No three distributions officially replaced CentOS. CentOS Linux 7 reached end of life on June 30, 2024, and CentOS Linux 8 ended on December 31, 2021. Red Hat lists Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Ubuntu, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux and CloudLinux as available alternatives. For organizations seeking a familiar RHEL-family operating system, Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux and Oracle Linux are the three most visible options—but they are alternatives, not successors appointed by the CentOS Project.
What happened to CentOS Linux?
CentOS Linux was a rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The CentOS Project shifted its future focus to CentOS Stream, the public development branch that tracks ahead of a current RHEL release. That change did not create an officially designated replacement for CentOS Linux.
- CentOS Linux 8: updates ended December 31, 2021.
- CentOS Linux 7: updates and releases ended June 30, 2024.
- CentOS Stream: upstream of RHEL, not the downstream rebuild that CentOS Linux users operated.
Red Hat’s migration guidance says CentOS Linux 7 is not being replaced; organizations must move to another supported operating system to continue receiving updates, patches and new features.

| Distribution | Positioning | Support and migration evidence | Key decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rocky Linux | Community RHEL-family alternative named by Red Hat | Red Hat identifies it as an alternative; no project-specific conversion procedure is established here. Verify current community and commercial support terms. | Is a community-supported RHEL-family base sufficient for your workloads? |
| AlmaLinux | Community RHEL-family alternative named by Red Hat | Red Hat identifies it as an alternative; verify current project and commercial support terms before migrating. | Do you need RHEL-style compatibility without a vendor subscription? |
| Oracle Linux | Vendor-backed RHEL-compatible alternative | Oracle documents an in-place conversion script for CentOS Linux 6, 7 and 8, with remediation caveats. | Are Oracle support services, tooling or kernel choices valuable to your organization? |
| Red Hat Enterprise Linux | Commercial enterprise platform and Red Hat’s migration target | Red Hat documents Lightspeed, a Third Party Linux Migration subscription and developer access options. | Are certification, compliance, support and predictable lifecycle management worth subscription cost? |
Rocky Linux
Rocky Linux is a community RHEL-family choice for teams that want a familiar package ecosystem and administration model without making a commercial subscription their default. Its inclusion in Red Hat’s alternatives list does not make it an official CentOS successor. Confirm the project’s current release policy, security response process and any commercial support contract before standardizing production systems.
#1 Best Overall
AlmaLinux
AlmaLinux occupies a similar position: a community RHEL-family alternative rather than a distribution appointed by the CentOS Project. Evaluate its current compatibility expectations, governance, update cadence and support options against your operational requirements instead of assuming that every CentOS workload will migrate unchanged.
Oracle Linux
Oracle documents a direct conversion path that supports CentOS Linux 6, 7 and 8. Its migration script is not for CentOS Stream. Oracle warns that packages from third-party repositories, third-party management tools and closed-source kernel modules may require remediation. Those dependencies should be inventoried before attempting an in-place conversion.
What about Red Hat Enterprise Linux?
RHEL is the vendor-backed route for organizations that prioritize certified hardware and software combinations, formal support, compliance requirements and a managed lifecycle. Red Hat offers a Third Party Linux Migration subscription that provides up to four additional years of updates after the June 30, 2024 CentOS Linux 7 end-of-life date. Red Hat also documents conversion tooling, Lightspeed migration assistance and developer subscription access; eligibility and terms depend on the organization and use case.

RHEL is therefore a migration target, not a free replacement promise. Include subscription cost, support coverage, certification needs and the value of vendor escalation in the total-cost decision.
Is CentOS Stream suitable for production?
CentOS Stream is continuously delivered between Fedora and RHEL. Content is released as it is ready and is intended for future RHEL minor releases, rather than being held for the downstream, point-release model used by CentOS Linux. Red Hat explicitly says CentOS Stream is not a replacement for CentOS Linux.
The CentOS Project lists CentOS Stream 9 end of life as May 31, 2027, and CentOS Stream 10 end of life as May 31, 2030. Those dates correspond to the relevant RHEL full-support phases. Stream can suit development, testing and teams comfortable consuming content ahead of a RHEL minor release; it should not be selected merely because its name contains “CentOS.” Validate application and vendor support policies before using it for production.

How to choose a migration path
- Inventory the current estate. Record CentOS version, enabled repositories, kernel modules, third-party agents, management tools, hardware dependencies and applications with operating-system certification requirements.
- Decide whether in-place conversion is acceptable. Oracle’s documented script covers CentOS Linux 6, 7 and 8, but third-party packages and modules may need removal or replacement. A clean rebuild is often easier to audit when dependencies are complex.
- Set the support requirement. Choose a community model only if your team can own troubleshooting and lifecycle work. Choose a vendor subscription when contractual support, certification or compliance evidence is required.
- Check lifecycle and cloud availability. Confirm the target release’s maintenance dates, image availability and support in each environment. Red Hat identifies AWS, Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud as environments organizations may standardize across.
- Test before changing production. Recreate representative services, validate package and kernel behavior, exercise backups and rollback, and obtain application-owner sign-off.
- Plan the cutover and retirement. Freeze repository changes, document the rollback point, migrate in batches and remove end-of-life CentOS hosts from monitoring and patch-management systems only after verification.
Answers to common CentOS replacement questions
What replaced CentOS 7?
Nothing officially replaced it. CentOS Linux 7 ended on June 30, 2024; Rocky Linux, AlmaLinux, Oracle Linux, RHEL, Ubuntu and CloudLinux are alternatives with different support and lifecycle models.
Is Rocky Linux the official CentOS replacement?
No. It is a community RHEL-family alternative named by Red Hat, not an official successor designated by the CentOS Project.
Best Value
Is AlmaLinux closer to CentOS than Rocky Linux?
Both are community RHEL-family alternatives. The evidence here does not establish that one is universally closer; compare current compatibility, governance, support and migration requirements for your workloads.
Can I migrate CentOS 7 directly to Oracle Linux?
Oracle documents an in-place conversion script for CentOS Linux 7, as well as versions 6 and 8. It does not support CentOS Stream, and third-party repositories, management tools and closed-source kernel modules may require remediation.
