Short answer: a larger pupil during a task can be consistent with greater attentional effort, cognitive demand, arousal, uncertainty, or surprise. It does not prove that someone is paying attention, working harder, or carrying a specific mental workload. Researchers therefore interpret the change from a pre-task baseline—the task-evoked pupillary response (TEPR)—alongside lighting controls, behavior, and other signals.
What pupil measurements actually capture
An eye tracker records pupil diameter over time, usually with infrared illumination and a camera. The useful cognitive signal is rarely the raw diameter at one instant. Researchers first define a prestimulus baseline, then calculate how much the pupil changes after a stimulus, instruction, response cue, or other event. That time-locked change is called the task-evoked pupillary response (TEPR).
Baseline correction matters because people start with different pupil sizes and because the same person’s baseline shifts with room illumination, fatigue, medication, emotional state, and other factors. A TEPR can be summarized as an early peak, a sustained change during a difficult period, or the recovery toward baseline. The chosen time window and preprocessing method can materially change the result, so a pupil claim is meaningful only when those choices are reported.

Raw size is not a mental-workload meter
Pupil diameter is governed by the iris muscles through parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic pathways. Cognitive events influence that balance, but so do light, emotional stimulation, physical effort, pain, surprise, and changes in visual contrast. A large pupil in a dark room therefore cannot be compared naively with a smaller pupil in a bright room, and a single millimeter value cannot be translated into a fixed amount of attention or intelligence.

Why demanding tasks often produce larger dilation
Cognitive control and effort
A 2018 review by Pauline van der Wel and Henk van Steenbergen examined pupil responses in three cognitive-control domains: updating information in working memory, switching between rules, and inhibiting a dominant response. Across these tasks, increasing demand typically produced greater dilation. Their interpretation is important: the response may index effort invested to meet a demand rather than difficulty alone.
Someone may recruit more control because a task is complex, because the person is trying to avoid an error, or because success is becoming uncertain. Greater dilation can therefore occur without better performance. A participant who is close to disengaging may also show a large response while accuracy falls. Dilation and success are related only indirectly.
Arousal and the LC–NE system
Pupil-linked changes are associated with arousal and activity in the brain’s locus-coeruleus norepinephrine (LC–NE) system. This neuromodulatory system influences alertness and the “gain” applied to information processing. The safest description is that pupil size is a peripheral correlate of arousal and attentional effort; it is not a direct measurement of norepinephrine and does not read brain activity by itself.
In a multiple-object-tracking study, Dag Alnæs and colleagues combined infrared pupillometry with fMRI. Individual pupil changes covaried with activity in the locus coeruleus, superior colliculus, right thalamus, and cortical dorsal-attention network. That result supports a biological connection between pupil-linked arousal and attention systems, while still leaving the pupil as an indirect signal measured at the eye.

A broader review of eye tracking in cognition places pupil data beside gaze position, blinks, and saccades. Those measures provide different pieces of information; no one eye signal gives a complete account of what a person is thinking.
Does a bigger pupil mean someone is paying more attention?
Not by itself. Larger task-evoked dilation is compatible with increased attention, effort, or working-memory load under controlled conditions, but several competing explanations can produce the same pattern.
| Observed dilation | Interpretations that can fit | What would help distinguish them |
|---|---|---|
| Large response during a high-load memory block | More working-memory updating or control effort | Accuracy, reaction time, and a matched low-load condition |
| Large response after an unexpected event | Surprise, uncertainty, or salience | Manipulated predictability and event ratings |
| Large response while performance deteriorates | Strenuous effort, frustration, or approaching disengagement | Omissions, confidence, self-report, and sustained time course |
| Different average pupil sizes between people | Lighting, age, physiology, medication, or demographic differences | Within-person contrasts under identical visual conditions |
| Brief constriction or dilation tied to a visual change | Pupillary light reflex | Matched luminance, color, contrast, and stimulus size |
Performance is not a one-to-one readout
The effort account explains why a person can dilate more without answering more accurately: they may be investing additional control to compensate for a difficult rule or weak memory trace. Conversely, a practiced participant may perform well with a smaller response because the task requires less effort. A response can also reflect uncertainty about what will happen rather than attention to the task itself.

For that reason, a defensible statement is “the larger response was consistent with greater effort under these controlled conditions.” The statement “the participant was definitely concentrating harder” goes beyond what pupil data establish.

Light is the dominant confound
Ambient illumination sets the baseline
The pupil constricts in brighter surroundings and dilates in darker ones. Differences in room lighting, monitor brightness, reflections, or even a participant’s position relative to a window can shift the baseline before a trial begins. Age and ethnicity are also associated with baseline differences, so raw between-person comparisons can be misleading.
Stimulus luminance drives its own response
A brighter or higher-contrast image can trigger a visually evoked light reflex that is larger than the cognitive effect being tested. If one experimental condition contains brighter text, more white space, a different color, or a larger stimulus, its pupil response may differ even when mental demand is identical. Methods guidance recommends measuring luminance, matching visual conditions across conditions, reporting stimulus size, color, and contrast, and avoiding pupil sizes near physiological ceiling or floor limits.
How a responsible pupillometry experiment works
- Stabilize the visual environment. Keep ambient illumination constant, document it, and prevent uncontrolled sunlight or screen reflections from changing across blocks.
- Match the stimuli. Equate luminance, contrast, color, and visual area whenever the manipulation is meant to change cognition rather than vision.
- Record a baseline. Measure a prestimulus interval long enough to estimate each trial’s starting level, then define in advance how the baseline will be subtracted or divided out.
- Capture time-locked data. Mark stimulus onset, response cues, and other events so early peaks, sustained changes, and recovery can be analyzed separately.
- Handle blinks and signal loss. Detect blink periods, remove contaminated segments, interpolate only where justified, and report the artifact-rejection rule. A blink gap should not be treated as a cognitive response.
- Specify preprocessing. State the sampling rate, smoothing or filtering, interpolation limits, baseline method, and analysis window. There is no single universally accepted cognitive-pupillometry pipeline.
- Collect behavior. Accuracy, reaction time, omissions, and premature responses reveal whether a larger response accompanied successful control, compensation, or disengagement.
- Model the comparison. Prefer within-person contrasts between matched conditions. Use a statistical model that reflects repeated trials and participants, and report uncertainty rather than presenting one pupil trace as proof.
How to read a pupil result
Demand manipulations
Useful comparisons vary the number of items, rule complexity, switching requirement, inhibition demand, or memory load while holding visual input steady. If dilation increases as the manipulation becomes more demanding, the pattern supports an effort or load interpretation, especially when behavior changes in the predicted direction.

An early, stimulus-locked peak may reflect orienting or surprise. A sustained elevation through a memory or decision interval is more compatible with ongoing effort, but it can still include arousal or uncertainty. Recovery after the response can show when the elevated state ends. Reporting only a maximum value hides these distinctions.

Converging measures
Pupil data become more informative when combined with gaze stability, blink rate, saccades, self-reported effort, accuracy, and reaction time. If all measures point in the same direction, confidence in the interpretation improves. If they conflict—for example, large dilation with frequent omissions—the result should be described as high arousal or effort with poor task engagement rather than as successful attention.
Individual differences and what remains stable
People differ in baseline pupil diameter and in the size of their response to the same load. Lighting, age, ethnicity, autonomic state, medication, and visual factors can contribute. Within-person changes under matched conditions are therefore generally more interpretable than ranking people by raw pupil size.
Alnæs and colleagues reported that individual differences in responses to cognitive load could remain stable across a lag of several years in follow-up pupillometry. This suggests that pupil response characteristics can have trait-like consistency, but stability does not make the measure a direct test of intelligence, motivation, or a person’s everyday workload. A stable correlate can still be influenced by context and measurement quality.

Pupil dilation does not diagnose mental workload, prove attention, measure intelligence, or reveal a person’s thoughts. It cannot determine from a single recording whether someone is motivated, truthful, interested, or learning. Emotional stimulation, physical or motor effort, uncertainty, novelty, and surprise can all enlarge the response.

A 2021 meta-analysis of the Index of Cognitive Activity reported contradictory workload findings and detected influences from light. That result is a warning against treating any eye-tracker index as universally reliable. Practical usefulness depends on the task, the implementation, visual controls, preprocessing, and the decision the measurement is meant to inform.
Using pupil data outside the laboratory
In a carefully controlled usability or human-factors study, pupil responses can help identify which interface step imposes more effort, whether a training sequence increases load, or when a decision becomes uncertain. The comparison should be made within the same person, with the display held constant and behavioral outcomes recorded.
Everyday environments are harder: lighting changes as a person moves, screens vary in brightness, and natural tasks mix cognitive, emotional, and physical events. A consumer eye tracker may still provide useful exploratory signals, but a changing pupil trace should be treated as an alert for further investigation, not an automatic label such as “focused” or “overloaded.”

- Was the result calculated relative to a prestimulus baseline?
- Were ambient and screen luminance measured and matched?
- Could a light reflex, surprise, emotion, or motor action explain the change?
- Were blinks and other artifacts removed with a stated rule?
- Were accuracy, reaction time, omissions, or self-reported effort collected?
- Is the comparison within a participant rather than a raw ranking between people?
- Does the wording say “consistent with effort or arousal” instead of claiming proof of attention or workload?
When those checks are satisfied, pupil dilation is a useful indirect index of attentional effort and arousal. It is most informative as one measured component of a controlled experiment, not as a standalone window into the mind.
