What can core-level spectroscopy tell us about quantum materials? It provides element-specific evidence about local chemistry, bonding and structure, while spectral energies and line shapes can reveal electronic states and interactions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is especially useful for chemical states and surfaces or interfaces. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) probes empty states and local structure: its near-edge (XANES) and extended fine-structure (EXAFS) regions answer different questions.

These spectra are not self-interpreting labels. The measured signal also contains effects from the core hole, many-body interactions, sample depth, charging and measurement geometry. Reliable conclusions therefore connect a selected core level or absorption edge with calculations, calibration and complementary measurements rather than treating one peak or edge position as universal proof.

Why element specificity matters

A quantum material can contain several chemically and electronically distinct elements, sites or layers. A measurement that averages all of them may hide the change of interest. Core-level spectroscopy selects a particular atom through its core level or absorption edge, making local questions more tractable: Is a transition-metal site in a different chemical environment? Does an interface alter the valence or orbital character of one element? Are neighboring atoms arranged as expected?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

XAS is sensitive to the local environment around the absorbing element. Photoelectron methods add information about chemical, electronic and, with suitable extensions, magnetic properties. The useful unit of interpretation is therefore “this edge or core level in this material and geometry,” not a universal spectrum-to-property rule.

What is actually measured?

Photoemission: electrons from occupied states

In XPS, an X-ray photon ejects an electron. The analyzer measures the electron’s kinetic energy; after accounting for the photon energy and the spectrometer work function, researchers obtain a core-level binding energy. That energy and the line shape respond to the atom’s chemical and electronic surroundings. Peak areas can also be compared, with appropriate sensitivity factors and geometry, to estimate relative composition.

Photoemission starts with an occupied state and records an emitted electron. Conventional XPS is usually surface-sensitive because electrons lose energy as they travel through matter. The exact sampling depth depends on kinetic energy, material and emission angle, so “surface” does not mean one fixed number of nanometers for every experiment.

Absorption: transitions into unoccupied states

In XAS, incident photons promote a core electron into unoccupied states. Absorption edges are conventionally named K, L or M according to the initial core shell. The resulting energy-dependent absorption coefficient contains both electronic-transition information and the way the excited electron scatters from nearby atoms.

Because XAS does not require detecting an emitted electron, it can be applied in transmission, fluorescence or electron-yield geometries. Each geometry has its own depth and self-absorption considerations. The edge selected is set by the element and accessible photon energy, while the measurement mode is set by concentration, sample thickness and the question being asked.

What XPS can reveal about quantum materials

Chemical shifts, valence and orbital character

A change in core-level binding energy can indicate a changed chemical environment or valence, but it is not an oxidation-state scale that works unchanged across materials. Orbital identity, local electrostatic potential, screening and final-state effects all contribute. In strongly correlated compounds, multiplet splitting and other many-body structures can be as informative as the nominal peak position.

Assignments should be anchored to a calibrated energy reference and to a physically plausible set of components. A shift is evidence for a changed local potential or screening environment; calling it charge transfer or a specific oxidation state requires corroboration from other core levels, valence spectra, stoichiometry, calculations or an independent structural or magnetic probe.

Line shapes as interaction fingerprints

Asymmetric tails, satellites, multiplets and shoulders can encode screening channels, charge-transfer processes or correlated electronic behavior. They can also arise from overlapping chemical sites, defects or instrumental broadening. Fitting a line with several peaks is therefore a model choice, not a direct atom count. Researchers should state the background, line-shape functions, constraints and uncertainty, and test whether a simpler physical explanation fits the data.

Surface chemistry and interfaces

Surface sensitivity makes conventional XPS powerful for oxidation, adsorbates, reaction layers and termination chemistry. It is also a limitation when the property of interest is buried. Charging in insulating or poorly grounded samples can move or broaden peaks; reference procedures must be reported because an apparently small shift may be electrical rather than chemical. The reviewed literature establishes that calibration and interpretation are challenging, but no single calibration protocol is valid for every sample.

Hard-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) uses higher-energy photons to obtain more bulk-like information. Standing-wave photoemission can vary the depth at which a signal is enhanced, which is useful for layered films and buried interfaces. Resonant photoemission can emphasize selected electronic states. These approaches often require synchrotron radiation, specialized optics and carefully designed samples; they are not routine replacements for a benchtop XPS scan.

What XAS can reveal: XANES versus EXAFS

XANES: near-edge electronic and local-symmetry information

XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure) covers the near-edge region. One cited study describes it as extending roughly 50 eV above the edge; the boundary is a practical convention rather than a universal sharp cutoff. XANES features reflect allowed and weakly allowed electronic transitions, local scattering and symmetry. They may correlate with oxidation state, coordination number and local symmetry, but the correlation depends on the absorbing element and material family.

Pre-edge intensity, edge shape and post-edge resonances can distinguish sites or coordination environments when supported by reference compounds or calculations. An edge moving to higher energy may be consistent with higher oxidation, yet covalency, geometry and screening can produce similar changes. Treat the spectrum as a fingerprint interpreted within a system-specific model.

EXAFS: radial distributions around an absorber

EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) is the higher-energy oscillatory region. The oscillations arise from interference between the outgoing photoelectron wave and waves scattered by neighboring atoms. Analysis can yield approximate neighbor distances, coordination numbers and disorder parameters, often beginning with the first shell and extending farther when the energy range and signal quality permit.

EXAFS is more directly connected to radial distributions than XANES, but it still requires a structural model and treatment of phase shifts, multiple scattering, disorder and correlated parameters. A good fit is not unique proof of one structure; chemically distinct models can produce similar oscillations over a limited range.

Why the core hole changes the interpretation

Creating a core-level excitation leaves a positively charged core hole. The remaining electrons screen it, and the excited electron interacts with that disturbance. The measured final state can therefore differ substantially from a simple picture of an isolated atom or an unperturbed band.

The electron-core-hole interaction is critical for proper interpretation of core-level spectroscopies commonly used as structural tools in materials’ science.

This statement appears in the NIST publication record for a 2021 Physical Review B study by Eric L. Shirley, Joseph Woicik, Conan Weiland, James M. Ablett, Abdul K. Rumaiz, Michael T. Brumbach, Joshua J. Kas and John J. Rehr. Their calculations and measurements on SrTiO3 and MoS2 examine how resonant Auger spectroscopy can identify exciton, shake and charge-transfer processes associated with creating a core hole.

The practical consequence is that a peak may encode both the ground-state material and the spectroscopy-induced final state. Calculations that include the core-hole potential, together with reference spectra and complementary probes, can separate those contributions more reliably than an isolated empirical assignment.

Why spectrum-to-structure inference is an inverse problem

The forward problem is to calculate a spectrum from a proposed structure and electronic model. The experiment runs in the opposite direction: many structures and models can produce similar spectra. A 2023 Physical Review Materials study illustrates this challenge with a simulated transition-metal K-edge XANES dataset containing more than 50,000 individual cation spectra across eight 3d transition-metal oxide families, from Ti through Cu. That number describes simulated spectra in the demonstration, not measurements across all quantum materials.

Descriptor-feature relationships that work for one transition-metal family may fail in another. Robust interpretation should therefore report what is directly measured, what is calculated and what is inferred. If two structural models remain plausible, the honest result is a constrained set of possibilities, followed by a measurement that discriminates between them.

A practical workflow for a defensible study

  1. Define the local question. Specify the element, layer or site and whether the target is chemical state, occupied electronic structure, unoccupied states, local coordination or neighbor distances.
  2. Select the core level or edge. Choose an XPS core level for occupied-state and chemical-environment information, or an XAS edge for unoccupied-state and local-structure information. Check photon-energy access, elemental concentration and possible overlaps.
  3. Design the sampling depth. For XPS, decide whether surface sensitivity is desired. For buried interfaces, evaluate HAXPES, angle variation or standing-wave excitation. For XAS, choose transmission, fluorescence or electron yield and account for self-absorption and depth.
  4. Prepare references and controls. Include chemically meaningful reference compounds, a clean or untreated surface where relevant, and measurements that reveal charging or beam-induced changes. Record geometry, atmosphere, temperature and dose.
  5. Acquire complementary signals. Measure additional core levels or edges, survey spectra, valence spectra or structural probes when a single feature cannot distinguish competing explanations.
  6. Model the spectrum explicitly. State energy calibration, background, resolution, fitting constraints and uncertainty. For XAS, document normalization, background subtraction, fitting range and structural parameters. Use calculations when core-hole, multiplet or multiple-scattering effects are important.
  7. Separate result from inference. Label each conclusion as measured, calculated or model-inferred, and list alternatives that the data do not exclude.

Examples of questions each method can answer

Is an interface chemically reconstructed?

Surface-sensitive XPS can compare core-level components from a film and its exposed surface. If the interface is buried, HAXPES or a standing-wave measurement can vary depth sensitivity. A changed binding energy alone does not prove interfacial charge transfer; depth dependence, multiple elements and an electrostatic model are needed.

Did local coordination change without a large valence shift?

XANES can detect changes in pre-edge intensity or near-edge shape associated with symmetry and orbital mixing even when an oxidation-state assignment is unchanged. EXAFS can test whether neighbor distances or coordination numbers changed. Calculated spectra and reference compounds help distinguish geometry from covalency effects.

Are satellites caused by charge transfer or another final-state process?

Core-level line shapes, resonant Auger channels and theory can test whether satellites arise from excitons, shake processes, charge transfer or multiplet structure. The SrTiO3 and MoS2 study demonstrates this combined approach for specific materials; its signatures should not be generalized to every quantum material.

Common failure modes and fixes

  • Universal oxidation-state claims: Replace “the edge proves oxidation state” with a system-specific comparison to standards, calculations and other edges.
  • Ignoring charging: Check electrical grounding, monitor peak stability and report the reference used before interpreting small shifts.
  • Calling a surface result bulk behavior: State the detection geometry and sampling depth; use HAXPES, standing waves or an appropriate XAS geometry for buried regions.
  • Overfitting peaks: Tie each component to a chemical or physical hypothesis, constrain parameters transparently and test whether alternatives fit.
  • Confusing XANES and EXAFS: Use near-edge features for electronic and local-symmetry questions, and the extended oscillations for radial-neighbor analysis.
  • Reporting only a fitted structure: Include uncertainty and non-unique solutions when more than one model matches the data.
  • Neglecting beam damage: Compare spectra as a function of dose, position or time, especially for thin films, molecular layers and metastable phases.

What to report so others can evaluate the result

  • Element, core level or absorption edge, photon-energy range and energy resolution.
  • Sample composition, thickness, crystallographic orientation, treatment history and environment.
  • Detection geometry, incidence and emission angles, polarization and estimated probing depth.
  • For XPS: charge compensation, energy reference, background, line shapes, constraints and sensitivity factors.
  • For XAS: transmission or fluorescence arrangement, normalization, self-absorption treatment and XANES/EXAFS fitting ranges.
  • Whether each spectrum is measured, simulated or calculated, including the treatment of the core hole.
  • Alternative assignments and the complementary evidence used to rule them in or out.

Conclusion

Core-level spectroscopy is most powerful when treated as an element-selective, model-tested measurement. XPS links occupied-state and chemical-environment information to a chosen depth, while XANES and EXAFS separate near-edge electronic/local-symmetry clues from extended-range neighbor information. Core-hole physics, charging, geometry and non-unique inverse solutions set the boundaries of what any one spectrum can establish. Combining the right edge or core level with references, calculations and complementary probes turns those spectra into defensible evidence about quantum materials.
