I’m keeping my RTX 4090 until a successor delivers about twice its performance in the games and settings I actually use—not just a higher frame-rate counter produced with generated frames. NVIDIA says the RTX 5090 is twice as fast as the RTX 4090 in a DLSS 4 comparison, but that is a conditional, vendor-reported result, not proof of a universal 2× gain in native rendering. And while “probably years away” is a reasonable personal guess about the next major leap, NVIDIA has not announced a timetable for it.

Is the RTX 5090 twice as fast as the RTX 4090?

NVIDIA’s product comparison describes the RTX 5090 as delivering 2× the RTX 4090’s performance with Blackwell and DLSS 4. The conditions matter: NVIDIA’s comparison is at 4K and maximum settings, with DLSS Super Resolution and Ray Reconstruction enabled on both cards, Frame Generation on the RTX 40 Series, and Multi Frame Generation in 4X mode on the RTX 50 Series. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page and its January 2025 launch announcement present this as a DLSS-enabled comparison, not a universal native-rendering result.

That distinction changes what “twice as fast” means. A GPU can render a frame conventionally, then use AI to generate additional frames between rendered ones. The displayed frame rate can rise substantially, but the card has not necessarily rendered twice as many unique frames from the game itself. NVIDIA says DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can generate up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame and claims up to 8× frame-rate multiplication over brute-force rendering. Those are NVIDIA capability claims about generated frame rates, not native-rendering benchmark results. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 explanation describes the feature.

So the precise answer is: the RTX 5090 is “twice as fast” in NVIDIA’s specified DLSS comparison. The cited information does not establish that it is twice as fast in native rendering across games or workloads. An independent, representative cross-game native-performance average is not established here, so a single universal percentage would overstate what is known.

What counts as a meaningful 2× upgrade?

For an upgrade decision, compare the cards under conditions that match how you play. A useful test should disclose whether it uses native resolution or upscaling; whether Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation is on; whether ray tracing or path tracing is active; and which resolution, image-quality preset, games, and driver conditions were used. If any of those change between cards, the resulting frame-rate comparison may not answer whether the new GPU is twice as fast for your use.

  • Native rendering: Count conventionally rendered frames separately from AI-generated frames. If the question is raw rendering performance, look for results with frame generation disabled.
  • Upscaling and ray tracing: Treat these as explicit test settings, not incidental details. A result with DLSS or ray tracing enabled is not directly interchangeable with one without it.
  • Your workload: Consider the games you play, your target resolution and refresh rate, and the image quality you want. A large headline gain may not matter if your current card already meets those targets.
  • Ownership costs: Include the purchase price, power draw, cooling and case constraints, and any other changes needed to install the card.

With a high-end GPU already in your system, a percentage alone is a poor reason to upgrade. The practical threshold is whether the improvement solves a real limitation—such as failing to maintain your target frame rate at your preferred settings—enough to justify the total cost and hardware demands.

Why wait for a later GPU instead of moving to the RTX 5090?

The RTX 5090 is the direct flagship comparison to the RTX 4090, and NVIDIA announced it with a starting price of $1,999 in January 2025. That is a historical launch price, not a statement of current retail pricing or stock. NVIDIA’s announcement also lists 32 GB of GDDR7 memory and 1,792 GB/s of memory bandwidth for the RTX 5090. For context, NVIDIA’s launch-era RTX 4090 specifications list 24 GB of GDDR6X memory and 450 W power consumption. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 specifications provide those figures.

Those specifications can inform a purchase, but they do not settle whether the upgrade is worthwhile for a particular owner. If the RTX 4090 already meets your needs, waiting avoids spending on a card whose advertised advantage depends partly on generated frames. If you want DLSS 4’s features or the RTX 5090’s other capabilities now, the decision can still make sense—but it is a feature-and-use-case upgrade, not a demonstrated 2× native-rendering upgrade.

When will NVIDIA’s next GPU arrive?

There is no cited launch date or commitment for the GeForce generation after the RTX 5090, and no established promise that it will deliver 2× native performance. At CES in January 2026, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang discussed neural rendering as the direction for graphics and said traditional rasterization’s limits were hard to predict. Tom’s Hardware reported his remarks from a Q&A in Las Vegas: “I think that the answer is hard to predict. Maybe another way of saying it is that the future is neural rendering. It is basically DLSS. That’s the way graphics ought to be.” The report describes a view about graphics technology, not a roadmap announcement.

That makes “probably years away” a personal forecast, not a confirmed schedule. A future card could reach a 2× displayed frame rate through some combination of rendering and AI-generated frames before it reaches 2× native performance. Until NVIDIA or independent testing supplies a clearly defined comparison, the threshold needs to specify which kind of performance you mean.
