Yes—environmental conditions can shape young people’s mental health and well-being, but there is no single “environment effect.” Climate hazards, air pollution, noise, housing conditions, and access to green or blue space involve different exposures, pathways, age groups and outcomes. Reviews find associations with symptoms, sleep, emotional well-being, learning and development; they do not show that any one exposure inevitably causes a mental-health diagnosis in an individual child or teenager.
What “the environment” means in this evidence
Environmental conditions are often discussed as though they were one risk factor. They are not. A child may experience several at once: extreme heat during a smoky wildfire season, traffic noise beside an overcrowded home, or displacement after flooding followed by interruption of school and health services. Each exposure has a different intensity, timing, duration and mechanism.
Studies also measure different outcomes. Some assess short-term distress, anxiety or post-traumatic stress symptoms; others measure depression symptoms, sleep, emotional well-being, learning, cognitive performance or a diagnosed disorder. A result for learning or respiratory health cannot automatically be presented as proof of a mental-health diagnosis. Age, developmental stage, geography, household income and access to services also change the likely impact.

How environmental conditions can affect mental health
Direct physical stress
Heat, smoke, polluted air, noise and poor indoor conditions can disturb sleep, concentration and the body’s stress systems. Those effects may make it harder to regulate emotions or function at school. A pathway is not the same as proof that an exposure caused a clinical disorder, but it explains why environmental health and mental health are connected.
Trauma, loss and displacement
Floods, storms, wildfires and other climate events can involve injury, evacuation, destruction of homes, loss of possessions and separation from familiar places. The UNICEF and Karolinska Institutet report A threat to progress (July 2024) describes children as especially vulnerable because their bodies and development are still changing. It identifies trauma, loss of safety and displacement as routes to mental-health challenges.
Interrupted routines and services
A disaster can close schools, disrupt friendships, delay medical care and remove access to counselling or other social services. These indirect effects can persist after the immediate danger has passed. Climate-related disruption can therefore affect mental health through a household or community, even when a young person was not physically injured.
Future-oriented worry
Concern about climate change is different from experiencing a flood, fire or heatwave. A young person may worry about future risks without having lived through a disaster; another may have both climate-related worry and direct event trauma. Studies should keep those experiences separate because they involve different exposures and may require different support.

What climate-event studies find
A 2023 umbrella review of meta-analyses reported reasonable evidence associating climate events with mental-health outcomes. Its included meta-analyses suggested increases in post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety symptoms after different types of events. Effect sizes varied, and some results were not statistically significant. That pattern supports a real concern without supplying a universal risk percentage for every child.
The review’s breadth is also a limitation: not every finding was youth-specific, and studies differed in event type, follow-up period, population and outcome definition. A result combining adults and children cannot be treated as a precise estimate for teenagers.
The 2024 narrative review from the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) similarly describes climate change as affecting child and adolescent health through direct hazards and disruption of families, communities and services. These reviews establish plausible and repeatedly observed associations, not proof that a particular event will produce a diagnosis.
Climate hazards identified in child-health guidance
The UNICEF–Karolinska report covers extreme heat, drought, wildfires, floods, storms, air pollution and ecosystem changes. It notes that children can face overlapping hazards. Extreme heat may reduce sleep quality, which matters for development and emotional health. Floods and storms can be traumatic, displace families, remove a safe environment and interrupt health and social services.

These are report-level pathways rather than a single measured causal effect. The practical implication is to reduce exposure, maintain continuity of care and watch for persistent symptoms after an event.
Air pollution: strong child-health evidence, more limited mental-health conclusions
A 2024 scoping review of systematic reviews focused on school-age children and adolescents found consistent evidence linking air pollution with adverse cognitive and respiratory outcomes and poorer learning performance. It called for more research on mechanisms and on combined heat and noise exposure.
Those findings matter for mental well-being because breathing problems, impaired concentration and disrupted school performance can increase stress and reduce daily functioning. However, the review does not establish that air pollution directly causes a youth mental-health diagnosis. Do not convert its cognitive or respiratory results into a proven effect on depression, anxiety or another disorder.

Questions to ask when reading an air-pollution study
- Was exposure measured near a school, at home, through personal monitoring or by a regional average?
- Which pollutants were included, and at what concentration and duration?
- Was the outcome a symptom scale, school performance, well-being measure or diagnosed disorder?
- Did the study isolate pollution from heat, noise, socioeconomic disadvantage and existing health conditions?
- Was the sample limited to young people, or were adult results combined with youth data?
Noise, sleep and emotional well-being
UNICEF’s Noise and Children’s Health report (March 2026) defines noise as unwanted and/or harmful sound and calls it a preventable environmental health hazard. It states that noise can undermine children’s sleep, learning and emotional well-being. Traffic, aircraft, construction and other recurring sources can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep, while classroom noise can interfere with attention.
Sleep disruption is an important pathway, not proof that noise alone causes a mental illness. The same report notes that reducing traffic near schools or changing flight paths could also reduce air and light pollution, illustrating how one planning decision can affect several exposures at once. The source supports prevention and environmental management; it does not report a clinical trial showing that a particular noise intervention treats a disorder.
Useful questions for families and schools
- Is the sound occasional or present most nights?
- Does it wake the child, delay sleep or cause daytime fatigue?
- Can quiet study and recovery spaces be created at home or school?
- Can building, traffic or flight authorities address the source rather than relying only on ear protection?
Housing conditions and indoor exposures
A 2025 systematic review of adverse housing conditions reported that overcrowding, poor physical housing conditions and indoor exposures—including mould or damp, indoor air pollution and noise—were associated with greater mental-health difficulties or reduced mental-health competence among children and young people.

The abstract does not provide one pooled effect estimate suitable for every household, and it does not establish causation. Housing problems often cluster with financial strain, insecurity, discrimination and limited access to care, which can influence mental health independently or interact with the physical environment.

What this means in practice
Addressing mould, damp, unsafe temperatures, crowding and persistent indoor pollution is a legitimate child-health priority. It should be combined with support for housing stability and mental-health care when symptoms persist. A cleaner or quieter room may remove a stressor, but it should not be described as a substitute for assessment or treatment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Green and blue spaces: potential protective factors
The World Health Organization describes green and blue spaces as parks, sports fields, woods, wetlands, riversides and other natural areas. They can provide opportunities for physical activity, relaxation and refuge from urban noise. WHO states that access can improve well-being and support mental-illness treatment, while some analyses suggest that nature-based activity may help indicators of mild depression and stress.
This is general urban-health guidance, not youth-specific proof that visiting a park prevents a disorder. Access also depends on safety, disability access, transport, maintenance, cost and whether a young person feels welcome there. A nearby space that is unsafe or inaccessible is not equivalent to meaningful access.
How to interpret a claimed benefit
- Look for the actual outcome: momentary stress, self-reported well-being, symptoms or clinical recovery.
- Check whether participants were children, adolescents, adults or a mixed sample.
- Distinguish association from an experiment or a controlled intervention.
- Ask whether physical activity, social contact, lower noise or sunlight could explain part of the result.
Comparing the evidence across exposures
| Exposure | Outcomes reported in the cited evidence | Population limits | What can responsibly be concluded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Climate events | PTSD, depression and anxiety symptoms in umbrella-review meta-analyses; trauma, sleep disruption, displacement and service interruption in child-health reports | Meta-analyses vary and are not uniformly youth-specific | Climate events are associated with mental-health symptoms in some studies; effects vary and are not a diagnosis forecast for every child |
| Air pollution | Cognitive, respiratory and learning effects in child-focused reviews; mental-health outcomes in a broader global review | Direct youth mental-health evidence is less established than physical and cognitive evidence | Pollution can harm child health and may contribute to mental-health risk, but a direct causal effect on youth diagnoses is not proven by these reviews |
| Noise | Sleep, learning and emotional well-being | UNICEF guidance describes pathways rather than a treatment trial | Noise reduction is a sensible preventive public-health measure |
| Housing | Mental-health difficulties or reduced competence associated with crowding, poor conditions, mould, damp, indoor pollution and noise | 2025 review abstract does not establish causality or one universal effect size | Improving housing and stability may remove important stressors; persistent symptoms still require care |
| Green and blue space | Well-being, relaxation, activity and some mild-depression or stress indicators | WHO evidence is general urban-health guidance, not youth-specific prevention proof | Accessible natural space may support well-being and complement, but not replace, treatment |
How to judge a headline or study
- Identify the exposure precisely. “Climate change” could mean heat, wildfire smoke, flooding, drought, ecosystem change or worry about future risks.
- Check the participants. Note age, developmental stage, country and socioeconomic context. Mixed-age evidence cannot be silently relabelled as adolescent evidence.
- Check the outcome. Symptoms, sleep, learning, well-being and a diagnosed disorder are different endpoints.
- Check timing and dose. A single disaster, repeated seasonal exposure and chronic housing conditions are not interchangeable.
- Look for study design. An association, a longitudinal study, a natural experiment and a randomized intervention support different strengths of inference.
- Consider competing explanations. Poverty, displacement, prior mental-health history, family stress, healthcare access and social support may affect both exposure and outcome.
- Read the uncertainty. Varying effect sizes, confidence intervals and non-significant results are part of the finding, not details to omit.
What families, schools and communities can do
Reduce environmental stressors
- Use heat-safety plans, clean-air procedures and reliable shelter during climate hazards.
- Address mould, damp, unsafe temperatures, indoor smoke and overcrowding through housing and public-health services.
- Work with schools and transport authorities on traffic, construction and other recurring noise.
- Protect and maintain accessible green and blue spaces near homes and schools.
Protect routines and connection
After a disaster or displacement, restoring sleep, school, trusted adults, peer contact and healthcare access can reduce secondary stress. Young people should receive clear, age-appropriate information without being made responsible for solving a crisis they did not create.
Know when to seek help
Environmental exposure does not diagnose a condition. Seek professional advice when anxiety, low mood, nightmares, irritability, withdrawal, concentration problems, sleep disturbance or physical stress symptoms persist, worsen or interfere with school, relationships or safety. Immediate danger, self-harm thoughts or inability to stay safe require urgent local emergency or crisis support.
What the evidence does not yet answer
The reviewed sources do not provide one youth-specific pooled statistic for “the environment” as a whole. They also do not show that a consumer device, app or household product prevents or treats an environmental mental-health effect. Future studies need clearer exposure measurement, youth-specific samples, longer follow-up, consistent mental-health outcomes and better separation of direct exposure from household, community and service disruption.
The strongest current case is for combining environmental prevention with ordinary mental-health support: reduce hazards, preserve safe routines and natural spaces, maintain services, and assess each young person’s symptoms and circumstances rather than assuming an identical response.
