A review embargo is the date and time when critics with advance access are allowed to publish. A review period is the amount of time a critic has to play and assess the game before that deadline. They are related, but neither is a quality score. A late embargo can reflect spoiler concerns, live-service testing or publisher policy; a short review period can leave reviewers unable to finish a long campaign or test launch-day features. To judge a game fairly, examine the reviewer’s access time, build, servers, modes tested and whether the article is provisional.

What a review embargo actually controls

Publishers sometimes give selected critics a game before its public release so reviews can be prepared. The publisher and participating outlets then agree on a review embargo: a specific date and time before which those reviews cannot be published.

The embargo is a publication rule, not a statement about the game’s quality. It coordinates when participating outlets go live. Kotaku has described synchronized timing as potentially useful because it reduces pressure to publish first at the expense of careful reporting. The same access agreement may also limit what a critic can show or discuss before launch, including gameplay footage, screenshots, story details or spoilers.

Terms differ by publisher, game and outlet. Some critics receive a complete build; others receive a restricted preview version. An agreement might permit a written review but prohibit video, or allow discussion of early areas while withholding late-game story information. “The embargo” therefore does not describe one universal contract.

Embargo date versus review period

The review period is the practical window in which a reviewer can play, test and write before publication. It begins when access is granted and ends at the embargo deadline or, for a post-launch review, when the outlet decides it has enough evidence.

Those dates can be far apart or uncomfortably close. Big Games Machine’s 2024 survey reports that review codes are sometimes sent less than two weeks before release, and in some cases only one week before release. A large game can require more than 50 hours to complete, so a critic receiving a key shortly before the deadline may have to choose which systems, missions or modes to examine.

Conversely, a critic can receive access weeks ahead but still lack something important: a functioning multiplayer population, final server configuration, launch-day patch or endgame activity. A long calendar window does not guarantee comprehensive testing, and a short one does not prove that the publisher is hiding a problem.

Why embargo timing is a weak quality signal

There is no authoritative, broadly applicable statistic showing a typical game-review embargo length, and no reliable evidence that a particular embargo hour predicts whether a game is good or bad. Treating the clock as a score shortcut turns a scheduling decision into a conclusion it cannot support.

A late date can have an ordinary explanation

Publishers may delay reviews to reduce spoilers, to synchronize a global release or to ensure that online features are available. In one reported case involving No More Heroes 3, a publisher initially set the embargo for nine hours after release. After criticism, it moved the embargo to the moment of launch. Axios quoted a public-relations representative explaining: “We originally set our review embargo date to minimize the chance of spoilers for fans, as they have been waiting for quite a while for the third installment,” followed by: “But in light of fan demand expressed today online, we are re-adjusting the date.” The change demonstrates that an embargo can be a policy choice that shifts in response to audience concerns; it does not establish the game’s quality.

An early date is not a guarantee either

An unusually early embargo can give critics more time, but it does not guarantee that they played every mode or reached the endgame. Check the article’s scope rather than inferring confidence from the publication hour.

How much time did the reviewer really have?

Access lead time is one of the most useful pieces of context a buyer can find. Look for an explicit statement about when the code arrived, or for wording such as “we received the review build three weeks before launch.” If the outlet does not disclose the interval, do not assume it.

Big Games Machine’s 2024 survey found that 67% of respondents wanted review copies at least three weeks before release. Within that group, 25% preferred four weeks as a minimum and 10% preferred more than four weeks. These figures describe the preferences of survey respondents, not every reviewer or a census of games journalism.

Survey response Share of Big Games Machine respondents
Wanted at least three weeks before release 67%
Preferred four weeks as a minimum 25%
Preferred more than four weeks 10%

The same report uses games taking more than 50 hours to complete as an example of why a short window is difficult. One anonymous respondent wrote: “It’s really awful when you get a key for a lengthy game such as a JRPG that’s 50+ hours long and have three days to play and finish a review before the embargo is up.” That is a survey comment, not a measurement of every review schedule, but it illustrates the trade-off a buyer should consider.

Read the review’s scope, not only its headline

Before relying on a score, establish what the critic could actually test. A thorough review normally tells you enough to answer these questions:

  • How long was the game played? Hours played help you distinguish a completed campaign from first impressions.
  • Which build was tested? A pre-release build may differ from the public version after a day-one patch.
  • Which modes were available? Campaign, co-op, competitive multiplayer, side activities and endgame systems can have separate performance and balance.
  • Were live servers open? A critic cannot meaningfully assess matchmaking, population, latency or seasonal systems while servers are offline.
  • What remains unknown? Look for explicit caveats about inaccessible missions, unfinished online testing, missing updates or content that unlocks after launch.
  • Is the piece final or provisional? “In progress,” “early impressions” and similar labels mean the assessment can change.

A review that clearly lists these boundaries is more useful than a confident number with no testing details.

Why “review in progress” can be the honest choice

Some outlets publish a partial assessment when the embargo arrives but label it as unfinished. GameSpot describes this format as a way to report early impressions while stating what still needs to be played; the details and score can change before finalization. Such an article can answer questions about the opening hours, controls or technical performance without pretending to cover content the critic has not reached.

IGN has similarly said that it may withhold a final score or an opinion about online components until live testing is possible. An unscored or provisional article is therefore not automatically evasive. It may be the outlet’s way of separating observed facts from conclusions that require more time.

When reading one, distinguish three layers: what the critic has directly experienced, what they expect to verify, and what cannot yet be assessed. Treat the first layer as current evidence, not the final verdict.

Live services and multiplayer change the meaning of launch timing

Launch-day conditions can be materially different from review-week conditions. A multiplayer game may have nearly empty matchmaking during pre-release access, while a single-player title with always-online requirements may behave differently once thousands of players connect. Events, progression economies and post-launch content may not activate until release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IGN’s policy allows for testing live online elements after launch before deciding on a final score. Kotaku has described waiting for live servers and later content before reviewing Destiny, illustrating why a responsible review can appear after release even when critics had early access.

For an online-focused game, a launch-day score that incorporates live testing can be more informative than an earlier score based on an isolated pre-release environment. Conversely, if the review was written before servers opened, read its network and population comments as limited observations.

A practical method for comparing reviews

When two outlets disagree, compare their evidence before comparing their numbers. Use this sequence:

  1. Record the access lead time. Note when each outlet received its code and when the embargo lifted. A reviewer with three days and one with three weeks may be answering different questions.
  2. Check the build and patch state. Determine whether the review used a preview build, a release candidate or the public launch version, and whether a day-one update was included.
  3. Check server conditions. Identify whether online modes were live, how many players were available and whether the critic says further testing is planned.
  4. List the content reached. Compare campaign completion, side content, endgame, co-op and competitive modes rather than assuming one score covers all of them equally.
  5. Separate provisional from final judgments. An in-progress article should not be weighed as if it were a completed review.
  6. Read disclosed limitations. Future updates, inaccessible features and technical restrictions can explain a difference without either outlet being careless.
Comparison axis What to look for Why it matters
Access lead time Days or weeks between code delivery and publication Indicates how much time was available for completion and testing
Build and servers Pre-release or launch build; offline or live online services Shows whether observations match the conditions buyers encounter
Modes and endgame Campaign, side content, co-op, competitive play and post-story systems Reveals which parts of the product support the conclusion
Review status Final score or clearly labeled in-progress coverage Signals whether the assessment is complete or subject to change
Disclosed limits Unplayed content, pending patches or future online testing Prevents you from treating unknowns as negative or positive evidence

What different embargo patterns can and cannot tell you

Reviews appear before launch

This usually means at least some critics had enough access to publish before release. It does not prove every mode was tested or that the final build was identical to the review build. Look for the scope and patch notes inside each article.

Reviews appear at launch

A launch-time embargo can provide synchronized information without giving critics a large public lead. It may also allow live servers to open alongside reviews. The date alone is neutral; the disclosed testing conditions determine how useful the coverage is.

Reviews appear after launch

Post-launch publication may reflect late code delivery, a long game, a deliberate wait for online services or an outlet’s policy of finishing more content before scoring. It is a reason to inspect the explanation, not a reason to assume a bad game.

Only previews or impressions are available

Preview coverage can describe a limited session, but it is not a substitute for a review. Do not transfer a preview’s enthusiasm or criticism to systems the writer could not access.

Questions buyers should ask on release day

  • Does the review say how many hours were played?
  • Was the main story finished, and were meaningful side activities sampled?
  • Were the multiplayer servers live and populated?
  • Did the outlet test the version available to ordinary buyers?
  • Is the score final, or is the article explicitly in progress?
  • Which technical problems are reproducible, and which are described as awaiting a patch?
  • Does the critic identify content that remains untested?

If the answers are missing, reduce the weight you give that review rather than filling the gaps with assumptions. You can still use clearly observed comments about controls, writing, performance or the opening hours, but keep those observations within their stated scope.

Common mistakes when interpreting embargoes

“Late embargo means the publisher knows the game is bad”

That conclusion is unsupported. Spoiler management, release coordination and live-service testing can all produce a late date. Seek the outlet’s access and testing details.

“An early embargo means the game is safe to buy”

Early access gives reviewers more opportunity, not a guaranteed result. A critic may still lack the final patch, endgame or populated servers.

“One score represents every mode”

Campaign quality, competitive balance, co-op stability and endgame depth can diverge. Read which components the score actually covers.

“An in-progress article is a final review”

GameSpot and IGN’s stated practices show why this is risky: online testing and later details can change the final opinion or score. Treat provisional language as a boundary on the evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A calendar window equals playtime”

A reviewer can have weeks of nominal access but lose time to server outages, embargo restrictions, recording limits or the need to test multiple platforms. Conversely, a short window can still produce a useful focused assessment of a compact game. Judge what was actually tested.

How publishers’ access practices affect buyers

Advance review access can improve launch-day information when critics have enough time and a representative build. It can also compress coverage when codes arrive shortly before release, especially for games with long campaigns or many systems. Big Games Machine’s survey preference for at least three weeks reflects that practical concern, but it is not an industry requirement.

Restrictions on footage and spoilers can also shape what a review can show. A written article may discuss a feature while being unable to publish a video demonstration. That limitation affects presentation, not necessarily the critic’s ability to evaluate the feature. Read the prose and disclosure rather than judging coverage by the amount of footage online.

Bottom line for a game buyer

Use the embargo as a timestamp, not a verdict. The review period tells you how much opportunity a critic had; the article’s scope tells you what they actually learned. Give the most weight to coverage that discloses access lead time, build and patch status, server conditions, modes tested, hours played and any remaining unknowns. For long, online or regularly updated games, a later or provisional review can be more responsible than a rushed score at launch.
