illuminated area, particle dispersion and whether the catalyst is suspended or immobilized.
  • Illumination: wavelength or spectrum, incident intensity, illuminated volume, optical path and whether the source is calibrated at the reactor.
  • Reaction composition: donor identity and concentration, water volume, pH, dissolved gases, co-catalyst loading and buffer or electrolyte.
  • Reactor design: headspace, stirring or flow rate, gas-tightness, temperature control and any membrane or gas-separation step.
  • Analysis: gas-chromatography calibration, sampling intervals, detection limits, wet- versus dry-gas correction and whether the rate is normalized per mass, area or active site.
  • Time and stability: initial rate versus average rate, donor depletion, catalyst deactivation and repeat-run variability.

A high donor-assisted rate can be useful for diagnosing charge transfer or testing a hydrogen-evolution co-catalyst. It cannot be converted into an OWS efficiency claim without oxygen data and a demonstrated water-only oxidation pathway.

A practical workflow for deciding whether to use a donor

Use a donor when the experimental question is reduction-side diagnosis

A donor is appropriate when the immediate goal is to test whether photogenerated electrons can reduce protons, compare co-catalysts, study charge-transfer kinetics or obtain enough hydrogen for mechanistic analysis. State the result as donor-assisted hydrogen evolution, identify the donor and quantify its conversion. This wording keeps the conclusion aligned with the chemistry actually measured.

Avoid a donor when the claim is overall water splitting

If the objective is OWS, begin with a water-only formulation and design the experiment around simultaneous H2 and O2 measurement. Add isotope controls if the hydrogen source is uncertain. If hydrogen appears only after a donor is added, classify the result as donor-assisted unless the complete water-oxidation evidence is subsequently established.

Use paired controls rather than a single “with donor” run

  1. Measure the dark baseline to identify background gas formation or contamination.
  2. Measure illuminated water without donor.
  3. Measure illuminated donor solution without catalyst, when safe and chemically meaningful.
  4. Measure illuminated catalyst with donor.
  5. Analyze both gas products and liquid-phase donor products.
  6. Repeat the sequence after extended irradiation to test whether the rate is sustained or reflects a short-lived surface state.

Common failure modes and how to interpret them

Hydrogen rises, but oxygen is absent

The most likely interpretation is donor-assisted reduction, oxygen detection failure or an unbalanced oxidation pathway. Check oxygen calibration, leaks and sampling before making a mechanistic claim. If donor oxidation products are present, the donor is serving as the hole sink.

Hydrogen falls as irradiation continues

Possible causes include donor depletion, catalyst photocorrosion, surface poisoning by oxidation products, loss of active co-catalyst or gas-analysis drift. Measure the donor and liquid products over time rather than reporting only the initial hydrogen rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isotope results contain all three isotopologues

H2, HD and D2 can arise from exchange and mixing of hydrogen reservoirs. Repeat with separate labels, analyze donor products and account for proton/deuterium exchange before assigning a source.

The water-only control produces little or no hydrogen

This result does not prove the catalyst is inactive. It may indicate that water oxidation, charge separation or surface kinetics limit the coupled reaction. A donor can bypass the oxidation bottleneck and expose reduction-side activity, but the donor-assisted rate should not be relabelled as OWS performance.

What donor use means for sustainability and scale-up

At laboratory scale, a sacrificial donor can simplify experiments and improve signal-to-noise. At process scale, the donor becomes a feedstock that must be manufactured, transported, added continuously or recovered, and converted into products that require separation or disposal. The net environmental benefit depends on donor origin, stoichiometric consumption, product toxicity, recycling options, reactor productivity and the energy used for purification.

Rahman et al. (2026) frame this resource and waste burden as a sustainability problem for scalable photocatalytic hydrogen production. Their argument is a critical perspective rather than a settled life-cycle consensus, so a fair assessment should report the donor balance and downstream treatment instead of assuming that a higher hydrogen rate is automatically a greener process.

A decision rule for reading published results

Ask five questions before comparing any reported hydrogen number:

  1. Was a sacrificial donor present, and was it consumed?
  2. Was oxygen measured under the same conditions?
  3. Were donor-oxidation products identified?
  4. Were isotope controls used to test whether hydrogen came from water, donor or both?
  5. Are catalyst loading, illumination, reactor, concentration and analytical methods matched to the comparison being made?

If the answer to the first question is yes and the remaining evidence is incomplete, the defensible description is donor-assisted hydrogen evolution. If water-only operation produces both gases with appropriate controls, the result supports an overall-water-splitting claim. Keeping those categories separate prevents a convenient laboratory proxy from being mistaken for a complete solar-fuel process.
