Short answer: A quantum computer cannot steal ETH from Ethereum wallets today. In a sufficiently advanced future machine, however, an externally owned account (EOA) that has revealed its public key could be attacked because Ethereum authorizes its transactions with ECDSA on the secp256k1 elliptic curve. Ethereum is planning a gradual, scheme-agile migration, but users do not have a quantum-specific emergency action to take now.

Can a quantum computer steal your ETH today?

No. Ethereum.org states plainly that “No quantum computer can break Ethereum’s cryptography today.” The machines, error correction and scale required for the relevant attack do not currently exist. The same guidance says ordinary Ethereum users have nothing they need to do at present.

That statement describes current capability, not a permanent guarantee. Ethereum’s security planning treats quantum computing as a long-term cryptographic transition. The important distinction is between an account’s signing algorithm, which could eventually be attacked, and the many other systems that protect balances, data availability and consensus.

What an Ethereum wallet is actually protecting

EOAs use ECDSA over secp256k1

Most personal Ethereum wallets control an externally owned account. The account signs each transaction with ECDSA using the secp256k1 elliptic curve. The private key creates the signature; the corresponding public key lets the network verify it. Anyone who obtains the private key can authorize transactions that spend the account’s funds.

A sufficiently capable quantum computer could run an algorithm that solves the elliptic-curve problem far faster than classical computers. If the account’s public key is available onchain, the attacker could theoretically derive the private key and produce valid signatures. This is a cryptographic attack on authorization, not a process in which quantum hardware directly reads a wallet file or seed phrase.

Why sending a transaction changes exposure

When an EOA sends a transaction, its signature reveals information from which the public key can be recovered. An address that has only received ETH normally exposes an address hash rather than the full public key. That gives the receive-only account additional protection against this particular public-key-recovery attack until it signs a transaction.

Receive-only status is not quantum proof. It does not protect against stolen seed phrases, malware, phishing, exchange compromise, smart-contract errors or other attack classes. It only describes whether the public key has been exposed through a transaction signature.

Account state Public-key visibility Meaning for a future quantum attack
Address has never sent an EOA transaction Usually only the address hash is visible More protection against an attack that requires the public key; not a general safety guarantee
Address has sent at least one EOA transaction Public key can be recovered from the onchain signature Could be targeted directly if a cryptographically relevant quantum computer exists
Funds held by a contract Depends on the contract’s authorization logic and any controlling EOAs Must be assessed by the contract design and the keys that can change its state

The exposure distinction and the account-level threat are described in Ethereum’s post-quantum cryptography roadmap.

How a future EOA attack would work

  1. Public-key exposure: The account signs an outgoing transaction, making the public key recoverable from transaction data.
  2. Quantum computation: An attacker runs a fault-tolerant quantum algorithm against the secp256k1 public key. This requires a machine with enough logical qubits, low error rates and sustained operation.
  3. Private-key recovery: The attack derives the private key corresponding to the exposed public key.
  4. Forged authorization: The attacker signs a transaction that transfers ETH or changes a contract position, and broadcasts it before the legitimate owner can react.

This scenario is conditional on hardware and operational assumptions that do not hold today. It also explains why the relevant question is not simply whether someone owns a hardware wallet: a device can protect the same ECDSA key very well against theft while leaving the underlying signature scheme unchanged.

What quantum computing would not automatically break

It would not make every ETH balance immediately vulnerable

A quantum threat to ECDSA does not mean every address, contract or wallet is equally exposed at the same moment. Exposure depends on the authorization mechanism, whether a public key has been revealed, and whether Ethereum has completed a migration before a capable attacker appears.

It would not defeat ordinary wallet custody controls by itself

Hardware wallets, encrypted backups and seed-storage practices remain useful against phishing, malware, accidental loss and unauthorized device access. They do not replace ECDSA with a post-quantum signature. A seed backup preserves the existing recovery material; it does not make that material quantum-resistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It would not automatically break all hashing

Ethereum uses hash functions in addresses, commitments and other structures. Quantum algorithms can change the security margin of some hash-based tasks, but the EOA threat described here is specifically the ability to recover an elliptic-curve private key from an exposed public key. It is inaccurate to describe the entire Ethereum cryptographic stack as one algorithm that either works or fails.

It would not be limited to personal wallets

Ethereum’s validators and data systems use different cryptographic assumptions. A quantum transition therefore has to cover more than the wallet signature displayed in a browser or mobile app.

Other Ethereum components that need post-quantum work

Layer or component Current quantum-sensitive element Why it matters Roadmap direction
Execution and user accounts ECDSA signatures on secp256k1 for EOAs An exposed public key could enable forged transactions Scheme agility, account abstraction and post-quantum verification support
Consensus validators BLS signatures Validator messages and attestations rely on a signature system with different quantum assumptions Hash-based signatures such as leanXMSS, with aggregation research using leanVM
Data availability KZG commitments Commitments help prove that data is available to the network A separate post-quantum data-layer workstream
Proof systems Pairing-based assumptions in some systems Proof verification may need alternatives if those assumptions become unsafe Research and migration work across the protocol stack

The Ethereum Foundation’s Post-Quantum Ethereum program treats these as separate engineering problems. A wallet user should not interpret a validator-signature or data-availability upgrade as proof that every EOA has already changed schemes.

How close is the threat?

Logical-qubit estimates are models, not current machines

Ethereum.org reports that a March 2026 Google Quantum AI paper estimated that breaking 256-bit elliptic-curve cryptography might require roughly 1,200 logical qubits, about 20 times fewer than earlier estimates. A logical qubit is an error-corrected unit; it is not the same as a noisy physical qubit on a laboratory chip. The estimate is therefore a resource model, not evidence that an attack machine exists.

A conditional nine-day scenario

In its 2026 paper, Google Quantum AI modeled a fast-clock, cryptographically relevant quantum computer that could crack the 1,000 highest-net-worth Ethereum accounts, holding approximately 20.5 million ETH at the paper’s time of writing, in less than nine days. That figure depends on the paper’s stated hardware, algorithmic and scheduling assumptions. It is not a present-day forecast, a claim that those accounts are currently compromised, or a countdown to an attack.

Other figures in Ethereum’s planning

Ethereum.org reports that the National Institute of Standards and Technology finalized three post-quantum cryptography standards in August 2024. It also reports that the Ethereum Foundation created a dedicated Post-Quantum Security team in January 2026 and is running weekly interoperability devnets with more than 10 client teams. Those are Foundation and Ethereum.org reports about development activity, not independent performance measurements.

One Ethereum.org roadmap passage presents an Ethereum Foundation estimate of approximately 0.1% quantum-vulnerable dormant fund exposure. The number is specifically about dormant funds; it is not a measure of all Ethereum exposure and does not show that active, previously used EOAs are immune.

Ethereum’s migration plan

Cryptographic agility instead of one sudden switch

The Foundation’s strategy is to let accounts and protocol components adopt new schemes without requiring a single disruptive, network-wide replacement event. For the execution layer, the post-quantum program describes opt-in transitions through account abstraction and support for post-quantum signature verification. This is a migration approach, not a statement that today’s mainnet EOAs already use post-quantum signatures.

Consensus and data-layer changes

For consensus, the program discusses replacing BLS with hash-based signatures such as leanXMSS. Hash-based signatures are generally larger than BLS signatures, so the roadmap also discusses aggregation through a minimal zero-knowledge virtual machine called leanVM. Data availability has its own post-quantum roadmap because KZG commitments cannot simply be changed by updating a wallet application.

The December 2029 target

In its September 7, 2026 priorities post, the Foundation says it is aiming for Ethereum L1 to be quantum-resistant across execution, consensus and data by December 2029. The same post calls the schedule aggressive, says ordering may change, and describes a minimum-viable post-quantum milestone as a temporary safeguard with reduced guarantees that researchers are still defining. December 2029 is therefore an engineering target, not a guaranteed activation date or a deadline by which individual users must move funds.

What EIP-8202 and EIP-7702 do—and do not—mean

EIP-8202 is a proposal for scheme-agile transactions

EIP-8202 explores transactions that can use alternate signing schemes. One design discussed in the proposal uses an ephemeral secp256k1 key exactly once and relies on Keccak-256 preimage resistance. It is an Ethereum Improvement Proposal, not a deployed feature that every wallet supports. Do not assume an account is protected merely because a wallet mentions scheme agility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

EIP-7702 is not a quantum-safe switch

The Foundation describes EIP-7702 as a step toward account abstraction and identifies native account abstraction as a route away from ECDSA-based authentication. EIP-7702 itself does not make an ordinary EOA quantum-safe. Its presence in a wallet interface is not proof that the account has migrated to a post-quantum key.

The Foundation’s earlier 2026 priorities update provides additional context on this account-abstraction direction: Protocol Priorities Update for 2026.

What Ethereum users should do now

  1. Do not panic-move funds solely because of quantum headlines. Ethereum’s official guidance says no current quantum computer can break its cryptography, and there is no required user action today.
  2. Know which addresses have sent transactions. A block explorer can show an address’s transaction history. A previously unused receiving address has not exposed its public key through an outgoing EOA signature, although that is not a universal security guarantee.
  3. Keep ordinary wallet hygiene. Protect seed phrases, verify transaction details on a trusted display, use strong device security and maintain recovery procedures. These controls address today’s practical threats even though they do not alter ECDSA.
  4. Follow official migration notices. When a post-quantum account format or wallet migration becomes deployable, verify that it is supported by the Ethereum protocol, the wallet software and any contracts or applications you use.
  5. Do not buy a product marketed as a quantum fix without checking the cryptography. A new device, metal backup or security key is not a post-quantum migration unless it changes the account’s authorization scheme and is accepted by Ethereum.

How to evaluate a future migration option

When a wallet or protocol announces quantum-related support, check these points before signing a migration transaction:

  • Account layer: Does it replace the EOA’s ECDSA authorization, or does it only improve key storage?
  • Deployment status: Is it live on Ethereum mainnet, an approved standard, an active proposal or a research prototype?
  • Key-use model: Is the scheme stateful or one-time-use, and what prevents accidental key reuse?
  • Signature overhead: What are the signature size, verification cost and transaction-fee implications? Hash-based signatures discussed in Ethereum’s roadmap are larger than BLS signatures, which is why aggregation matters.
  • Recovery and compatibility: Can existing contracts, bridges, exchanges and social-recovery arrangements recognize the new account?
  • Migration authority: Is the change opt-in for one account, or does it require a coordinated protocol upgrade?

These checks separate a genuine cryptographic migration from a wallet feature that merely stores an old key more securely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for wallet owners

Quantum computing is a credible future planning problem for Ethereum, not a present-day wallet-draining capability. The clearest account-level risk is an EOA that has exposed its secp256k1 public key by sending a transaction; a future attacker with a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could use that information to forge authorization. Validator BLS signatures, KZG commitments and pairing-based proofs create separate protocol obligations. Ethereum is building a gradual migration path and currently targets December 2029 for quantum resistance across all three layers, while explicitly warning that the schedule is aggressive and changeable.
