A router’s security-update policy is part of its usable lifespan. Before buying, find the exact model and hardware revision, identify the published end date for vulnerability fixes in your country, and confirm that firmware is delivered and verified securely. A router can remain on sale or keep working after security support ends, but if the vendor offers no supported update path, replacement is the practical risk-management decision.

Why a router’s support policy matters

Your router sits between every device in your home or small office and the internet. Its firmware controls the wireless network, firewall, remote-management services, VPN features and, on some gateways, the connection credentials supplied by your internet provider. A defect in that software can therefore affect the network even when your laptops and phones are fully patched.

Support policy tells you how long the manufacturer intends to correct vulnerabilities and how you will receive those corrections. It does not tell you that every device becomes dangerous on a particular day. An unsupported router may continue to operate without a known exploitable flaw, while a supported model may still have an unpatched vulnerability between disclosure and a fix. The policy is a forward-looking assurance about access to fixes, not a safety certificate.

Separate the lifecycle dates that vendors publish

Manufacturers often use several end-of-life milestones. They are not interchangeable, and the date shown in a product listing may describe only one of them.

Milestone What it normally means Buyer question
End of sale The vendor stops selling the model through its own channels or stops accepting new orders. Will the unit still receive security fixes after sales stop?
End of software-maintenance releases Routine software development or planned maintenance releases end. Are vulnerability fixes covered by a later security-support period?
End of vulnerability or security support The vendor’s stated deadline for correcting newly identified security issues. What exact date applies to this model, hardware revision and region?
Last date of support The final date for the broader support program, which can include technical assistance, contracts or replacement services. Does technical help end on the same date as security fixes, or earlier?

Cisco’s lifecycle notices demonstrate why the distinction matters. A July 2026 notice for specified C1112, C1113, C1116, C1117, C1131 and C1161 integrated services routers lists January 31, 2027 as the end-of-sale date and January 31, 2028 as the end of software-maintenance releases. It treats vulnerability or security support as a separate milestone, followed by a separate last date of support. Those are enterprise-device dates for the named models, not a timetable for consumer routers.

How long does a router get security updates?

There is no industry-wide lifetime. Policies differ by manufacturer, product family, hardware revision, sales date and country. A statement made for one brand or a carrier-supplied gateway cannot be used as a universal rule.

NETGEAR’s general end-of-support policy

NETGEAR says its products generally reach end of service three years after the last sale. It also says the last-sale date can vary by SKU and region, so the three-year figure is a general policy rather than a guaranteed industry standard. Its policy states that products at end of service no longer receive firmware updates, including important security updates. Use the manufacturer’s model lookup to determine the actual date for the unit you are considering.

TP-Link’s model-specific advisory

In an advisory dated November 9, 2024, TP-Link identified certain products as having reached end of service and no longer receiving active support, including security updates. The same advisory described a vulnerability-specific firmware release for listed products. That combination is a useful warning: a vendor can publish a one-time remediation for an end-of-service device without promising continuing support. Check the exact model, hardware revision, region and advisory rather than assuming that one patch resets the support clock.

ASUS and geographic limits

ASUS maintains a router support page for a Singapore-specific program. The page, updated September 3, 2026, lists end dates for selected models and says extended support may be provided after the stated dates. A date on that page should not be transplanted to another country or treated as a brand-wide commitment. Geographic scope is part of the policy.

What a trustworthy update program looks like

A long support period is valuable only if updates arrive through a mechanism that resists tampering and gives you a realistic chance of installing them.

Published minimum period

The UK National Cyber Security Centre says, “It’s important that device updates are installed securely,” and recommends that manufacturers publish the minimum period during which a device will receive security updates. The period should be easy to find and tied to the model or product family, not hidden behind a vague promise of support.

The same guidance recommends disclosing when device components depend on third-party security updates and stating those components’ support lifetimes. A router can include a wireless chipset, operating-system package, web interface, cloud service or mobile application whose security depends on another supplier. Ask whether the published date covers all of those dependencies.

Authenticated and protected firmware

Updates should come from a trusted source and be checked so the router can reject a modified package. NIST’s February 2024 preliminary consumer-grade router profile describes components receiving, verifying and applying signed and encrypted software updates. It also describes protection against rollback attacks, preservation of configuration integrity and recovery to a usable state after a failed update.

That NIST document is preliminary design guidance, not a binding regulation and not proof that a particular retail router meets every recommendation. Nevertheless, its controls are useful questions for a buyer: Does the device verify a digital signature? Is the download encrypted in transit? Can an attacker force installation of an older, vulnerable firmware version? Does a failed update leave a recovery path?

Automatic delivery and clear notification

NIST’s profile describes either automatic application of current software or consistent customer notification. Automatic updates reduce the chance that a busy household ignores a fix, but some buyers need a maintenance window or change control. Look for a setting that explains whether updates are automatic, scheduled, manually approved or disabled by default, and whether the router records the installed version and update result.

A buyer’s step-by-step support check

  1. Record the exact identity. Copy the model number, hardware revision and, where shown, regional identifier from the label, box or product listing. A name such as a product family is not enough; revisions can have different firmware and dates.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s official support or end-of-service page. Search for that exact model and select the buyer’s country or market. If the page offers a lifecycle lookup, enter the model there rather than relying on a retailer’s description.
  3. Read the date definition. Determine whether the displayed date is end of sale, end of software maintenance, end of vulnerability/security support or the last date of general support. Record each date separately when several are listed.
  4. Check the commitment’s scope. Confirm that the date applies to the hardware revision being purchased and to every region in which the router will be used. Check whether cloud services, mobile apps, bundled security components or ISP-specific software have their own lifetimes.
  5. Inspect update mechanics. Look for automatic updates or dependable notifications, signed or otherwise authenticated firmware, encrypted delivery, rollback protection and a documented recovery process. A policy that states only “firmware available when needed” leaves important details unanswered.
  6. Ask the ISP about compatibility. If the router is replacing an ISP gateway, confirm supported connection types, authentication requirements, voice or television features, IPv6 settings and whether the provider requires its own managed equipment.
  7. Save the evidence. Keep a copy of the lifecycle page, the date you checked it and the installed firmware version. Vendor pages can change, and this record helps when you need to determine whether a later notice applies.

How to compare two supported routers

Security support should be compared alongside ordinary networking requirements. Use the following axes rather than ranking products by a single promised number of years.

Best Value
TP-Link AC1200 Gigabit Dual Band WiFi Router (Archer A6) | MU-MIMO Wireless Internet Router, 4 x Antennas, OneMesh and AP Mode, Long Range Coverage
  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Comparison axis What to verify Why it affects the purchase
Commitment length and clarity A minimum security-update period or an exact end date tied to the model. A precise commitment is easier to plan around than an indefinite statement.
Scope Hardware revision, country, sales channel and dependent components or apps. A date that excludes your revision or region may not protect the unit you buy.
Delivery and integrity Automatic updates or reliable notices; authenticated, tamper-resistant firmware; rollback protection and recovery. Fixes help only when they can be delivered and installed safely.
Meaning of each milestone Separate sale, maintenance, vulnerability-fix and general-support dates. Prevents you from mistaking a sales deadline for a security deadline.
Network fit Coverage, wired-port speed, wireless capacity, ISP compatibility and required features. A long policy is not useful if the router cannot serve your home or connection.
Total cost Purchase price, any required service subscription and the cost of eventual replacement. Support is part of the ownership cost, not an isolated specification.

What happens when a router reaches end of life?

At security end of support, the manufacturer may stop issuing fixes for newly discovered vulnerabilities. It may also stop answering technical questions, providing replacement hardware or maintaining cloud functions, depending on the policy. The router can continue forwarding traffic, and its wireless radios can continue to work, but there is no longer a supported path for correcting future defects.

Do not describe every unsupported router as already compromised. A specific security conclusion requires evidence about a particular vulnerability, configuration and exposure. The support decision is different: if the exact model has passed its security-support date and no vendor-supported update path exists, plan to replace it instead of relying on an unsupported device indefinitely.

Check for an exceptional, supported remediation

Before replacing, search the vendor’s current advisory database for the exact model and revision. An end-of-service notice can coexist with a one-time fix for a serious vulnerability, as TP-Link’s November 2024 advisory illustrates. Install such a release only through the vendor’s documented channel, and do not interpret it as a new guarantee of ongoing security maintenance.

Ask whether the ISP supplies a supported gateway

Some internet providers supply or require a managed gateway. Ask whether the provider will replace an obsolete unit, whether bridge mode is available, and which features stop working when you use your own router. A supported ISP gateway can be a practical replacement path, but its policy and update responsibilities should still be documented.

Replacing and retiring an unsupported router

Choose a replacement using the comparison axes above, then migrate deliberately. Record broadband credentials and special settings, configure the new router with a different administrator password, install its current firmware, and verify that automatic-update or notification settings are enabled. Reconnect clients in stages so that an incompatible device does not force you back to the old router.

When retiring equipment, follow the manufacturer’s reset and account-removal instructions. NETGEAR specifically recommends a factory reset, unregistering an end-of-service product from the associated account and using an appropriate electronics-recycling route. A reset helps remove local configuration and credentials; it does not extend support or erase the manufacturer’s lifecycle status.

Common policy mistakes to avoid

  • Equating continued sale with continued security support. Retail stock can remain available after a security-support deadline, and a used router can be much older than its purchase date.
  • Using a brand-wide age estimate. NETGEAR’s general three-year-after-last-sale statement is not an industry rule, and last-sale timing varies by SKU and region.
  • Ignoring geography. The ASUS list is explicitly for Singapore; another country may have different dates or no listed program.
  • Reading one lifecycle date as the whole policy. Cisco’s separate sale, software-maintenance, security-support and last-support milestones show why each label matters.
  • Treating a single emergency patch as ongoing maintenance. A vulnerability-specific release for an end-of-service product does not promise future fixes.
  • Assuming an update is safe because it is available. Confirm that the router authenticates firmware, protects delivery and can recover from a failed installation.
  • Replacing without checking the connection. A router that lacks the ISP’s required authentication, voice, television or IPv6 features may leave you offline despite having a longer support commitment.
