REI’s general return policy depends first on membership, product type and time since purchase—not simply on whether an item was discounted. REI says members may return most items within one year of purchase, while nonmembers generally have 90 days. Outdoor electronics have a 90-day limit for everyone. Those are the verified baseline rules.
The dedicated Returns & Exchanges FAQ specifically asks about sale items, coupon purchases and REI Outlet merchandise, but the answer to that question is not exposed in the available page material. Do not assume a sale item is automatically final sale, or that a discount changes the refund, until you check the live FAQ and any exclusion attached to the product.
What REI’s policy clearly establishes
For an ordinary REI purchase, the most important eligibility test is the applicable return window. The current general guidance says:

These are REI policy periods, not statutory consumer-rights deadlines. They can change, and a product-specific exclusion can take precedence. Keep the receipt, order record or other purchase information so REI can identify the transaction and determine which rule applies.

Does a sale price make an item final sale?
Not on the evidence available here. REI maintains a dedicated FAQ entry for the question “Can I return an item I bought on sale, with a coupon, or from REI Outlet?”, but the substantive answer is not visible in the indexed result. That means a categorical statement such as “all sale items can be returned” or “all sale items are final sale” would be unreliable.
Before sending the item back, open the live Returns & Exchanges FAQ and check the item’s own listing, receipt and order details for an exclusion. Confirm three separate points:
- Whether the exact item category is covered by the normal policy.
- Whether a sale, coupon or closeout designation adds a special restriction.
- How REI calculates the refund when a promotion, coupon or other discount was used.
Until the live answer confirms those points, treat the discount as a pricing detail rather than proof of eligibility or ineligibility. The general windows above remain useful context, but they do not answer the sale-specific exception by themselves.

Sale, coupon and Outlet purchases are different cases
“Sale item,” “coupon purchase,” “REI Outlet item” and “used gear” are often mixed together in online discussions. REI’s help material separates them, and the distinction affects which rule you need to verify.

The table’s final row is not an Outlet rule. Outlet is new merchandise; Re/Supply is used merchandise. Use the correct product label and purchase channel when you ask REI for a determination.
REI Outlet is not the same as Re/Supply
What Outlet means
REI describes Outlet products as brand-new closeouts and previous-year models. A lower price or an older model does not, by itself, prove that the product is used. If your order says Outlet, consult the sale/Outlet question in the current FAQ rather than applying the used-gear rules.

Re/Supply consists of used items. The available used-gear guidance states that purchases made in a store are final sale, while used gear bought online may be returned within 30 days. Those categories are narrower than the general member and nonmember windows and should not be substituted for them when evaluating a new item.

For used gear, REI also says the item should be cleaned before it is returned. Its wording is direct: “Dirty or unwashed gear may be declined and sent back to you.” That cleanliness condition applies to used gear; it should not be generalized into a requirement that every discounted new item be washed before return.
Condition, wear and damage rules for used gear
Even when an online Re/Supply return is within its 30-day period, condition matters. Clean the item, remove mud and residue, and pack it so it will not be damaged in transit. REI’s used-gear guidance says ordinary wear and tear, misuse and accidental damage fall outside its Satisfaction Guarantee. A return request based on a normal fit or purchase decision is therefore different from a claim about damage caused after use.
- Clean before shipping: Dirty or unwashed used gear may be declined and returned to you.
- Describe the condition accurately: Explain existing wear rather than presenting misuse or an accident as a manufacturing issue.
- Separate used from new: Do not apply these used-item conditions to an unused Outlet closeout without first confirming that REI classifies the product as used.

How to check a sale or coupon purchase before returning it
- Identify the product type. Record whether it is an ordinary sale item, a coupon purchase, an Outlet closeout, or Re/Supply used gear. Check the order description rather than relying on the price alone.
- Record the purchase date and channel. Note the date, order number or receipt, and whether the item was bought online or in a store. Channel matters especially for Re/Supply.
- Check membership status for the transaction. For most items, members and nonmembers have different general windows. Do not use the member period unless the purchase is associated with the membership record REI recognizes.
- Check for an electronics exception. If the product is outdoor electronics, use the 90-day limit even when the buyer is a member.
- Read the live sale/coupon/Outlet FAQ. The dedicated page is the authoritative place to verify the unresolved sale-specific rule: Returns & Exchanges FAQ.
- Review the listing and receipt. Look for “final sale,” category exclusions, or promotion language printed at checkout. Save a screenshot or copy of the terms that applied to the purchase.
- Choose a return method. A store return avoids the standard return-shipping deduction; a mailed return normally has a fee, described below.
- Ask REI before shipping if anything conflicts. Give the representative the exact item, order number, purchase date, channel and promotion used. Ask for the eligibility decision and expected refund treatment, not just whether the product is “on sale.”
Returning the item in a store versus by mail
In-store return
REI says in-store returns avoid return-shipping charges. Bring the item and the purchase information to an REI location and ask staff to verify the transaction against the current policy. This route can be useful when the sale or coupon terms are unclear because the store can inspect the item and clarify the applicable category before you incur mailing costs.

Standard mail-in return
For most items returned by standard mail, REI deducts a $7.99 return-shipping charge from the refund. The charge is a deduction from the refund, not a separate payment you should assume will be reimbursed. REI’s instructions also refer to an oversize fee; the amount depends on the shipment and is not stated in the available policy material.

A member bought a jacket during a regular sale
Start with the one-year general member window for most items, then verify the live sale-item answer and the jacket’s listing for an exclusion. The sale price alone does not establish either approval or denial.

Use the 90-day general nonmember window as the timing reference. Then confirm how the coupon affects the transaction’s eligibility and refund amount in the current FAQ or with REI, because the available material does not state that calculation.

An Outlet purchase is a new previous-year model
Classify it as new Outlet merchandise, not used Re/Supply gear. Check the Outlet-specific terms for that item; do not use the 30-day online used-gear rule unless REI identifies the purchase as Re/Supply.
An online Re/Supply item is dirty after use
Although online used gear has a 30-day return period, clean it first. REI warns that dirty or unwashed gear may be declined and sent back. Ordinary wear, misuse and accidental damage are outside the Satisfaction Guarantee.
An outdoor electronic device was discounted
Apply the 90-day electronics limit regardless of membership, then verify whether the sale or coupon adds another condition. The electronics deadline is not extended by member status.

Ask which specific rule caused the decision: elapsed time, product category, purchase channel, condition, promotion terms or another exclusion. Request that the representative identify the policy page or order term used. If the issue is a dirty used item, clean it and ask whether a new inspection is permitted; if it is an Outlet or coupon question, provide the exact order details rather than arguing from the word “sale.”
Keep records of the original receipt, order confirmation, promotion code, screenshots of the listing, tracking information and any messages from REI. Those records help distinguish a deadline problem from a classification problem and prevent you from paying another shipping charge without knowing whether the item qualifies.
Policy details can change
Return windows, exclusions and shipping deductions are retailer policy terms, not permanent guarantees. Check the linked REI pages immediately before submitting a return, especially when the purchase involves a coupon, Outlet designation, electronics or used gear. The safest answer to “Can I return this sale item?” is therefore item-specific: establish the purchase category, membership and deadline, then confirm the current sale/coupon/Outlet rule before choosing a return method.
