Short answer: Ryobi does not publish one indicator-light key that applies to every battery, voltage platform, revision, and blink pattern. The reliable interpretation comes from the exact battery model’s manual or support page. First determine whether the light is on the battery or on the charger; then record whether it is steady or blinking and match those details to the model-specific documentation.

Why there is no single Ryobi battery-light legend

Ryobi sells batteries across several platforms, including 18V ONE+, 40V, and 80V systems. A light on a battery is not automatically governed by the same meaning as a light on a charger, and a pattern used by one model or revision may not be documented for another. The official support material available for this question provides model lookup and service routes, but it does not establish a universal table translating every battery light or blink pattern into “full,” “charging,” “hot,” “cold,” or “failed.”

That means a statement such as “a flashing green light always means a bad Ryobi battery” is too broad unless the manual for that particular battery says so. Treat the light as a model-specific diagnostic clue, not a universal error code.

Start with the exact battery model and platform

Before interpreting a light, read the label on the battery and write down its complete model number. Ryobi says the model number is usually printed on the product label and generally begins with a letter such as P or RY. The platform and voltage are also useful: for example, an 18V ONE+ battery and a 40V battery are different systems even if their indicator windows look similar.

  • Provides up to 4 times the run time of standard lithium
  • Provides up to 30 Percent more power than standard lithium
  • 225+ ONE+ Tools All work with any RYOBI ONE + 18V battery

Use Ryobi’s support page to search that model. The page instructs users: “Enter your product model number for manuals, parts, and repair info.” Open the manual or support entry for the exact model rather than selecting a visually similar battery: RYOBI Tools Support.

Record the following information before you search:

  • Complete model number, including suffixes such as “A” where printed.
  • Voltage platform: 18V ONE+, 40V, 80V, or another label shown on the battery.
  • Number and color of the lights.
  • Whether the light is steady, pulsing, or flashing.
  • Whether the battery is installed in a tool, connected to a charger, or removed from both.
  • What happened immediately beforehand, such as a charging attempt or tool shutdown.

Confirm whether the light is on the battery or the charger

This is the most important first split. A charger’s LED is designed to communicate the charger’s view of the charging process. A light built into the battery may have a different purpose, and the available official pages do not provide a common key for every battery-mounted indicator.

Battery-mounted indicators

For a battery-mounted light, use the exact battery manual or support entry. Do not transfer a color or blink interpretation from a charger manual, another Ryobi platform, or an online comment. If the manual does not describe the pattern, the light alone does not prove that the pack is full, empty, overheated, or defective.

Charger-mounted indicators

Ryobi product listings describe charger LEDs as showing battery charge status. That wording applies to the charger’s indicator system; it is not a universal decoder for lights found on every battery.

What the documented charger examples tell you

Two official charger listings illustrate why the charger model must be identified separately from the battery model.

Charger Platform compatibility stated by Ryobi What its LEDs are described as showing What this does not establish
OP4011A RYOBI 40V lithium-ion batteries Battery charge status A universal meaning for lights on 40V batteries, or a diagnosis of battery failure
PCG007 18V ONE+ or 40V batteries Battery charge status That every 18V or 40V battery uses the same indicator colors or blink patterns

Ryobi identifies the OP4011A as a 40V 2A lithium-ion charger and says its LED indicator lights show battery charge status: OP4011A product page. The PCG007 is listed as an 18V/40V dual-platform charger, with LEDs that show battery charge status: PCG007 product page. These descriptions support reading the charger’s LEDs as charging-status information, but they do not supply a battery-specific blink table.

A reliable step-by-step method for reading the light

  1. Remove ambiguity about location. Look at the physical location of the light. Is it molded into the battery housing, or is it on the charger body? Photograph the label and the indicator if the model number is difficult to read.
  2. Capture the exact pattern. Note the color, number of segments, steady or flashing behavior, and whether the pattern repeats. A short video can be more useful than a description such as “it blinks weirdly.”
  3. Check the operating context. Record whether the battery is in a tool, inserted into a charger, or sitting by itself. Note whether the charger is connected to mains power and whether another battery produces a different result in the same charger.
  4. Search by model number. Enter the complete battery or charger model in Ryobi’s support search and open the matching manual or repair information. Do not stop at a search result for a similar-looking product.
  5. Use only the instructions for that model. If the manual defines the observed color and pattern, follow its stated action. If it does not define the pattern, do not assign a diagnosis based on a generic chart.
  6. Repeat the observation once under the manual’s conditions. If the manual specifies how the battery should be seated or how long to wait, follow those instructions exactly. Record the result rather than changing several variables at once.
  7. Escalate when the documentation cannot resolve it. Keep the model number, purchase or warranty information, charger model, and your pattern notes available when contacting Ryobi support.

How to use the pattern without over-diagnosing the battery

Readers commonly want to map a light directly to a fault. The safer interpretation is narrower: the pattern tells you what the model documentation says to do, if the documentation defines it. A light by itself is not evidence that the battery has failed.

If the light is steady

For a charger, consult that charger’s manual because the LED is intended to communicate charging status. For a battery, look for the exact battery model’s description. “Steady” is not a cross-platform definition of full charge or normal operation.

If the light is blinking

Write down the color and rhythm, then compare it with the model-specific manual. Do not assume that a blinking light means the same thing on an 18V ONE+ battery, a 40V battery, and a different revision of either platform. If no official entry defines the pattern, the correct conclusion is that the available documentation does not decode it, not that the battery is automatically defective.

If there is no light

First determine whether that model is supposed to have an indicator in the situation you are testing. A battery-mounted indicator and a charger-mounted LED are separate systems. Check the manual’s normal operating conditions and use Ryobi’s model support page if the expected behavior is not documented.

If the light changes when you move the battery

Stop trying to infer a code from the change alone. Document the exact setup, including the charger and tool models, and provide that information to Ryobi support. The change may be relevant to troubleshooting, but it is not a universal proof of a particular fault.

When to contact Ryobi instead of guessing

Contact support when the exact manual does not explain the observed pattern, when the battery and charger behavior conflict with the manual, or when you need a service or replacement decision. Have the model number and your notes ready. Include whether the light is on the battery or charger, the observed color and rhythm, and what happened when you followed the documented procedure.

Ryobi’s battery support page separates in-warranty and out-of-warranty routes. For a battery that is still under warranty, Ryobi directs customers to contact customer service about a replacement. For specified out-of-warranty 4V, 18V, 24V, 40V, and 80V batteries, the page directs customers to Home Depot: RYOBI Batteries & Chargers — Service & Support.

This route is more reliable than replacing a battery solely because an unexplained light is blinking. Confirming the model and warranty status first can prevent sending the wrong product for service or buying a replacement unnecessarily.

Choosing a charger only after compatibility is confirmed

A charger can be relevant if your troubleshooting shows that the charger is the part requiring attention, but a new charger is not a universal fix for an unexplained battery indicator. Check the exact battery platform and the charger’s stated compatibility before using one.

  • The OP4011A listing states compatibility with Ryobi 40V lithium-ion batteries.
  • The PCG007 listing states compatibility with 18V ONE+ or 40V batteries.
  • Neither listing establishes a universal battery-indicator code or says that buying that charger diagnoses every battery-light problem.

Use the charger model’s own manual and product information for its LEDs, and use the battery model’s documentation for any battery-mounted indicator.

A quick worksheet for your support request

Copy this information into your notes before contacting support:

  • Battery model: the complete label, including suffix.
  • Battery platform: voltage and product family.
  • Charger model: if a charger is involved.
  • Indicator location: battery or charger.
  • Pattern: color, steady or blinking, segment count, and repeat interval.
  • Conditions: battery in tool, battery in charger, or disconnected.
  • Observed result: what changed after following the manual’s instructions.
  • Purchase and warranty details: needed for service or replacement routing.

That information lets support match your question to the correct manual and platform instead of applying a generic online interpretation.

The practical answer to “What does this blinking light mean?”

It means whatever the documentation for that exact Ryobi battery or charger model defines—and the official material available for Ryobi’s product range does not provide one universal battery-light chart. Identify the model, separate battery indicators from charger LEDs, document the precise pattern, and use Ryobi’s model-specific support and warranty channels when the manual does not resolve it.
